Vodafone Smart First 3G Mobile Phone $69 ($34.50 after Half Price Coupon + Bonus $34.50 Woolworths Dollars) @ Woolworths

2810

OK, firstly forget the $69. No one will pay $69 for this phone.

This phone is advertised in the current catalogue on page 25. When you purchase this phone you will receive $34.50 Woolworths Dollars (You will need a Woolworths Rewards Card)

Even at $34.50 the phone is still not worth it. But if you have kept your Woolworths receipts from the last week or two, you may have one of these half price coupons. The half price coupons are unique and will only work once.

This is now the good part. Present your half price coupon which brings the phone down to $34.50 (less if you pay with discounted wish cards). Scan your Woolworths rewards card and you will have earned yourself $34.50 Woolworths Dollars, effectively making the phone FREE.

Now you can walk away and be content that you have effectively scored yourself a free phone. Or, if you are a true ozbargainer, you will probably notice your new receipt has yet another unique half price coupon

So, you go back for round two. Same procedure as above. Present coupon. Phone comes down to $34.50. But this time when you scan your rewards card you will automatically redeem $30 Woolworths Dollars (this will be shown on the receipt as MEMBER REWARDS 3 @ 10.00). This will leave an amount of $4.50 that you must pay out of pocket, however, you will have earned yourself another $34.50 Woolworths Dollars.

So, after 2 transactions you have yourself 2 brand new phones, $39 Woolworths Dollars, 2 petrol dockets and yet another half price coupon. And so it goes on and on, though it does say limit of 2 per customer in the T&Cs, but I'd say that is referring to the maximum number of handsets they would sell you at one time.

This phone can be unlocked for $1.45 on ebay. Many thanks to abacusjk for posting the link and to other members for confirming it worked.

The OP indicates that after “2 transactions you have yourself 2 brand new phones, $39 Woolworths Dollars, 2 petrol dockets…” but does not mention that you also have $39 debt on your card. (Credit/debt/EFPOS).

I.e. you net value is a $0 phone irrespective of how many time you buy it.

So unless you need the second free phone there is no point going back for the seemingly ‘extra’ Woolworths Dollars.

    • +3

extra charger…… spare battery for the first phone. The list goes on.

Its free? Are you sure you're a ozbarginer

    How does this work though?

Sorry first time doing this :p

    • +4

It's a mobile phone, ask a friend. They are pretty easy to use.

      • I meant the code thing :P. But thanks hehe

        • +1

you scan it, gives you the phone at half price…..

  • I have a spare code, drop me a pm if interested

  • Hi,
Would appreciate if someone has a code to spare. Please PM me.
    Thanks

  • Can someone with spare code pm me please?

    Thanks

  • Would anyone be kind enough to send me a code?

  • Can I please have a code PM'd as well, Thanks

  • +1

got a spare code for first person to pm me
    edit: gone

  • How can you guys use the code?!? Do cashier enter it manually for you? Usually they will ask for the physical original voucher.

    • I'm wondering the same thing…
I've asked them and they said I can't use the cash earn for the member card in the same transaction

      • What are you talking about? I am talking about the 50% off code. Regarding your question, read the OP, you have to check out separately if you buy 2+. The 1st transaction will generate the Woolworths Dollar which will automatically offset on your 2nd transactions and so on…

    • +3

I know what you meant. I didn't know how it worked too until I did it.

Don't walk into the woolsworths, go straight to the counter where people buy ciggies and do returns etc.

Ask them for the phone and assuming they have one, you just buy it right there.

1)They will scan the phone it will shop up at full price
      2) give person the 50% coupon which people have been passing around in this thread. Once scanned, the price will be halved.
      3) scan your EDR card.
      4) pay the $34.50 with whatever method you want
      5) when you get the receipt (near the bottom, above the usual coupons section), check that the " Woolworths dollars from this shop" is recorded as $34.5
      6) next time you go Woolworths and use your EDR card, you will get $34.5 deducted from the amount payable in increments of $10.

      Hope this helps.

      • thanks SeVen11, this mini-guide helped heaps! :)

    Took some work
    Walked to local
Don't get in…. They said other store does not get either.
They rang another store…. No answer.
Finally rang another store and 1 left on hold.
Drive 10kms and picked it up!
None left in that store now.
Updating system now via WiFi…. Had to check instructions to get back off…..
So where are the FREE unlocking keys please?

