Chiko Rolls (Box of 4) $2.60 - Less than Half Price @ Woolworths (save $2.79)

500

For all those that love a good Chiko roll, went shopping at Woolies last night and found in their "specials" freezer boxes of Chiko Rolls for $2.60 - less than half price!

Can't recall the last time Chiko rolls were on sale (I look at both Coles & Woolies reguarly, but can't recall seeing them ever on sale), so for less than half price is an absolute bargain :)

Thanks Australia Day - you're now good for three things … a public holiday, a good game of cricket, and a reason for Chiko rolls to be on sale :p

This is mentioned in https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/231048 and https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/230811, where all the supermarket deals are listed, but I reckon this deal is worthy of being mentioned seperately.

Not a dupe - "If you are posting an individual product but there is already a deal listing all the weekly specials, then you may post the individual item as long as the item is not mentioned in the title. Please see the thread about supermarket items for more information."

    • Did you not read the OP…

  • +2

Coles had both Chiko Rolls and Marathon Spring Rolls for half price…

    • +7

      Coles spelt backwards is seloC

    • +2

Yeah, I noticed Coles have them half price at the moment too, but for 7c more… not a bargain! ;)
      I was hoping I'd get a jv post … now I'm happy :) Hahaha.

      • +5

        but for 7c more… not a bargain

Driving to Woolies costs me an extra 12c compared to driving to Coles.

    • +1

Thanks JV - I personally prefer the Marathon spring rolls over Chiko
Seems to me Chiko is not as good as it used to be…

      • +1

… not as good as it used to be

        No, that's just Dementia.

  • how would you cook them at home? Pan (shallow) fry or oven?

    • +1

      Oven I guess?

      • healthier sure, but crispier?

      • Oven I guess?

Instructions on the box don't mention oven, only deep or shallow frying.

Marathon springs rolls can be cooked in the oven or fried…

        • +4

Do you have shares in Marathon Spring Rolls jv?

        • -1

          @Jamiea:

No, but they taste similar to Chiko rolls and are cheaper…

I bought some this week… Was going to buy Chiko rolls but read on the pack that they can only be fried.

      • +3

we do them in oven, they are fine.
yep, chips and a chiko at home……

      • What temp and how long?

        • +1

200C for 15 mins (need to be thawed first)

    • +1

Air-fry would be best, you don't even need to add any extra oil.

      • +1

Best to defrost them beforehand. :)

        • Yeah and brush then with some oil or something otherwise the 'skin' gets a bit dry.

    • +1

I stick them in the air fryer for 15 minutes at 200oC - come out fine! Have also deep dried them in the past, before I got the air fryer though.

    • mixer with fruit and drink it

    • +1

      Microwave

    • Store in the freezer..defrost in the nukebox..5 min in the air fryer.👍

  • Classic 1970's food.

Used to love the Chiko girls in their sexy outfits.

Pity they no longer make Space Food Sticks for the Australian market…

  • +1

    Fatty roll.

  • +2

But why do it to yourself?

  • taste terrible

    • +1

does it just taste like it's shitty/cheap quality?

I've never ever had one of these before… I always imagined they would taste like a chicken and corn roll?

      • Taste pretty good.

You would be forgiven for thinking that a Chiko roll would be made of chicken… but no. Beef!

        • +2

Chicken ? at most Chicken powder, cut thru the whole roll only see vegetables and glue-like paste.

      • I always imagined they would taste like a chicken and corn roll?

LOL WOT? They taste nothing like chicken or corn.

They are primarily cabbage. But it's the flavour that is imparted by deep frying in whatever oil is in that shop that gives them the most appeal. So, they taste different at a fish and chips shop than they taste cooked at home in clean oil.

        • +1

That's why my oil at home isnt clean

        • Honestly,I never looked up the ingredients and it kinda looks like a chicken and corn roll… And it's called "chicko".

  • +1

yep, stocked up on Wednesday. always do when half price.

  • Agree that it's not the healthiest but handy to have when on the go or want something warm in a hurry.

Ive baked them in the oven before - they tend to burst (normally on one end) and the outer part gets a little chewy if not left in the oven long enough to crisp.

    • +1

Spray oil on top first helps to crisp better, just lightly.

