Mentioned by G5 in his awesome deal and just saw a big price drop today so I think I might as well post it separately. EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4GB SSC GAMING ACX 2.0+, Whisper Silent Cooling w/ Free Installed Backplate Graphics Card 04G-P4-3967-KR — was USD$229 yesterday and now USD$179.99 + $11.27 postage to Australia = $191.26 delivered, which is around $266 AUD. Much cheaper than anything on staticICE.

If you have AmEx however you can also get 15% off $100+ purchase. So $179.99 x 0.85 + $11.27 = USD $164.27 (~AUD$228).

    Nice one.

Would have got this if I didn't order the Sapphire R9 380 for US$209 (US$191 with AMEX) a couple of days back. I think the 380 is a slightly better card but this 960 has silent cooling…

    • +1

That's pretty much always the case with competing AMD cards huh? Came across the same thing researching before I got my 970. They offer slightly better performance at the cost of noise and heat…

      • Wear a headset while playing :). But they do work great.

        • hehe Though I was more concerned with heat output. One of the reasons I went 6700k over a 5820K.

        • +1

@TheContact: Oh. See I have got R9 280 with i5 4th gen and 8 GB RAM. I keep an eye on when gaming to see if they are maxing out. They dont. Its the GPU which makes a lot of noise due to high temps and I can live with it till the time I am getting good display. Temp. stays at 62-67 degrees on average. I play BF4 on high settings with W10. In summers heat might be an issue if you have a small room, but I am happy with the performance as a whole for my PC.

    • R9 380 is much better than GTX960.

      • now that does makes my feel better - cos my R9 380 has shipped already now. From my reading there seemed to be a bit of debate as to whether the 380 or the 960 was the way to go… but the 380 was the general consensus it seemed.

Thought it was dirt on the screen.

  • Can anyone confirm what the deal is with warranty on something like this? Pretty sure EVGA do a global warranty…

Great deal though- perfect card for 1080p gaming, especially with the 4GB Vram (for those that like playing Skyrim with 9000 mods!)

  • I managed to get it with expedited shipping for $242.90 after the 15% off AMEX. :)

  • +2

My Intel onboard video card kills this

    • +4

with the heat it got when trying to play solitaire :)

  • How would this compare to my current 2012 EVGA GTX 680 SC Signature2/Dual Fan/2048MB GDDR5: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008AFZ0VQ/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M…

I've been thinking of upgrading since I got a Dell 34" Ultrawide.

  • +1

    great deal
but I do think its reflective of how unpopular the GTX960 is. I just don't think its a great mid-range card at all

    • I assume the 970 is much better?

      • +4

I think the big problem with the GTX960 (locally at least) is the price. Probably partly the $AUD to blame here. It really is a pretty good card, for performance, temperature, noise and power consumption at 1080p resolution its great. The GTX970 is more powerful yes, but unless you are gaming at greater than 1080P resolution you probably wouldn't notice the difference in a lot of games.

        • +1

Even when the AUD was on par with the USD, we Australians were still getting in screwed with prices on hardware, hence the reason so many purchased from Amazon and the like back in those days.

In general but more noticeably on PC hardware, we are also getting rammed from behind on price down under.

      • Yes. I was going to go the 960 from my old 560ti. Made the jump to 970 instead.
960 isn't really worth it IMO unless you have a very old card.

      • Currently got a pair of 7970s, but need to power my 3440x1440 ultrawide. Might look at GTX970.

        • +4

Don't, you'll want more VRAM for that resolution and the GTX970 has issues with over 3.5GB of VRAM usage.

You'd be better off with a R9 390/X - Even then, both of them would likely be a downgrade compared to your CF 7970's - even if they do have "only" 3GB of VRAM

        • The CF 7970s are struggling with anything FPS, even being GHz editions. Might need to look at the higher end cards.

        • You use Windows 10, I've had nothing but issues with my crossfire since upgrading.

        • Nah, still on Win8

        • @iRMonkey:

          I'm running a 295X2 on Win10 fine so maybe it's Fab's PC

Most single GPU's under the 980/290X will struggle pretty badly at that res. It's not until you get up into the Fury/X and GTX 980Ti that you would find good performance at higher settings.

        • I have 2 * 7970s as well and they work a treat. Hard to justify upgrading at the moment to be honest.

        • @XeKToReX:

Witcher 3 is my game of choice and I've hs nothing but issues with it, forums are filled with the same issues.

          StarCraft 2 works fine though.

      • For gaming yes, but not for 4k streaming or h.265 decoding.
Apparently Nvidia add some feature to this version of Maxwell core, namely HDCP 2.2 and ability to hardware decode next gen format h.265 aka HEVC.
Older version of Maxwell core (GTX970, GTX980) doesn't support h.265/HEVC decoding (only encoding) and doesn't support HDCP 2.2 copy protection scheme, so some protected 4k content may not be able to be displayed.

  • I was gonna buy it for 4k@60fps via hdmi 2.0 but it only supports HEVC and not VP9. 4K@60fps Youtube is gonna struggle.

  • Is the 670 for cheap?

  • Does the AmEx discount work with bank issued AmEx cards?

    • +1

Yes it does with Comm Bank Amex

    • yes i saw the discount appear using my anz amex. i didnt go thru with purchase but it clearly showed up.

