It needs your phone and the app to be active for it to work. They also use your phones GPS.

  • Damn, picked one up a few weeks ago at full price! Bugger!

    • from officeworks?

      • Yep, from OW

        • +11

I have the old one still sitting in box not used thought it may come in handy, this one is newer model but will I use it?
Does anyone own one already as reviews are not good on there site.

    • +2

Just buy it and move the other box to make room for it.

  • +1

can you accept eftpos (like the ones with savings account only and a magnetic strip no chip/paywave) payments on this or is it just visa/mastercard/amex?

    • +1

      says visa, mc and debit

    • i used this for a while, mine never work with debit card without a chip, never work on swipe, only work with paypass and insert card (must be with chip)

    • Credit and debit cards only. To accept eftpos, you need a device connected to that network which PayPal is not.

      • Thank you for confirming this.

  • Is this a good buy not even used last one I got older model.
May find a use for it one day but by then be another newer model out

  • +7

1 - Buy the PayPal Here Tap and Go Mobile Card Reader
    2 - Set up a new business
3 - Sell all the Eneloops accumulated over time from OzBargain
    4 - Make profit
    5 - Buy more Eneloops

    • To make more profit, do steps 2 to 5 and save $49.

  • +1

Oh gawd OzB stop making me spend money. Much better than the crummy first gen PayPal reader I use for business.

    • What didn't you like about it? …. poor service issues… slow to process info?

      • +3

Issues with Bluetooth connection, no display so customers struggling a bit when entering PIN and/or asking to confirm the amount.

        • +1

          I appreciate that, thank you.
Seems I'm not the only one looking for those who have used (either system) and know what differences/preferences to look out for.

          Regards.

        • +4

Agreed. The older customers have a go entering the PIN twice, generally, because the customer has to push the keys fairly firmly. I have to explain that the lights on the device light up every time they enter a digit so we have no idea which digit they missed (I look away when they punch in their PIN) and they have to enter the PIN twice.

It's also very frustrating when the connection problem is on PayPal's end and you have to do a manual charge (at the highest transaction % rate) through the app so the customer can get on their way. When I first received the device, PayPal's connection was up and down for nearly a fortnight and most of my transactions during that period went through the app rather than the device. Ouch.

I picked up a Square $19 device the other week and did my first transaction on it yesterday. It's much like the initial PayPal triangle (except square) but the customer enters the PIN code on my phone. I received notification that the funds were being transferred to my bank account 21 hours after the transaction was processed. We'll see how long it takes to show up in my bank account.

@eyeballz2770: Excellent to receive such information, thanks for taking the time to write up and post.

          Many thanks.

@eyeballz2770: Just wanted to update my post with the info that the funds from Square were in my bank account in less than 30 hours after the transaction.

  • thanks

    • Did you get your stocks?

      • +1

i've thought a bout this question for a few days, still not sure what you are referring to?

  • +2

Is the square reader not a better buy/option

    • +1

square contactless is $59 with 1.9% fees (includes bonus square reader)
square reader (chip/stripe, not contactless) is $19, 1.9% fee

      versus paypal $59, 1.95% fee

      • I've been looking into these for about a month now and seems to me people generally favour Square…
Happy to hear thoughts from others though. Perhaps those who have been using for a while….

        • +1

This PayPal device seems better. You have a screen on the device and it kinda look like one of those portable efpos terminals (though in reality, bluetooth is needed).

Square, fee is better, but it has some of the issues the old PayPal here device has (no screen being one). Also, the magnetic strip option requires the use of the older device (which means you need to have two devices if you want to support some of the older prepaid / once off credit cards.

Also, I feel less comfortable entering pin on someone's phone than a device with pin keys and screen. Not sure how other people feel. But, fees.. yeah PayPal charges a lot more.

        • @netsurfer:

So what you saying paypal or square?

        • @bwatt99: From a device point of view, PayPal Here Tap and Go Mobile Card Reader is better. It has NFC, chip reader and magnetic strip card reader with a display and number pad. Square, the transaction fee is lower, but its current solution involves two separate devices and neither one has a display (you need to use the phone display).

