I am using these now. Excellent pair of headphones, but there are a few trade-offs and it's closed back.

    A good review: http://www.soundguys.com/audio-technica-ath-m50x-592/

    The discount is $30 off.

  • +1

Best headphones I own even better than ones that cost twice that

    • +2

Yep owned two pairs, first was stolen with other stuff from my car. Love them, the closed backs means blocking people out at work to help me concentrate too.

  • +1

mmm the shure 840 for 188 seems like a good deal too…..

    • I would personally go with the Shure from my experience with Shure 440, but in saying that, I recently moved to open headphones and the difference is amazing.

      • Huh, what open headphone did you get? :) Just curious.

I really want to try their Fidelio range (X1, X2 L1, L2) and you just reminded me to put a Camecamelcamel alert for those items :P I think they were sold pretty cheap when they were refreshing their range last year.

        • @CheapCoffee: Those series were cheaper in Korea compared to Australia, last time I've checked. That might be an option for you if you want to grab them (I am not too sure about now though).

        • @Oversimplified: Will have a look :) Thanks!

        • @CheapCoffee: I think there are few places you can give those a go. Schezade is one of the places that I've heard many praises on. I'd also recommend you to give some of the Koss products a go like KSC-35 or 75, if they have them available for listening (I like KOSS brand, you could easily ignore this as a "fanboy's recommendation").

Now I think about it, I might visit them at one point this year or next year. I might pick some "audiophile" crap while in Korea as well (coz they are cheaper).

  • +3

Given the lousy aussie dollar, this is a pretty damn fine price. Thanks OP.

  • I've wanted a pair of M50x for a long long time and this price is so very tempting but I really wanted the Blue/brown coloured ones. It's a shame because they were all over the internet during the start of the year for the normal price between $189 and $220 but now I can't seem to find a single one at a decent price. The only ones that are on eBay are from the US and cost over $400.

The green ones on store DJ: https://www.storedj.com.au/products/AUD-ATHM50XDG don't seem to be on sale, or the white ones :(

I wish I wasn't so picky about the colours as I would buy this in an instant! This is a fantastic deal, thanks OP!

      • Yep they're available for $189 on store DJ as well on the link that I posted above. The green ones look nice and it might just be me but I don't think there's much difference in appearance between the black and green one when you look at it from a distance or when it is dark. It has a different colour padding and a gold engraving instead of the white on the black one, but apart from that the 2 colours really don't distinguish that much from each other to warrant an extra $30 IMO. But of course it depends on personal taste as well.

The blue/brown one was a thing of beauty. M50x have a premium sound at a very nice low price but the blue/brown one also had a really premium look as well. It's a shame they've suddenly disappeared.

Edit: woops nvm, you changed the link ;). Yes those are the ones! Damn, now I have to weigh up my options and justify paying an extra $100 just for a different colour haha :P

        • @shapers:

No worries. Yep those are the ones I wanted! Thanks for the link!

If I had found that before seeing this deal, I'd buy it without thinking twice. But now that I've seen this deal for the black one, I'm having a hard time justifying paying an extra $100 for it :P.

Sometimes it's best to stay away from OzBargain :(

Time to think over which one to go for..

        • @shapers:

          Oooh. Any chance at $200?

        • @Isho: Hahaha fair enough! i know what its like!!!
Hm might be a bit low, ill see what they say though and let you know :)

        • +1

          @shapers:

          Awesome thank you!

I just placed an order for the black ones as stock seems to be depleting fast as the minutes go by. If $200 is possible for the blue ones I'll contact Store DJ to cancel my order.

        • @Isho: Hey, just got back, unfortunately cant be done because they're now limited edition :( sorry about that!

        • The green and black one definitely look similar. I noticed a guy on the train had the green ones and I could not tell the difference till I got pretty close. It's the gold band that makes it easier to see.

        • +1

          @shapers:

No worries mate, thanks for checking :)

I had a feeling it wouldn't be possible as they are pretty hard to get at the moment!

    • +2

You cant see them when they are on your head. Gimmicks like colour and such dont last long.

      • +4

Yeah that's true but it's kind of like wanting a car in a particular colour isn't it? You won't see it when you're using it, but you still want it to look good when you look at it and when others look at it.

When you look at a pair of black headphones, they all pretty much look the same. The blue/brown ones are pretty unique, distinguishable and look really good. But at a $100 extra cost… I'm not too sure!

        • LOL, me and a friend both have the blue/brown ones and I have to say they look good. The only thing I would change is that there is no inbuilt mic although you can get pretty good add-on ones like the zalman http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

They are very good, and I would probably buy another pair if this one was destroyed by children. I should also say they've taken a beating and don't seem to show it at all.

    • I've seen them out and about and initially wanted them at release - they don't look that good in person. Just my opinion.

