Correct. Twitter also does the trick. It works for any big company with a Twitter account. They do not like seeing negative posts going unanswered.

        • +4

LOL. Maybe you should draft messages for Dodo customers. I was on their page recently for a competition. A long list of people were saying keep the car - just give me internet that works.

    • Same here! I met the criteria in early May.

    • I got mine eventually, takes awhile!

    • +2

Open a dispute with the FOS (www.fos.org.au), but only after you can show you've already complained to CBA. FOS disputes get resolved quickly because the company you are arguing with pays for the dispute resolution process, which is how the FOS is funded - same as the TIO in the telco industry. Works wonders. I think FOS only steps in 45 days after you first raise the issue with the bank though.

    • Likewise. I am nearly at 90 days for the $1000 of purchases that needed to be made also. Hoping it'll come through on day 90/91.

    • Mine came through no worries

I think jv only upvoted this comment because some of it was bolded.

      • Yay an up vote from JV :)

I did over-bold it, to emphasise my previous frustrations! :)

    • What if I still haven't cancelled my card from the last CommBank offer. Presumably I can cancel it today and then apply for this offer by 5 December?

      • Did anyone find out yet whether this was definitely the case?

  • Thanks OP!

  • Guess its time to upgrade from my normal CBA awards card =D

  • CBA recently sent me a Platinum debit card pointing out that it had loads of other benefits, I've started using it but haven't realized a single benefit over my old one lol ;)

    • +1

Everyone thinks its a credit card. MSY have tried to charge me extra every single time.

      • oh yeah, wonder why :-O

    • The only benefit is to them. It costs merchants more to accept "platinum" cards over normal credit cards. Yes, your debit card still occurs the associated Mastercard processing fees…

But I'm still waiting for my 40k from the last deal?

    • +1

Same.. Been about 4 months and nothing. They said it can take up to 90 days from the end of the offer period.. So should be a few weeks away.. (From memory)

I've actually made this card my regular card since the last deal, but is anyone game enough to cancel it and re-apply? "Should be valid" doesn't feel reassuring to me..

    • Thinking about the same thing. Would have cancelled already, but I have a scheduled trip overseas so kept it for insurance.

  • +1

    Thanks OP, great post.

  • +3

How much are the points worth in money term?

    • Costs 37300 points to get back $250 myer gift card and 35000 points for david jones egift card at the qantas store. They don't don't offer prepaid cards as an award unfortunately.

    • +2

Using them for business class flights makes them worth the most (1-2c each). Using them for gift cards they are only worth about 0.6c

      • +4

        But what if:

        • You don't actually value the business class tickets at the price they're being sold for? i.e. If you were to pay cash, would you pay for it?
        • You don't fly often (or at all)
        • A revenue ticket on the day you wish to fly is
          Economy Class: $100/8000 points
          Business Class: $1000/16000 points
If you had the options above presented to you, and you had either the option of paying cash or points, what would you do?
You probably wouldn't pay $1000 for business class, so you can't value the 16000 points at $1000.
You can't value it at 10x the value of economy class because you weren't planning to buy it anyway.
If it was $200 for business class and you would have bought at that price, then maybe you could value it in such a way.
Another consideration - are you just trying to get from A to B for the cheapest price? If so, the business class consideration is scrapped completely.

It's like buying a Ferrari for $100k and saying "I saved $150k!". If you weren't planning to buy it in the first place you've just spent to save money.

That's why it's easier to value gift cards, because a $250 Coles/Woolies gift cards is almost guaranteed to be used used up by you or me or anyone else close enough to a Coles/Woolies. So it's $250 regardless.

        • Agree that 40,000 QFF is approximately $250 in value. Anecdotally, when looking up the Apple watch in the Qantas store (https://store.qantas.com/Catalogue.a2?Page=ViewProduct&Produ…) this costs $579 RRP (or 93,300 QFF points).

Working out that maths in this case means that 40,000 points is equal to $248.17.

Personally I use my points to get my MEL-LHR retuen flights each year as a typical $2,200 high season exonomy ticket will cost me 128,000 points and about $1,000 in taxes. The breakeven for me would be a return MEL-LHR for AU$1,794 (assuming $1,000 taxes again) so any ticket price above that means my points are working 'harder' then the gift card rate.

How you use your points is your perogative but $250 for 40,000 is a good baseline to use.

      • +4

Say you used points for a business class flight to Sydney. You're on the plane for 1-2 hours and you get good food and service. But then it's over.

Alternatively you could've got a $70 flight to Sydney on Tiger and redeemed your points for $100s worth of gift cards to spend on things you need.

I'm not about to use my points for a business class flight anytime soon. I agree with illumination.

        • +1

Same here. Tiger, Air Asia, Cebu pacific are my carriers of choice. Load the tablet with movies and games (which by the way I got from Qantas points at David Jones), prepare some small snacks, maybe order a $5 meal if its a long flight and thats all I need. All points I use for Wish gift cards which are good for Woolies, BWS, Dan Murphy`s and Big W buying stuff I would have bought anyway like food and Opal recharges. When I exhaust all points I am back to Aldi and Indian and Chines groceries with small purchases at Woolies or Coles only when they have a very good deal again for items I would buy anyway like half price and two for one. Business class is useless for me, unless it is free.

