$10 Fee Waived - Coles Reloadable Mastercard

1610
TEAMOFFER1

Now Ozbargained - There was no expiry date, however someone at head office probably traced the surge in applications back to this website
Offer is meant to be for employees only however should work for everyone.

  • min $10 transfer required. Be careful topping up card from an existing CC, could be treated as a cash advance! DYOR.

  • Free foreign exchange til the end of the year (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/253027)

  • Earns flybuys points which can be redeemed for giftcards. 1 point for every $2 spent. 2000points = $10 credit at coles. crappy return however better than most debit cards which don't have any rewards. also 1 point for $1 on forex.

  • As pointed out by monty.melb, good for use as a disposable card for free trials (eg. netflix, spotify and uber)

  • Thanks worked for me 👍

  • Awesome find, was waiting for another one of these deals.

  • Ace thanks.

Can I use this to avoid Jetstar fees?

  • What are people using these cards for? What are the benefits over using my normal debit/credit card?

    • +1

Debt card which earns rewards points(although only flybuys points), also no forex til the end of the year.

    • +3

They have a promotion at the moment, where international fees are waived

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/253027

      • This is what I got it for. I was almost ready to pay $10 for it, but was hoping an offer like this would come along.

    • +4

I use this to get 6 months free membership to avoid fee if I forget to cancel my membership.

      • Been thinking that`ll be a good use…

    • Gets me access to the occasionally offered MasterCard benefits since my real cc is a Visa.

    • +2

Coles have free delivery if you pay with a Coles Mastercard, does this work with prepaids?

    • +1

Club catch is a good use for these cards. They're also good for Uber, gocatch and PayPal.

      • I tried Uber with the previous $10 fee waived deal and when I tried to request for a ride, it said there was a problem with the payment details even though it would've been free due to referrals.

Entered another CC (citibank) and then I was able to request.

      • Can anyone confirm success with Uber. I heard different.

        • +1

It definitely let's you create an account and take advantage of (self) referrals. As for being able to request, didn't work with me. See above.

        • @CVonC: Thanks. Your comment beat mine by a minute :)

    • +2

Do a balance check (FOC) using Coles Express ATM, and get the goodies from the coles express ATM voucher from time to time.

    • Money laundering?

  • So what`s the use cases for these?

    • +16

Given I am a credit card user
And I require to use my own money
And I don't want to pay a fee for using my own money
When I need to make a purchase using a credit card
Then I can use this card without having to use a normal bank supplied credit card which may carry an annual charge

        I think
        The Question was
        More related to
        The advantages of this debit
        Card over an ordinary
        Debit card

        Credit card needed
        To buy many things online
        Fee free card is best

      • But you
        can get
        debit cards
        easily

  • is minimum $10 loading needed when apply for?

  • +1

do Jetstar and Tigerair recognise it as a Mastercard debit card?

    • I'd like to know this too, thanks.

    • I just did a "find" on the comments section to see if anyone had asked this yet - would be very useful if you could use this to book flights!

    • Doubt it. Usually MC Debit Cards have 'Debit' above the master card logo, which this one doesn't have.

    • +2

I've not used this card, but last night I used my Qantas Cash card (which is a Prepaid MasterCard) and didn't need to pay a fee to Tiger, so I presume this would be the same but ymmv

Yes, Qantas saved me from paying $8.50 to Tiger.

  • Thanks, will come in handy I guess. I paid with my NAB debit card, payment failed, then a lady called me a minute after saying that it had a "high security wall" or something like that, and wanted to ensure that I knew what I was purchasing, then unblocked it for me. A bit strange but I can understand why they have such a thing.

  • Yay, waiting for this finally paid off. Good find.

  • Would anyone suggest this as a travel card option, ie https://www.commbank.com.au/personal/travel/travel-money-car… ?
    Thanks in advance!

    • +3

Nope, horrible product filled with fees especially if you're visiting multiple countries. Get the citibank plus card or this deal if your traveling this year.

      • In the description above, it says "Free foreign exchange til the end of the year". Which fees do you think may be levied?

      • +1

The question was would you suggest this as a replacement for that CBA travel card thing, so the answer is yes, this is better than the CBA travel card (at least until the fee-free forex deal runs out).

      • +1

Sorry I misread the question. Yes this would be a better alternative to the CBA product.

      • The lady at CBA told me the only fees on this card are ATM withdrawals. All purchases are fee free and charged at the applicable foreign exchange rate on the day. What am I missing please?

        • I used this card on my holiday in Vietnam. Every time I withdraw money from the Atm I got stunk with the Atm fee ( about 2$ and cba charged another fee on top) the worst thing is I cannot withdraw more than 2 millions VND ( ~$130) so I have to do so many withdraw and got stunk with hips of atm fees

        • Their exchange rate isn't the MasterCard spot rate.

        • The exchange rate is crap

        • @bargainfinder:
So have you found out the solution for that hassle yet? I am visiting Vietnam in the end of this year and I am confused. Probably $500 to withdraw at a time is fine. By your way, we pay too much for fees.

        • @mrjames:

Where can I find their exchange rate?

        • +1

@tkd8558: I asked my relative in Australia to send the money for me from Au via Vinatransfer( or Western union transfer). Just work out roughly how much you will spend and have it sent over that way. You only pay one fee.if you only bring 500$ then just bring it with you

        • +1

          @tkd8558:

From 1st July 2016 the maximum you can withdraw from ATMs
will be reduced from $1,000 to $300 per day.

