Just gave them a call - so this obviously wouldn't apply to existing cardholders. They said the only way is to close the account and then reapply… meh :P

    • Thanks, I still haven't got the points from last time so I'll have to give this one a miss.

  • +1

what's the income level for this card?

  • -2

LOL. $30 extra fee for Frequent Flyer.

That's going to kill off the program! Given a point is worth about 0.000000001c

(fee is waived first year. Qantas Frequent Flyer overestimates their own worth)

    • Even after the appalling inflation recently, 40k points is still worth nearly $250 in gift vouchers. But worth a third of a one way business class flight to Europe. Worth the trouble.

      • -1

40k points is a once off.

You will get hit $60/yr for being on the FF program if I read correctly.

$60/yr for a program where you must spend buttloads to earn a few dollars. Where's the value in that?

        • Did you come down with the last shower?

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows:

          Eh?

          Sorry, I meant $30/yr.

It's in the post! "By applying via this page you will be opted in to Qantas Frequent Flyer Direct. An annual opt-in fee …$30… applies."

          @justtoreply:
It's clear you don't understand what we're about here. Open account, take points, close account, rinse and repeat. Plenty of value in doing that (I've made about 350k bonus points in the past 18 months alone - many have done even better).

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows:

It's clear you don't understand that my first comment never discussed opening/closing accounts at all.

My comment discussed the concept of FF program charging an annual fee, and how ludicrous that was because earning FF points with purchases offers such a trivial reward. Which is true. So stop trying to change my point into something that it wasn't and then arguing against it.

With respect to your last post - I have no issue with that whatsoever.

        • @justtoreply: I just don't see why you're decrying this as not a deal when clearly it is, so long as the user is happy to open and cancel.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows:

          Mate, I'm not.

I'm saying the FF program, at $30/yr, is nuts.
This post, as a deal, is absolutely fine.

The regular FF program and this deal are two different things. And I was talking about the regular FF program.

        • @justtoreply: No arguments about CBA's FF cards - they're worse across the board than any of their competitors, and apparently won't waive fees like most other banks will.

        • +2

Alright guys no need to bicker, let's reserve our energy for when we have to deal with CommBank…
          Oh gawd I'm having flashbacks.

    • FYI that yearly FF fee must be part of the $249 charge (and refund) I got as I have not seen it appear on my account.

      • Funnily enough, the $30 fee just appeared on my account. They must have been watching OzBargain
        :-)

        • And just got it refunded on 30 Nov. So basically I have not been charged for ANY sort of CC fee by CBA.

  • thanks, applied

  • Thanks OP. Applied.

  • will it effect my credit history if i cancel it within one year?

    • No. But applying will.

  • Forgot to mention that there are additional benefits of those AmEx connect deals that crop up every so often. That alone might be a good reason to apply for a new CC.

Also, as an FYI for those who are applying, pleas make sure you know your Passport, Drivers Licence and/or Medicare details etc as well as have access to things like payslips etc to substantiate your income. This will be required AFTER you have spend time entering in all your personal details.

    • +1 on top of that I was even asked to bring in utility bill and tax assessment notice last time

  • +1

what is the minimum income requirement?

    • +1

I asked them online and they said no minimum income for this card.

      • +1

thanks - I just passed the eligibility requirements .. applying now!

  • How easy is it to cancel a credit card? Is it like cancelling a gym membership?

    • I sent a proforma letter I found online to ANZ and they cancelled it within a few weeks.

    • +1

I recently cancelled a NAB card - it was just a matter of phoning up (within business hours…) and asking to cancel my card. Process took about 10-15 minutes, all completed over the phone, they didn't try to stop me or anything.

    • I cancelled this card two weeks ago (and just resigned up for this). Cancelling was easy, they offered me an extra 5,000 points to stay for an extra 2 months, lucky I cancelled anyway.

      • Should've taken the points and then cancelled later

        • +1

yes and no, I have a habit of forgetting things, what they're relying on. So when i'm through to someone and ready to cancel I do it.

  • +1

Is there a minimum credit limit?

    • Was 6K last time, probably same

    • +1

Can confirm it's the same this time 6k minimum.

      • Actually its been dropped 5k min. Spoke to CSR at CBA.

  • My application was declined. Any thoughts why was it so?

    • +1

Well you haven't really provided much information/background as to what your situation is, so you're not making it very easy..

      But generally:

      • Too many other credit applications within a short period of time. Note that 12/24 month phone plans, electricity/gas, Internet, other credit card applications and applications for home loans/personal loans would count.
      • Insufficient salary/other expenses too high
      • Your current credit limit is too high and you have "maxed it out"
      • I didn't provide information because I really don't know what to provide as I don't know the criteria (sorry I'm very new in this credit card thing).

