I just bought a Nexus 5X in the recent JB Hifi deal and I have had a lot of trouble finding APPROVED USB Type C cables that are either available in Australia for a decent price or can be delivered to Australia.

For those of you that don't know, it's been widely reported that some cables are "so poorly made they can ruin your expensive hardware".] (http://lifehacker.com/buy-safe-usb-type-c-cables-by-looking-…)

To cut a long story short, cables should be "Benson approved" as per this reddit post. https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus6P/comments/3robzo/google_spre…

Anyway I found this Blitzwolf cable on Banggood, and as you can see on Amazon's page, Benson approves:
http://www.amazon.com/review/R1AF6ZHBZRQFHV/ref=cm_cr_dp_tit…

Free shipping too. Enjoy!

EDIT: 10% off BlitzWolf products. Thanks to @Camw

I haven't used this USB Type C of theirs, But I can vouch for Micro USB and Apple (MFI Certified) BlitzWolf cables, they are top of the range, high quality. better than any other.

    • +1

I agree. I loved their products so much that I don't sell any other brand of cables on eBay.

      • whos ur supplier i thought BW was banggoods own brand

        • Blitzwolf. If you fly to China, you can meet them and have a tour of the factory :D

        • @djcharliek: u actually flew there?!

do they sell bulk/wholesale to anybody? any chance u know the MOQ? im thinking of getting a whole heap for friends and family. 2-3 cables each is easily 20-30

        • @furythree:

Yes these guys will sell in bulk to anyone. They don't discriminate like done of the big manufacturers I've tried to deal with.

        • @furythree:

Nah haven't been there really but I will need to visit them if I'm going to sell more volume.

I see their products as very good value for money compared to the rubbish cables you can find on ebay.

        • @djcharliek: do you have some contact info/website i can use to reach out to them? thanks for the replies

        • @furythree:

If you are not going to bulk order, banggood.com is your best bet for cheapest prices. I sell some of their stuff on ebay if you need it next day or same day pick up.

I have a few of their apple mfi cables on their way now. Will post up a deal on ozb once they are here.

        • @djcharliek: is 20 cables considered bulk?

          how about 1-200?

        • @furythree:

Nope. Generally they are after orders of 100 plus per item to be considered wholesale.

If you need the cables quickly, Let me know which items you are after and I'm happy to give you a quote.

        • @djcharliek: sent u a pm

  • Was looking for a replacement when I tried to pick one up the official google one but found they were out of stock. Good find!

  • Thank-you great timing

  • Thanks. Perfect timing :)

  • Just what's been looking for! Also a new Nexus 5X owner. It's a shame they decided they couldn't provide a cable that cost less than $1 to make.

  • +2

new nexus 5x owner as well ( jb sale ). perfect! thanks

  • +4

The one you linked isn't the one reviewed (which was USB 2.0). But I would hope that it's also made according to standards, since they got their USB 2.0 cables right!

    • -2

However, Benson's comment is posted on Amazon's BlitzWolf 3A cable page which is the same as the Bangood Product. He comments: "Blitzwolf has corrected their listing information on Amazon for all colors and variants of this cable to be more accurate."- So I've assumed his review applies to both variants of the cable.

      • +2

"colors and variants" most likely refers to the other coloured version of the cable (the braided usb 2.0 cables). the review is specific about the cable being usb 2.0, and about how it is not compatible with usb 3.1, so i very much doubt he is referring to the usb 3.1 version.

more to the point, the usb 3.1 cable is not braided, and the sheath/housing for the connectors is completely different. so it is not really a "variant". most likely, it was added to the listing AFTER his review was done.

hopefully it's still spec compliant, but i wouldn't rely on those word in benson's review to have any meaning whatsoever for the usb 3.1 cable.

12Blitzw coupon code worked for 10% off BlitzWolf products for me.

    • Bought 3 which drops the average cost down below $8 and with the code got them delivered all for $20.60. Cheers OP and Camw.

  • +1

    Great times

    • +1

      thanks blass

  • This could also be an option if you want both the cable and a car quick charger.

    • +1

      What?

      • Sorry….wrong link. This https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/235457

        • +2

Unfortunately not the same cable, still a good buy tho

        • @dewy: that's right, just another option if anyone is looking to kill 2 birds with one stone like I am.

        • +1

          @MyWah:

i think you missed the point - it's a completely different type of cable, with a different connection. if your device charges by usb-c, then that cable will not work (Without an adapter).

so not really another option (if you have usb-c).

        • +3

@caprimulgus: Yeah you're right! Craaaap, I've really screwed this up. I was thinking it was usb-c in the link i provided. Everyone can ignore my stupid advice. Sorry yo. Having a shocker.

        • +3

          @MyWah:

          all good mate. :)

  • +2

12Blitzw worked for me too. I bought 2 for $14.53.

Can the OP please update the deal with the code?

  • +1

Great timing…. Ordered 3, paid extra for faster delivery, cause need them now :)

  • +1

Thanks OP been looking for a Deal like this.

  • Bring on the C Type!

