TPG Mobile New VF 4G Plans - $19.99/Mth $400 Calls & SMS, 1.3GB Data - No Contract

1551

TPG Mobile have changed carriers from Optus to Vodafone and it's actually a pretty decent low-mid tier user plan.

For $19.99/month (+$10 one off sim fee)

$400 Included "Value" for Calls and SMS
- call rates are the standard (ie pretty high) for these sort of caps - 99c/min + 40c flag fall, SMS 25.3c. MMS 50c.

1.3GB Included Data (per KB Billing)
-option of +$10/GB excess blocks

And for what they are worth…
Unlimited Calls to TPG Mobile, TPG Home Phone, TPG Support 13 14 23
Unlimited Voicemail Deposit & Retrieval

This is all on a month to month no contract basis.

There are also the higher caps, but in my opinion aren't that special in terms of what else is available at this price range:
$29.95/month for Unlimited calls and SMS w/ 2GB data
$39.95/month for Unlimited calls and SMS w/ 5GB data

The $19.99 deal is in my opinion one of the best around and arguably better than what it previously was under Optus, but now with a more useable data inclusion. No discount for TPG ADSL users unfortunately.

Caveats
-$10 one off SIM fee

-Vodafone Network
I haven't used them personally since the horror mass exodus days. Supposedly if Whirlpool is to be believed, they're now much improved especially around metro areas (less so in the bush). Have a look at Oztowers where you can actually find the Vodafone towers near you and the bands they operate on. Having a phone which has LTE 850MHz would be very useful to make the most of improved signal strength, especially indoors. It's the equivalent of 4GX for Telstra/Optus on their 700MHz band.

-Although you pay $19.99/month as technically a post paid plan, once you use up the $400 in call credits, you need to top up your account before able to make more calls/SMS. Good in that it helps avoid nasty bill shock. Inconvenient I guess if you're going over often, though it's probably a signal to change to a higher cap plan.

-No international SMS, voice calls included. As a suggestion, if these things are important to you, VOIP and web SMS services like Pennytel probably offer the best deals in relation to this.

Get out of jail free card…
If you don't like it for whatever reason (eg VF network), switch to this Optus deal before Nov 28
$20/month with Unlimited calls and SMS with 1GB/month. However, $10 discount only lasts for 12 months until which point it goes back to a pretty mediocre $30/month (ie look for someone else time).

Comparisons for ~$20

1) Spintel - Optus 4G
The guys I used to be with. However, they've destroyed their own selling point with a new $5 fee to reduce down usage tiers starting next month in November.
It used to be that for $18/month you'd have 200 mins of calls, 200 SMS and 500MB of data, with the option of increasing calls/SMS/data by one tier if you breached the cap. Next month you could then reduce them back down to the minimums and see where the month takes you.
Now with a $5 tier reducing fee, you're essentially stuck on your higher usage tiers as it costs more to reduce them back down. Thus destroying the flexibility and whole point of the tier system.
Still a very good deal though if you're mainly after data. You could get for $27 4GB of data, 200 mins calls and 200 SMS.

2) Amaysim - Optus 4G
On their $19.99 Flexi plan you have 500Mb of included data and then you can use the rest of the credit for calls, SMS or data packs.
Pretty good, but if you can cope with the VF network the TPG deal offers a more balanced deal with more inclusions.

3) Boost Mobile Telstra 4G
Main pros are that it runs on the Telstra network. 1GB data inclusion and unlimited SMS is decent too. However, only 100 mins of calls. Also this weird Sunday extra data thing for 24 hours. Again the TPG deal has more inclusions, but it depends on whether you need Telstra for reception.

4) Vaya
Just don't go there. Horror stories by the truckload and dodgy as all hell. Highest number of TIO complaints for any carrier/number of users. They may seem cheap, but with the "out of my dead hands" $20 security deposit, errant billing and general unreliability, I'd stay far far away. Just have a look at some of the comments in the Ozbargain deals as well

    • got the same offer, yay!!