  • Apparently you can microwave these

  • Is it a long way to shop at your local Woolies mrdevil?

still have a box in the deep freeze from last year….my advice dont buy more than one box. you have a couple and that takes care of the nostalgia factor
….bonus is they come with the chiko bags so you can keep your hands grease free whilst indulging…if that matters to you :P

    how i prepped em:

deep fried for 10-12 minutes (just like at the fish&chippy) make sure they dont get a chance to explode in the deep fryer or it can get messy in there!!!! leave them stand for a few mins (they will be thermonuclear HOT) on a paper towel to absorb all that grease you know you really shouldnt eat, munch down with soy or not whatever your preference….tom sauce is only allowed for the hardcore bogan eater

eat with a beer (none of that craft-sh&t)….revel in how australian you feel. :D

  • I LOVE a Chicko Roll but have to limit myself to only 3-4 per year otherwise I'd be too fat to type ;) Always interested me what they contained to get that flavour though as I thought there was a slight 'curry' presence to the cabbagey goodness inside but alas thanks to a link from JV above there's no curry in them at all:

"Wheat flour, cabbage, water, cooked barley, carrot, beef, animal fat, wheat cereal, celery, onion, green beans, textured soy protein, salt, sugar, acidity regulator (450, sodium bicarbonate), hydrolysed vegetable protein, spices, emulsifier (471), colours (102, 110), flavour enhancer (635), antioxidant (320). No artificial flavours or preservatives."

Wouldn't mind trying to cook up a batch myself but I'd imagine the outer pastry stuff would be difficult to get right. Easier to just buy them at half price ;)

never tried it before but i saw this recipe posted on wp ages ago….looks really easy and good
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfW9VLlMtOg

im with you 3-4 in a year is plenty…also cornjacks anyone? :D

    • +1

Cumin has a very curry flavour and JV's post has "spices" as one of the ingredeients so that may be it.

    • Surprisingly, the ingredients don't look that bad. Relatively.

Still got MSG's stepchild (635), and the colours can not be healthy, but overall, nothing too crazy…

      • … until it's deep fried ;)

Would be interested to taste one done in an air fryer though. Been contemplating one of those for a while now but know that it'll still lead to unhealthy eating at home. I personally can't see the point in that because it's so easy to do when eating out ;)

Seeing the OPs post would make Bargearse cry a little (the older ones here will know who I'm referring to).

    • Hey charger.

    • +2

      Bahahahaha!! Awww… memories… :) Care for a dutch oven?

      https://youtu.be/ZNpvIMVJkeE?t=118 (beware - toilet humour)

      • Now that's 'Champagne Comedy'!

      • Special Bargearse sound effects by The Trouser Trumpeteers. I miss the D-Gen. Scatological, yes, but also very intelligent comedy.

  • I had one of these at the fish and chip shop after years and years, for nostalgia's sake.

It was nothing like I remember, kind of bland and missing some flavour. I don't know if they've changed formula but beware, it might not be quite what you remember.

    • They may not have cooked it long enough. The few times I have one each year I specifically ask them to overcook it so the ends are nearly burnt. That seems to caramelise the ends and possibly the outer and changes the flavour a lot. For some reason the ones that have been sitting in a bain-marie/warmer counter all day also share this quality… like an aged wine ;)

      • heh I theorised out loud that it might have been because it was fresh and hadn't been sitting in the pie warmer all day, maybe I was on to something :P

  • +1

I remember eating these as a kid…. tried one when I was an adult, it was pretty terrible. Haven't been tempted since 15 years later.

  • My Woolies has been completely cleaned out of Chiko Rolls…!!

    • fitting seeing as its australia day weekend! :D
up next: a national thong shortage…

  • +1

Turn the lights out and watch these suckers glow!

  • Never liked these things. Although I do remember the ads … sexy 80's bikini babes lying on motorcycles :D

  • Just got 4 packets of these as I thought it was the one with the sausage thing inside. My god, how does anyone eat these..

  • Do they still put dog meat in these or have they switched to the cheaper vermin

    • +1

No meat^ in these. Maybe a snail if it was on the cabbage.

^ Well, yes, there is meat. But so miniscule that if you put it in the Large Hadron Collider, you might find evidence of the Higgs boson.