        • @netsurfer: Yeah that's my hesitation on square, how do I know they are not recording my pin entry?? Most of my clients would trust me not too I think, but do I want them having even a moment of doubt about my integrity because I wanted to save half a percent on my fees. The real teaser for me is same rate on card not present for square. I like to take a deposit over the phone at booking. Why pay extra fees when they wont even see what my device is over the phone.

  • Just scanned one in store and comes up as $49

  • +1

You got to be kidding; paid full price only 2 months ago.
This model is a lot better than the previous model but still has crap battery life and annoying on/off button.

  • Not sure if to get this like the price but still got last model sitting not used have no business but wife may start up one day which this may come in handy.
Other than that see no other use for it.

  • East Perth has one in stock on the system but couldn't find it.

I picked one up from East Vic Park no problem.

Got the first model…. what a lemon… thing never worked so will not get another paypal device….maybe if paypal offered free upgrade, I would give it another go.

    • Mine, too. It turned out that my unit didn't turn off despite me being religious about trying to turn it off and the battery finally burned out. They replaced it but I have to say I miss the PayPal triangle. All they would have had to do was rebuild a portion of the PayPal Here app to accept a PIN code instead of a signature which is what Square has done. I've only used my Square device once but I already like it more than my PayPal terminal.

Reviews on the office works site are pretty bad / negative.
I have a feeling paypal is soon releasing an updated device and office works cashing their stock.

  • Thanks OP had to open the link a few times for it to show $49 on mobile but it eventually changed from $99.Was changing from $99 to $49 on pc as well.

  • Paid $150 when these first came out - no problems for me.
Clients are pretty impressed by it.

  • +2

People, I have a better one. If you really want to do business and take mobile payments, and you use Android, forget about Paypal and use Stripe + PayNow for Android.

Firstly Stripe fees are awesome, 1.75% plus 30 cents per transaction - if you do over $4k a month give them a call and you can get better rates, the more you push through the better the rates so I believe.

PayNow is developed by some West Australian developers, check it out here: https://paynow-app.com/

They only charge 10 cents per transaction, and best of all if you phone supports NFC then all you have to do is tap the client's credit card to the back of your phone and it will capture the card number and expiry date :D

No need to purchase any external devices. Lowest rates. Ozbargain :D

Edit: Oh and Stripe does AMEX as well.

    • +2

Yeeeeah… I'm not going to be letting a merchant tap my card on their phone to capture the details into an android app. Frack that!

Lowest rates are pretty useless if noone will actually pay you through it because thee's no trust.

      • +1

Ok sure thing, so how many times in the last few years have you put your credit card into a bill wallet at a restaurant? Do you know how easy it is for a minimum wage waiter to skim your card even when you are watching?

And by the way, I go around every day doing jobs and collecting credit card transactions on behalf of another company and I have to use a crappy Bpoint Commonwealth bank mobile website portal, which is tedious work and I have done this 300 times for clients standing in front of me and no one blinked an eye.

    • So do you pay 10 cents plus the stripe fees (1.75% + $.30) then?

    • I've been considering those 3 options (PayPal, Square and Stripe+PayNow) for about a month now as I am so sick of our Westpac PayWay system. You almost got me convinced until I calculated that Stripe and Square break even at the $200 mark - anything below that and you pay less for Square (due to the 30c transaction charge). When you add the 10c PayNow charges, the break even point is even higher at $266.66.

      Lowest rates.

So I guess it really depends on what your average transaction value is - in my case Square is the cheaper option by far.

      • +1

Fair enough…. in my case my smallest transaction would be $440.

Also if you go above $4k of transactions a month you can get lower rates, which will always make Stripe cheaper for volume than Square.

  • Picked one up earlier. No troubles at all.

  • +1

I'm always tempted to get one of these to make splitting social dining bills easy.