  • Ok after email invitation received, then about a week, sim card arrived. This was yesterday. Yesterday night activated around 9pm. Got email said expected move over on the following day. Today got sms around 3pm says service will be active in one hour. Two hours later 5pm no network connected on my mobile, swap the sim and now on 4G… hurray…

I'm in Sydney cbd so Vodafone is good enough. Can't compare with Telstra of course! But I can feel more stable compare with the old Optus three g. Galaxy note 3.

    • Speak too soon, with old Optus 3g at post code 2172 Sydney, I had three to four bars signals but now only one sometimes two.

      • +1

I found at my house I would only get 1 bar of vodafone 4g with around 5 Mbps but if I turn off 4g I would get full reception and 10-15 Mbps on 3g. Didn't really matter for me since 4g is only for internet and I have wi-fi at home so I was still getting full reception for phone calls. So might be worth turning off 4g to test what kind of speeds and reception you get on vodafone 3g.

        • you are legend.. same thing happen here magically goes up from 1 bar to full. also at home i have wifi dont need 4g.
next is to modify my llama so it will automatically switch the 4G on and off depending on location and wifi connection

        • @eisniwre: Not sure if you're aware but since 4g is only for data the phone will automatically drop 4g and switch to 3g when making or receiving a call.

        • @phew: so I don't need to turn off 4g when at home? Anyway llama doesn't seems able to turn off on 4G. Anyone can help?

        • @eisniwre: yep you don't need to turn it off :) would only be worth turning off if you didn't have wi-fi because maybe vodafone 3g would give better internet speeds due to the better reception than 4g. So leave 4g on so that when you are out of the house you can get the better 4g speeds. The phone switches to 3g on calls so your 3g reception will determine the quality of calls. Next time you're in a call check to see the if the phone reverted to 3g and how much reception you're getting.

        • @phew: thanks next time when I'm home I will ask someone to call me / vice versa.

        • @eisniwre: you can setup you phone to connect only to 3G. Just check under the network setting.

        • @msmhw:I know but I want it to be automatically toggled - 4G when I'm at work and 3G at home

        • @eisniwre: have you tried tasker?

        • @msmhw: not yet, i have been using llama for years but if necessary will try to learn tasker later - lately llama is slow updating the location/gps.

        • @eisniwre:
Can you use Wifi as a trigger in llama? ie if connected to home Wifi change to 3G. My choice would be tasker though it is a bit harder to configure.

        • @Shonky: havent try that, instead, i put condition to toggle when entering home area and also enter cell signal. all other actions are fine but not toggling 4G. the owner said he doesnt have 4G phone so couldnt test. maybe this feature is there but not working.. any other llama users can confirm? thanks

Didn't read all the above, BUT if you go over allocated data, I believe it's 10 cents per Mb. They DO NOT HAVE the $10 per Gb that most other people have. That's #100 per Gb. Beware.

    • Perhaps you should of, as then you wouldn't make unfounded comments.

      As per their website:

      Excess Data:
T4G I, II & III plans have a certain amount of Included Data each monthly billing cycle. If at any time in a billing cycle you use more than the amount of >Included Data, we will charge $10 out of your Prepaid Balance to increase the amount of Included Data available in that particular billing cycle by 1GB. If >there is insufficient funds in your Prepaid Balance, your Mobile Data will become inactive until your Prepaid Balance is topped up to a sufficient level.

      Charges for Excess Data:
      Example of charges:
1MB excess data: We will charge $10 out of your Prepaid Balance which will give you an extra GB to use for the billing period
1001MB excess data: We will charge another $10 out of your Prepaid Balance which will give you another extra GB to use for the billing period

      • Yeah, you're right. Can I neg my comment? I did say "I believe" as I just went onto the Vodafone $19.99 k on TPG and I rang TPG and confirmed that I will get charged 10 cents per Mb, with no $10 blocks available.

      • thats good, for the new plans. but for old customers who received new special offer (ie incl. international calls n smses) and free 2 months, the excess data charges is not $10 for 1 gb but per mb.

        • +1

The main post is about the one for new customers.

Old customers already get greater call and data quotas. There has to be some cons.

TPG is literally the worst company I've ever dealt with. went 1 week without being able to receive any calls due to them… refuse to refund me… refuse to care. Worthless. Unrepentent. Stopped contacting me the second i told them i was fed up with their service and NEEDED to buy another sim.
