10/100 RJ-45 Ethernet network… What year is this? Is that serious?

    • Yes, sadly it seems to have the 10/100 Realtek RTL8106E chipset.

    • Unforgiveable, can only be to make other models more attractive.

      Matches my internet speed.

10/100 RJ-45 Ethernet network… What year is this? Is that serious?

Yeah, I think it was around 1998 when I first converted to using 100 RJ-45 Ethernet connections. Such cost cutting is inexcusable for a laptop that has a RRP of $1899. Well spotted.

      Current year!

      And DVD…

yep i saw that and clicked away… pathetic

  • Now realized it was mentioned in this post, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/248316

It's only counted as a duplicate if it's mentioned in the title of the other post, so you're fine.

  • Looks like good specs for the money.

AFA the ethernet, I'd think most would be using the wi-fi??

If you needed to hardwire, there are USB-to-Ethernet adapters.

    Cheers!

So, use up the one and only USB 3.0 port on the laptop for this?
And before you say "get a USB 3.0 hub" .. well it's insane to have to connect up all these extra devices when Dell could have spent an extra couple of dollars on a GigE chipset.

      • You mean, like you need to do with this?

        ;)

    • True that you'd be using the wifi most of the time at home, but for me the only time i use the LAN cable is when i need the speed that wifi can't provide, ie copying movies to the laptop.

I think it's to make is uesless to business customers and force them onto the much more expensive Latitude models.

Not interested in this, but looked at some others.

Why do they go through this tedious "enter coupon code for 30% off" business rather than just say "price after 30% off is $X"?

  • Excellent value for what it is!

  • USB 3.0 (1)
    USB 2.0 (2)

Why is Dell still selling laptops with USB2? That's so last century. Might as well go for this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/246687

USB 2.0 ports still have their place. There are some hardware devices that simply won't work on a USB 3.0 port (despite its backwards compatibility with older USB versions). And also, you will likely have some devices they don't need USB 3.0 (eg mouse/keyboard). But I do agree that one USB 3.0 port isn't enough. It really should have 3 x USB 3.0 and 1 (or 2) x USB 2.0 ports.

      • Exactly, try installing Windows 7 on a laptop without a USB2.0 port. I had that fun recently with an Inspiron 7000

That Video card looks very very weak no matter how much VRAM they throw into it.

Don't they offer an SSD option?

    • +4

Dell don't offer squat anymore, this is a straight to consumer type laptop so usually what you see is what you get and no changing of specs.

Imagine how we feel when we use them for business, we used to be able to take a laptop and spec it to exactly what we needed now you have to email an account manager who may or may not get back to you within a week … and that's just to change RAM to 16 gig or a simple request…

Dell in their wise stupidity have taken the 1 thing that actually differentiated them to others.. the ability to spec up or down the Laptop/desktop … and order the damn thing…

      • Yes, that was the sign there when Inspiron range made it to their business lineup.

    • Is it possible to swap out for an SSD yourself later?
Is the hard drive bay easily accessed, and will it void the warranty?

      • yeh should be fairly easy to swap, i would run up the installed HDD so that its working (OS wise) and keep that somewhere, install the SSD and if there is any issue (not related to the SSD) id swap the original back and send the device to them to fix. I would highly recommend the onsite warranty the technicians that come aren't overly concerned they change the broken part and leave :)

My 4 year old inspiron has better specs than this hunk o junk. Dell used to offer value, but have gone back to the bad old days. Sad indeed.

  • Sad but 'Fast' Ethernet is often spec for mid range models to distinguish the top dollar models with Giga Ethernet. Totally pathetic but very common practice for all the laptop OEMs afaik

    Fake "discount", I reckon.

An inspiron 5000 with HD, 4gb RAM, and i5 is $799.

    So they add:

    Graphics card (useless model),
    i7,
    12gb ram,
    Touch FHD

and suddenly the RRP is $1899, i.e $1,100 more. Laughable. Actual cost increase would be about $300, but they charge $1,100 extra.

    • I think you mean: Real "discount", or Fake discount

  • I think it's not a bad price although I would have thought this is better value: http://www.centrecom.com.au/acer-v-nitro-156-i7-ips-laptop.

    • When acer upgraded from 571 to 572, they incorporated the on/off switch into the keyboard for some stupid reason, and moved 4 important keys to inconvenient locations. Apart from that, it's a good laptop. The quad core version is more powerful, but has bad battery life.

  • Dell's EOFY sale as a whole is awful. They're passing off the usual free office 360 as a "sale offer" on their XPS 13s.

Its a dual core with a crappy GPU for way too much !

Did the OP see a really big reduction and think after said reduction item was now at a bargain price ?