        • +3

I am not saying there is no value in Business Class and I am not saying people should not pay extra for it just because once the flight is over, it's over (because by the same logic, there's no value in going to a musical or a theme park either).

I just mean that it's important to not make blanket statements such as "use it business class! it's better value!"

It really depends on the individual and their flying habits + desires.

        • +1

          @illumination:
Well sure, for example if I am badly wanting to relocate overseas and I have a third round interview overseas for a job which is amazing I might see value in being able to sleep more comfortably in business class. But on holidays I see no point as I`m not in a hurry nor is not sleeping enough a problem. That value has to come from a very real need for me, not only from general 'it is more comfortable', 'spoil yourself', 'you only live once', has to add real value fit for purpose.

        • @noskich: I completely agree

And as I've read somewhere on here before, having a strong preference for premium classes of travel seems to be very un-Ozbargain like..
Surely you'll just be like, I wanna get from A to B…
and then with the $500-5000 that you saved from not flying business class, you could (if you wanted to) now spend it on a 5 Star hotel for several nights instead of some cheapo motel!

If you're like me you'll probably still pick, maybe not a motel, but cheaper accommodation by using the same logic of "I want to get from A to B as cheap as possible". In this case it's "I want to sleep in a bed that's comfy enough for the cheapest price possible". Obviously other considerations come into play here, such as safety, location, convenience..

    • points for me : say return trip from Sydney to Melbourne Q Business Class - which can range from $500 - 800 depending upon your timing and travel plans.

just applied - though I'll need to lower the credit limit that they initially gave me (11,000 - that's FAR TOO MUCH) - in any case, just get the points and close account soon after.

    • $1 = 150 to 160 QFF points.

39,000 QFF points = $250 Woolworths WISH eGift Card

      • Hmm… so about $250 worth for a hit on your credit file. May I know those who constantly took up these reward deals, how many credit enquiries have you had in a year and how does it impact your credit file?

Just really didn't want to ruin the credit history in case I need a big loan later.

          Your score: 561
OKAY. This score indicates moderate risk to many lenders. They might expect a proportion of people in this category to have serious problems repaying credit.

Actually not all my enquiries have been listed (I had 6 Westpac cards, and Woolworths isn't listed).

Don't forget to cancel your card(s) when you receive the bonus points!

        • @muncan:

Thanks muncan, wow very informative. So with this kind of score and this kind of enquiry did you still get approved by NAB in August? Or did you apply for this CBA deal and got it?

        • +1

@wildstone: I've been sitting on 561 for a long time now. Probably since I cleaned up Westpac. The only card I've been knocked back for was the AMEX 100k points, but was approved for NAB and Woolies soon after. I reckon* all lenders have their own criteria, and credit score is considered differently by each.

        • @griftr: I can't confirm nor deny.

      • i just realised they increased the points required for gift cards!! damn it.

WW egfitcards are now 42,300 for $250!! Earlier this year I calculated that 50K points = $350 in vouchers. I'm sure it was something like 37,500 for $250 back in may.

  • +1

I got my refund of fees 7 days after paying them.
and got my points after the 3rd month I think it was..

Still trying to work out if I convert the CBA points to QFF or get a $550 Flight centre voucher…
saving for 2nd Buisness RTW ticket, so 40k points would be a good chunk into next ticket. But $550 at flight centre I think has better short term value

    • Can you give some more information on this?
By applying and getting this card, can one get $550 Flight Centre voucher?

      • +1

Im not sure, But I applied the previous deal, And they didnt give me 40,000 qqf points they gave me i think it was 60,000 CBA rewards points, which could be converted to anything in there store Or alternatively a 550$ FC voucher or $400 cash or Hotel VOuchers or Prepaid Visa card with around $500

1 could only assume it would be the same but I dunno

  • +1

Nice one. Time to apply for another CC. Just in time to close my ANZ platinum and get a new one.

  • No love for new diamond customers?
Im just in the process of signing into a home loan with cba and as part of their package one credit card will be fee free.
Is it worth it to apply for both?
Surely it isn't work using my one "fee free" credit card on a platinum instead of diamond just for QFF points?

  • +3

Applied last time for platinum card but without telling me CBA sent me the gold card instead n i cancelled straight away…waste of time

    • You dunce :) they sill honour the promo i.e 40k points.

  • Anything deep within the terms stopping us from cancelling within the first year?

  • +1

Sigh..I only just cancelled my old Commonwealth bank credit card yesterday…time to get a new one back :)

  • Got this card last time this offer was up. Was a bit of a pain getting my points and refunded fees.
You must ring them up after getting your card to link your qantas number to your account.
Just got my qantas points now so took about 4 months

  • +1

can we cancel now and immediately apply for a new one?

  • +1

This a Visa card or a combo visa Amex card like the ANZ deal?

    • Its a combo (Master Card + Amex).

  • Eligible purchases seem to be anything other than balance transfers and ATO payments from what I could see :)

  • Visa and Amex combo

    • Just to clarify it is a CommBank Awards Platinum MASTERCARD and CommBank Awards American Express Platinum Card.

