Virgin Mobile: Nokia 5800, ($19 Min & $50 Value) a Month, ($0 Min & 1 GB Free) 1st 3 Months

270
autumn

The Phone
Touch screen phone (stylus) with LED flash camera and video, + 2nd mini camera on front for video calls.
Phone includes GPS aerial, supports some wireless internet (I forget if it's b, g &/or n) and allows more than 1 bluetooth connection at a time (I've used a keyboard and headset simultaneously). MicroSD slot (8GB MicroSD card included??). Output to tv is possible. Accelerometers in phone as well. 3.5 mm jack for audio and/or tv output. You can use handwriting, a virtual mobile phone keypad, or a mini virtual keyboard for input. (I also use a Bluetooth keyboard with it for writing documents etc)

Many free apps and free GPS with turn by turn navigation are available from the Nokia ovi site. Note: I do think the navigation software could do with some improvements on course plotting and to make it much more user friendly. But I haven't used dedicated GPS systems much so I don't know how much better they are.

Oh, and last time, they said all their phones apart from iPhones, are unlocked. If you are interested, you could call them to confirm if the phone is unlocked again.

Update
Members report that marking they are existing customers, means that they are inelligible to have the first 3 months access for $0. They can still have the plan on $19 compared with the usual $29.
It's somewhere in the fine print that only new custodmers get the first 3 months $19 fee waived. :(

The Plan
$19 min a month (though using the code drops that to $0 min a month for the first 3 months only).
Free voice calls, video calls and text to Virgin mobile phones.
$50 a month to use towards other calls and text.
Included value expires after 2 months. So … you can have up to $100 value to use in a month ($50 from last month and $50 from this month, if you didn't use any of the value in the previous month)

Calls to other mobiles are expensive though. $0.90/min + $0.40 connection for voice and video with $0.25 per text.

This plan is good for me as most of my family and many of my friends are on Virgin and I'm probably a low call user (so that included $50 a month more than covers me).

1GB of data per month for the first 3 months only. Update here. You have to add an option to get the free 1GB per month for 3 months and then have to remember to remove it in time, otherwise you will end up on a data plan that might cost you $15 extra per month.

If you remove the 1GB per month data plan it drops to 5MB a month, according to Virgin's page.

Excess data is expensive. 0.2c per kB. So a 1MB page will cost you $2 on excess.

Though you can stay on the data plan and pay $15 extra per month, for 1GB of data.

As I only use internet at home (using my wireless broadband router :) ) I haven't had a need to work out if the data plans are competitive.

Network's traditionally been Optus, since Optus own Virgin Mobile.

Bargain?
The phone went back up to $29 a month, after the previous offer, last Nov/Dec. I thought it was worth mentioning as it's being offered again on a $19 a month plan.

If you're like me, low call user apart from calls to Virgin mobile users, this deal looks nice.

Also the phone might be unlocked … we were told that last time and if that interests you, you can check on that.

If you have an existing phone you are happy with but want that Virgin $19 a month plan, you may be able to improve your deal by selling the phone and keeping the sim.

Other thoughts
When I got the phone on the other deal it had limited accessories, unlike earlier packages. A slip case. A wrist strap with plectrum stylus. A stylus that slides into the case. A regular charger. A wired remote control into which a separate wired headset plugs (and it is also included) I haven't tested it, but it might be possible to plug the remote into the phone (without the extra wired headset), to allow radio play back, then use a bluetooth headset. Other phones I've seen don't allow radio playback via a bluetooth headset.

Nokia has it's own tv cable that you'll need to get if you want to output video and pictures straight to the tv. (Though video doesn't look that great on a tv)

You can get MS Office compatible software for this phone, but you'll have to pay for it and it's not from Microsoft. Works okay though it does not have all the power and shortcut keys from the desktop versions. I use mine just for writing and a bit of spreadsheet work. It can do more but I haven't tried that out.
The phone says it has document viewers for Microsoft documents, but on my phone, I'd have to go find and download them. Since I also want to edit documents, I just bought the editing version instead. It was around $20 Australian, give or take $10.

I don't know if the viewers will be already installed on the models sold under this deal.

I needed to upgrade my phone, from the previous deal, in order to get the new free navigation version of the GPS software. I'm not sure if you need a computer for this to work properly. I used Nokia's maps loader software on my notebook, with the phone connected, to upload data for Australia. You can see the size of data for different areas and different voices. I think Australia's data might've been something like 0.5 GB.