Go the plain old blacks ;)

    • I work for another carrier of AT products and I can confirm the Blue/Brown M50'x are discontinued and have been replaced by the new green model.

  • Didn't wake up today thinking that I would pay that much for a headphone… trust me when I say that I have never gone that far for this type of hardware. anyway, that is the problem with following this site. Thanks OP!

    • +4

Trust me, this money is well spent, your ears will thank you for the purchase!
      Enjoy your music :)

      • Will these enhance bad audio sources or make them sound worst.

        • +2

I guess even the most expensive headphone can't do magic with bad source :)

  • would get if i could pick up at sydney.

Don't want delivery to hide the fact I'd pay so much for headphones.

  • Had the ath m50 version and got rid of it. Sound quality is acceptable but the comfort level is terrible. Comfort is the most important factor to consider with headphones, dont ignore this fact. Theres a reason why bose is so popular, they have the most comfortable headphones.

    • What was uncomfortable? Are they too heavy? I have some Sony Pulse Elites which are pretty good for gaming but cane the top of my head, so I hardly wear them unless I'm told to haha.

      • +1

They have a strong clamping force, i guess its needed to hear the low frequencies as this headohone is someowhat lacking in bass. Theres lots posts on forums talking about how uncomfortable this headphone is…

        • Huh???

This model of headphones is very popular due to the amount of bass in it. I would have thought it is more recognised to be more muddied in the midrange.

I have one and still have it. Also have Sony XB-3 for comparison.

          Cheers.

Re comfort - can't compare to other headphones as I don't have any others for long term use, but for stints of 1-2 hours it's fine. Maybe can get a bit hot as it is closed.

        • Thanks I really hate the strong clamping force like on one of the Sennheisers, it was good but couldn't comfortably watch/listen to anything longer than 1 hour which was frustrating..

        • I stretched the headband of mine to reduce the clamping force.

I was quite disappointed when I plugged it into my phone. It really only sounds good if your source is capable of driving them well. They sound fantastic when hooked up to a decent DAC and/or headphone amp.

        • @eug:

Yep, mine is hooked up to a Fiio E11 amp connected to the line out from my Ipod Classic. The sound of high quality files is pretty darn good (I listen mainly to Electronica/Lounge/Popular).

Sound of the M50 plugged straight into the IPod classic alone is a bit dull without the amp. Same with an older Creative M vision 60B.

    • bose comfortable? Have you had a pair of beyerdynamics on your head? beats are one of the most uncomfortable full sized cans out… why are they so popular?

Bose is popular because they actually make the best consumer ANC cans on the market.

      • I have tried on the bose anc and they were very comfortable. I have heard good things about the beyers

        • The most comfortable headphone I've tried so far is the Audio Technica ATH-AD2000X
They are so light and don't clamp at all, and the sound is outstanding!
The only thing to hold me back to get a pair is the price :(

        • +1

own a pair of beyer T1s and probably only the HD800s are the only competition with regards to comfort. I find these closed headphones are only comfortable for up to an hour before things get toasty in the ear. Hard clamping is usually easy to fix with a bit of stretching on the band, but I find it hard to believe that people consider these to be lacking in bass… these have quite a bit of it, almost too much that it's creeping in the mids and muddy-ing the signature up

        • @krisspy:
I tried both T1 and HD800 but they didn't give me much impression in terms of comfort.
          Have you tried AD2000X?

I don't think the bass of M50 is lacking at all as well.
Actually when I first got my M50 (not M50x), the bass was super bloated! It was fun to listen to some hip-hop music like that though lol The bass turned normal once burnt in but I forgot how long that took.

IMHO, M50 is a bit muddy but they are very fun to listen to and super sturdy.
I would recommend them to anyone without hesitation ;)

        • @sheepy: the 3d wing on the audio technicas didn't work too well for me. Not enough support and moves around too easily since headphones are essentially resting on springs.

      • I own the ATH M50 and the Beyerdynamic DT770Pro. The Beyer wins hands down when it comes to comfort and sound quality IMHO. To the extent the M50 is virtually unused. The clamping felt quite uncomfortable, especially after 3-4 hrs of extended use.

Also, coupled with the modmic, the DT770 is my go-to gaming headset for extended gaming sessions. :D

    • agreed, i still have my m50's and i find they're starting to annoy me. i'll be looking at upgrading soon - sound quality is good for the price, but they're far too tight on the head. after several hours they get pretty uncomfortable.

i paid around $150 for them a year or two ago from headphones.com.au

  • Give the exchange rate, this is a very good deal.

  • Got these a week back for $179.. Damn..

