Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card 40,000 Bonus Points - $99 Annual Fee First Year

630

The annual fee isn't too attractive, but it's not bad to use as a main card (where Amex is not accepted/attracts exorbitant fees) with 1 point per $1 spend (for the first $2500 per statement period), which is probably one of the highest earn rates on Mastercard/Visa. You can also get 10% off your shopping at Woolies once a month (more details/restrictions below, not for TAS), so you can recover some/all of the annual fee if you do your shopping there regularly (or do one big trip there each month).

Also, I think you need to make sure to apply through this link:
https://cards.woolworths.com.au/credit-cards/qantas-platinum…
Navigating their site normally only shows up as 10,000 bonus points.

A quick Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V of main points from their site because I want to go to sleep:

Points:

BONUS 40,000 QANTAS POINTS when you apply by 31 January 2017 and make an eligible purchase by 28 February 2017.
Earn 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent on eligible purchases for the first $2,500 spent per statement period and earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent for the rest of that statement period – including your everyday shopping, travel, entertainment and bill payments – and everywhere Visa is accepted.

Balance Transfer:

0% P.A BALANCE TRANSFERS FOR 14 MONTHS from card approval. Apply by 31 January 2017 (reverts to the variable cash advance rate)

Fees:

Annual Primary Cardholder Fee First Year $99
Annual Primary Cardholder Fee Subsequent Years $169

Extras:

We’ll give you 10% off your first weekend shop in-store at Woolies each month when you scan the barcode on the back of your credit card and pay with your Woolworths Credit Card. (Excludes Tasmanian stores).

  • Would this be a good first and only credit card to have to accumulate points for travel purposes?

    • +12

What's your monthly card spend ?

If you spend $2000 per month on the card, then you'll be getting 24000 points per year. https://www.finder.com.au/frequent-flyer-analysis-how-much-i… thinks the points are worth about $0.0075 each - so your yearly points will be worth somewhere around $180.
Take off the $169 annual card fee, and you're left with approximately nothing.

If you spend less than $2000 a month you'll be losing money.

If you spend more than $2500 a month, then you only earn $0.0037 on the spend above this figure.

      • Monthly spend is less than $2000 for sure! Thanks!

    • +3

I probably wouldn't use it as an ongoing card - just for the first year for the lower fee and sign on bonus, unless you can somehow convince them to waive the fees. :)

  • +1

1:1 is quite a good earning rate, but only 2500 per month. The 40K sign on will help to save up for a QF flight. But be aware though that there are no 'free' flights, the add on costs at QF are ridiculously high.

OP, this is a good find. I'm on the iPad and cannot see the $99 pa bit. Anyone see it?

  • Ok got the fees under the fees tab. ;)

  • +3

No minimum spend? That's not too bad

  • +3

Why is there reference to a 5% discount once per month in the T and C, but 10% in the top section?

    Is it 5% or 10% ?

    • or 15% for the first WW weekend spend?

    • I'm not sure. It looks like the T&Cs were lazily copied from an older promotion perhaps. If you go to their main credit card page: https://cards.woolworths.com.au/credit-cards.html
It has the 10% in there rather than the 5% bonus. Regardless, that 10% off feature is spruiked all around the Woolies site so I would think it's a 10% discount.

    • +1

Yeah, I noticed that too. Looks good at first glance, but then you get 5% off with Wish Gift cards and if you buy them using Amex you get more QF points.

Isn't the westpac offer better 50000 qff points no annual fees

    • +1

Yes, but then most ozbargainers will have been there and done that. This is an offer to consider for those who have already plucked the low hanging fruit.

    • of the 3 altitude cards, which would you recommend (I cant see income tiers on the website)

      • I am going into westpac today

      • This information is on the details page on each of the westpac cards
Black - Recommended income to apply: $75,000
        Platinum/Blue - Recommended income to apply: $30,000

    • Which card has no annual fees?

    • Must've missed that one, whats the point earning like?

      1 to 1 or 0.5 to 1?

    • If you're just after the points, bear in mind that the Westpac card has a minimum spend ($2.5k). Woolworths card only requires "an eligible purchase".

  • Which CC can we now withdraw positive balance for free/ at small cost? I know 28degrees used to be a good card for that but the rule changed. I am considering to utilise the 14mth 0% BT however don't have any credit card from the Big4.

    • I believe the Citibank debit & one of the Bankwest ones.

      • Balance transfer to a debit card? I reckon it will be bounced back?

