    Nice price
Was looking at Android boxes today, went with the android 5.1 and S905 chipset: http://www.banggood.com/A95X-NEXBOX-Amlogic-S905-64bit-Andro…

    • that looks decent too given android 5.1 and slightly better chipset - Thanks for the link

    • +2

there is the slightly higher spec'd S905 with Android 5.1 NEXBOX MXQ PRO TV Box for US$26.31 using Discount Coupon – GMXPZ + 100 EB points and mobile site/2% discount

      link to mobile site

      • Thanks - will pull the trigger on one of these tomorrow

      • Thanks, I purchased this one for $37 plus $3 for tracking code. Great deal, I wish I had seen renegade's post below (beelink) prior to buying but I'm hoping this one will do the job as it's primarily for my bedroom, so I can finally unplug the laptop to access my Plex, Netflix etc. Unless anyone willing to advise if I should request to cancel this and get the beelink one as it has bluetooth.

"regenade 2 hours 32 min ago
Also why buy it so expensive, here for just AU $43
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/282018614795
        2GB + 16GB, S905"

        • Don't understand why i got a negative vote @-@ I was genuinely asking for advice yet get a negative vote. This is why I'm too scared to even post a deal.

        • +1

I tried to buy one from China - the delivery time was pretty ridiculous at 2-4 weeks and it never arrived anyway. So I paid only a few $ more and got it delivered in 2 days from someone local

  • anyone used this and can provide their expereince? was considering setting up a HTPC with support for backups etc but this seems to be a lazy way out for atleast the media playback part

    • +1

I used a HTPC for ages. But use the XBOX one / PLEX now and am Very happy
I use a server for all my Movies/tv shows and music.
I guess a box like this should work as Plex has android support

      • Im leaning towards that too at the moment as it seems neater. What sort of server config are you running for your media and backups? I mainly want my server as a central backup repository instead of me having to create manual backups which I am doing at the moment

        • I use a HP micro server with Server 2012 Essentials.
It offers backups of your contents as well as any pc linked to it if need be.
I only backup my DOCS / Photos and Music..
I don't worry about the videos unless they are my own as they are just too much data to be backing up IMO
          \
          \
You could always just run a PC with an external HDD and PLEX to share with your network also before jumping head first into a serer setup.

        • @ode1: Thanks for that info - didnt realise Server 2012 backed up linked PCs by default without need for additional software such as norton ghost etc.

Im currently trying to setup Kodi on my laptop to test out the config before pulling the trigger - Want to see if some of the video channels are actually available.

If it works well Ill purchase the device as I dont have a PC (use my laptop) and want to have a small device always connected.

  • Can this stream plex, and how does this compare to chromcast 2, needing something to stream plex on my dumb TV.

  • Still no SSL installed after a month time. What a shame, thought about buying 4 units.

  • -2

wish they came with 2GB+ ram

    • Got one with 3x the price.

    • Check out mini m8s on aliexpress for ~ 35 usd.

        • +1

I bought my mini m8s from an ebay vendor and according to Aus Post tracking it should arrive Tuesday, cost me about $45 AUD delivered (Edit: it was ordered on 15th June, so quite happy with two weeks delivery) - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121953797352?_trksid=p2057872.m27…

will be posting comments on it once I have it rooted and reconfigured how I like for my network/AVR integration.

          @gizmomelb:

I preferred to buy from Ebay than AliExpress.

        • +1

@PW: yes, same here.. that's why I bought from ebay.. it was a few AUD dollars cheaper as well.

        • @gizmomelb: Buy this rather

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/282018614795

2GB + 16GB. Beelink is a much bigger manufacturer as well and firmware updates, Open ELEC and OTA is usually supported. I have one. WIth groupon bought 2 for around AU $37.50 each

        • @regenade:

Can you please test to see if it plays 4K@60fps smoothly?

        • @regenade: yes I Was an early adopter of the Beelink S82, was not impressed with their support of the device.. less than a year and it was left dead in the water with no support at all.

EDIT: yes appears the same as the unit I bought, but it has 16GB storage and a gigabit ethernet (not essential for media playback devices).

        • @gizmomelb: ok well the media player arrived today, but I haven't had the time to do anything with it other than open the box and admire how small it actually is

  • The amazon.co.uk reviews are clearly fake or those reviewers who give generic positive reviews for free stuff, but seem to have barely used it.

Many of the comments are inaccurate.

    • So like most Amazon reviews then.

      • Many products have a decent number of useful reviews. The US Amazon site has genuine reviews of this.

    • 5 star reviews are there to increase average score. I don't bother reading them.

    • I hate so many "reviews" that have zero detail or, worse still, are basically summarised versions of marketing material.

  • +1

Would something like this work for foxtel go

    • No, it's only available on limited android devices and HDMI Out is not even available on supported devices.

      • +1

I recall reading this a year back, but just checked their website and they said Foxtel Go is supported on all Android devices as long as you have Jellybean 4.1 and above.

  • Sorry for the dumb question here but does this turn my TV into a smart TV? I've got an old Sony LCD.

    • yes, it'll make your TV to smart TV, it's android running TV box, you can download application, KODI video streaming application is my favorite, cheers

Mid-market rate - when buying with 28degrees card etc in us$

      • -1

That's the PayPal rate which has buyer protection, crazy to buy with CC

        • +1

No, use PayPal with the protection, paid by 28degrees card or similar - best of both worlds as most here should know. Discussed many times over years.

Crazy? Smart to pay with free zero foreign exchange fee credit cards through PayPal ;-)
Why pay PayPal $1 more to do currency conversion - its built into PayPal rate?

