  • Thanks for sharing. Good find w/ no annual fee

  • Looks good.

Question: what does '1.00% p.a. for up to 12 months on purchases from card approval' mean?

I would think it means you pay only 1% in interest for a purchase eg. 'at the supermarket' that is not paid off before the next closing balance, for the remainder of the time period till the anniversary of the card start date. can somebody clarify.

    thanks

    • +1

Correct the interest rate on purchases is 1% til 12 months after approval (if you don't pay off full balance) and you'll no longer get interest free period if not paying off in full each month.

      • +2

Wow, so if you always pay off your credit card every month it would make sense to get a huge credit limit if you could, say 40k and every month instead pay the minimum payment and put the remaining money in your mortgage, after 12 months pay off the balance of the credit card. Therefore would would save typically 3.5% on what you spend (4.5% mortgage - 1% pa credit card). Sounds a win.

This would be $1400 dollars saved if spend 40k in one year. Any thoughts??

        • +1

Make sure your mortgage allows you to redraw your 'remaining money' payments back, so you can pay off your card in 12 months time. Else you'll be exactly where they want you.

        • +2

To make it easier, you could just try getting a 40K balance transfer, which is entirely interest free for 18 months.
This could save you $1700 in interest in 12 months and $2400 in 18 months (but keep in mind that you'll pay $99 annual fee after 12 months).

        • @MrTweek: The problem with BTs is although what you've said is true, if you want to be able to use the card to earn points, for travel insurance etc. then you'll immediately be paying interest on it.

This means you won't be able to use your card to earn points or for insurance.

        • @illumination:
          Yes, that's true.

You can minimize the interest by transferring the amount you pay to the credit card straight away. It's a bit of a hassle if you use it for everyday purchases, but if you just use it for larger purchases or for insurance it may be practical.
Also, if you made it this deep into Ozbargain, you surely don't mind spending an hour a day fixing up your statements to save another dollar :D

The best way to "safely" do this is having one credit card for purchases and one (or more) purely for balance transfers.
The BT ones won't get you any points, but after all, you'd probably safe more money from these than points can ever get you. Almost every bank has some kind of balance transfer offer available, if you are happy to use a card without rewards for this.

Any idea on the minimum salary requirement?

    • Minimum income for the Platinum card is $35k and for the Signature card is $75k

  • +2

Their Signature cards is one of the highest earning non Amex cards (other than Citi Select) for Krisflyer miles at 0.75 per $ locally and 1.5 per $ for overseas spend, and if you keep the card for a year (whenever your birthday is) then it turns into .825 per $ for local spend and 1.65 per $ for overseas spend every year you keep the card.

  • +3

Existing St.George customers who currently hold an Amplify Platinum or Amplify Signature card or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer. Eligible purchases do not include fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, BPAY transactions, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account. The bonus Amplify Points or Qantas Points will be credited to your points balance within 12 weeks of the eligible spend criteria being met.

  • found it.

first time i got the application unsuccessful straight away.

  • I was waiting for this to come around but just applied and got approved for the Amex Explorer promo. Might have to try, haven't been knocked back for a few years now. Never banked with St George - anyone know how stringent they are?

  • Yeah same, have quite a few cards including the 28 Degrees, Amex Platinum Edge and Amex Explorer. Probably a bit risky to apply for another card so soon after being approved for the Amex Explorer. Would be interesting to see other peoples experiences on getting approved or not.

I don't think they worry too much about how many cards you have so long as you can meet the payments. When the last round of card deals were on I applied for platinum Virgin Velocity and platinum Qantas Rewards at the same time with the same bank and got them both approved over the phone in about 20 minutes. The only account that I had with that bank was a savings account with 153 dollars in it. And I've got way too many other cards. Must remember to close a few.

      • It is determind by a few factors but mainly around servicing. That is, ensuring your income can safely meet your expenses. Having large limits ( even if you don't have any money owing) can be quite detrimental as they have to calculate 3% of the balance as the amount you will pay off the card every month even if it's always $0.

In regards to the credit searches it certainly isn't great to have a 'busy file' I would consider busy probably 5/6 enquirers in a year.

It also spooks companies when you have a number of credit card enquirers but no card because that means you got declined. So in your case I don't think it should be a problem.

    • I applied for 8 cards over the last 18 months. Holding up to 4 at the same time. No problems at all.
Credit rating went down by 3 points (out of 1000) over the whole time.
      I wouldn't be too worried.

  • Does anyone know if they good when it comes to traveling overseas and using their Visa card. For example CBA is very bad as they have this overseas transaction commission/conversion fee and trust me, its hefty. On the other side, ANZ is not bad but then they kinda kill you with exchange rate.

    • +2

Suspect it's terrible like all the rest. Stick with 28degrees for overseas.

      • +9

Or Bankwest Zero Platinum which has travel insurance and doesn't have a fee for paying off your balance with BPAY like 28 Degrees.

        • I just keep getting caught by that!

        • Actually the Bankwest Mastercard qantas platinum looks good. 50K qff points and only $160 annual fee..

    • The Anz traveller reward card doesnt charge fees on oversea transaction and oversea ATM cash withdraw. It also gives you free virgin domestic flight and two virgin lounge per year. It can also uses amex lounge at Sydney airport.

  • Want to apply but don't like this bank, so give it a miss this time.

  • Can't decide beetween this and the Amex Explorer!

  • I should know this by now, but how long does it take to get your points and can you cancel the card after a few months once you get your points?

    • Said 12 weeks post eligible spend in there somewhere. My plan exactly! Mind you no great rush given it's free for a while year :) gotta make sure my Qantas lounge passes arrive too haha.