But I realise it I used one of these I'd always be the one absorbing another 1.95% of the bill :(

    • The few times bill splitting socially happened in my group, we "Pay Anyone"'d the guy paying the restaurant bill using bank accounts. Some at the table used banking apps, some just accessed their bank accounts via webpage (I used Safari to access the ANZ portal). The funds appeared in the paying guy's account within minutes. Maybe that would work for you?

      • Yeah friends I dine with, we always do that. Though sometimes a bit awkward everyone logging into netbank infront of everyone hoping noone sees my/someone else's a/c balances and finances. Plus pretty occasionally a botched transfer when someone types the details incorrectly over their phone. Awkward then having to choose between chasing up on the mistake or letting it go.

        • @tonester: Thanks! Yeah I knew about paypal.me though didn't think about it. I'd still be the one absorbing some kind paypal surcharge though if I told everyone to pay me back via that, yeah?

        • +2

          @Uncharted: From the FAQ:
If you've set up your PayPal.Me page for friends and family, it's free for you to receive money. If they send you anything but Australian dollars, you may need to pay a currency conversion fee to withdraw the money to your bank account.

If you have a PayPal business account – or you have friends or family selected, but the person paying you back opts for PayPal's Buyer Protection – the payment is considered a "goods or services" payment. That means you'll pay the standard PayPal transaction fee (2.6% + $0.30 for domestic transactions).

        • @eyeballz2770: Awesome. I never knew that. That works great for me. Thanks for telling!

  • I'm a little baffled by the Paypal Here approval system.

They get you to enter your details and then tell me "oops, we should have already sent you something, we'll get right on that" and I don't get anything. I've received no email notifications that I've even requested having my account approved for Paypal Here.

Should I just wait? Should I call them? Am I doing something wrong?

    • Waiting did the trick. It took ~36 hours but then it was approved.

  • OP it is now $49 at the paypal site.

  • Has anyone done the numbers on this so to make money from QFF points or such system? lol

    • +1

Still too expensive. Transaction cost needs to be at or below 1% to make it cost effective.

      • exactly, given people buy points for 1c per point.

the only thing worth it would be those that give cash back for contact-less payment, like the 5% from citipass, but you risk them detecting it.

or the Me bank movie ticket a week for tap and go.

  • +1

Gods these are so crap. Had one never worked, battery lasts 3 days when OFF (not standby). Pair troubles with 3 phones, bank declines after the client has waited 5min for it to pair properly, money held for a week.

Square doesn't even NEED a dongle! Turn phone on and it's ready
1.9% fee, $1000 free processing, paid in 2 days.

  • +1

$49 is the new 'normal' price (check Paypal's website), so no need to rush.

  • Is the square device which everyone is comparing limited to $100 since it has no pin pad for payments greater than $100 ?

Was looking at a device and terminal for my own business. Based on invoices I will not have any customers using "tap and go".

    • You enter pin directly on the app on your phone with square.

  • I still got the paypal cardreader bought the last time when there was deal. Not sure what to do with 2 now?

    • If there's anything you can sell at the markets, you can have someone run your biz at one market while you're at another. :)

  • Never use it , Buy Buy Buy

  • Picked one up to replace my CBA machine that almost never gets used. Took about 2 days to get verified and working.

  • I've searched around and can't seem to find an answer … I take it since it is a tap reader, the maximum transaction amount is low … $99 or so?

    • +1

It's also got a swipe option and and insert option. Did a $300 transaction on it today.

      • Many thanks..

  • +1

PayPal Australia is selling it directly for $49, It is not a bargain anymore just a compettive pricing to reduce total cost of ownership. https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mobilemerchant/activation/…

BTW: I am new, first comment, feel free to neg down :)

    • What does being new have to do with negging? v+/- is nothing personal!

      Anyway, welcome :-)

      • Thanks for welcome, I have seen first posters saying "be nice to me" or "bear with me" so I thought it can be tough for new people who do not know all the rules, so I welcomed the worse scenario of being negged down :)

  • anyone have issues charging the device, and getting the reader to respond to charging?