My phone seems to have a limit of about 40 applications. If you go over 40 applications, the phone can hang. I'm hoping Nokia release a patch to address this, even if it only warns me when the number of applications I have is getting close to that number. (The fix seems to be powering down, possibly by removing the battery even, removing the microSD card in my case, starting up again, then putting the card back into the phone … followed by removing a few apps)

Since the upgrade my phone has crashed a few times, in the 4 or 5 months I've had it. This tended to happen when I was using applications but I'm not sure if it's related to how many days the phone's been running since it last shut down.

That said, despite the few crashes, I still like this phone a lot :)

  • Well presented bargain & looks like a good deal.

    • Thank you :)

    • Be careful !!!!!!

The offer is not actually free 1GB for 3 months in $19 cap.
You have to apply for extra service then you have to pay extra after 3 months up to
what you select for. ($5, 10 or 15 per month)

      • Oh thanks :)

        I'll update the deal.

You have to sign up for an option and if you want, remove the option in time, at no further cost to you.

        http://www.virginmobile.com.au/surprisegig

1GB free data plan offer: 2) 1GB data plan costs $15 a month. For each of the first three months you’ll receive a $15 credit on your account. Before the offer ends you’ll be given the option to remove the data plan at no cost to you. If you don’t remove the data plan you’ll start getting charged $15 a month.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 5800 was offered for 19 cap, and the only thing that's different is that you now can get 1gb for 3 months (which you can get on the other phones too)

    • Oh, sorry, no. After Christmas it went back onto a $29 a month plan.

It's taken about 4 months I think, for them to make a new $19 a month offer, so I thought it was worth mentioning.

I'll add a section saying why it looks like a bargain to me.

Also just remembered, the phone was unlocked last time. If it's still unlocked, people looking at changing their Virgin mobile plan who have a phone they like, might be able to sell the phone and offset the cost of their phone calls.

The phone was valued at $468 or so last time, though I think Telechoice offer it for $390 or so.

  • $399 total plan cost and You get quite a lot: not a bad Nokia phone + free gps navigation + 3 months data + 24 months calling around + unlimited free Virgin calls. Seem a good deal indeed.

I think the cap allows you to make international call as well.

Some of the apps I've downloaded for free that seem nice or curious (note, these apps probably work on other Nokia and Symbian 60 3rd edition or later phones):

    Tools

    BrightLight
turns on the phone's LED flash to provide a very, very powerful torch. Will drain the battery quickly. I use it for just a few seconds or a minute here and there.

    Flashlight
will make the phone screen 1 colour (you get Red Green Blue sliders so you can pick the colour). Much softer but I can see very faint illumination for a metre or two. Battery will last a lot longer than BrightLight

    Banner
Simulation of a Scrolling LED sign. You can pick what will be written and select a colour. Hopefully we can later control the speed. Useful for getting the attention of your friend coming into a theatre or meeting them at night say outside a club.

    Eggtimer
Gives you up to 60 minute count down. A loud, single buzz at the end. You don't want to leave the room with this on and not realize it's gone off as it won't buzz repeatedly.

    Strobe
Uses the camera's LED flash as a strobe light. Not 100% sure who would use it … pathway marker at night time? Signalling a plane in case you are stranded? … not really sure

    Anglemeter
erm, uses the accelerometers to calculate the angle from the horizon. Line up the bottom of the phone with something and check the angle. Not too sure what that is for though.

    Level
Spirit level using the phone's accelerometers. I haven't compared it to a physical spirit level.

    Timer Lite
Simple timer, a bit like a stop watch. I think the lite version includes 1 lap time as well.

    Heart Rate Monitor
I find the easiest way to use this is, find my pulse, close my eyes, then tap on the phone with the stylus every time there's a beat. It then calculates your pulse from the tap frequency. No need to count at the same time or do the multiplication in your head. You can get the pulse in just a few taps too (or more for improved accuracy)

    Service Bell
so you don't have to look for it, when at an unattended desk

    Clicker
so you don't have to carry a separate click making device (for those who are training an animal with a clicker)

    Spin the Bottle
erm, so you can "randomly" pick a person, who happen to be sitting in a circle of people

    Coin Toss
if you don't want people to see your actually coin tossing skills :P

    Rotary Dial
for a more traditional dialling method

    Disco
… so you can have a disco ball wherever you go?

    Zippo
sometimes you want a virtual lighter … maybe for waving in the air at a concert?

Applications (I don't know how else to group this)

    Handwriting Calculator
You can free hand write down your equation. Even handles brackets and powers. Scribble out a number to erase it if the calculator misreads your handwriting. Not too bad on interpretation and feels nice.

    MobilePaint
Free basic paint program. Use the stylus and a palette to create and save basic pictures.
    Scribble
is another free and basic one.