  • 5% discount is just match using gift card. Woolies used to offer 10% off for online order when you use Woolies credit card, it's not worth apply now after they removed that.

Bought my son a QFF fight NY Melbourne return around this time last year. Tax was US$800 @ 0.66 = Aus$1200. Plus the points. I've swapped over to collecting velocity points as they charge very little tax in comparison.

    • I've heard Velocity rewards bookings include fuel surcharges, and Qantas charges these separately. If that's true then it would be fair to claim that Velocity points are 'worth' more.

    • Yeah - and after some of the ~1k deals you cringe. (not with Qantas - but still)

Check some of their partners - I think Emirates? was cheaper taxes, but could have changed.

    • "Bought my son a QFF fight NY Melbourne return around this time last year. Tax was US$800 @ 0.66 = Aus$1200. Plus the points."

So were your points completely worthless ?

You can already fly return from New York to Melbourne for $1200 if you're flexible with dates and airlines - no points required.

Do you happen to know the cost of that flight if you'd just paid for it outright ?

    • Been a while since I've taken a Qantas flight on points, can you still use points to pay for the taxes as well? $1200 in taxes is bloody steep considering I'd expect that flight to cost around about that much (incl taxes) if it was paid for outright and wasn't booked the day before.

    • +1

After swapping over to Velocity points we have discovered there are very few (ie none) flights available. Back to Qantas points.

  • Isnt the coles rewards card better to use as a daily use card?
2 points per dollar spent, and only $89 annual fee, works out to 1% cashback on all spending.
No airline points tho, just flybuys.

    • can be used on flybuys travel now

  • Can anyone tell if this card has complimentary insurance? I couldn't find any info on it (same for my coles mastercard). Looks like this card may be inferior to a bank/amex issued one if you're booking flights/travel stuff.

    • It has some insurances - scroll to the bottom of the page (on mobile), and it links to a pdf. Mentions travel but not sure what else as I didn't bother reading it…

  • What about this

"^$100 Woolworths eGift Card offer is available to new primary cardholders only who apply for a Woolworths Everyday Platinum Credit Card between 12:01am AEDT 30 September 2016 and 11:59pm AEDT 31 January 2017, are approved and make an eligible purchase on their Woolworths Everyday Platinum Credit Card by 11:59pm AEDT 28 February 2017. Hey mate, I can't find this section on the T&C. Does it mean that you would get 40k QFF points, 14 months balance transfer and $ 100 eGift Card on top of these to offset the ridiculous annual fee of $ 100???

      • I suspect they forgot to give the ^ disclaimer the disclaimer 6 treatment.

  • 40000 points and 14 months balance transfer is good
This is a great offer, thanks OP

    • +1

Is it not the case though that once you put a balance transfer on the card, the interest free period on your purchases reverts to 0 days? this is the case on most credit cards i thought. The golden rule for balance transfer cards is usually to never use that card for spending.

      • Yep, that's what I plan on doing with the no minimum spend for the 40K points. Buy a can of soft drink or something to receive it lol

        • +2

Poor ozbargaining….you will rot your teeth and spend more at the dentist. You should buy a clearance MFI lightning cable as advertised on here. Now if they only stocked eneloops….. ;-)

  • Are you still eligible if you cancelled a Woolworths Credit Card in the last 12 months?

  • Expand more detail:

^$50 Woolworths eGift Card offer is available to new primary cardholders …..

After the first year, the annual Primary Card holder fee will be $49 and a $9 annual fee for each Additional Card. The $0 annual fee offer expires 31 January 2017.

    Misleading?

    • oh, they are for "Woolworths Money Everyday Platinum Credit Card" instead of "Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card".
Strange wws is lazy to modify the detail on this page.

  • Just received and activated this card, and HOLY CRAP! their website is poor. Absolutely dreadful UX

    • How long did it take from application to card arrival? I just applied today and got an email that they will be in contact with me within 10 business days. I'm going overseas soon.

      • I received the card about 5 business days later

  • Did anybody who applied for (and received) one of these cards receive um… A little 'extra' surprise in their QFF points?

  • Hmm.. just noticed it said "eligible purchase" and not min of $3000… anyone know what they mean by "eligible purchase"

    • basically anything you buy at any retail outlet will count as an eligible purhcase.

  • Applied and approved… Thanks OP for posting this.

  • When they say 'selected weekend' of each month, are they referring to a weekend that they select or is it simply the first weekend in the month that you shop on?
Ie. Are they going to dictate that I must go shopping on a particular weekend to get that benefit or is it any weekend once each month?