          See my comment here:

        • @bargainfinder:
How about send the money to yourself in the destination country with rough dates. So you will need nobody to help from here.

    • +5

I have cba travel card. Worst decision ever. I transferred over $4000 to a currency for a holiday didn't end up using much of it and went to transfer it back and lost nearly $500 in the week exchange back to AUD they offer. It is a joke avoid avoid avoid

    • +1

bit late but had the worst experience with the CBA travel card. Bf went and got one for our Japan trip (2 weeks long) without telling me, loading $2000 in yen? guy told him if he didnt use it at all that we would get our original money back. we didnt end up using it at all as I have my own credit card and when he gave it back, there was about a $200- 300 loss because of the 'exchange rate' - which i seriously doubt would have fallen that much but he better have learnt from his mistake.

  • +2

do you need to use legit details when registering ?

    • I did, I'm treating it like any credit/debit card application. Maybe that's naive but hoping for the best

    • I am sure it breaches some law somewhere, however I have previously registered a similar type of card under a different name and there has so far been no issue

    • +1

Depends if you have legit money or not..

  • +4

Silly question, when i pay using another CC will that come out as a cash advance, hence cost me lots of $s in interest?

    • +1

Possibly, if not its a good way of generating rewards points on the CC.

    • +1

Not a silly questions, I want to know too! Don't want to put $2000 for an overseas trip spending money and get smacked with a interest rate fee.

    • Yeah I tried my ING visa debit, but that didnt work. Oh well i just xfer'd $100 to another card & used it.

      • My ing debit card worked. Had a visa security check though where they sent me a otp Sms code.

    • Not a silly question, but I think cash advance would require entry of the PIN.

      • +1

No. I got stung years ago adding money to bet365 a/c via CC. I got my statement & was charges 20% interest on the amount from the day of the charge until I paid my whole balance off. I queried it & was told it was the equivalent of a cash advance.

        • I've got stung by the same thing in the past. Any chance you've tried using this or any other prepaid card to load your bet365 account?

        • @nateflight: no I used bank xfer. But they can't charge you interest since it's pre-paid. Apparently they don't charge ATM withdrawal fees (the ATM owner might charge you), whgich is a cash withdrawal, so I'm guessing you're ok. But you really need to ask them.

    • +3

I bought one with 10 dollar balance. When I checked my credit card, it said it was a payment for "Grocery & supermarkets". Does not seem like a cash advance. Don't know what will happen if you recharge though, that might be treated differently.

      • Yours doesn't show as "COLES FINANCIAL SERVICHAWTHORN EAST AU" ?

        • The merchant does show up as "Coles Finanical Services". But the type of payment says "Grocery & supermarkets"

      • Which credit card?

      • Awesome, if this is the case than this could be used to earn points off your CC. DYOR.

      • Last time, I thought you could buy the card itself for $10, but the website will block you from loading any more than that with a CC?

      • Let us know if you get charged a cash advance fee (hope you dont!)

  • +2

the only ways to top it up is either through direct debit or online transfer. just to note something.

  • +3

If you don`t link it to a Flybuys account during the application it automatically creates one for you…

  • Minimum $10 starting balance, correct?

    • Yep

  • Doh, AMEX not accepted as payment, was going to hammer it with my AMEX to get more points, then use the cards at places where AMEX is not accepted!

  • +2

Wait, so you need to spend a minimum of $4,000 to get $10 at Coles?

    I'll pass.

  • +3

When you have other credit card requiring you to spend a certain amount in a period of time, purchase as many of Coles Prepaid card (max $100 ea) to cover. Then withdraw the fund from Westpac Atm to pay off your other CC.

    • $5 fee for each card?

      • What do you mean ? If you withdraw from Westpac / Coles ATM, there is no charge to withdraw

  • Is there a limit on how many I can get? Thanks!

    • +1

Looks like you can add more than one in the same name to the same order…

      • Alright, thanks!
I just went through FAQ and it is actually mentioned there:
Can I buy more than one Coles Gift MasterCard or Coles Online MasterCard?
Yes, you can purchase up to 10 Coles Prepaid Cards in one transaction (excluding Coles Reloadable MasterCards).

So if I understand correctly, the limit of 10 cards is per transaction, i.e. I can buy even more by creating multiple orders.

  • +1

Possible to top up in store? Or only online?

    • +1

      Online only.

      • Can you top up online while you are in the store?

        • No, but you can top up on a basket of groceries you thought you didn't need once you go in for a bottle of milk.

        • @mrjames:

But the TimTams were half price :(

        • When I looked a while ago it said it was 'coming soon' to add money in selected stores. When I enquired with them, they have canned that feature with no plans to be able to do it. Must be funded from another bank account.

        • @beachmuscles:

Yeah my understanding is that the backend is a completely different company, coles licences the brand for marketing purposes.

        • @mrjames:

Is that like David Jones carpet cleaning?

I was expecting the aliens from the perfume counter to arrive with a steam cleaner

        • @beachmuscles:

Not going to happen since I don't think they are a deposit taking institution? (correct me if im wrong)
It would open up a can of worms as it would be a magnet for money laundering

  • +1

So does anyone know if this will be treated as cash advanced if paid via credit card??

  • +1

What's the best way to top up this card?
Has anyone confirmed topping up by CC got stung by cash advance rate?

  • It is pretty messed up in security - hard time paying it!

  • Any point giving credit card not treating this as a cash advance?

  • Hi guys I'm a bit retarded with regard to foreign exchange, would this be handy for a trip to Bali ?. I generally just pay for everything with a card so would this save me any money ?