        • +1

@Infidel: lol, this^ and I can't believe that's his comment after 6 years of OzBing. Someone really needs to hand their badget back.

        • -3

@MadMaxBargainRoad: Sad that you looked up my history, get a life dude

        • -2

@Infidel: Well I have a zero fee Citibank card connected to my PayPal account and the above is what I was charged

        • @marchi:

Sad that you looked up my history, get a life dude

Sad for simply clicking on your profile marchi & reading Member Since 2010? No issue making 1 click & reading easily available public info.

That's what I often do when someone seems not to understand how things work, assuming they are new here. Then offer advice where & if needed. Wouldn't want people to pay too much -)

But I knew you are an old hand here, so thought you misunderstood me. I'd be surprised anyone still didn't know that money saving tip.

        • @Infidel: I don't feel too surprised now after reading his comments. Dude clearly has absolutely no idea. 'Zero Fee' card lol.

        • @hamza23:
💡💡💡 Another OzBargain public service announcement to save us $$$ when buying from overseas. 💡💡💡

  • Android 4.4 Lollipop OS

Such ignorant product descriptions don't fill me with confidence.

  • +2

Quick question. Looking for something that will play kodi hevc files, preferable 1080p, whilst also handling streams like Exodus and SALTS. Needs to have Netflix (1080 I possible) and ideally Stan and the Australian catch-up apps (I know this is the main issue with most). Any suggestions?

    • A Windows device.

    • Nvidia Shield if you need it right away or wait for the Xiaomi Mi Box which is presumably cheaper.

      • Stan doesn't have a Android TV app.

I don't think many of the catch up TV apps do either (I don't give two shits about Australian content)?

Guess the APKs couldn't be sideloaded with varying results.

      • Won't these enforce cinavia?

        • I think only blu-ray players do that, including PS3.

        • These boxes all run vanilla Android TV OS so it's only up to the app that you use to record.

    • 1080 Netflix is only supported on Netflix approved devices eg. N Shield. If you spend a bit more to get a Windows box you can get it. I have the Wintel Pro Windows 10 box which streams great, poor wifi though like most of these. It has been on OZB before.

    • Catch up apps can be installed as an addon to Kodi/videos easily

  • Noob question apologies! I have movies bought on iTunes stored on a Seagate GoFlex. Would this connect and play those movies fine as well as play Google Play movies?

    • +3

Not unless you strip the DRM from the Apple purchases. This is why buying digital copies of videos is a very bad idea. You're locking yourself into an (expensive) ecosystem with zero benefits as a consumer.

      • Ah OK thanks. Is there a box like the NEXBOX that can do iTunes and Google Play movies or do I just have to get a dedicated PC?

        • +1

The only things that can play iTunes videos is Apple products or Windows PC with iTunes installed.

  • +1

I would suggest buying this given if you have a pay min. $50 and get $15 ebay app voucher

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121971026711?_trksid=p2060353.m14…

    $43 after voucher. S905 2GB/16GM Android 5.1

    • -1

pay min. $50 and get $15 ebay app voucher

      What is that ?

Also why buy it so expensive, here for just AU $43

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/282018614795

      2GB + 16GB, S905

      • renegade, your item is plus post whereas the item posted by fchis doesn't (free post)

after adding them both up and applying voucher, they come up the same.

beelink probably the more reputable unit and the remote appears more user friendly

the mini m8s mentioned above for $45 appears similar speced with a different remote http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121953797352?_trksid=p2057872.m27…

freaktab post mentions beelink being flashed on the m8s (maybe slightly modded)

        • Hmm sounds about alright then. What about this $50 and get $15 ebay app voucher, targeted email voucher from ebay ?

        • @regenade:

attempted to purchase using voucher initially did not work, even customer support told me it wouldn't!

tried again and paid $33.18 USD (inc APPY15 code) ~ $45 AUD for http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121971026711

thanks fchis for pointing this out earlier - hope this helps someone else

  • Has anyone tried one of these boxes with a USB TV Tuner so they can record live TV?

    • It will only work if the USB Tuner works on Android phones/tablets (it's just a tablet with no screen attached).

Also, what app would you use? Kodi supports PVR clients, but no Android host (that I know of).

    • I haven't but I imagine it'd be a frustrating experience as the drivers would need to be pre-installed.

That said, there are Android boxes with TV tuners built in like the Wetek Play

  • I doubt any of these cheap media players are as good as my Minix NEO X8-H Plus.

    • +1

Yeah, it won't be but it'll probably be good enough for most.

      Minix make some great stuff

      • Whats so good about the Minix? Price?

        • +1

The X8-H has a far more powerful chipset but it's about 6x the price.

Generally, MINIX devices have far better build quality and support. Whilst most cheaper devices may get 1-2 updates to fix issues (if that), MINIX usually supports their devices for a year or so.

Zidoo devices are in the same boat.

        • Whats so good about the Minix? Price?

Buy this Minix and you won't regret it.

          Youtude review

        • @PW: LOL. $289? I'll certainly regret it.

  • in general, how's the wifi on these cheap Android boxes? can we use usb wifi dongles on these? has anyone tried attaching wireless keyboards like the Logitech k400r's on these

    • I have a similar cheap android box. The WiFi through 2 old plaster walls (10 meters from the router) is good. I've used a cheapo wireless mouse and it's fine.

      • thanks for the assurance, I'll go ahead and order one.

  • Got mine yesterday.
First impression is good, easy setup, logitech wireless keyboard and mouse was plug and play.
Can't seem to get a wired xbox 360 controller working with an emulator, however, which is frustrating.