    Converter
Nice conversion program. Area, lenght, weight, temperature, etc.

    ScreenSnap
can be used to take pictures of what's on screen, if you have this running in the background

    Notebook
I haven't played with this much. You can get different backgrounds (eg lined paper, graph, totals, music staves etc) and email (message?) the resultant jottings

    Phrasebook
Free version has a number of basic conversational lines in different languages

    Babelphone
Free version will play a number of phrases, recorded professionally, in Mandarin. (English menu) It will also write the phrases phoenetically and as Chinese characters. I hope they'll be releasing free versions of other languages too … or that Nokia will pay them to release free versions of others.

    Mr Lock
So you can override the default screen time out application, including saying that you don't want time outs for some applications or profiles

    Entertainment
    Platinum Sudoku
Mixture of Sudoku games presented erm … a little curiously for Sudoku.

    Pocket Shaker
Um … free version lets you have a Maracca or something. You can shake it and it makes a sound like sand in a shaker or something. Paid for version gives you other instruments

    Bubbles
Fairly relaxing entertainment. Just bubbles rising randomly through your screen. You can also tap to add more random bubbles.

    Minesweeper
    available for download

    Chessboard
for 2 people to play. No versus mode with the computer. (probably are in some of the paid chess boards)

    Solitaire
    the card game

    Tic Tac Toe
you can play vs the computer or another person. Large grid. 10x10 or something. First person to get 4 in a row

    Checkers
    vs computer only

    SoloNoble
traditional board game. Make marbles jump / eliminate each other till there's only one marble left.

    Reversi
    vs computer. 3 difficulty modes

    Pico Fireplace Lite
hook the phone up to the tv and you've got a virtual fireplace :)

    SuperMonkeyBall
mobile phone version of Sega's party pack game for the Wii. Tip and toss your monkey ball around the screen to get it to the target.

    CubeTouch
move coloured cubes to make 3 or more in a row, recharging your time out bar and increasing your score. The longer you keep matching them without a break between matches, the higher the score. Probably for those who like Tetris and such :)

There are heaps of other free and paid for applications. That's just a sample of what I've checked out.

I've provided this list, in case it might save other people time in the Ovi shop or in case people are looking at the phone and wondering what some of the free apps are.

Also in case other people have tried out other applications and want to add their thoughts here.

  • Beware!!! Virgin are extremely dodgy when it comes to applying "promised" credits a friend is in a dispute with them right now in regards to the previous similar offer they had on this phone for "3 free months" around November 09. Back then the deal was your 3 months were applied on your 4th, 5th and 6th bill.

They have NOT yet delivered the bill is now overdue (he budgeted for the free months and has now money to pay), calls to them yield nothing but "its with the manager because the person on the phone has no knowledge of this offer" and asks for proof on website. But of course the website has changed!!! SCAMMERS!!!

    • +3

      Oh … :(

Tell your friend to contact the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman. I think there's a free phone number for them, on their site on the web.

They'll write down what happened, then give you a reference number (important) and a special TIO response number to call at Virgin.

I've dealt with the TIO response person before and they've been great at sorting things out, when regular Virgin staff were stuffing me around.

All the best to your friend with this.

      • +1

Thanks for the advice will pass it on. After some investigation I found the previous offer posted here in Ozbargain http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/18889 hopefully he can use this as proof.

        • +1

Same thing happened to me. I had a virgin wireless broadband account with supposed 4th, 5th, 6th months free. They waived the 4th month but then kept billing me after that. Got the 5th & 6th credited only after multiple calls. Closed the account soon after.

Sony Ericsson Vivaz on Rollover Cap 29 is a good deal too.
Is this phone better than Samsung Jet?

    • Sorry, I'm a Nokia man myself :) Reusing Nokia accessories etc as I go from one phone to another and I like their phones :)

That said, I know one of my friends has a phone with a really beautiful camera :P and it's not a Nokia (but I can't remember what it is :) )

  • tl;dr

bad experience with virgin, terrible customer service

    enough said.

    • Regular customer service used to be so good. In the old days, if there was a mistake, they would refund me more than the amount I'd raised an issue with and be so helpful about it too.

Then a few years or so ago, it went downhill for regular customer service :(

On the plus side I've found their TIO response team to be great, fixing all sorts of problems for me :) (Note: some of the things I've contacted them about, I wouldn't expect most people to ring them up for)

So I'll give the TIO response team kudos :)

However, yeah, I do miss the old days where I didn't have to ring the TIO first to get any problems fixed.

      • Interesting, my recent experience has been a little different. I purchased the Nokia 5800 deal offered in December and had a few billing issues. Each time I called I was nicely surprised that a credit was offered without me having to get assertive. And there was a nice bonus when a promised $14 credit turned into $19 credit when I received my bill.

