Just checked it out. Even with the discount Thrifty are still $50 more for the week on the Camry than Budget at Hobart Airport which I booked via Qantas. Picking up the car tomorrow and would have cancelled the Budget booking if this was a better deal. Might suit others though.

Thanks for confirming - I only booked Thrifty due to location convenience, I'm sure if that isn't an issue (i.e. at an airport), you are likely to get a good deal @ Budget, Red Spot, etc. Cheers

    • I think they tend to have newer model vehicle compare with others, may be less catches? I have few times experience with thrifty but not others and always been good. Will be using them again for my trip to tassie end of this month. I personally prefer newer model car then older model if price not too much different.

  • Deception as usual from Shifty Thrifty.
More like 6% off the total after Credit Card Fee, Vehicle Registration Recovery Fee, Premium Location Surcharge, Administration Fee .
And thats assuming you are not dumb enough to accept their hard sell on the $23-27/day excess-reduction scam.
Of course in that case, beware the $4000 + $2200 SVA damage charge - more than double that of Budget, and more than your own travel insurance will be willing to pay.

Want your wife to share the driving? Another $27.50 please (Budget and others, no charge.)

I'd rather walk than rent from thrifty. Not that others are perfect, but Thrifty seems to be the worst of the Majors. The Tiger Airways of Car rental.

    • Just stay away from Hertz and Europcar.

      • I mostly use Hertz, and will again this Friday, always being good. Haven't tried to charge me for car damage I didn't cause - http://www.businessinsider.com.au/the-acccs-hertz-case-shows…

        • I know someone who was. He was fuming.

        • @spy:

I can imagine, and I will take pics as always, just common sense.

        • @snuke: yeah he learnt that lesson.

    • Don't most advertise an all in fee it's just the breakdown at the end on the receipt that shows the associated costings? I've had a few different companies and they all have the same charges.

      • The advertised 10% discount only applies to one component, not all those others.

And any time you rent a car, you likely use a coupon code - they are advertised on the front page!
You can only choose one, so this code is only useful if its better than the other ones.

Anyone visiting Perth, I recommend Bayswater Hire Cars. Around $30/day, $500 excess, no upsell and no birds.
A short Uber ride from the domestic terminal. I just hope you like white Corollas :)

        • Those other components are generally applied as a % to the basic rental.

So if that is reduced then effectively everything else is reduced besides Vehicle Registration Recovery Fee on non add on rentals.

        • @wouldntyaliketoknow:

No, I tested it. Worked out to about 6% off the total. I still get a better deal from Budget with the "free upgrade" coupon.

Hertz always seems to be much more expensive than the others. Why is that?

    • I was looking at getting a Corolla at Coolangatta Airport (Gold Coast) from thrifty with the $33 Per day excess protection. That is no charge in case of an accident. I have never driven outside of Victoria so it looks like great value. Then again I have only had 1 accident in 10 years of driving. $223 for 2 days all up seams a bit much but I would hate to pay $4000 + $2200 for a seconds lapse in a new state and new driving conditions.

I don't have a credit card that gives me travel insurance. All I have is a NAB Visa Debit.

Thrifty are usually on the top end of the scale so 10% may bring them closer to the rest.Does it really save you 10% on the protection packs? Usually auto club members get lower excess and cheaper per day as well.

  • Make sure if you hire in Melbourne you stay the f*** away from Montague Street… :P

I got 50% with thrifty booking through a third party website. Don't get sucked into these inflated prices.

    • What website?

With a little creativity you can tell which rental company it is. Just paid $300 for a thrifty car interstate where the thrifty website price was over 700

        • How can you tell which company?

        • @gimme: The Website looks shady. I am not sure as to the charges that I will have to pay in case of an accident.

          @El Grande:

Yeah never mind. I've booked through that website over a dozen times. The insurance excesses (or excess protection fees if you don't want an excess) are clearly laid out. In almost all cases in Aus I got either thrifty or avis for a fraction of what they charge directly. I also used them in the US with no issues. You will know who it is as soon as you make the booking. If you don't like the provider you can cancel straight away for free (read T&Cs). Never had an issue. Each to their own.

        • @gimme:

Thanks for the tip @gimme. This saved me a fortune on a hire car.

    • yea, l wanna know too. Needing to hire a car soon and would love to get 50% off.

What third party website was that? Thanks

lol did you read what I wrote above??

  • Any suggestion for best car hire place in Brisbane?

    • Not Hertz. Not Europcar.

  • "Where a Single Vehicle Accident Fee of $2,200 is applicable from non-metro locations, it also reduces to $0."

Does this mean that is I rent from a Metro location this fee will still be applicable?

  • Code not working. Gives error code not valid for this date range. It was working yesterday when I checked prices.

I tried 10 May to 12 May as well as 10 June to 12 June.
