        • @JB1: The seasoned Ozbargainer should have either a 28 Degrees or Bankwest Zero Platnium Card for the best currency conversions and no forex fees. If you don't have one, then its time to go get one FREE for the lifetime of the account!

        • @JB1: Are you paying online or at the actual hotel? And you can't change the currency on the website?

        • @lplau:

I have a Bankwest Zero Platnium Card, but prefer to use my Amex card for the points (only if I don't get charged the forex fee), hence why I asked.

        • @ilikeradiohead:

Paying direct at the hotel- package deal in Bali.

        • @JB1: I'm thinking of switching to Bankwest Zero Platinum again (cancelled it awhile ago), 28degree is starting to impose stupid fees for bpay repayments and stuff…

Did you do any comparisons? any major differences between the two cards?

        • @lplau:

CBA Diamond Rewards has great rewards. I get about $500-800 of BP fuel vouchers annually, but my wife spends a lot :(

Only reason I have a CBA Diamond Rewards card is that it comes free with my home loan.

Bankwest Zero Platinum is a good card for international transaction but no rewards.

Opps, did you mean comparison between Bankwest Zero Platinum and 28 Degs? No I didn't, Bankwest Zero Platinum seems to be a great card for international purchases and free, so why not.

        • @lplau:
Got Bankwest Zero Platinum instead of 28degree myself. Good as a no fee card for FC purchases. You don't earn any reward points though.
For the next few months, Coles prepaid Mastercard might be a good alternative (no fee + flybuy points I believe).

        • @JB1: I guess if they're charging you in AUD, rather than IDR converted to AUD, then pay with the Amex (if they take it). I guess you'll be bringing the BWZ with you anyway so use it as a back up?

        • @ilikeradiohead:

They accept Amex, however it's unclear to me if CBA charges a forex fee even if charged in AUD.

Only reason I pay via AMEX rather than Bank West is that the transaction is probably worth $20 in gift vouchers.

It is concerning that you can be charged a forex fee for 'Australian' merchants who use a a foreign payment processor: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/australian_sites_that_char…

I'd probably play it safe and use my Bank West card.

        • @JB1: Yeah that's a fair call. You might get $20 in gift cards but be charges $50 in forex fees from the bank!

      • This is a bit different, you must pay in AUD, either Cash or Card, no option to pay another currency.

FWIW- I have a BankWest Platinum card for paying in foreign currencies.

    • Yes, they charge you an cross broader fee even if you are debited in AUD but the merchant is out side of Australia. One of the reasons I didn't use CBA cards for overseas transactions.

      • Ok thanks, that's the answer I was looking for.

  • Good timing, my ANZ cards from previous deal almost passed 1 year mark.
Time to close it and switch.

  • I have these cards due to home loan. The Amex is alright but the Mastercard is not worth using if you have a Citibank signature card (better rewards).

    • What does the citybank (mastercard i assume?) Offer points wise? Im using the diamond amex combined with flybuys reward mc at the moment. 3 points per $ for the diamond and 2 points per $ on the fly buys, both no annual fee, both 20,000 points for $100 gift card value.

    Velocity FF

2 Comm Bank Awards points (Diamond and Platinum cards) = 1 VFF point

  • I have Diamond Award, but can't use with Apple Pay…. Not happy.

    • From a source inside ANZ…. ANZ has the Apple pay exclusivity in Australia for a few more months.
After that, CBA will be on board.

      • Yes, ANZ is the only bank with Apple Pay at the moment. CBA has this stupid NFC sticker that stick on the back of your phone that only ½ of the time.

    • Same with samsung pay at the moment. I've just being using commbanks tap and pay but would prefer to not have to unlock the phone :D

      • Why not use NFC?

    • Get ANZ :)

  • Do cancelling these cards after the first year affect your credit rating?

    • Everything that hits your credit report affects your credit rating in some way.

Opening and closing multiple credit cards COULD be seen as dodgy but it really comes down to the person assessing you and/or the companies policy.
Such a question is to hard to answer because everyone's perception on "good credit" is different.

Multiple rejections for credit is definitely a bad thing though - you do not want that on your report.

We've reviewed the information you've given us but after careful consideration are unable to offer you a credit card.

These automatic credit checking systems need to improve their algorithms. $17637.51 earning (self employed) last month before taxes w/ no liabilities other than a simple home loan. Yet the two banks I applied for online said no.

    • +2

You should probably check your credit file and credit score to work out what's the issue before making another application.

      • will do, thanks.

    • You should complain to Veda, the company that calculate your credit score.

    • I had a similar decline from ANZ. Their loss.