  • I bought this one off eBay and it works perfectly fine (actually even better than the original cable as this one clicks in so well with my Nexus 6P) and cost only $2.99:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321970998419?_trksid=p2057872.m27…

What's the difference between this and an approved cable?

  • +1

    I got one, thanks op!

  • -1

For a while there the coupon get bringing the price down to $0, but it corrected itself after going to the next step :(

  • Thanks OP. Great find. Perfect timing given I also just bought the 5x through JB.

  • +2

Thanks OP - have ordered 2.
Another possibility here is the Tronsmart USB-C to Micro USB Adapter. Benson has done a review of this adapter on Amazon - and this also is "Benson approved."
There is an ebay vendor in china selling a pack of 2 for about AUD10.00 with free postage. If you order same item from a US vendor price is about the same but postage is high $.
I've order a pack of the Tronsmart to keep in the cars - am assuming they are the genuine product …

    • Can you provide a link please? Can't seem to find it

      • +1

        it's ebay item 331747981715.
If you search on amazon for "Tronsmart Type-C Adapter micro" it should come up as first item. Benson's review is there.

    • I bought a 6-pack of Tronsmart micro-USB cables (different product obviously) and the micro-USB plug doesn't make a solid connection to my devices on half of them.

      • yes - Tronsmart stuff has had some mixed reviews in the past. I was relying on Benson's 5 stars for the adapter.

  • +1

    Thanks OP - ordered three!

  • +3

All the upvotes make me want to buy 3 of these cables even though I don't have any USB type C devices…

  • -4

Just be careful, because a lot of USB 3 C cables have destroyed laptops. Google it along with Amazon (as they were a mass seller). AFAIK it was more than one brand.

Not saying that's in any way related to this brand but I just know I'd want to research it carefully before buying.

    • +1

I can definitely recommend this brand. They make quality usb cables. I tried Tronsmart and other so called high quality cables which didn't last. I have tried and tested many of their products and pricing is reasonable and product quality is excellent.

    • +1

That information is covered in the OP if you'd bothered reading it

      • -6

        Don't be rude.

        • +2

You clearly didn't read the description before commenting. It's a reasonable expectation to do so. My criticism was deserved.

  • Such a shame that they don't sell 1.5m+ cables. I find the 1m variety so frustratingly short.

    • +2

They do sell braided version in 1m, 2m and 3m long.

The 2m and 3m one have to pre-order.

This braided version is what Benson Leung's review reffering to.

      • -1

Those are 2.4A variants. The Nexus 5x can handle up to 3A. These cables will work, but will not charge as quickly.

        • The cable you linked won't be charging at 3A either. At most it will taking 1.5A.

        • @raven2000: What makes you say that?

        • +1

@thecrevis: Standards compliant cables will negotiate legacy mode on type-A to type-C cables, which will be up to 1.5A normally, or 2.4A if it's using the apple standard.

        • @raven2000: Then if I'm reading Benson correctly this can't be compliant:

Can Qualcomm QC and USB Type-C coexist on the same connector?
I get this question sometimes, so I wanted to do a quick post to address it.
          tl;dr : Type-C Spec forbids it.

          Specification:

Fast Charging: Supports 5V/9V/12V fast charging at up to 3A current, compatible with Qualcomm QC2.0, Qualcomm QC3.0, MTK
Pump Express Plus and other fast charging technology.

        • Yes, I was reading right.
As BUG (Benson the USB Guru) says:

Section 4.8.2 of the Type-C spec forbids Non-USB charging methods like Qualcomm QC that can change voltage on Vbus beyond 5V, so these two lines cannot be true either. Compliant Type-C devices and chargers cannot support methods like QC that can change voltage to 9V or 12V.

          http://www.amazon.com/review/R1AF6ZHBZRQFHV/ref=cm_cr_dp_tit…

Edit: Oh, that's for the braided version, but anyway the rule is universal.

        • @McFly:

looks like this cable is not spec compliant then! that indicates that the benson review does NOT apply to this cable, and this cable is NOT "benson approved", as implied by the OP.

although, that part of the spec seems to be written in reference to the charger/device…not sure how it applies to cables.

having said that, even if it is not spec compliant, it is still not clear to me what this means exactly…benson doesn't seem to have provided a clear answer on the consequences of breaching that specific part of the spec. it COULD be that these cables are completely fine to use, even if they are not spec compliant.

this whole spec thing is too confusing for me!

(he has some explanation in the comments of device/charger "confusion" that may arise, but i don't follow it…someone else might understand it better than me!) :)

        • @caprimulgus: I think (in the case of half-decent cables like these) non-compliant pretty much means the resistor is the wrong value, which could result in the device requesting more current than the power supply is capable of supplying (and possibly the other way around.)

        • @McFly:

i think (could be completely wrong!) this a different issue from the usage of correct resistor value (which may also be an issue, however, given the braided cables use the correct resistor, the unbraided ones should have the correct resistor too).

this issue is about QC taking control of / modifying the vbus (something about something becoming a "sink"): that is how QC negotiates the level of charging outside of default, however that is not allowed under spec. the level of charging is supposed to be done through Power Delivery, without modifying the vbus.