The second problem was that my telephone number port took 2-3 weeks (not the 5 days quoted max). Virgin claimed that the telco I was porting from had "technical problems", at which point I cringed thinking how futile it would be having to take the matter up with the other telco, but the Virgin Rep just credited my account for the period I had to wait. Nice.

Also, IMHO, the Nokia 5800 is a great little phone. My only problem with it is wrestling it from my girlfriend who plays the puzzle games a lot :)

        • oh! :P that's the service I used to get in the old days …

          :)

Time to get your girlfriend her own 5800? :)
Mine loves the handwriting input method on the phone … :)

  • Incidentally, my brother also uses the Nokia 5800 (almost a year now). He's generally happy with it.

Couple of issues though. He has mentioned GPS locking seems to take forever when (EDIT) network positioning is on. Also, bluetooth connection to the PC is extremely unreliable (despite the few firmware updates so far). He seems to think this is more an issue with the Ovi software rather than the phone itself. No problems synching via USB.

EDIT: If you get this phone, get the Peggle game. It's addictive and awesome.

    • You can get Peggle on your PC too :P I don't have it though :)

I found after the software upgrade, GPS positioning is much faster. Often 1-5 minutes for me, depending on weather. I'll have breakfast with the phone near the window and find it's okay, or when going out.

I do have A-GPS turned off though. That's to keep my internet usage to a minimum. (A-GPS means use access the Internet to get data to speed up and/or improve positioning).

I haven't played with Bluetooth connections to the PC using the phone. I only use the cable.

Has your brother done a full OS upgrade? Can he click on a song name and drag it up and down in the music player to move the entire menu or is he still having to use the side scroller only? (latter means he hasn't upgraded his software yet … and a warning, he should probably do a full backup and grab any licenses for his existing apps before upgrading just in case)

      • Will ask him the next time I see him on MSN. I'm sure he has the latest phone software/firmware. He's pretty up to date with these things and the Ovi suite usually notifies you of one when it becomes available.

I can tell you now that he doesn't have to worry about licenses as he gets his apps through "other" means.

        • Yes, I looked up the developer's site for the Office app, contacted them directly, got a generally available discount and had the license emailed to me too … :) :) :)

  • i am very interested in this phone/deal. but how's virgin's network? is it worse than 3 network(i am with 3 at the moment)?

    • I'm on virgin prepaid ATM. They use the Optus network and it's reliable. My Nokia 2730 is connected via 3g most of the time.

      • How can you be on Optus and be reliable - very dodgy in Melbourne CBD?

        • I'm in the suburbs. I haven't used the phone in the Melbourne CBD that much. I haven't noticed many network issues apart from:
          - supermarkets and the like can have a poor signal
          - inside some shopping centres some places have a poor signal
          - Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve I have problems sending and receiving messages … :P

What problems have you had with Optus in the CBD?

Hmm … I'm probably more of an off peak caller too.

        • I'm in QLD. No issues for me at least. Can't really comment on Melb.

        • he's in brisbane, probs less trafic there

  • "The Plan
$19 min a month (though using the code drops that to $0 min a month for the first 3 months only)."

Does that mean the first 3x$19/month is free? Or you don't need to buy any credit for the first three months but can't call?

    • +1

Normally you pay $19 a month and any excess charges. (So if you use more than your available call allowance or internet allowance it generates excess charges)

For the first 3 months you don't pay that $19.

So if you are calling people on the Virgin network and using less than $50 a month to contact non Virgin network numbers, and you stay inside your Internet allowance … then the first 3 months should be free :)

Warning: Your first 3 months will have 1GB allowance. Don't get too used to it :P The allowance will drop back to 5MB after that unless you contact them before hand and go on an Internet plan.

Remember to curb your internet usage before the first 3 months finish or to add a data plan before you get there, or you could be hit with a hefty Internet usage bill.

  • So this isn't the 5800 Music Express with Comes With Music? I suspect so considering it isn't mentioned anywhere.

    • The phone model seems to be called Music Express.

However the plan makes no mention of "Comes with Music" so I'd suspect this doesn't have the bonus music plan with it.

      • Bummer. My brother has the 5800 Music Express and he really likes it. I know its the same phone, but the Comes With Music feature would be awesome.

        • I think the Comes With Music package, has more or all the original accessories too.

So, longer data cable, a stand, tv out cable maybe.

If you are interested in that, I think Virgin do offer it, but I don't know any details and you'd need to check what accessories are included, with their sales team. :)

  • +1

    good writeup, foundit!

