[SUBS] Frieren (2023, Anime Series) Available to Stream from 1 March @ Netflix

1500

I know posting these are a bit controversial, but this one is a good one I promise!

8.9 rating on IMDB: https://m.imdb.com/title/tt22248376/

Description (edited from IMDB):

The demon king has been defeated, and the victorious hero party of four (mage Frieren, hero Himmel, priest Heiter, and warrior Eisen) return home before disbanding. The four reminisce about their decade-long journey as the moment to bid each other farewell arrives. But the passing of time is different for elves, thus Frieren witnesses her companions slowly pass away one by one. Before his death, Heiter manages to foist a young human apprentice called Fern onto Frieren. Driven by the elf's passion for collecting a myriad of magic spells, the pair embarks on a seemingly aimless journey, revisiting the places that the heroes of yore had visited. Along their travels, Frieren slowly confronts her regrets of missed opportunities to form deeper bonds with her now-deceased comrades.

I found it a bit slow to start but that’s the nature of it.. I’ll have to come back and give it another go.

    • +33

More of a beautiful roadtrip, less rollercoaster.

    • +6

Yep lost interest about half way in, but yeah glad I went back to it as it picks up and it's a great series.

    • +3

It's one of those where the pacing doesn't match everything else around you.

Definitely set some time aside one day so you can slow down and give it another go!

    • +1

do it, second half is soooo goooood

    • +1

The slow moments is where the show shines, its the entire point of the story

  • +5

    You corrupt priest…

    • +4

"ha ha ha ha" (pats you on the head)

    • -5

      Heil Heiter!

  • +5

Deserving of its #1 spot on myanimelist

    • +1

nahhhh…. only for people that haven't watched FMA Brotherhood or Attack on Titan. Frieren is great but far from an original master piece.

  • +14

Everyone should watch this. This show is one of the most insteresting, thought-provoking and entertaining stories ever told.

  • +10

The first five episodes are slow, but if you can get past them, I can say this is one of the best anime I have ever watched.

    • It surely can’t be better than solo levelling

      • +8

if solo levelling is the best you've ever seen then….. 😬

        • lol give me your top 5

          • +2

@freeb1e4me: dont get me wrong - ive been looking forward to each new ep of SL these past few months but main critique is the
            1. obvious plot armour - which takes away any fun / suspense of him potentially dying anytime soon
            2. story is super webtoon generic plot, fast paced and just "happens"
            3. its basically isekai which I hate, : 'nerdy useless guy goes to another dimension and becomes a chad'

but the animation is awesome tho I will say

and just for fun my top few would be (in no particular order)
            jjk
            Demon slayer
            chainsaw
            fireforce
            Fullmetal

I'm fully expecting you to critique my choices - so don't hold back

          • +2

@freeb1e4me: There are quite a lot till solo leveling…

The no brainers for the top 3:
            Fullmetal Alchemist
            Frieren
            Steins gate

Then Gundam 00, Code Geass, 86, Koe no Katachi, Clannad, Your Lie in April, Dandadan, etc…

Btw, i did enjoy Solo Leveling and finished its comic in 1 week. But it just cant be rated as high as above…

      • +4

Solo Leveling is top tier if you're after action, but if you can handle something slower paced, Frieren is much more well rounded.

        • +1

Well rounded you say…according to the comments here half the show is boring and picks up from there. Will watch it anyway

          • +3

@freeb1e4me: It's one of those where it just doesn't work for some.

If you can slow yourself down to the pace of the show and just be absorbed in it, it's honestly one of the best slow-paced animes I've watched.
If you can't, then obviously this show isn't for you (but do give it an honest try!).

I think it "picks up" later for some people in the second half because the pacing picks up and the show becomes more of a normal adventure anime.

      • +3

They aren't even in the same ballpark.

SL is just your bog standard power fantasy.

      • +3

Solo levelling isn't even mid - it's bad.

      • +4

I've read the webtoon for SL, it starts off pretty good but the MC powers up too quickly and then you don't even get to see him fight anymore as his summons do everything for him and nobody is even close to his level to give a real challenge it's such wasted potential.

I don't even understand why they bothered introducing the hunters from other nations as none of them can level up they are super irrelevant.

The art carries it hard, storyline is just a cheap ripoff of Hunter x Hunter. If you enjoy SL I'd recommend going back to watch HxH.

        • +2

          The art carries it hard

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I feel like this applies to Demon Slayer too.

Agreed with HXH. Such a good series.

          • +1

@Munki: Demon Slayer at least gives decent backstories for the characters even if the main plotline is pretty simple Kill Bill style affair, it's style over substance but arguably much better done than SL. I don't think Demon Slayer is "top 10 anime" but it's definitely a good action focused anime, some of the enemies have really cool powers.

