  • It says $49 when I click the link.

  • +5

OOOOOOHHHHHH my GOD!!! thats just dropped!… it was deff $99!

      • +10

        What the??

  • +7

probably dropped in price now the contactless Square reader is available for $59 (with 1.9% fee … paypal 1.95% fee)

    • +8

This is sweet. I had no idea it finally came to Australia. I've been using the smaller one that plugs in to the phone and it's fantastic. Of all the readers, I felt that Square has got them all beat for the small business/sole-owner trade.

      • +1

So you'll go over to (this) the PayPal system?
Curious as I've been considering Square myself… feel free to elaborate! :o)

        • +3

No. There's no benefit to switching over for me. When I first used the PayPal system, PayPal's fee's were bigger and I had to wait 30 days for the money to clear, though I see the fee's have dropped and I've since heard that the 30 day wait has been eliminated. With Square, it's the cheapest and I usually get my money within 2 days. Their mobile software is sleek, wonderfully designed and a joy to use.

      • +3

agree. the fact that Square is available for $59/1.9% makes this deal somewhat less of a bargain than the title suggests.
bringing the price in line with the competitor (for what is essentially an identical product) doesn't really make the paypal item a 'bargain'.

      • +8

Before you get into this, there is an excellent review by a businessowner that said Square wins fair and square vs paypal.

When I got the link, I will update this post.

Basically what killed Paypal is that requirement to be approved by Paypal AND after reaching certain $$$ in sales, they withheld money for security reason.

        • Square requires approval also after a while and doesn't transfer money to account until approved

        • +2

Yes, that approval process with PayPal…. my god that took me over a month to sort out. They kept wanting more and more information. Square has a similar process but I had that all sorted within a few days. I am very happy with Square and wont be changing back. Perhaps my OP wasn't clear in that

        • +4

This is the link as promised.

It changed my view on Paypal (negatively)

          http://eftm.com.au/2016/09/paypal-here-square-compared-small…

        • +1

Square also doesn't charge chargeback fees AFAIK.

        • +2

@Cyphar: new to square here, just some question, how about if the payment more than $100? where are you going to key the password?

the down side from this is customer cant see how much you charge, only based on your POS machine, but paypal will show the amount to the clients on the reader.

        • +1

          @andyken:

You enter the PIN on the mobile. Customers can see what you charge because presumably you're showing them your phone/tablet as you are using the device.

        • @Cyphar: i think that is the down side isnt it, some customer (senior/middle age) will reluctant to give your card details into your phone.

the + from paypal here is it will showing you the amount and you can put your password via the reader without showing your tablet/phone to customer

        • +1

          @andyken:

I don't think it's a downside at all. While I deal mostly in SMB support, I do have a residential clientele, the majority of which are 50+ and each one of them has commented on how much they love it. Not a single negative remark. They are very inquisitive in to how it all works and are impressed at how good it is.

        • I'm not surprised PayPal are horrendous to deal with, I only put up with them because I pretty much have to for my online business.

        • @Cyphar: That's been my experience, too. I have not had one customer even hesitate with completing the transaction.

        • @Cyphar: i think its depends what business you are on, i have a small shop and some client very hesitant to put their card in any random machine, i talking about year ago, but now, as so many different machine available in the market, people get used to it.

I am with paypal here from very first time they available in AUS, at that time, things was easy, i got approved using my current paypal account within hour of applying.

with paypal itself, never had a problem except two minor incident when customer got charged twice (it said declined) but on my side (paypal) i only received one payment. it takes nearly a weeks for the customer received their fund back (both customer use combank)

        • +1

          @andyken:

Yes. Those is why I've chosen PayPal over Square.

It's a really strange feeling typing your pin into someone else's phone.

  • Can confirm $99 for WA, same as OP

  • +3

YAY to BE IN WA!!! for once!!

    its Showing as $49 here!

  • +4

    • Do you run a business?

      • +2

        Yes.

        • Nice :)

        • +1

@stuhtb: I was kicking myself for missing out on the older units (white and blue ones). From what I've read these are much better. So pretty happy to get it at this price. Although I'm not counting my chickens just yet. I smell a price error…
PS. I've already been approved for Paypal Here.

        • +1

@bluechan:Oh so do you run a business selling chickens or eggs?

    • +1

Just got the email notifying me that it's ready for collection…

  • strange all the WA stores I set it to, it's showing $49

  • its gone back to $99 .. what the!!

  • What's this used for? Generate frequent flyers points?

    • +11

no but you can just walk upto randoms and tap their wallet and get money. ;)

      • Up to $100 right?

        • +1

yup $100 max, but can you count how many people you can bump tap into each day ;)

      • +10

Comes with a free criminal charge too! Bargain!

