This is what the price should be the original price is a joke

Basically add $100+ for an SSD. No point having 5400rpm.

    • Does this have an Msata or similar slot so you can use both? Small SSD for the OS then the HDD for dumping media would be best.

      • +1

According to the review on their site: YES

        "Excellent Mainstream Gaming Laptop
        19 October 2015
Yes, I would recommend this product
Great package for those looking for a powerful laptop for work and gaming. Screen quality is pretty decent and cooling is really great. Laptop got around 4500 graphics score in firestrike. Easy access to internals ( open one screw) and can upgrade ram, m.2 ssd and hard drive. I added in an m.2 2280 ssd and it worked great. I have to say, i think Dell has a home run here.
Pros:easily upgradeable, quad core processor, 960 m graphics
Cons:screen could be a bit brighter"

      • It has a slot for an M.2 drive so you can have SSD boot drive and HDD for storage

Very easy to access as well as has a single large panel fixed by just one screw to access all the components

hybrid drive part ssd part hdd is pretty fast, I am using one now.

      • +1

Definitely. Once you enable Windows 10 Fast boot, it boots just as fast as an SSD and the hybrid storage portion of the drive does a great job at storing a lot of my program files.

      • I used the stock hybrid HDD in my laptop for over a year, recently swapped to SSD and IMO the difference is massive.

    • Or put that $100 towards an ssd of your own choosing.

Wait- thought this was the XPS 15 by mistake. Can I unvote? Yep- I can. Clicked on the "votes" button, and then the minus logo.

  • I'm actually looking for a laptop just like this, and the closest i could get was a 6200U a and a 940m for about $1000. This looks like a great deal to me.

If people reckon there is better value to be had, I would genuinely appreciate a link =)

    • This model is a pretty good value model . But the screen quality is average , just check Amazon reviews to avoid buyer remorse ( though the chance for that is less )

    • Have you checked clevo rebrands like metabox ?

      • +1

Yeah they're a LOT more than $1k, albeit for a much better laptop.

        • Really? Last time i checked i saw one for about 1.3k. My clevo is on most of the day, every day. So satisfied with it. Chugging on about 3 years now. And the gamut screens are unbelievable. They blow macbook pro retina screens out of the water.

        • +1

          @tomkun01:

I just bought a Metabox today so I'm pretty solid on the prices right now - cheapest is the N550RC, which is $1199 - but that's without a hard drive, or operating system. If you've got a hard drive to install and either a Windows key or are planning on running Linux on it, then you can get one for 1.2k, but if not you have to budget an extra 250 to have it ready to go.

Good to know you rate yours though, having never handled one or seen one I'm somewhat nervous I'll hate it!

        • +1

@goatcorn: Clevo are simply incomparable to major brands. Windows 10 is cheap, and so are SSDs (via ozbargain). Enjoy your premium laptop!

        • @goatcorn: Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the N550RC have a 950m?

        • +1

@stainedteatowel: It does mate, yeah. From what I can gather the difference between that and the next model up, the N150RD that I went for, is i5 vs i7 and 950m vs 960m.

        • +1

@goatcorn: Very understandable :) I've got a Metabox, has an 850m. Very good laptop, love how easy it is to get access to the internals.

        • @stainedteatowel: Do you know if adding a hard drive is a matter of unscrewing the bottom panel and slotting it in, or a fiddly job? Thinking about putting the hdd from my current piece of crap in to keep files I don't use often in but I've never done owt like that before.

        • +1

@goatcorn: Mine was straight forward (I have the w650sj). Take out two screws, slide panel off and I had access to the 2.5" bay and other areas. I ended up getting an adapter so I can use the optical bay as another 2.5" HDD bay. Process would possibly vary on a different model, you could probably find a disassemble video on youtube of your particular laptop.

    • Just import a laptop from Amazon US, even with shipping costs it'd wayyyy cheaper.

      • Yes, this is/was currently $699US,
        Less than $950aus without shipping.