  • Nice price, I was torn between these, their A900x and their MSR7, but I actually sprung for the latter before I saw this deal. Maybe I can get both and sell the one I like less…

  • The M50 are an awesome sounding piece of kit. However, ive got a big head and ears, after about 2-3hrs they were painful to wear. I downgraded to the Hyperx cloud 2 and the comfort is next level whilst the sound is no where near the quality of the M50.

  • Great headphones!

  • Great pair. I bought when they were $199 at release.

Found mine too a long time to 'wear in' - for ages they sounded tinny but are now great.

So comfortable and the different cables are great.

The best thing is the design and thought that went into the 3.5mm end of the cable - I've not come across a phone case where the included cable didn't fit.

  • -4

Highly overrated, shit headphones with no bass depth. If you like bass, don't get these. I own them, and I own many other headphones. Stupid fan boys will always disagree.

    • what are good headphones?

I have Sennheiser HD700's and if i'm honest, they are decent but nothing amazing like their reviews. (although I'm comparing with 5 figure speakers + amps)

      • HD800s hold up to genelecs in terms of detail, if that helps.

Still prefer the imaging of monitors, any day though.

        • yeah, i blame myself for being cheap. I should of got the 800's straight up.

    • I had the Dt-990 pro 250 ohms for a while and now looking for better cans. I enjoyed the bass of the dt-990 but found them to be too bright and lacking warmth. Do you think the ath-m50x will be a downgrade?

      • The DT-990 pro are nice headphones and do think it'll be a downgrade. Note you're comparing open vs closed-back headphones though so it'll be different from a sound perspective. Less leakage, a tad boomier.

      • I have DT880 600ohm, I feel they are a bit brighter/cleaner than M50 but they probably are not for bassheads.
The bass of DT880 is quite lean in terms of quantity, guess that's the signature of Beyers headphones.
For decent bass headphone with similar budget, I would recommend Philips Fidelio X1 (X2 is the new version, so more expensive).
Got mine X1 from Massdrop for $170 US shipped back in June.
Their bass is lively, comparable to Hifiman HE500 to my years.

    • What do/did you have them plugged into? Why I ask is that they are 38 ohms so require a bit more grunt to get the most out of them

For example I had to go and buy a soundcard Ausus Xonar DG to run them properly on my PC as the onboard sound wasnt powerful enough.

The difference with the soundcard was huge.

      Explains it here: http://www.turntablelab.com/pages/headphone-buying-guide-wha…

      • It baffles me that you can link to a URL that is quite obviously saying the absolute opposite to your initial suggestion.

38 ohm cans are low impedance.. pretty much anything will drive them and drive them well.

I have many audio technica headphones, they are fine on anything I've used.

The URL you link to says the same thing :-|

        • "Most headphones with low impedance (less than 25 ohms, approximately) require little power to deliver high audio levels. For example, low impedance headphones will work well with equipment with weak amplification like portable music players, phones, and other portable devices.
Headphones with higher impedance (25 ohms and over, approximately) demand more power to deliver high audio levels. "

Is 38 more or less then 25?

You cant plug ATH M50 into an iphone and expect it to work properly, hence my question to you about what you are using to drive the headphones.

        • @noise36:

You're quite right, that site does agree with you.

38 ohms for headphones is still low impedance.

The site you linked to is wrong. End of story.

        • @lr326:

          lol

You never did say what you were using to drive the ATH M50's you didn't like, or explain which headphones in this price range you prefer. i.e. something useful that could help someone.

        • @noise36:

Sorry, missed that bit, was doing a bit of research for you:

I used M30s out of an ipod for years and years (65 ohms)

I use AD900X and A900Xs every single day out of an onboard sound of a rubbish motherboard, every single day (38 ohms ad900, 42 ohms A900x)

Hell, I've listened to my HD800s (300 ohm) out of an onboard - wasn't amazing, but wasn't super quiet

Also, I never said I disliked the M50 - they are one of the few audio technicas that elude me buying, but I suspect A900X is a better buy unless portability is necessary.

        • @lr326:

The A900X look interesting in that same price range as an M50 alternative.

Running all those 38-65 ohm headphones out of ipods and onboard sound cards, it will work yes, but you wont be getting the most out of them thats for sure.

    • +2

Stupid fan boys will always disagree.

That's the kind of language fanboys use.

I didn't like mine at all until I listened to them with a headphone amp. I still find it a bit bright, but for $139 I'm very satisfied.

      • Tbh, if on a budget I'd rather spend $20 on the Xiaomi Piston's. I know, they're not headphones, but they're way cheaper, offer excellent isolation and sound way better.

Other than that, it's worth saving up for something like the V-Moda M100's.

Doesn't matter what I plugged the M50's into, they sounded flat and shitty. Some people just don't like admitting they purchased a shit product, or they've upgraded from some shit Chinese headphones and so anything would sound good.

        • They sound flat and shitty because you didn't have enough power to drive them properly.

