Not much of a deal compared to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/250771
But I guess it' s your only choice if you've already got an account and are unwilling to abandon it.

Yeah True, but i dont wanna lose all of my collections and playlists in the account. So deal breaker for me thou.

      • +10

Couldn't you just follow your previous account with the new one then directly save the collections and playlists to the new one?

        • +3

People pay for 'convenience & time". I.e. will pay because cbf'd

  • Looks like it's only available to people who aren't already on premium.

    "Ineligible for this offer"

  • where is the link to check if i'm eligible for this offer? because its on my account.

    • just log into your spofity account using web browser, u must not be premium.

Personally, I'd be subscribing to Spotify Family for $17.99 and split the cost with friends / family.

With Spotify Family you get Premium access for you PLUS 5 other friends or family

Each member has their own login so you won't be overwriting each others playlists etc

    • Even $18/month seems a lot. More than a family Netflix account, and those programs cost a fortune to produce, while anyone can make music as a hobby. You could abolish music copyright and it would still get made, just a lot of useless middle-men would be looking for productive work.

        seems a lot

Yes, but really it isn't. $3 a month per person is not much assuming you fill all 5 empty spots.

        • I mean a lot collectively. Like billions of dollars a year. Was not commenting on the cost/benefit for individuals.
I'm giving Spotify a try, and will see if it adds value for me. But I usually just listen to the radio. The old Nokia Music service was good, but recently shut down.

But reconsidering, while a large percentage of the population subscribe to Netflix, far fewer people will pay for Spotify. Maybe in future, they will be able to operate on a low-cost, high volume model, but that is in the control of the big music corporations. If Apple could force them to drop DRM, maybe there is hope.

        • OZ pricing… 0.99 GBP for 3 months according to my mate up there in the UK.

        • @pliukit:

Only 99 cents for 3 months here: (as above)

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/250771

          But thats a one-off trial.

        • @manic: Oh… I stand corrected.

      • ITT: the value you get from an entertainment product is directly related to how much it cost to produce.

        • In an efficient market, the price reflects productions costs, and may be a only a small fraction of the benefit.

Consider food. We pay less than 10% of our income perhaps, but the benefit is life itself. You would pay 100% of your income if you had to.

If I do find myself using Spotify, I'll happily pay. Just observing the economics. Like Foxtel's former $100/month, it may not be sustainable in the long run.

        • @manic:

Off topic: Incorrect. In what you would call an efficient market (an ideal scenario) the price is dependant on supply and demand. There is a price on the demand/supply curve where there is no surplus or deficit and, ideally, this is the price of the good or service. There are market failures that cause the supply and demand curves to shift and this is where you say "even $18 per month seems a lot"
How much value people find in a product is equal to how much people are willing to pay. If someone deems $18 too much for a good or service, they won't buy that good or service until the price drops below their target. This is simple economics and I'm not sure you understand that.

On topic: The alternatives for personal music are: paying for other music services, paying for songs/albums individually both online and in store or pirating music.

Since ozbargain does not condone illegal piracy, other people may find value in both this and the family deal. Besides, Spotify is awesome.

        • @AnneFagit:

Sure, I'm not questioning the value to customers. But in an ideal market you have multiple competing providers, so price should reflect production cost, rather than value to buyers. Keep in mind that marginal cost is next to zero (i.e. infinite supply), so its not like a typical commodity.

  • I've signed up for 3 months at $11.99 and then cancelled before - now only using a free account. Am I not eligible for this deal again? It popped up on my Spotify player on the computer but when I clicked it, it only gave me an option for 1 month at $11.99.
