TPG Mobile New VF 4G Plans - $19.99/Mth $400 Calls & SMS, 1.3GB Data - No Contract

1551

TPG Mobile have changed carriers from Optus to Vodafone and it's actually a pretty decent low-mid tier user plan.

For $19.99/month (+$10 one off sim fee)

$400 Included "Value" for Calls and SMS
- call rates are the standard (ie pretty high) for these sort of caps - 99c/min + 40c flag fall, SMS 25.3c. MMS 50c.

1.3GB Included Data (per KB Billing)
-option of +$10/GB excess blocks

And for what they are worth…
Unlimited Calls to TPG Mobile, TPG Home Phone, TPG Support 13 14 23
Unlimited Voicemail Deposit & Retrieval

This is all on a month to month no contract basis.

There are also the higher caps, but in my opinion aren't that special in terms of what else is available at this price range:
$29.95/month for Unlimited calls and SMS w/ 2GB data
$39.95/month for Unlimited calls and SMS w/ 5GB data

The $19.99 deal is in my opinion one of the best around and arguably better than what it previously was under Optus, but now with a more useable data inclusion. No discount for TPG ADSL users unfortunately.

Caveats
-$10 one off SIM fee

-Vodafone Network
I haven't used them personally since the horror mass exodus days. Supposedly if Whirlpool is to be believed, they're now much improved especially around metro areas (less so in the bush). Have a look at Oztowers where you can actually find the Vodafone towers near you and the bands they operate on. Having a phone which has LTE 850MHz would be very useful to make the most of improved signal strength, especially indoors. It's the equivalent of 4GX for Telstra/Optus on their 700MHz band.

-Although you pay $19.99/month as technically a post paid plan, once you use up the $400 in call credits, you need to top up your account before able to make more calls/SMS. Good in that it helps avoid nasty bill shock. Inconvenient I guess if you're going over often, though it's probably a signal to change to a higher cap plan.

-No international SMS, voice calls included. As a suggestion, if these things are important to you, VOIP and web SMS services like Pennytel probably offer the best deals in relation to this.

Get out of jail free card…
If you don't like it for whatever reason (eg VF network), switch to this Optus deal before Nov 28
$20/month with Unlimited calls and SMS with 1GB/month. However, $10 discount only lasts for 12 months until which point it goes back to a pretty mediocre $30/month (ie look for someone else time).

Comparisons for ~$20

1) Spintel - Optus 4G
The guys I used to be with. However, they've destroyed their own selling point with a new $5 fee to reduce down usage tiers starting next month in November.
It used to be that for $18/month you'd have 200 mins of calls, 200 SMS and 500MB of data, with the option of increasing calls/SMS/data by one tier if you breached the cap. Next month you could then reduce them back down to the minimums and see where the month takes you.
Now with a $5 tier reducing fee, you're essentially stuck on your higher usage tiers as it costs more to reduce them back down. Thus destroying the flexibility and whole point of the tier system.
Still a very good deal though if you're mainly after data. You could get for $27 4GB of data, 200 mins calls and 200 SMS.

2) Amaysim - Optus 4G
On their $19.99 Flexi plan you have 500Mb of included data and then you can use the rest of the credit for calls, SMS or data packs.
Pretty good, but if you can cope with the VF network the TPG deal offers a more balanced deal with more inclusions.

3) Boost Mobile Telstra 4G
Main pros are that it runs on the Telstra network. 1GB data inclusion and unlimited SMS is decent too. However, only 100 mins of calls. Also this weird Sunday extra data thing for 24 hours. Again the TPG deal has more inclusions, but it depends on whether you need Telstra for reception.

4) Vaya
Just don't go there. Horror stories by the truckload and dodgy as all hell. Highest number of TIO complaints for any carrier/number of users. They may seem cheap, but with the "out of my dead hands" $20 security deposit, errant billing and general unreliability, I'd stay far far away. Just have a look at some of the comments in the Ozbargain deals as well

Me too. Been with Vaya for over 12months. No problems whatsoever!

In fact TPG have been the Bain of my existence with my wofes SIM. Constant debits to my account and a lack of reception.

      Time to look else where!

    • +1

Same here, happy with Vaya, 18$ every month like a clockwork.

    • Also with Vaya, nearly two years now.Moved from Optus where I was paying three times the price for the same service.

Me, wife and daughter all on Vaya for a total of $54 per month. Yet to see any plan that gets close for value and have had no problems.

Be aware that you generally only hear from those who have problems and try for yourself. Vaya wouldn't still have a business if they were anywhere near as bad as they are made out to be on here!