HOWEVER, that is about compatibility between QC and the type-c spec…what they mean by this cable being "QC compatible", i'm not sure. ie. whether they have actually modified anything, or whether they are just using that as marketing BS (in which case, this is merely a confusion-perpetuating marketing issue!).

eg. if they have modified this cable somehow to make it QC compliant, then this cable may be not spec compliant. however, if this is a regular spec compliant cable, and they have just stated on the marketing that it is QC compatible, then this doesn't mean the cable is not spec compliant.

          i'm confused! :)

        • @caprimulgus:

i think (could be completely wrong!) this a different issue from the usage of correct resistor value

Well, if not then it's something to do with some other modification for QC compatibility. The way I read BUG was that QC compliant=wrong resistor. Maybe not.

however, given the braided cables use the correct resistor, the unbraided ones should have the correct resistor too

Don't fall into that trap! You would have thought so, but no - BUG has tested almost identical cables which were different enough to give different results, and also different revisions of the 'same' cable which became compliant (usually because BUG told them they were dodgy!)

i'm not sure. ie. whether they have actually modified anything, or whether they are just using that as marketing BS (in which case, this is merely a confusion-perpetuating marketing issue!)

I've just had a look, and as far as I can tell, there is no such thing as a QC-cable. As long as the data lines are there and the thing can carry the extra power it will work. So I suspect it's a steaming pile of marketing BS.

So then we are back to square one!

          i'm confused! :)

Tell me about it. We will work out how to produce power from fusion before the average person would be able to understand all this!
How many people even have a clue about eg. what an amp is???

        • @McFly:

          Sooo, the consensus is…

          1)
These cables aren't really all they're cracked-up to be.
          2)
There's prolly better options for roughly the same am't.

        • +1

@jalyst: I don't know that we can determine that yet!
As far as other options - I haven't looked that hard, but neither have I come across any 'perfect' ones that are actually available here.

  • +1

    Bought one, thanks OP!

  • Anyone found a decent backup usb-c charger?

  • +1

bought one…thanks OP…now need to get a good case and screen protector…any suggestions?

    • For which phone? I got a rhino bumper for my 6p and a dbrand for the back.

      • +1

for my 5x…dbrand ships to au is it?

        • Yep, they ship it through a letter mail.

  • Thanks op, bought 3 of them =)

  • These are also a Benson approved option. 4-pack, about 1m in length, and work well for me:

    http://www.amazon.com/Orzly®-Certified-Multi-Colour-USB-C-Charging/dp/B018F8BGLA

    • "This item does not ship to Australia."

      • Sorry about that. It did in December when I bought it. Odd that they stopped.

    • This is the one I ordered a few days ago. It's actually USB 3.1, which this one probably isn't.

Have to change the seller to their other export company, total of 25USD shipped.

      • Both are 3.1 Gen 1…

        Amazon one (according to Benson):

This cable also supports USB 3.1 Gen 1, meaning it supports SuperSpeed 5gbps operation.

        This deal:

Data Sync Speed: Up to 5Gbps

  • +1

will this cable work on charging the Apple 12" macbook, with the OEM charger block??

    • +2

Apple Charger for MacBook 12" requires USB-C to USB-C cable, not the one listed here.

      • The Apple charger that comes with the MacBook 12" has a USB-C connection on it.

Do we know for sure that it won't charge with this type of cable plugged in to a USB adapter?

        • I didn't say it won't charge with USB-C to USB-A cable.

What I meant is the charger comes with MacBook 12" fitted with USB-C receptacle, and the MacBook 12" only fitted with an USB-C receptacle, therefore it needs an USB-C to USB-C cable to work with.

        • Sorry you're right, I didn't see the part of the question that said "with the OEM charger block"

Ordering 2 of these for my MacBook 12"

  • Putting those Banggood Christmas points to good use. Thanks OP!

  • thanks op, bought one.

  • Can anyone recommend some cheap reliable micro usb 2.0 (type b) cables and wall chargers from either amazon or ebay?

  • +2

Dude!! Wish I could give you more than. One upvote! I spent wayyyy too long trying to find a reasonably priced Benson approved cable that would ship to au! Great job!!

    • haha i love this. It took me hours to find! Thanks for the feedback!

  • +1

Cheers OP! Been having a difficult time trying to source an actual USB Type-C compliant cable for my Lumia 950. Been through 3 on Ebay so far!

  • Must have gone up, now $8.06.

Opps, missed the coupon code. 12Blitzw

  • Thanks for posting this, ordered 2. Needed to use the desktop version to find the promo code field. Couldn't find it in the mobile version.

Website is now in "pre order" not "order". Will have to wait a few weeks more for mine.

  • ordered on the weekend and now got an email saying its out of stock until 31/3.

    • Me too.

      • Me three.

  • +1

I need one asap, any thoughts on this?

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/accessories/belk…

Yes its not a bargain, but I need cable now not in 2 months. :)

    • If you can wait for a few day, Google play store is a better choice.

      Edit:

Sorry, sold out at Google play store.

    • Try ebay. There are a few people selling blitzwolf stuff who have stock in Australia.