  • Gotta pay rego and insurance so the spend requirement shouldn't be too hard, ANZ Black limit might make them decline me though…don't know if I'm willing to try

  • +4

I saw on a previous comment from jackofspade on the Amex Explorer post that said that you can still get the ANZ Black with the 75K QFF points and the annual fee waived for the first year if you're an existing ANZ customer with internet banking. It seems to show this on this link on the ANZ website: https://www.anz.com.au/personal/credit-cards/offers/ibfreque…

As with the Altitude black from Westpac, I can't see any reason not to just open up a free online bank account and then sign up for the ANZ black with the first year annual fee waived.

Has anyone tried this on? It seems to be a far better deal than this if it works. I can't tell if this has been missed by the OZB community because it's actually crap and I'm missing something, or if everyone else on here isn't eligible because they have already received their 75K points from ANZ already…

    • I'm a bit confused by your second paragraph. If you meant sign up for a Westpac - not ANZ - Black, yes you can do that. You can sign up to a Westpac Reward Saver online and then sign up to to the Altitude.

      • Sorry what I meant is you could get the Westpac Altitude card with 50k QFF points and the annual fee waived for the first year if you weren't an existing customer and signed up to one of their free online accounts. It looks like you can do the same (the ANZ progress saver is a free account) with the ANZ black based on that link

        • +2

This is what I did for the Altitude card about a month ago. I signed up for the Reward Saver online and then immediately signed up for the Altitude card.

    • +1

damn, now i've applied for both! haha

    • +3

ANZ and Westpac does have better offers but most ozbargainers churning credit cards for points already took up the offers in the last 12 months. I saw the ANZ internet banking offer at http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/current-…

      • Yeah exactly I'm still waiting for it to have been more than 12 months since I cancelled my last ANZ card.

  • Great find. What are some options of spend to get the Qantas club pass (besides actual flights) ? I know other posts have talked about buying a top up of points but it seems like a hit & miss process.

  • +1

Where does it say in the T&c's that you must spend on qantas to get the qantas lounge passes ?

    • sorry I just assumed it was standard Qantas Club T&C's as that's the criteria to obtain Qantas club passes with Westpac Black.
Couldn't find anything as specific here:

  • Has anyone prepaid their utility bills in advanced (say 500 bucks) in order to reach the spending threshold?

    • Wouldn't that be a B-payment which is on the excluded list of eligible purchases?

      • +1

If you pay the utility bills by BPay, they would be considered BPay payments :-)

        • Even if you pay your bill on the utilitys website?

        • +1

          @MaccDogg:

use paypal for utilities payments - add card to paypal you get the points that way

    • +1

Yes I've done this. Also works with insurances (eg health insurance, car insurance), phone bills, car toll account etc.

    • +1

Yes you can do this. You can prepay anything you want.

I havent used Bpay in years and always pay accounts via the retailer/ service provider portal/ their own website or use postbillpay earning points on every single bill.

      • New to points collecting, thanks for this

    • +2

I guess the easiest way to prepay stuff (for me at least) would be prepaying grocery shopping and petrol, i.e. getting Wish gift cards.
You can even get some 5% off and $500 are spent quickly for most people, I guess.

    • +2

Use postbill Bay. I rang the bank and they confirmed it is an eligible spend and will earn points. If not offered, Paypal with a linked card is another way.

  • +1

I'm seeing mixed reports on whether the Signature card earns points on ATO Payments. The T&Cs suggest not, however reports on real world use indicate otherwise. Anyone had experience with this?

    • Interested in this point as well given tax time is coming in due

      • Does an ATO payment count towards the $2500 spend to get the points?

  • +1

whats the best credit card to take out?? I am getting confused.

    • +1

That westpac option of opening a savings account to get the 50k/75k points card fee waived sounds better if you haven't already done this.

      • Westpac 75k points?

  • damn, just got a BoM card, missed out on the 30K points :(

  • +3

Not sure if anyone mentioned above, but the following are the minimum credit limits.

    Platinum: $6000
    Signature: $15000

  • That minimum spend for the 30k points is a killer though. You're better off spending a few hundred on Epicure to get the same amount instead (Plus you get some good wines.)

    • +1

I see several ½ dozen bottles offers on epiQure with 5k of bonus points for $192. So that's a $1,152 spend to achieve the same 30k points. Unless I'm missing something?
Interesting though, as it's less than half the spend for this card. But I'm not sure I can substitute my monthly groceries for wine. Or can I?? 🍷

      • That is the usual rate. When there's a sale, or Xmas, it goes higher. I've bought 6 bottles of wine for $140 and got 20k points on their xmas sales. 10k on other sales, etc.

  • Can these points be transferred to (for example) Velocity?

    • +1

They can at a rate of 2 reward points to 1 velocity point.

      • +1

        Dang - that's a pretty wasteful conversion :(

        • Yeah I thought the same, but I have zero use for Qantas Points, figure might as well convert to VA and take the 15k free points anyway.

    • Try the classifieds

  • So…Can you sign on to this /the westpac card to get the 50000 Qantas points, and then after reaching the eligible spend/ getting the points, switch over to the other reward system. As technically wouldn't the Qantas points be worth more (based on point earnings per dollar), but the other is more versatile. This way get the best of both?

  • I cant see it written anywhere but I'm guessing this card has 56 days interest free?

  • I received my bonus 30k points.

    • How long did it take after you spent the minimum 2,500?

      • minimum spend on 1st statement.
        received points on subsequent statement.

      • I applied in Nov and managed to do the minimum spent the same month, got the bonus points in jan

      • Thanks for your response. It's just my partner and I still haven't got our points after our min spent last Nov. Keeping my fingers it will go through to the next statement we're about to receive this week