      • +1

They are that bad. I put a group of people onto Vaya and they all left. Billing, poor reception and terrible support were the common complaints. I experienced all three myself.

        • For me the reception has been exactly the same as it was with Optus, same dodgy spots during my train journey to work etc, suggesting any problems lie with them rather than Vaya.

I would imagine all of the cheaper options don't have great customer support, that's why they are cheap. I can only speak from personal experience and its been fine for me and very good value.

Re billing again I have had no real problems. The only issue was having to chase up refund of the $200 deposit paid to turn on global roaming after I returned home, but this took no more than a couple of emails to fix up.

        • +2

The reception is no better or worse than Optus. They are just resellers. Saying Vaya has bad reception on its own in particular is misguided.

  • +4

Oh no, how is this a positive good deal? They are removing international calling! :( been on the grandfathered 16.99 with DSL for years. There's nothing like it, never had any issues with the product or their customer service, always helpful.

Will have to start calling my parents and grandparents on FaceTime and Skype again!

Also no ADSL discounts with less overall calling 400 vs old 550… 300 extra MD isn't worth losing international and 150 dollars worth while paying 3 dollars more :(.

Why TPG why. I hate carriers in Australia. But they're not as bad as Canada or the US so it's ok we're actually pretty lucky. It was a good ride while it lasted.

    • +1

The $19.99 is one of the best for what is available now. If we were to compare grandfathered plans, we could go on all day.

Costs have risen, especially on the Optus network.

As mentioned above, the international inclusions using "value" credit aren't all that great when you consider the call rate and you could get the equivalent talk time for $1-2 on a VOIP plan.

      • Umm why have costs risen? If anything they should fall.

I think tpg is after fatter profits.

In any infrastructure project, the initial costs are the highest, then the subsequent upkeep costs are marginal and end up toward profit.

        • +1

Ehh 4G and 4Gx needs new infrastructure.

People demanding more bandwidth and larger download quotas.

        • @plasmapuff: well said plasmapuff. Telechoice also increased their prices quite a bit.

    • +1

Yeah, not great news at all for those of us who use international calls! Keen to understand if we can stay on the same plan, or have to move to their new offerings.

  • Feeling so glad i never switched my mobile to TPG now.

  • +1

Im about to start purchasing my own phone/plan instead of relying on my parents for these things and I'm just wondering how people usually get their phones. Do they usually buy outright and then buy a phone-less plan? Or do people just usually go with the phones+plan? What are the cons and pros of each?

I make ~$400 a week and I don't really care for the latest and best phone (I'm usually a generation or two behind) so I'd appreciate any pointers.

    • +5

Cant speak for everybody, but I think most Ozbargainers buy outright then buy a phone-less plan cos it's cheaper.

For eg. Optus Samsung 32gb S6 plan is $60 (unlimited standard calls + 150mins to some countries, 3gb data, unlimited sms/mms) + $16 handset repayment = $76 per month over 24 months (and you're locked in) is $1824.
After 24 month, you still gotta pay $60 per month for the plan.

pros: If something happens, you can take it to a store and they should be able to help you.
cons: If you want to leave before the 24 months is up, then it is very expensive!

You can buy it for $669 here + the 2nd $29.99 TPG plan (unlimited calls, 2gb data, unlimited sms). Total is 669 + 719.76 ($29.99*24 months just to compare) = $1388.76 and you can switch at any time.

pros: No contract so you can switch to a better plan at any time. It's cheaper and you can control and buy a new phone when its right/cheap.
cons: If something happens, you sort out your own warranty.

NB: not sure if the optus plan is the cheapest, but just doing a comparison with phone plan vs outright :)

      • Yeah buying outright would always be cheaper.

For example, on the low tier plans:

The Samsung S6 with Optus is $55 for the first 12 month, then becomes $65, so lets say that it is $60 pm (500Mb).
This includes the handset repayments. That is $1440 over 24 months.

The TPG/Voda $20 pm over 24 months plus the S6 handset would be $1149.

So buying outright would save you about $150 per year.

    • I've been doing this for the last 3 years ever since I did the math. If, by some magical chance, you can get them to give you 50% off the website prices, then go for it, if not, byop…!

  • my live connect still wins $20 a month for 2gb, + $600 calls

  • +3

Would they still charge $11 for exit and $20 non-refundable "prepayment"?

I have just changed to vaya from TPG and they charged $11 and refuse to refund the $20 (they called it sercuity deposit when joining, and changed to call prepayment after that).

Emailed them serval time still not help.
Finally they refunded all after I contacted TIO.

