  • aside from branding, what is the difference between this item and this one from aliexpress for US$0.32 delivered?

    • +6

The BlitzWolf is a reputable product and won't result in a deep-fried Nexus.

      • but has anyone tested whether this blitzwolf adapter is spec compliant?

        • +1

I purchased a cable in the last deal and it was to spec. I assume they are using the correct spec for all thier type c products.

        • +3

          @matust:

are you talking about the following deal?
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/238617

you have personally tested the cable to be spec compliant, or you are relying on the OP's listing that says it's "benson approved"?

the cable in that deal is NOT benson approved. the listing was misleading and should have been changed. the cable MAY in fact be spec compliant, but it is NOT "benson approved", and afaik nobody has confirmed this to be the case (benson has not tested that cable, he has only tested the braided cable).

if you personally have tested the cable to be spec compliant, then great! :)

        • @caprimulgus:
That looks like the deal. I tested the cable myself before I used it. You can use an app from the play store or a terminal emulator. I did both and it passed with both.

        • @caprimulgus:

Yeah I bought 3 of them without checking if they were.

I am sort of worried, but I also sort of trust Blitzwolf.

Maybe OzB can chip in and give Benson a cable to test out?

        • +1

          @matust:

          ah cool, nice one!

i still think the original post was very misleading and should have been changed because it gave people false confidence relying on the cable as "benson approved" (which it almost certainly is not). but as long as the cable IS spec compliant after all, then that works out great for everyone! :)

unfortunately I don't have an android device with type c, so i can't check cables/adapters myself. (i don't think there is a way to do it on windows phone)

        • @caprimulgus:

"Benson Leung has failed a few cables that pass checkr [Type-C checking app] though, so it isn’t infallible. Rather than an app that requires me to try using the cable to get an unreliable answer, I’d go with the engineer who is testing the actual electrical characteristics of the cables. "

          http://lifehacker.com/benson-leung-has-failed-a-few-cables-t…

Not sure to be honest. But the fact it passes the app is promising.

        • @StrayfireX:

yeah, i don't really trust checkr results either…a cable that passes checkr might be fine for our current phones, but may not work with pixel C or future devices (or may break a part of the spec that checkr doesn't test). hence why cables that have passed checkr have failed benson's tests.

i believe the developer of checkR has removed it from the play store, because they didn't want to be responsible for people relying on potentially incorrect results.

it's all too much of a headache! for now, i'm sticking to my official (microsoft) cables, and i will only buy "benson approved" (the ones he has ACTUALLY approved, not just ones that "should be ok too"). even if a cable would work fine with my phone, i don't want to introduce a non-compliant cable into my collection, and potentially damage future devices down the track!

easier to just wait for a "benson approved" cable! :)

        • @matust: whats the app called on the Play Store? I'd like to try it out with some type-c cables I got off ebay! thanks

        • @genes888:
This is the app I used to test
          https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.mderezynski.checkr
I can still get it because I had previously downloaded it but looks like it isn't available in Australia an more. Strange

        • @matust:

See my comment above. The developer removed the app from the app store because the testing method it uses is not completely reliable.

My understanding is that your Nexus will be fine, it's designed to handle 3A. It's your power source that might burn out.

Some cables don't signal to the Nexus that they might be connected to a device that is only capable of a lower current. Therefore, when the Nexus tries to pull 3A from your PC USB port, or a standard AC to USB charger brick, the PC or charger brick will be overloaded and burn out.

  • +2

I'm still waiting on my USB-C cable from the last deal.

  • +1

It would be great if these cam with a small eyelet so they could be kept of a keyring.

  • I've got 2 Xiaomi ones for $1 each when I traveled to China. Works fine so far.

    • +1

let us know when your phone fries

      • Rofl…….Monster cable drama all over again.

        • your comparing marketing unsubstantiated subjective gold plating quality vs incorrectly specced resistors that can fry your device?

dont talk shit if you dont know anything about electronics

        • @furythree: Have you tried the Xiaomi ones? or you don't even know the brand? Whole bunch of phones in China have usb type C and this is the most popular converter that does the job. The ones that fry your phone are the dirt cheap ones which only sells 20c locally yet being marked up to $3 Aus to rip you off.

          http://www.amazon.com/Xiaomi-Original-Adapter-Oneplus-Device…

dont talk shit if you dont know anything about electronics

Or to a noob like you dont talk shit if you dont know how to google

        • @MadMaxBargainRoad: the xiaomi ones have already been proven to not be compliant against usb type C

          theyre not benson approved

and buying xiaomi off ebay is like buying beats headphones from a market stand in shenzen. chance of getting a legit one is iffy

          whos the noob now

        • @furythree: Your inability to find genuine products on eBay is not my problem. As I said, keep buying your Monster cables. I don't give a crap. All I pointed was that the Xiaomi ones are ok if you can get them cheap (eg. Travelling to Asia or seeing them on a deal from the China sale sites). Stop trying to misinform other people with your lazy generalisation.

        • @MadMaxBargainRoad: i dont buy monster cables, i also dont buy unsafe non compliant cables or adapters

The ones in these thread are not benson approved (or disapproved) but the ones that are braided are benson approved.

The xiaomi ones have been EXPLICITLY stated to be non compliant with the incorrect resistor

and you insist on that instead of doing research because "these are ok if you can get them cheap"

yet youre call me lazy when youve done zero research clearly

please tell me what qualifications or research youve done to recommend people xiaomi usb C adapters? i buy a ton of other xiaomi products, but not these adapters specifically

        • @MadMaxBargainRoad: whats wrong? ran out of excuses?

  • If I order these from Banggood now, will they arrive before type D USB is out?

    • +3
      • lol….

      • -1

I don't understand the cross design on type d, why not just make it circular? Surely that would be the easiest to plug in?

        • +3

Look at the date of posting ;)

      • Unfortunately, it doesn't say if it will be backward compatible. At only 1.2GW, usb-D may not be able to handle quick charge, so I'm going to stick with Usb-C.

        • 1.21GW is perfect for me - been using it for years!

        • lol… that article is an April fools joke people!!!!

        • +1

@genes888: did you notice that we are deliberately referring to GigaWatts? 1.2 billion watts will charge an awful lot of phones.
1.21GW is what it took to operate the time machine in Back to the Future, which makes sense if you notice McFly's user name. http://www.wired.com/2013/09/how-do-you-get-1-21-gigawatts-f…

  • Is this a Benson approved connector?

    • Has not been tested by Benson.

  • Hey mr banggood!
Any chance of doing sales on blitzwolf apple lightning cables anytime soon? Pretty please?! :)

  • The deal is still going.

    Just ordered one for AUD$3.47
