  • Positive for the OP, but I reckon this is still too expensive. For the same money one can get a Meike MK320P for on camera TTL plus two or three yongnuos for firepower. Then there's the smaller and simpler Nissin i40 that is often closer to $200.

    • Some people might prefer the backlit LCD of the FL600 or sun's readability of the i40… Each to their own…

Different lighting performance at different zoom levels.

Can't comment on the MK320P… But interesting comparison.

      • The majority would want this for sure. I'd even have a go at low 200.. my inner cheapskate is stomping already.. :)

        • Come oooon… Just a little bit more!

  • +1

yongnuos are so cheap and so good that I wouldn't buy any other flash.

    • Which Yongnuos flash is compatible with Olympus OMD cameras?

      • If you're after Yong Nuo, just search for M4/3 and you will find a couple that are made with the M4/3 pins…

Just mind the Guide Number though… Nissin i40 is quite bright but I've seen some Yong Nuo and Cactus with low Guide Numbers…

        • I don't think Yongnuo makes a flash for M43.

Hot-shoes flash are all compatible no matter it's on Sony/Canon/Nikon or Oly, just each brand has their own pins to support more funtions like TTL. Any hot-shoe flash including Yongnuo should work on OMD, but only as a manual flash without the TTL support.

I have a Yongnuo on my EM-5 and it works just fine, but it is annoying since you have to ajust it all the time. It takes some trial and error to find the right flash setting sometime, it's fine when you are shotting still object, but when you're taking portrait…

        • @QuarkfiS:

Ah, sorry, I was looking at the Yong Nuo and Cactus at the same time… At that price range, the Cactus is pretty good with TTL and compatibility with RC (pre-flash) control albeit not too bright…

        • @QuarkfiS: Ah thanks QuarkfiS. If Yongnuo only works in manual mode in the OMD, then it is useless for me.

      • Every YN is compatible. Just make sure you get the Nikon version for easy pins insertion.

But, I strongly recommend on getting a TTL unit for on camera (single flash) such as this Olympus, Nissin i40 ~260 from Gerry gibbs, or the Meike MK-320P (~$90). Oh and the Panasonic FL360L too. It's the same as this Oly, rebranded, from what I read.

For manual off camera multi flash setup get either a YN560 IV or 560TX and a couple of 560 IIIs. No TTL, Manual only.

    • What Yongnuo TTL flash is cheaper than this?

      • None. There are no YN TTL for m43. But Canikon YNs TTL are $150 tops.

        • So then spending $289.91 is still cheaper than wasting $150 on something that isn't even compatible with your camera.

        • -1

          @Orpheus:

Depends on what compatible means. Some want easy, some want precise. Some in between and as cheap as possible like me.

        • @doorknob: Unless you can compare a TTL flash, you're comparing apples to oranges. And of course a third party manual flash is going to be cheaper. So is using a $1 torch as a flash.

        • @Orpheus:

Me and the OP have compared fruits earlier on above.

        • @Orpheus:

          Either points would be valid,

You should probably asked yourself what you want in a flash:

Cactus AF50, cheap, TTL, but not bright enough <— I have this, a bit too weak under high ceiling situation for bounce flash

Olympus FL600R, bright, TTL, bad for viewing under the sun, but a bit expensive ~ Panasonic DMW-FL360L

Nissin i40, bright, TTL, cheaper than Oly, nice manual control (better under the sun), but do your own research for compatibility across M43 especially in regards to Wireless RC mode

Yong Nuo, bright (if you pay over $100), cheap, but no TTL

  • Nice to see that Ted has actually restocked, especially as so much tends to magically 'disappear' during previous sale times. There was one in stock at the start of the sale that soon got snapped up.

If this flash was $289 with 20% yet to come off; whoooa - that would be nice. Being able to control flash power from the camera when doing off camera work is very appealing but it's still a lot of $$ for what these flashes contain. Still, when compared to the dedicated Canikon offerings, it's price is reasonable?