  • I agree with user foundit 100%, to get anything done that you don't trust customer service with due to their incompotence call the virgin relations department.

I haven't used this number since last year but it should still work: Removed by Mod

just say the tio told you to call and you don't have any info on hand at the moment. They should still help you.

Mod — a Virgin Mobile person contacted me to ask the number to be removed as it's an old number. Please call TIO first.

    • Virgin's TIO response team have asked me for my TIO number every time. They can still respond to my issue, they said, it's just that they need the TIO number to escalate and speed up the response time.

I think they said it could take 1-3 weeks to process without a TIO number, but 2-3 days if I could get them the TIO number.

I went for the 2-3 day option :)

  • Update 1GB of data free, per month, requires selection of an option.

You have to remove the option in time, at no extra cost, in order to avoid an extra $15 per month for staying on the 1GB per month data plan (or whatever the cost is).

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/24214#comment-185754

Remember to check the terms and conditions.

Sorry, I don't know the procedures for adding and removing the plan in time.

Fingers crossed it all goes right, otherwise, remember the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman can hopefully help you out too, like they've helped me in the past :)

  • … and here's the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman's online complaint form, complete with a 1800 number on it.

    http://www.tio.com.au/ComplaintForm/ComplaintFormS1.asp

It only takes minutes to fill out or to ring and get a TIO number :)

  • just bought

  • Just called Virgin and they said the 3 months free phone access (not 3 months free data access) is NOT available to existing members!
Couldn't see mention of this anywhere, as it was this that was the really enticing bit!

    • the three months free access is available until the 30th of april (must apply online)
the three months free 1gb of data is available until the 30th of june
and i thought by new customer they just mean a new sim card, with a new number….

    • Yeah, this was the case for the offer in December where the $100 gift card was only available to new customers. I rang and spoke to a Virgin Customer Rep manager back then. The best he could offer to an existing customer was to waive one month's payment (ie., $19). The implied message from Virgin is that the loyalty of long-term customers doesn't count for much. Disappointing and a little surprising given how relatively easy it is to churn to another telco.

If you really want the full offer and keep your existing mobile number, you can port your number away to a $2 SIM of another telco, and the back to Virgin as a new customer. But is it really worth the potential hassle?

      • +1

I think you've been given the run around … :S

I just re-read the page and it says, buy this phone online and we'll give you the first 3 months access for free.

The phone sales rep probably doesn't have access to the offer.

If you try online through the form, it'll probably let you through, no problems.

But be careful that you understand the different options. eg when do you need to cancel the data plan in order to avoid data plan fees (unless of course, you are happy to stay with the data plan) :)

The December offer definitely was a phone sales promotion. The sales person I rang didn't care that I was an existing member, even though I checked with him …

        • +1

I went through the online process and got to a point where it asks who you are (new, add phone, or upgrade phone). I went to upgrade phone and it says to call the upgrade hotline, who told me it is only available to new connections…!
I also had a really good look over the site and eventually found 'New connections only'…this should be stated more clearly on the promotion and not just in the fine print!
Yes, so much for awarding customer loyalty…my wife and I have been them not long after Virgin mobile first came here!

          • +1

            @blaast: Oh :(

            I've updated the deal.

Existing customers can get the deal ($19 vs $29), but only new customers can get the first 3 months of access fees waived :( Ah well :(

If you have someone else who lives there, and doesn't mind getting the phone provided it's your credit card being used … and you taking care of the phone and the paperwork …

  • Getting it delivered in a couple of days :)
    Thanks foundit!!

P.S. It does come with a 8GB MicroSD card and telesales are aware of the deal… few days left, until 06 May 2010.

    • :)

      You are welcome :)

      I just upgraded to 16GB, class 6. It's nice :)

(I have a lot of music on my phone, plus I want to have more than Australia in the GPS along with other files I'm working with etc … I ran out of space with 8GB :P … some people will be fine with it though)

  • I'm a virgin prepaid customer, do you think I'm still considered as an old member? :(

    • I just read through the terms … I don't know what the other people were told but I found a section where it says new "connections" only. Not new "customers" as other people were told … Which suggests that if they confirm you are eligible, then you should be eligible

Also that the deal is available through telesales.

So, you could ring up, confirm all the parts of the offer are available to you and if they confirm your eligibility for all the parts then apply.

Maybe point out that some people have told you they thought the deal was for new customers but you found that it was for new connections and get them to confirm you are eligible or ineligible for bonuses.

Good luck and note, I think the offer for "first 3 months access fee waived" is about to expire

Offer available until 7/06/2010 unless extended. Only one discount offer can be applied per service. New connections only.