    • Have you been self-employed for less than 2 years? That seems to be the magic number for credit.

  • Do I need a CC now or at all if I plan on buying a house in 3-5 years?

    • +1

The more relevant question is: Do you want a baby now if you plan on buying a house in 3-5 years?

  • Just a few notes on using credit cards OS. No better solution than the 28 Degrees card and now that other cards have started charging the foreign currency tranaction fee (about 3.5%) on offshore merchants writing transactions in AUD, there are lots of situations where you'll need to use your 28 D on transactions run locally to offshore merchants on the web . :-) . !!

    • How much commission you get when an ozbargainer apply successfully for a 28 degree card ?

  • Id like to sign up for these cards because of the good mobile app. Currently earning 0.75 QFF points per dollar on my Bank of Melbourne Visa Signature. Worth switching?

I normally spend my points on JBHIFI vouchers 8300 QFF points for $50 dollar voucher. Id switch this for another voucher like coles if Commbank dont offer them, but its hard to see what they do offer for there points….. seems hidden…

Also like that you get an additional card on diamond and platinum.

CBA is the bank which suspended overseas transactions just right after "brexit" happened, this is just one example (I made a list and then left them after 3 years) of the service they provide.

    • +1

You can always rely on us to suspend overseas transactions during times you need it most.

      Which bank?

      The Commonwealth Bank.

    • yep, commbank exists for the benefit of their group executives. leaves staff and customers cold.

    • Wait but… what's the rationale behind that?

  • Would I get the no annual fee if I upgraded from platinum? Already have a 30K limit on plats so I think I'd easily qualify. I'd usually go on online chat but I'm phoneposting

    • Ended up getting upgraded for free, stuntin outta control playas

  • 1] Sydney Airport Lounge access [My fav!]

    Got anymore details on this?

  • +3

Hopefully this would help the OZB community to make an informed decision (I have been using CBA Diamond/Platinum card for almost 5 years - got my home with them so our Credit cards are freebies)

    1) Points: Not as good as other banks since they changed their point rewarding system in 2014. Still pretty decent, on AMEX we get 3 points, MasterCard 1.25 point per dollar spent.
    2) Netbank: Excellent platform. The online portal is much better than Westpac, HSBC and Citi. They have add on that allow you to monitor your expenses and code them accordingly. Similar to how invoices required to be coded in a corporate environment. The smartphone app is easy to use even for someone not so computer savvy like myself. I love NFC touch and go. The cardless option is useful too, served me well when I forgot my wallet at home
    3) Travel Insurance: Pretty decent. I unfortunately had to make a claim earlier this year. My son was very sick and had to be hospitalized for almost 4 weeks in Vietnam. They called us every couple of days checking his conditions and offering medical advices. Services were highly professional. All medical expenses were wired directly to the hospital, we only paid a deposit fee of $1k which was fully refunded to us on discharge. I cant tell you how thankful it was as we did not carry a lot of cash with us (not anticipating that much of medical expenses while going on holidays). They also arranged alternative transport for us to fly back to Australia - pretty handy as it was peak time right before the Chinese New Year and all flights were fully booked. Pretty sure they asked for proof that we purchased our tickets on the CBA credit card as we had to fax through our credit card statements as part of the claim. And yes I did registered for the trip in advance through the NetBank portal.

I would recommend the card for anyone seeking cheap travel insurance and ease of use. For points probably not the best.

Most annoying thing is no reward points for bpay payments

    • +1

To earn points, avoid bpay and pay your bills via the merchant's website where possible. E.g., utility bills.

  • have any existing cba card holders with a 15k+ limit called up to get upgraded under this promo for free?

  • Sorry for dumb question cause im new to this whole thin, what are the points for and whats the benefits of getting these gold, diamond, etc cards compared to the normal one?

    • +1

More reward points for the same spend

Usually that will incur a higher annual fee but not here.

      • What can the rewards points be used for say?

        • +1

          Gift cards
          Fights
          Petrol

          Credit at Myer/flight centre

U can also transfer them to QFF or VFF points

  • Should I try apply for a gold rewards card? I currently hold a low fee MC with a measly limit of $4000 on an income of around $18-20k (part time work, still at uni).

I rack up about $1500 every month and I pay it off in full. I don't anticipate spending any more than that a month until I graduate.

    • +1

min limit for gold is $2500, i would call up and ask they migrate your current card over to gold for promo free thus saving you a credit check hit. otherwise apply on phone and reduce current cba card by $2500 and then apply for gold.

      • Thanks!

      • From conditions:

This offer excludes Corporate and Business Liability cards, upgrades and switches from other card types and existing credit cards.