Going to use as chromecast controller!

    • Hahah i had to google how to get the back off too!

  • looks good on paper, but I'm so thrilled with 4G working in my area im worried that just handling these might taint my network speed. Its not superstition, its risk management.

  • Thanks OP, got one

    • Did you get another code on the docket, if you not looking to buy one more, it will be great if you can share the code docket over PM, cheers

  • Anyone got a code to share, would appreciate if you can send me a code or even better the bottom of the docket with the barcode that I can show at woolies, thx in advance.

    • +1

Instead of begging barcodes here, just get out and grab one on the ground or in the bin easily.

Any receipt that has $30 plus purchase should have one one on it.

      • Sorry I had a $32 purchase this week and did not get this offer unfortunately

  • +1

If your local store does not have stock,it is still wise to keep the barcodes as they are valid till the end of March.

I think Woolies might run another similar deal, next time maybe Alcatel Onetouch 2052 or Pocket WiFi Modem.

  • Unfortunately not available in WA. However bad the phone might me, still not bad for kids

    • Bentley store WA had 2 (now 1) & its in the catalogue

Not to worry in true ozbargain fashion I walked around the check outs and found a receipt on the floor with a barcode lol… Used it and got another so brought 2.

  • I bought one of these last time for I think ~$10 or $20. Loaded up Nokia Maps for free offline GPS navigation. Sits in the glovebox if I ever need it.
But now I have another two more… what to do with them? hrmmm…

  • Just got one, plus 5 extra WWD. Another 2 accounts have this, so looks like I might end up with 6 phones plus some WW dollars.

    • Cool where in Melbourne do you have still stock left ?

      • The store I went to, I think only had one left.

        • my local store had one left too

  • +4

Need a barcode for half price phone deal…

Its easy - in Woolies Carpark there were so many receipts on the ground & probably more in the bins - so just pick one up. You only need 1.

My receipt was too crumpled for scanning, so barcode was entered manually.

Finding a store with stock even at 9am today was much harder.

  • +4

Are you guys sure the codes are single use only?
These long codes usually just have your store's 4 digit code, POS terminal number, receipt number, date, time, etc coded in them along with a little bit that says what the barcode is really for.
Fuel vouchers actually code 0404 for 4cpl off petrol/lpg and can be modified to scan (though may not be accepted by the cashier) an "enhanced" discount.

From codes posted in the thread so far you can see how non-unique the codes are:
    9849 26440179208 0004823103201600000 0836
    9849 43300044862 0004823103201600000 2586
    9849 43300868170 0004823103201600000 3240
    9849 43300837778 0004823103201600000 3572
    9849 12750090755 0004823103201600000 0662
    9849 12750141504 0004823103201600000 0166

    • I take the first barcode as example
      Generic Code 9849
      Store Code 2644
      POS Code 017
      Transaction Code 9208
      Generic Code 000482
      Offer Expiry date 31032016
The last 4 digits are unique

    • haha modify the code for $1/ltr off :)
Well you should be able to get the 10c off pretty easily then

      • Maybe you can extend the expiry date as well…

    • these were the two codes I got from Woolworths Ashgrove
      9849 26440179206 0004823103201600000 0834
      9849 26440179208 0004823103201600000 0836

    • Code is single use. They didn't scan my EDR card the first time and I had to do the transaction again. They were not able to reuse the code.

  • I don't have a Woolworth rewards card. Can I join just now and then claim the Woolworth money right away? Or do I need to wait to receive the actual card before I can use this deal?

    • I think they give you a temporary card that you can print out and use immediately

    • Grab one from the store and you can use it right away.To redeem the dollars on it,you must register your account with the card number.Or you do online registration first to be safe.

Can someone please tell me how to open the bloody thing to put the battery on? :)

      • What has that got to do with that comment?

  • checked, no stock at Westfield, Hurstville NSW :(

    • Hurstville Woolies doesn't sell any sort of phones, odd considering they converted Myer's into Woolies with their great big new store and no mobile phones (they had mobiles at the old Food 4 Less/ex Franklins store)

        Wasted fuel ><

Guy from blacktown told me some dude bought 4.

  • +5

was gonna jump on this deal, dusted off my EDR card and found some vouchers
but as I got to the store, common sense prevailed and decided I didnt really need the phones (ive got enough already lol!)

Better off leaving it for someone else who needs it

  • What would happen if you were to return and swap for a different phone? Giving $34.50 in Woolies credit for the phone you really want?