      Not a Visa.

  • If you plan to take up this offer then do it to get the 40k points then cancel within the first year as the roi beyond that is inferior to many other rewards cards. Citi Visa Gold Business being just one .. 😊 .. !!

  • Has anyone here used these points on jetstar flights too? Would the flights turn out to be substantially cheap if you redeem lets say a normal sydney to Goldcoast flight? I couldnt sample this as I don't have enough qff points to check the fare.

  • Hi Guys,

I was also waiting for the points, but realised they didnt deposited it into my Qantas account but left it as rewards points which is actually the same thing. For those still awaiting their points, maybe just check if its sitting in your rewards account? then you can convert it at your own leisure.

    • Can you do that now?

I remember about 5 years ago you could convert the CBA awards points into QFF anytime, but they removed that so that you need to have auto xfer into QFF. Once they are CBA Award points that's all you can use them as.

  • +1

how much is 40K points roughly worth?

    • Depends on how you use it. If you just get gift vouchers, it's worth about $270-280 from memory. If you buy flights in economy, it's not great value (the taxes and fuel surcharge are high), but if you use for upgrades or business/first purchases, it's worth a lot (about a third of a one-way business class trip to Europe).

Basically, it's worth progressively more as your balance grows.

      • +2

Qantas points dropped in value lately for the gift cards. One used to be able to obtain $100 Wish gift card for 15K points, now it`s 16.4K points. Which is why you should ideally convert the points as soon as you get them as their exchange rate keeps dropping.

        • I think you're correct but I notice that a Super Cheap Auto $100 card is 14,650 points. Same with Harvey Norman, BCF and Rebel Sport.

        • +1

          Pricks they are.

        • +1

          @inherentchoice:
Correct, but does not help me much as I don`t drive and right now have no need for any new gadgets or clothes. While I need to buy food and recharge Opal card weekly in Woolies… I checked again and to be precise $100 Wish gift card is now 16,250 Qantas points.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Correct, you are!

        • @Porco Rosso:

Dropped once again for Wish gift card to 17,570

  • +1

be honest, Commbank is the worst experience I had in Credit Card application.

I have applied a card and it was shown on My Commbank online as a successful application, and then it is just dead…

no one is sending me any new card and no one is contacting me, I tried to email them a few times, but some one just replied saying we will follow up and then again it is dead…

I tried to call, which I have been forwarded to India….(or some country near that) and I can't understand a word that guy is speaking….

    SO i give up ….

  • A generic question….

Seems signing up to these cards for the ponts then cancelling is the done thing on OzB. How long does the hit on your credit history hang around after you cancel it in say 6 months? Is it as soon as the cards cancelled? Or is there some sort of time frame for your credit to come back up slowly?

EDIT: Also, the $249 fee is charged at the start right? So you have to pay that off early then it's only refunded 3 months later? On top of that you have to spend $500 correct. So effectively you have to spend $749 in total and you get refunded the $249?

    • +2

I don't think a cancellation shows on your credit history. The credit history generally only shows the inquiries made by financial institutions/lenders and any credit defaults reported.

      • Ah ok….and they stay on there forever? I mean the score is supposed to be a sort of "current lendability" score right? So if theres credit inquiries from 5 years ago is that taken in to account in the score?

        Just curious how it works.

    • +1

Obviously you should just be spending the $500 on things you would ordinarily have been paying for before you obtained the card. eg. Groceries, utilities etc.

    • Also interested in knowing if we ultimately have to spend $749 while we wait to get the $249 fee refunded?

      • You would have to unless you want to incur interest on the $249. That was my thinking anyway.

    • +6

I've done a few of these CC deals the past year and my credit score is pretty crap as a result. Just under 600. So i got my full credit report for free to see what damage I had done. (everyone's entitled to 1 free report per year, or another one if your application gets rejected)

The full report shows all your applications for credit cards in the past 5 years. This includes credit cards, loans, and even services like Energy Australia.

The full report also shows what credit cards you currently have open.

It does not show what CC you opened and subsequently closed. To be clear, your application is reported, but there's no section, yet, that says "card opened 2014, closed 2015". It also doesn't specifically say if your application is rejected.

Although they are starting to retain new information (e.g whether you pay on time, open & close dates of CCs) Veda doesn't include this info in the report yet.

If you default on payments for bills/CCs that will also appear on your account.

TBH I found the report to be… meaningless and was quite disappointed. I mean, in the past 3 years I've gotten a mortgage, few years later refinanced that mortgage (for a better deal), and opened 6-7 credit cards. That's a decent amount of activity and so i expected a lot of info… instead the report was pretty empty. And from that I think that any institution that places a lot of emphasis on the report is stupid. Based on my report it looks like im desperate for credit (hence constant applications) .. instead i'm financially savvy, use CCs to save money and make money, never missed a bill in my life and have paid my closing balance off in full every month for the last decade.

All in all I say don't worry too much about having "a hit" on your file every now and then. Although I would caution against being a serial FF chaser (like some of us) unless you know what you're doing.

      • Out of curiosity, which service did you use to find out your credit score? Thanks!