    • +1

Not mentioned anymore in their current product summary, whereas I believe those fees were part of the old terms and conditions?

I'd be going to the TIO too if they pull this when I leave as it's not mentioned currently at all.

  • +4

+1 for descriptions and comparisons. If this were right for me I'd surely take it.

  • +1

    :(

  • Still getting $600 worth of calls and 1gb from Telechoice on Telstra network for 15.99. No deal.

But good write up so upvoted.

    • +1

      Link?

      • +1

That plan might not be around anymore, but even if it is, keep in mind Telechoice has no 4G, and limited Telstra wholesale coverage. I'm hoping Voda is actually better coverage for me these days because I haven't had the best experience with Telechoice's reception.

        • +1

remember voda has domestic roaming on optus network too (i.e. out in the sticks etc)… a lot of ppl forget that.

        • @Xizor:

Yeah appears to be grandfathers plan was a Kogan one. Also there coverage is awesome, on the weekends I'm out on our family farms and gets some form of bars yet my old Optus would get nothing.

        • Agree, I get shitty reception with Telechoice too, have been with them for two years, thinking about changing.

  • I think Virgin mobile will have $10 discount on their plans as well for TPG customers.
    To be confirmed.

  • People should be aware that Vodafone are an essentially urban provider in Australia. Sure they have towers in most sizable provincial towns and along highways connecting major cities, but once a few k's out of town there is no rural network. If you need to travel and require a service in regional Australia my advice is to stick with Telstra and Optus who are actively investing in operating a regional service.

    • +2

Vodafone roam onto Optus where there is no Vodafone coverage

      • Yes we live near one of those Optus towers with a Voda roaming arrangement and it's not a seamless thing. First you will have to do a network scan on your smartphone and select Voda(R) from the list of broadcasters. Then if you drive into a gap in the landscape which gives your handset the sniff of a Voda(AU)signal, the simcard will default the handset to it. This entails another network search or else you will get a + for emergency calls only in the phone's notification area, obviously Voda don't want their users to hook up to Optus as an option if their own signal can be had, however hopeless that may be. I have a phone with Voda and tbh I'm over them and we don't even live in a remote location.

For those who are worried about losing international calls, this is what TPG has emailed me in my invitation. I assume all invitations will be the same. First 2 months free too.

    $550 Included Value
Standard AU & International Calls & Text
    Unlimited Calls
to TPG Mobile, Home Phone and Voicemail
    1GB Included Data
    Excess Data: 10¢ per MB
    4G Coverage
    (LTE 1800/850 MHz)

2 MONTHS’ RECURRING CHARGES ON US

NO RECURRING CHARGES FOR THE FIRST 2 MONTHS! A SAVING OF $39.98!

    • Thanks for sharing. Thats such a relief!!

    • pretty good deal imo. my gf is on tpg and will be taking up the new $20 offer. i am on voda and have no major gripes.

    • Can't someone from TPG confirm or deny this?

    • I'm confused - so this TPG invitation says that international calls ARE still included? With VF? And how much is this plan monthly?

Also, existing customer here, haven't received any invitations yet.

      • $19.99 per month. I have three numbers for my family with TPG, but I've only received two invitations. The faq does say that the invitations won't all be sent out at once
        https://www.tpg.com.au/support/faqs_mobile.php#mobile_migrat…

I'm currently on the $16.99 grandfathered plan with a discount for bundling my home internet. But it seems the bundle discount isn't available anymore.

        • Thanks! Three services and zero invitations so far. However in that link, it says different offers / invitations may be sent out… (see last FAQ item).

        • @kyttiekat:

Changes to your TPG Mobile service email - prepayment still required and service barred if top up fails :(

    • I cant find this plan in TPG website. Could you provide a link? Cheers.

      • You won't find it on the website. Targeted email invitation for existing users.

    • Interestingly, I just found this snippet in the TPG mobile FAQs:

6.11 Someone I know received an invitation from TPG with a different offer from the invitation I received. Can I get that offer?

No, the offer is available only for the TPG mobile service number addressed in the invitation.

Soooo different offers will be coming out? :/

    • the data.. how come still the same 1GB? also 10c per mb instead of standard $10 per GB if over? not happy. 1GB isnt enough

      • I suppose you win some you lose some. International calls are invaluable to some users, so some people will be happy.

    • 1.5GB offered to me :D

  • +1

International calls vs extra 300mb for $19.99? Decisions…

  • are there any prepaid plans at the $20 price point? but i like my service to be cut off once the allowance is used up

    • +1

Services for calls and sms are cut off after $400. You'll also get sms warnings up to this point for both voice and data.