      • +2

If you limit it to Netflix anime, then:

        Beastars
        Dandadan
        Delicious in Dungeon

        • Hear hear! These 3 shows are absolute bangers, loved them so much myself that I've went on to read the source material :D

        • +1

          Pluto is also good.

  • +2

Echoing the above comments about how great the show is. One thing I'd like to add that isn't mentioned as much - this anime shares heaps of common lore beats as the Dungeons & Dragons universe, with similar races (humans, elves, dwarves, demons and so on).

  • +2

The soundtrack for this is great.

    • +1

One could say it's a soundtrack you can listen to Anytime Anywhere.

  • VPN to Singapore server and you can watch it now.

  • +2

In my opinion, a bit overrated as an anime - but still solid. Give it a try for yourself though, it's worth it.

  • +1

I enjoyed this. Bit different from the usual fantasy anime, in that in the first episode the characters have already defeated the Demon King, becoming well known heroes, and it's not a flash forward sequence either.

  • +7

Gives you the same feelings The Hobbit does when you watch it. Nostalgia for an adventure you never had.

    • You have any recommendations for a fan cut of the films? Splitting it into 3 movies was such an obvious money grab.

  • +8

Reminds me of mushi-shi a bit, the story takes it's time, it properly examines the characters, the past and present, and includes an overarching story with vignettes of smaller stories.

An actual story, not another trash copy paste reborn show.

  • Excellent production. Worth the watch.

  • Why are these type of posts considered deals..?

    • +1

The site admins decided to allow them, I guess OzWhatsOnTVThisWeek was too long of a site name so they just accept them here instead. Real answer is it generates search engine results & clicks to the site.

      • I see your point, although, based on votes, it’s also pretty popular with registered users.

Ideally the category could be easily filterable via a setting.

  • is the best thing i watched in years, start slow but the second half when the battles starts is 10/10

    • How many episodes is it?

      • 28

      • -2

look, I don't want to give spoiler but think harry potter + hunger games

  • Free to watch with ads (no ads with Brave) up to episode 25 on Crunchyroll. I'm watching right now :)

  • highly recommend watching on 1.25 or even 1.5x speed with the speed dial on Netflix for the first few (non-action) episodes for those with short attention spans like me

    • I respect you faulting attention span over a lot of these comments labelling the opening episodes as slow haha

  • +1

best anime i have watched in recent 10 years

    • +1

I think JJK, AoT is a bit better.

  • +3

Honestly maybe the best anime I have ever watched based purely on the way it made me feel. It's very rare that anything makes me want to re-watch it instantly and this series did. Another commenter said it perfectly - makes you nostalgic for an adventure you never had.

Great action sequences in the latter episodes, loved the deadpan humour and had great character dynamics throughout.

  • -1

It should be coming to Crunchyroll as well given it was the case last time.

    • +3

Its been on CR from the start.

  • Such a good anime, wanting the next season already…

  • This is just an ad for Netflix

  • The first few episodes were incredibly boring. With this much hype, I don't doubt that it turns out in the end, but I just can't bring myself to sit through such boredom again.

  • +1

Final third was really shit. You can tell they needlessly stretched a pointless story arc to meet two seasons count. Regressed from what made the show unique into a generic fantasy show. Think of your usual BS cliffhanger hope is lost style cuts and then followed up with red herring comebacks. They could've compressed all of that into 3-5 episodes but nope here's 10.

  • One of must watch catoons. Best in 2024 from my opinion.

  • Aside from the pacing, which I think is fine, the cinematography is excellent.

  • Frieren's encounters with mimics are the best!

  • I just started watching this and I have to say it's SO GOOD! I previously steered away because It looked a bit slow and not very action-packed, but I saw a couple clips of some fights and thought okay these sequences are great, i'll give it a go.

So far I haven't seen many action scenes, but i don't even mind because the character moments are so nice. It gives me studio ghibli vibes. Beautiful animation, nice music, big on character development and introspection. It's a nice slow burner (and I know there are some banger fights to come)

  • As a person who has watched all types of anime since the 80's classics like ghost in the shell, ninja scroll OG neon genesis etc. Frieren is the breath of fresh air that anime has needed for probably the last 10 years, it is not your main stream shonen.

JJK, Demonslayer, etc are the normal big hitters because of action and fight scenes, but my faith in anime is renewed when this dropped. This is the type of anime which would define a generation, much like AOT.

  • Such a beautiful Anime, totally worth the watch

  • And season 2 was announced a few months ago. And if you've been reading the manga, Its going to be magnificent. Especially during a certain arc. Makes you wonder if its the same author. I really like the english dub of the anime as well. Frieren VA suits her chill attitude.