        • +2

Finally, something I can put on my resume!

      • -2

        u r joking aren't you? :oS

  • +1

Got one sent for free from PayPal a while ago for having a PayPal business . Customers always prepay before collecting so hardly use it

  • Showing $49 in Perth o'connor :)

  • How many percent does Paypal charge??

    • -3

      2.9%

    • +1

they charge for 100% of them

    • +3

      https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/accept-mobile-payments

      1.95% for card reader payments
2.6% + $0.30 for invoices paid by Australian customers

      2.9% + $0.30 for keyed-in card payments
No fee for recording cash payments

      • How does that compare with bank eftpos machines? Seems higher to me

        • Very unfavourably. Card Not Present will be around 1.5% or less, so card present I'd be surprised if it's more than 1.2% through a machine from a bank. The advantage of PayPal/Square though is that 1.9% for American Express is actually not bad (the banks don't sign you up for Amex, you have to do it yourself).

        • Westpac (PayWay) charges me only 30c for Eftpos so that's the biggest difference/savings as most of my customers use debit cards. They charge about 1.75% for credit cards. The app is terrible though! really on the verge of unusable.

Looking at their website now looks like they scratched that service and are offering a similar device with a new app (MPOS1) with 2 plans- for example $25 (included $1000 transactions - 2.5% if utilised fully, 1.5% for each transaction past that - not sure my math is right as that doesn't make any sense) or a pay as you go with a flat 1.5% fee.

  • Dispatched in 10-12 business days

    • Says next day delivery for me

Weird $99 in safari and $49 in chrome

    Bought one for $49

    Thanks OP

    • hope its not a price error!

      • +1

Just got the text message . Order ready for pickup

      • I've seen these before at this price, it didn't really lift off like they hoped for I guess.

    • +3

Safari users historically pay more, it just takes this into an account

  • +5

good for selling items on gumtree, just meet up with item they swipe card and GG

    • if it works :) reviews dont seem to be the best! but it is $49 loll

      • Do you know if reviews involved any degree of comparison to Square?
(I'm considering either at this stage).

        Cheers.

    • +9

i would never swipe my card on a random gumtree person's device. Cash is still king

      • The majority of cards are in unshielded wallets, so it would be easier for them to just scan randoms on the train or busy street.
There is really no reason to run an elaborate Gumtree seller scam just to get card scans.

        • +1

Only if they had only 1 card with nfc, but if they're on the train they most likely to have a mykii so that wouldn't work.

  • +4

Probably a good deal relative to usual cost, however Square is much better if anyone is looking for a merchant terminal. I have found paypal to have unbelievably terrible customer service in the past.

    • +3

Thinking about moving from Westpac to a Square/Paypal Solution. Would you mind expanding on why Square has been so much better? Would be much appreciated :)

      • +2

Sure! I can't provide you with a blow-for-blow comparison but can tell you about my experience. Disclaimer: not financial advice :D

        Square
        - easy account setup
        - overnight dispensation of funds from holding account (SLA is 1-2 days apparently)
        - basic analytics of repeat customers, sales volumes/times etc
        - flat rate fee, no per transaction cost
        - things just work
        - Low value transactions are good with set % fees.

        Paypal
        - Hours setting up account, problems confirming who I am for some reason
        - Shit customer service and confusing system which ate days of my time getting setup
        - "tested" account by taking a few cents out then refused to give it back (dodgy!!!!)
        - Set fee + % cost means low value transactions become substantially more expensive
        - This was last year

Generally speaking I have a very poor opinion of Paypal for the above and other reasons.

I think Westpac are negotiable on the rates, so maybe talk to them about it too.

Appreciate your insight Meowbert! (love the name, named after Hamish Blake's cat? haha)

Have you had much experience with Square's loyalty system?

        • @timdee: No idea sorry.

        • +1

Yeah I hate PayPal with a vengeance, they are just a necessary evil for doing business online unfortunately.

    • +3

Hi, would you mind explaining a bit further why Square is better? Is square a reliable merchant terminal? I honestly haven't heard of this company before until I saw a couple of people mentioning it in this post .

      • +2

Not a shady company. Started by the founder of Twitter.

Never used them myself but I hear many people raving about them. Also have an awesome team of engineers.

      • +2

Dunno but I've used the terminal for 3 months and never had any problems. Accounts are in Australia so you've got the usual regulatory rigour.

  • +2

And boom !! "Order ready fo collection " SMS just received

    • +1

      Wow in 12-13 min? That's great! :D

    • +1

  • Any with one able to advise if you have to have your phone there to process the payment?

Also any developers know if there's an API for this. Have been working on PayPal for a while but not sure how easily I could hook my own thing into this device.

    • What sort of device were you thinking of hooking into the PayPal unit?