        • Salary might not be relevant as there is no minimum income requirement. But anyway, I'm earning in the range 70-100k.
        • I do have another credit card with ANZ with 15,000$ credit limit. I'm not very sure how it works in Australia but previously in other country I used to live (Singapore), I had like 10 cards with 15,000$ limit each.
        • My expense/salary is about 60%
        • I think time lived at your current address can be an important criterion. Basically, if you have moved around then they may view you as a riskier prospect. I guess they think they could have a harder time tracking you down if you stop paying them.

        • @eagle86: I don't think time lived at current address is an issue. I am living in my current address from 2 months back only and my salary, expenses all are similar to huubang. Even I have another Amex card with 9k limit. Still my application got approved.

  • +1

I got decision pending n they are asking payslips so I have uploaded that information…

  • +1

Please note that some people ,including me, are still waiting for the annual fee and bonus Qantas points from the previous promotion.

Same here, have just phoned them this morning to chase up

    • same here. unbelievable! applied 4 months ago and been told still have to wait another month to get the money back! i almost forgot the refund matter til my partner asked me the other day. this is absolutely unacceptable.

  • My application is approved

  • +2

Be aware CBA are VERY slow to post the fee refund and points! I'm still waiting for mine from the previous card and that was opened in May! They're now telling me it'll be November at the earliest…

    • same here. applied in June

      • Finally got my refund and points after lodging an FOS complaint!

      • Same.. Will ring them next week.. Lazy buggers

  • Can I apply Cc for my wife and claim on my frequent flyer account ???

    • +1

No. But you can easily enough transfer from her account to yours. And opening an account is free for anybody that bothers googling it.

      • thanks

  • I've heard people can sometimes continue getting their feed wavered if you say you'll cancel your card otherwise. Anyone done this with CBA or do they not care?

  • Anyone tried canceling their current Platinum Awards and then re-signing?

    • Haven't done yet but that's the plan as I cannot see anything in T&Cs that you must be a new customer or not have had this card previously for X months.

I'll cancel my card in the next week or so, get closing statement early next month and then apply via link a couple of weeks after that. Unless I'm missing something crucial I feel I am eligible for the points.

  • Got my cards today - no mention in the paperwork about the 40,000 points or the fee refunds - is this normal ?

    • +1

I just mine in the mail. Applied on 9 October and got on 15 Oct. Reasonably fast. I did not even know if I was approved or not.

Not mentioning the 40k and fee refunds is pretty normal. Those details will be in your account somewhere. The system that generates these cards and sends out the letter is not sophisticated (possibly by design) enough to provide more then your basic address details on the template.

I still don't know what my limit is so I guess I'll have to call or log in.

      • Mine is approved. I applied the same date as you but have not received the cards yet.
Once you login to the credit card section on NetBank, it will show what your credit limit is.

    • Same here, no mention of the 40k or fee refunds. Even online on the commbank awards I cant seem to find anything mentioning Qantas or the deal :S

    • Same! Also I don't think it asked for my Qantas FF number when I signed up. Am I supposed to call up or something to supply this?

  • Got mine mid week. They gave me a default 9k limit. Again no mention of any fees being waved or FF bonus points. Makes me nervous :/

  • we did the previous one from the other deal, was a bit of a hassle but took about 3 months for the 40K points and annual fee waiver to go through.

We cancelled about a month ago and will jump on this deal again.

I would say we will likely see points coming through in January's statement.

  • I was searching everywhere for the minimum income required for this card, but couldn't find it on the CommBank website. According to this (http://www.creditcardfinder.com.au/commonwealth-bank-platinu…), there is no minimum income.

  • Can we close our current credit card and join again immediately and still be eligible for this deal?

  • +2

Applied for this one, they gave me a gold card instead. Not sure if I will still get the 40K points? Does anyone know? I called them up and the girl said they would but somehow i'm not convinced

    • +1

Wow, didnt think they would just send a Gold card to someone and NOT give them the points. did you note the girl's name and time/date of conversation for your records? Also ask her (if you call back) to note that in your records.

    • I got a Gold card too, I just called them and was told the offer only applies to Platinum, not Gold…

      • Wow they gave you a card that you didn't apply for, and that totally misses the point of the promotion?!

        • I called the awards line when I got the card, got transferred to the cards team who told me the promotion was only for platinum members.

Just to double check I've sent a message from Netbank and they're investigating whether or not I'm eligible for the promotion.

    • +1

Signed Mrs muncan up for the Platinum card deal, but they offered the Awards card instead (step down from Gold). Went in to a branch to confirm whether she'd still be eligible for the 40k points and annual fee refund ($59) and after 30 minutes of fretting around they confirmed yes, still eligible for both as long as she meets the minimum spend in the promotion period.
That said, I still haven't received the 40k points for the card I applied for in May - so we've set our expectations to zero.