As for cutting off data, most phones have this function on board. Eg limit mobile data to 1.2gb.

  • I guess those existing TPG mobile customers will lose the $20 prepayment balance?

    • +1

      You'll have to ask them.

I suspect as this is a different plan with a different provider you should be able to get it back. Otherwise a quick mention to the TIO should help.

    • You're still with TPG. They'll still have the $20 prepayment balance. They're just switching the pipes their comminication goes through, not their whole billing system.

    • Changes to your TPG Mobile service email - prepayment still required and service barred if top up fails :(

  • -1

TPG -> Worst deal ever. I'm with vaya and have no problems

  • +1

I think it's better to stick with 3G when you only have 1GB per month. With 4G you would likely be spending more. If TPG doesn't force me I ain't moving anywhere.

    • +1

You can setup your phone only to connect to the 3G. So didn't really make any differences.

  • -6

Comments made about Vaya are completely unfounded. Made by someone who has NEVER been with Vaya. Totally unqualified blabber mouth!
I have been with Vaya for several years as have my brother, all his family and many of our friends too. We have NEVER EVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH VAYA! By far the best plans, excellent coverage and best value. Friendly service too.
The Vaya $18 power plan which comes with $650 call value PLUS UNLIMITED SMS with 1.5GB of 4G data absolutely KILLS this promoted TPG plan. Vaya use the Optus 4G service. Far better than TPG/Vodafone.
Dont listen to loud mouthed idiots who have no idea. Listen to actual users of the service.
But unfortunately you cant please everyone. And many people rush in and dont read all the details/conditions/communications and then make illegitimate complaints. And there are many of those too! Not just for Vaya but also for all the other mobile service providers.
If you are going to compare plans then do it properly without unqualified opinions and comments. Any intelligent and well informed person will come to the same conclusion as me, my familly and our friends…you can't beat the Vaya $18 plan.
But if you do need more I would suggest Lebara's National Plan with Unlimited national calls/SMS with 2.5GB data at only $29.90 per 30 days.

    • +2

Humility goes a long way my friend.

I'm happy you have enjoyed good service with them but the overall consenus i.e. complaints made prove otherwise. I have been with Vaya 3yrs myself. The first 2 monnths were a nightmare but then everything worked perfectly with good reception for about 2yrs BUT everything changed this year… Once I have used my Power Plans data they automatically disconnect my service wihout notice, even though I have four bolt ons on my account! This has happened on about 6 individual months this year & always given a different response.
Also the bolt ons have risen from $7 > $10!
Suffice to say I am leaving next month. Worst customer service I have ever experienced.

      • Had the exact same thing happen to me…

        Try Vodafone, are pretty decent.

      • As I mentioned before the people who have problems will make the most noise whereas those who don't will largely be quiet. Online reviews and forums are generally more skewed towards the negative as it is mainly those with bad experiences who want to vent about that and fair enough too.

Look up even the most highly rated restaurants and there will be some online reviews making them sound dreadful. And before anyone says it I am not likening Vaya to top end fine dining, but you get my point. The dissatisfied make far more noise. If you are quietly satisfied with your service you are unlikely to be searching for a forum to tell everybody about it. If they were that bad they would be out of business by now.

While the person above sounds suspiciously like a Vaya rep, there are many on here, including me, who have been very happy with Vaya. 3 of us in my family on the $18 plan with no problems. I am coming up to two years with them. I keep within my data but my daughter has gone over a couple of times and the expected $10 charge was applied. No cut off, no problem, apart from me moaning at her for the money she was costing me. The extra data increasing from $7 to $10 for 1GB is hardly a problem - that's pretty standard across many providers and avoids the dreaded per MB charge that is the alternative to this approach. You are probably on the wrong plan if you regularly go over anyway.

Anyway, the purpose of this post is to provide some balance as some of us are very happy with Vaya and believe it offers great value - the same service cost me three times as much with Optus before I moved to Vaya - exactly the same service - no difference in reception. Reading some of the views here you would think that Vaya will clean out your bank account and set fire to your house if you sign up with them. They won't and there is every chance you will be satisfied with what they offer. Still the best value 4G plan around. If you don't like them and are on the no contract option you can simply walk away.

I don't have experience with TPG but have seen plenty of online moaning about their customer service too.

    • They counted my data weird - I turned off my phone while sleeping and they still logged significant data usage. 1.5gb felt more like 100mb

      • They did have a spell where they had problems with sending data use warnings incorrectly, but that was short lived. I moved from a 1.5gb plan with Optus to the same with Vaya and my usage has stayed pretty much the same.