    • I was thinking the same thing.

    • +2

I purchased 2 phones in separate transactions then refunded the first phone. Since the original Woolworths Money was used to pay for the second phone, it could not be deducted from my WM balance during the refund.
Woolworths literally paid me to take a phone from them.

      • You got lucky. Woolies policy is that they don't refund phones

        • +1

Must have been, girl was getting over the shock of a $4.50 phone so must have thought I was a wizard or something.

        • +4

For those who want to return the phone.
          Heres the key.
Grab a catalogue which says phone has 3mp camera but the phone is actually a 2mp camera.
You can easily return the phone for this false advertising.

        • @jjj123: Hmmm. Do Woolies sell the Buzz? Or maybe fit

      • Or just leave the reward card home when you swap it?

  • Thank you very much OP for your very clear explanation of the entire process. This is great as a simple second phone. I have a WW Rewards Card but avoid using it because I prefer to get a printed fuel voucher. When the fuel discount is on the Rewards card I cannot remember whether I have any fuel offers left or when they expire.

    • +2

You can download Woolworths fuel app and link your rewards card. It will show the vouchers in your card with their expiry. You may be loosing the woolies dollars for not scanning your edr card.

    • You can also just log in to your Woolworths Rewards account and check.

  • Anyone have spare code please?

  • Can someone with spare code PM thanks

  • Any spare codes ?? Please pm me. Thanx :)

  • So I have had a night with this phone on WIFI only.
    Speaker seems loud enough.
Battery with screen on and low brightness seems to run down quickly.
    Youtube works well.
WIFI drops and reboots, clear memory, turn on and off wifi, use browser or chrome is hit and miss…..
I have had it successfully chromecasting and wifi webpages no probs and then it will give the "reload" screen and not work for hours???????
Screen blurs when you press it and the keyboard really sux!

Now my Galaxy Nexus on home wifi(at the same time) has had none of the above issues and its a 2011 phone!

    • +2

You're critical of an effectively free phone? Comparing it to a Galaxy Nexus - what was it's RRP in 2011??

It's designed as a "First" Android phone at an entry level (full) price, with basic features like poor screen (233PPI WQHD 480×800 resolution, "Viewing angles are the worst aspect") & little memory.

Android 4.2.2 "Android KitKat. The reason for this seems to be that as the Smart first 6 is aimed at users buying their first smartphone (hence the name) KitKat appears a better option for Android newbies as it is just a little bit simpler than Lollipop."

The review of this phone says battery life is its best feature
"Battery life, though, is surprisingly good, with a 9 hour time in the Geekbench 3 battery test proving the best time I have seen. It should last a day and a half comfortably in real-world terms."

Review is critical of performance when multiple apps are in use.
"Performance of the First 6 is hindered by the lack of RAM, with 512MB proving too little in 2015. This is because, when too many apps are open in the background, phone performance simply grinds to a halt. However, if memory is frequently freed up, performance is not bad. It is just crucial to know what the operating constraints of the First 6 are, else it could to be difficult to get on with."

Also don't forget to take the plastic off the camera lens (remove back). Even then it's not a good camera. But the price is right.

      • +1

Yeah I read all the reviews and got it for free!
And I know the low ram and storage issues and 1GHz dual processor but I did expect 2015 "basic" phone to be better or match my 2011 model….
I did think about the plastic on camera and was just about to remove as I watch the youtube tech videos and have seen them remove it before!
I'm just giving Australian first hand usage experience for those that get this phone and expect Nexus 6P performance and features!

        • It reminds me of the issues with earlier cheap Android phones - that were popular with Ozbargainer like the $25 Huawei model with similar memory restrictions. They were slow, few apps could be installed - hard to believe I used those now. But I've never been 'spoiled' by phones costing more than $80 ;-)

Ran mine last night tethered to a cheap Android. Not that impressed compared with other cheap (4G) Android deals like the $40 Huawei Y550 (with $50 Vodafone pack) or my current $53 Telstra Buzz (with Monster headphone, $10 SIM & 5GB data). But this one is just OK for effectively free.

Keyboard on basic phones is improved by downloading one of the good keyboard apps (often free here).

My opinion was similar to that of the review - don't expect much & imagine you've never used an Android phone before (otherwise you will be disappointed).

I'm sure those struggling to find just 1 phone left in stores will be so happy for you :-(