      • +3

Spoke too soon - got my 40k points yesterday (only 4 months and 17 days after spending $500)

      • A little status update - Mrs muncan has received two letters from CommBank asking her to upload the details that she has a) already provided to a branch on 23/10/15, and b) uploaded another copy on 6/11/15. Now she's uploaded a third copy of the same documents on 1/12/15. I'm expecting she'll get the same letter again in a few more weeks asking her to provide the same documents again.
It's already been 46 days since applying for the card (on 14/10/15), and the 90 day countdown to receive the points/refund hasn't even started!
Meanwhile, we're prepared to play their silly game of 'upload your documents for an invitation to do so again' for as long as they remain in business.

        • Call them. I had the same problem.

They needed identification documents for my supplementary card holder… I didn't want to proceed with supplementary card application, so I called them, and they pushed it through.

  • Did anyone else get a "Platinum Awards" card in the mail?
No mention of QFF in the literature or on the card.

    • +1

Got a Platinum Awards card. I called up the people and apparently we are auto joined to the QFF programme if we entered all the details on application.

  • Has anyone received the "Congratulations" e-mail after spending $500?

    • I did not even think there would be one. I have spent about $5000 so far in the last month of usage.

  • Did anyone remember fill in QFF number in the form ? Or we need to call them to opt in ?

    • How and when will I be opted-in to Qantas Frequent Flyer Direct?

If you are already a Qantas Frequent Flyer member, there is no action for you to take.

If you are not yet a member of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program you will first need to join via www.qantas.com.au/joinffcba.

For existing Qantas Frequent Flyer members or recently joined, we will opt you in to Qantas Frequent Flyer Direct within 90 days of card approval.

      • Cheers

  • Notice to anyone else wanting to cancel before renewal.

I called up today to cancel the card and the lady on the phone kept asking why and offered me an extra 10,000 points to keep the card no strings attached.

Told me it will take about 4 weeks to receive points so will wait until these land now and cancel before my renewal in may 2016.

    • Just a heads up - make sure you wait until the points appear in your QFF account before you cancel the card!
I did the same thing with a Virgin Money card, and cancelled it the day my billing cycle reset and they refused the give me the points! I was livid, but couldn't be bothered trying to get them to fix it up, as it would've been a huge hassle!

  • Hi,

Just want to share about this CBA Amex deal. Applied and got the combo cards around mid July. Spent $500 as per requirement and paid the annual fee $249 around end of July. I got refunded around mid August as well as CBA Award points 80K. Still earning a good point up to now. Hoping to get another surprise again :). FYI, I am really using it for my monthly expenses. The only point I could see about the value of it is to get $500 Gift card once you accumulating up to 93K points. Not sure about the cancellation so far. I think it would be good to get an extra 50K points deal as a counter when we request to cancel the card???

  • My experience is that on 2 Nov 2015 I got charged $249 for the CBA fees and on 6 Nov I was credited it back. Not sure what other peoples experiences were but I ahve definitely spent over $500 on this card (on top of the $249).

    • Same here, I got charged the annual fee on 04 Nov 2015 and got a annual fee credit on the 06 Nov 2015 (spent $500 well before the 2nd).

  • so it says on their website:

0 – 60,000 points —- 1.25 Qantas Points per $1 of eligible spend. DOes anyone know if the 40k bonus is included in the 60k points?

  • got charged the the $249 fee on the 11th November, time to wait 90 days to get it credited back.

    • If you have already spent $500 then wait time is about a week according to some of our experiences.

    • I was charged on 6th and got refunded in less than a week. I haven't even spent $200 yet.

    • I notice there was a $30 qantas frequent flyer fee as well?
      "QANTAS FF DIRECT FEE"

      • As per OP:

By applying via this page you will be opted in to Qantas Frequent Flyer Direct. An annual opt-in fee (currently $10, $30 from 2 November 2015) applies. This will be refunded for the first year within 90 days of card approval. For each subsequent year the then current Qantas Frequent Flyer Direct annual opt-in fee will apply.

  • how do i check my credit card balance? how do i check if I've opted in for qantas ff? how do i check where they have deducted 249 credit card fee (credit card account not showing on netbank)? Can i earn the 40k point by spending $250 in the mastercard and $250 in amex card (mixed use)?

    • how do i check my credit card balance?

      Netbank

how do i check if I've opted in for qantas ff?

It's done automatically. If they can't find your FF number they will call you

how do i check where they have deducted 249 credit card fee

      Netbank

credit card account not showing on netbank

Have you activated your card? I activated using netbank app from the cards section

Can i earn the 40k point by spending $250 in the mastercard and $250 in amex card (mixed use)?

There's nothing in T&C that states you need to spend $250 on each card. Also they both have a single account in netbank.

  • I applied recently and received a gold card - speaking to them on the phone they said the card you get depends on what credit limit you are eligible for and you need to qualify for a limit of $8000 to get the platinum off the bat.

However you are still eligible for the points as long as you /apply/ for the platinum card.

  • Just had a look at the credit card statement from a few days ago, and I've been rewarded with the 40,000 FF points! Wasn't expecting it so soon.