      • Dell in particular doesn't offer international warranties. Asus does however, so I'll look at them. Cheers!

    • +1

Same model with 256GB SSD (no 1TB 5400 RPM) + IPS screen is $799 USD on Amazon.com - you will require a freight forwarder though.

      http://www.amazon.com/Dell-15-6-Inch-Quad-Core-i5-6300HQ-Pro…

      • Exactly, or the 4k screen version with i7 is only 999USD

      • Also the different charging cable voltage and plug.

        • +1

Most laptops have a dual voltage power adaptor - meaning you only need to replace the cord that runs from the adaptor to the wall (usually a clover cord or a figure 8) which is a $10 addon at most.

        • @douglasac10:

Exactly, really no pointed getting shafted by these stupid AU prices, only on sale atm as with the announcement of pascal (new nvidia gpu series) a product refresh will be coming in June/July anyway I'd imagine.

        • @bloobat: Should also add I've been told by someone (here I think?) that one can transfer Dell USA warranty to Dell AU warranty also - although I haven't confirmed this myself beware.

        • @Diji1:
When I was in the states they said it wasn't possible, but that was 2 years ago.

        • -1

@douglasac10: Ah yes, forgot about the figure 8/clover cord.

        • @douglasac10: where you can buy clover cord with european plug in Australia? thanks :)

Not having a go at the OP but I feel like laptop bargains should simply not be posted without an SSD. It would be like posting a car bargain with a horse instead of an engine.

More a general whine sorry :p

    • A hybrid hdd is…passable. For the the high quality specs, it seems to be a good bargain - see above, only internationally, via a reshipper, without warranty, is cheaper.

    • +2

Shh OP will ban your ip ;p

    • +1

SSDs generally aren't that difficult to install. Plenty of OzBargainers would rather buy a laptop without one than pay Dell's add-on prices.

    • I beg to differ. Almost all manufacturers charge double the price for an ssd. I'll take a spinning drive over an ssd from these companies and change it myself. For the same price you'll get a bigger ssd and a mechanical spare.. takes like 20mins to swap and clone

  • The chasis of this model is very similar to inspiron 14 7447. It can be found on the outlet store for ~ 800 dollars with 4720HQ and 850m, full HD.

Maybe be an alternative buy for some and 2/3 the price.

  • how long will this coupon last for?

    • 200 uses.

  • Thanks OP, bought one for the daughter πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

  • is the i7 worth it for 128ssd and i7 processor?

  • And I only got 14 upvotes when I posted the laptop for $1119.2

    • You're not the boss!

If you want to try before you buy, they are at JB Hi-fi.

    Positives:

    • Great power - quad core and 960 gpu. (But do you need that much power?)
    • Perfect keyboard layout if you want a numpad.
    • Backlit keyboard.
    • All USB's are USB 3.0.
    • Matte screen, not gloss (but that could be a negative for some people).

    Negatives:

    • Bad trackpad.
    • Sort of rubbery keyboard.
    • Heavy.
    • Screen lottery. Two different screen suppliers for these - one bad one, one moderate. I've phoned Dell and chatted with them online and they have no clue which one these currently come with.
    • Windows 10 (but that might be a positive for some people).
    • +1

I have a laptop very similar to these specs and none of the above negatives apply as I plug in all the peripherals and use an external monitor. Kinda defeats the purpose of having a laptop I know. But I got the laptop for $270 through a work deal.

    • +1

Just had another try at JB hi-fi. Three more cons:

      • Key travel is tiny, so it slows down typing speed.

      • It was warm under the keyboard even though it wasn't doing any hard work (but this was i7, so i5 might not be so warm).

      • The lid feels too weak - risky to pick the laptop up with one hand as it might bruise the screen.

So this laptop has too many compromises for me. YMMV.

  • For anyone considering the i7 model .. the discount code doesn't seem to work for that .. well it didn't for me anyway.

  • I think the voucher code does not work anymore. It is now $1399 after $300 cash back from Dell :(