  • Is that 2 min standard call $2.38 means min $2.38 per call?

    • $0.99/min +40c flagfall. Calls billed per min.

The 2 min call is an example of the cost under this scheme. Not that all calls will be $2.38.

Pretty standard plan terminology across all carriers.

  • +6

TPG have confirmed that if you had international calls on your old plan, then when you get invited to the new plan it will also have international calls.

    http://whrl.pl/RepOtD

    • Did they say any discount with existing Internet customer?

    • That`s all I wanted to hear! :D

    • THANK. YOU. <3

  • Not sure people noted this or not …

    Calls to Standard Australian Numbers

    99¢ per minute + 40¢ flagfall

    Calls to 13/1300 Numbers

    99¢ per minute + 40¢ flagfall

    SMS to Standard Australian Mobiles

25.3¢ per message (max 160 characters

    • Already in the OP, thanks :)

They're the high standard rates you get when telcos give you this funny money credit for calls.

  • With Boost, if you recharge early, do you lose the unused portion of your credit? That's what the fine print seems to imply. Pretty dodgy. Not only does nothing roll over, you lose whatever you had when you recharge..

I'm thinking of waiting till Coles does the Amaysim recharge discounts when you buy a $2 sim pack and then getting a whole year's supply.

    • If you recharge early, you will loose the unused portion. I too was in the same boat as you. decided to recharge 1 day before the due date and…….lost that day.

I have now setup EZYPAY, i think its called. Auto recharges for me.

      Good luck,

  • I'm impressed with Vodafone at least, I danced around between Optus and Vodafone (and resellers) before finally moving to Telstra (reseller - Telechoice) in 2013 as I got fed up with having no coverage in door and only 1-2 bars outdoor (40min north of Brisbane). Telstra is full bars in and out.

I bought a $2 vodafone sim to see if the coverage has improved and my god it has, I get two bars indoors and three, even four at times outdoors.

I moved my wife to Optus as she wanted a S5 and they had a good deal. My god, coverage is still shit and the same as when we moved here back in 2009. There are two Optus towers reasonably close by but the Optus tech said mine connects to one 12km as the others are pointed in the wrong direction. They did promise that coverage would improve next year though. Wifitalk app is buggy and rubbish, the Home Zone is great….when it works.

I've been on Vaya for half a year. No problems whatsoever. Reception is reliable as well. Don't know what problems other people are experiencing but I have an iPhone on $24/month plan.

  • Im looking for an elcheapo plan for my wife. Anyone had experience with https://www.thinkmobile.com.au/plans/swift-plans/ ?
    $12 month seems good.

  • I've been with TPG mobile for almost three years, i also got my mum to join up.

No issues, great company, prices and service.

  • I received a text from TPG at midday regarding email invitations to switch to their 'incredible offers'. Did anyone else get this message and/or the email?

    • +1

got it today too. Text first and then the email

      • Should've added that I never got my email. Did they send it to your 'TPG post office'? or your personal email address?

        • Strange. I got it in my personal email. check your junk or folder rules maybe? my TPG emails goes to its own folder and I missed emails a few times in the past when I wasn't keeping an eye on it.

        • @rexii2300: No email from TPG. Checked and checked again. I might just need to wait.

        • @abadacus: same to me, received text no email yet

        • @ishe: I called TPG 2 weeks ago regarding this, they told me that looking on the system, it said that an email had already been sent out. They also said that they would send out another within one week but I still haven't received any sort of notification.

Got offered to move to Vodafone from my exisiting tpg $550 international credit except they offered me 1.5GB instead of 1GB. I'm very happy with it

    • ah so you were at $16.99 (discounted plan due to using tpg adsl), 1gb and $550?
thats good news. im happy with 1.5gb !

      • $19.99 I'm paying now. No other tpg bundle such as adsl.
With 1GB I had to use it wisely. 1.5gb is perfect normally on wifi at work/home

    • I just got the same offer but for $16.99. Maybe because I have adsl account with them. waiting for my second sim card which is on pay as you go ($1 monthly fess with 500mb) not sure how they will handle it.

  • I've been offered this deal from TPG.

    $550 Included Value
Standard AU & International Calls & Text
    Unlimited Calls
to TPG Mobile, Home Phone and Voicemail
    1.5GB Included Data
    Excess Data: 10¢ per MB
    4G Coverage
    (LTE 1800/850 MHz)
$16.99 per month AND 2 MONTHS’ RECURRING CHARGES ON US. What a bargain haha.

    • Received the same email. Why the downvote?

    • Got this, too :). So do we just wait for the SIM card to arrive or we have to do something beforehand?