The pistons have a very low ohm rating so will sound "good" on anything.

        • @noise36:

I did say "Doesn't matter what I plugged the M50's into, they sounded flat and shitty. " -That includes my sound card (Purity Sound 2 with Realtek ALC1150 DAC and TI NE5532 amplifier) and Galaxy S5 with sound mods.

Also, can you please explain why my Pistons and V-Moda M-100's sound good regardless of what I plug them into?

        • Some people just don't like admitting they purchased a shit product, or they've upgraded from some shit Chinese headphones and so anything would sound good.

OK, no one is trying to change your mind, so you can keep believing anything you want.

Also, can you please explain why my Pistons and V-Moda M-100's sound good regardless of what I plug them into?

It could very well have nothing to do with the headphones or the source.

        • @eug:

I guess it has to do with the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere then.

        • @tren: You missed it, but that's ok. :)

        • I could give you a simpler explanation, you simply don't like how this headphone sounds.
Not everyone likes "flat", if you like things that do not sound "flat" then that's your preference (just like how liking relatively "flat" headphone is a preference).

If you like "bassy" headphone, that's completely fine, regardless of what others may or may not say. It's just like liking "flat" headphone is fine. Whether you like how a headphone sounds really depends on (well, assuming that it's a reasonable one) depends on you and what you like.

That's people tend to say give a headphone a go before buying them.

  • Audio Technica ATH-M50x or Audio Technica ATH-A900X ???

In terms of sound quality // portability// price // open vs closed

    • I'd search if I were you because not many will have owned both.

      e.g http://www.head-fi.org/t/652817/ath-m50-vs-ath-a900x/15

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/216202 for deal on A900x

      • yea i've already done my googling although i wanted more opinions on this matter

    • -1

Unless you need closed phones, ATHs without a second thought. M50s are one of those things that some techhead site like Gizmodo recommend and then people used to ipod earbuds hype them up like they are something special, when really they are just decent cheap headphones.

Just look at the people here with 'amazing' and 'incredible' and 'awesome'. Maybe if your reference point is overhearing some fat girl's Beats while on the train.

Source: I have had various ATH models for like a decade, and still use 700s for watching TV or playing Last of Us when the wife is sleeping. My music headphones are all Beyers, though.

      • which one are you using? ive had my eye on the DT 880 pro/premium for a while now but as i said, cost is a factor being a uni student.
Its quite tempting seeing these audio technicas go on sale

        • I've got 700s and 900s. To be honest, there isn't much difference.

I had DT880/600s, and they are great headphones, but you need decent amplification. If you can even find them at a not-stupid price, that is. I ended up trading mine for a pair of T90s, which I love and are a definite step up. 95% of T1 performance at like a third of the price.

      • +3

One of my friends is a music producer and another is a recording engineer. They say the M50s are good for their class. There certainly are better headphones, but we're talking $150 here.

Source: a music producer and recording engineer.

        • thank you!!!! have they used other brands such as AKG, Shure, beyerdynamic?

        • @givemethebestdeals: Yup, the recording engineer's main headphones is a pair of Beyers. Can't remember the model. The music producer normally uses his studio monitors. The studio he's with has won awards from Cannes, APRA, Adfest, and a whole bunch of others.

  • Great pair of headphones, I'd buy them but I only ever use speakers =(

  • Great headphones. I have a pair of the blue/brown coloured ones.

Do yourself a favour and upgrade to velour earpads though. Way more comfortable when you're listening for longer periods of time!

  • Hmm. I hope my order was the regular stock. I ordered at 7:20am this morning and it seemed normal.

  • +3

For those of you who missed out, I found that SoundCorp in Melbourne have these (M50x) headphones at the same price including free shipping; ie $159. SoundCorp

    • +3

Nice, maybe you should post this, as most people wont open this link again as it's marked expired

      • Thanks Teal. I will give it a go. Wish me luck.

      • Ok Teal, I created a new post. Can you let me know if you can see it please?

        • Hey d123, I see it , however unfortunately they must of changed the price not long after you posted it :(

It was still 159 when I looked at 1pm

        • @Teal: Hi Teal, yes they returned the price to $199. I called Soundcorp and they said that it was a short term sale and they were price matching with someone else. Oh well.. Have a good day.

  • Quick question, obviously this deal expired but does anyone know a store in Australia where i'd be able to try a pair on? I've had my eye on these for quite some time now, but i'm not too confident in buying a pair until i've tried them.

    • I see you're in NSW but since you asked about Australia, Brisbane Sound in Bowen Hills have them, and a few others, on display for you to try.

      • Ok, thanks for that! I'll keep that in mind for the next time i'm up there. Hopefully it'll be sooner rather than later, because i'm pretty excited to get them.

    • Minidisk in Sydney I've heard has them as well.