    • ANZ Platinum AMEX confirmed

    • Thanks ya'll.

  • Where is a good place to compare this card with others?

  • I currently have HD 7950.
This would only be a minor upgrade?
    Not worth it?

    • I am in the exact same position and most people seem to be saying not really… better to o/c CPU or gfx a little or just hold out for now unless you really need too.

That being said if i saw a drop in the GTX970 MSI i would be hard pressed to not buy it…

    • 7950 is comparable to GTX 960. Might even go backwards

    • I have the same card and it wouldn't be worth it to get this card.

my next card will be a R9 390 maybe a GTX 970 if it's a good enough price.

  • you can get a Gainward 960 GTX 4GB this weekend for $287.10 at msy http://www.msy.com.au/qld/brendale/new-products/15671--gainw… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/216479

  • I currently use a HD7970 with a 4k screen, I have to say gaming isn't particularly smooth. Would this 960 be an upgrade for me?

    • +2

Nope, not enough to waste this much money on.

To get decent performance at medium>high settings, look at the GTX980/Ti or R9 390/X

Your best bet would be to drop the resolution of your games to 1080p in the settings as it should scale perfectly on your monitor.

      • The 4GB of ram would help a bit with higher resolutions, compared to the 7970's 3GB but probably not worth the upgrade. If you are or have dropped cash on a 4K monitor you should be looking at least something like a 980 GTX or higher

      • Yeah I was thinking of upgrading my hd7950 which I got from pccasegear from this deal-
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/77636

for $299, but it doesn't seem like much of an upgrade.

I thought I would get a much better graphics card 3 years later for a similar price but I guess I was wrong.

        • Yep, i expect due to the AUD now, it is is quite expensive to get a graphics card worthy of upgrading. My OC GTX 670 seemed to play the Star wars beta fine, so im going to sit tight for a while yet.

    • Crossfire with another 7970? Unless you use Windows 10.

      • Why not in windows 10?

        • Well, people have reported issues with the 7xxx in Crossfire with Windows 10, apparently not as bad with 2xx. But that could be the vocal minority.

      • 7970s are hard to get and really expensive now. Significantly more expensive than they were three years ago. I'm in the same position as them.

        • I had 3 of them in crossfire but one died and now not worth replacing due to the high cost. Happy with the 2 of them in crossfire - not sure why I needed 3 lol.

        • I think the bit mining craze is over, so people should be selling up. I picked up an OC 7950 for $140, I was happy with that.

        • Duplicate comment and I can't find the delete button…

        • @FabMan: Should, but aren't. Have a look at prices, 7970s are about 400$ and up, which is what I paid in 2013.

        • @MrMcHairyHead: Woah, way too much.

First search found one for $150:

          http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/richmond/components/his-amd-7…

        • +1

Also look for an R9 280X which is just a rebadged HD 7970.

        • @FabMan: You've gotta admit that's an outlier and most of them are at least 250. Also I wasn't really thinking of second hand ones.

        • @MrMcHairyHead:

Probably an outlier, but that was the result after my first search.

I was only thinking of second hand, wouldn't pay good money for such an old card, be crazy.

  • Have a EVGA 750 Ti 2G for my mITX build, great card.

Wish the 960 SC 2G version dropped as well :)

For anyone who doesn't know which video card is better, you can refer to this picture.

  • Makes me glad I got a pair of GTX760's (SLI'ed) before they went EOL for $180 each.

  • Ok I want a Amex card haha, what's a good one? I'm on 39.000 if that helps and shop at coles most of all…

  • I have had my 5970HD for years and its still good :o enough power for 1080p and really quiet.
If I was too upgrade the GTX 970 would be the least I would be looking at.

  • I'm tempted to get the 970 now… just under $400… must resist!

  • I think it may be possible to earn an additional 5% cashback until 01 Nov. with Giving Assistant from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/216165.

  • Has anybody determined what the best high end gaming graphics card would be to get through this 15% off? I'm gonna start buying for a new rig this week, and this bargains come at a great time!

I notice a lot of cards work out to be pretty comparable priced to a lot of Australian stores, some more than others.

    • +2

msi 980ti. Its under 800 with amex and using 28 degrees to buy amazon gift cards. Overclocked like 15% out of the box. Otherwise the gtx 970 ssc from evga is good at under 400.

  • +2

Just wait for the release of the Pascal cards in 2016.

    • +1

The problem with that is you can always wait. There is always something just around the corner.

      • +1

That is true, and i agree that a bargin must be had

But I must warn you that these cards will be 10x faster :o

there could be an equivalent price drop ;D

        • +3

I will bet you a million dollars the Pascal cards are not 10x faster.

        • @MrMcHairyHead:

Pascal's highest end will be more than 10x faster than the slowest Maxwell card, so I'll take that bet if you'll honour that technicality.

        • @FabMan: That's not a technicality, that's just changing it. Obviously we would compare equivalent cards.

        • @MrMcHairyHead:

Would you really pay up a million dollars if it was?

    • Sweet, might put off upgrading the GTX570 till next year then.

  • Thanks, been searching for a new card since I broke my gtx780ti. Ended up getting MSi Gtx 970 100 million edition. $438 delivered with free copy of assassins creed syndicate or rainbow siege.

    • Is that from Amazon?
