Free Lunch - Think.Eat.Save 2015 by OzHarvest (27 Jul 2015) [Various Locations]

690

Back again this year.

Organised by OzHarvest in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the campaign aims to raise awareness about the amount of food that gets scrapped around the world, and to introduce more sustainable ways of expending our natural resources. The event hopes to help reduce the $10 billion that goes into food disposal each year while 2 million people are still reliant on food relief, and cut the rate of food loss in half by 2050.

So join distinguished chefs, politicians and celebrities in this great cause, and pick up a great meal that you won’t want to waste!

This year, the event will be held in the following locations on Monday, 27 July 2015, between 11.30am and 2.30pm:

  • Melbourne
  • Newcastle
  • Adelaide
  • Sydney
  • Brisbane
  • Gold Coast
  • Canberra
  • Perth
  • Port Macquarie

ozbargainers do not need this. There are heaps of homeless people living in the cold every night this winter, they should be the ones getting this food.

Tell or print out the or tell them about it as you walk pass them.

    • +11

Thousands of members of the public are invited to a free and delicious hot lunch all created from produce that would have ended up as landfill across the nation.

This is for the general public. It would be great if the homeless could also get a feed out of it, but it's not just for them.

This is a PR event to raise awareness of the problem of food waste (& prosumably also OzHarvest) - which is aimed at those who has the mean and produce most of the waste, rather than being a community kitchen for the underpriviledged.

      • +5

Yeah I dunno.. I thought it's common sense not to waste food. Guess it's the way I was brought up.

I guess for the entitled people such as Bronwyn Bishop they dont really care or have thought about it.

I'll prolly get downvoted coz wtf it's common sense not to waste food, such as eating chicken feet etc…

        • +2

It's also awareness for OzHarvest, which btw is an awesome organization. I only recently learned of them through the Uber deal they did. For every dollar they raised through there (it was $12 per meal), they can deliver 2 meals.
So I think this event raising awareness for OzHarvest is great.

        • +5

I don't think it's common sense anymore. The amount of half eaten plates I see everyday is very sad especially when I see kids getting away with it.

Re chicken feet, my wife always orders it at yum cha. I can't stand it.

        • +12

My understanding is that it's not so much about personal food waste, as it is corporate food waste.
I packed shelves at Woolies during my high school years, and the amount of baked goods, fruit and veg and expired perishables that got tossed of a day would blow your mind. We'd literally fill skips (plural) up some days.
As I understand it, the problem is with litigation the way it is, if they donated the day old bread leftovers, and someone got sick off it Woolies would be culpable.

        • @ToastySteve:
That's why we need to change legislation - whats better starving to death/throwing out good food OR getting sick from eating that food/which may be past sellable date/time…

        • +1

          @spoonmugen:
A lot of the time, food gets thrown out simply because they're passed the before-before date, which doesn't mean that they have necessarily gone off and will make people sick.

& for fresh food which do have use-by dates, they're often still safe to eat after that date (they don't just turn bad as soon as the clock strick midnight) and one can usually tell from their look and smell.

        • @Love a bargain:

yes that's what I meant… food is still edible / should not been thrown out as 'waste'

        • +1

@ToastySteve: Currently work at Woolies and we try very hard to find people to give the day old bread to (farmers, community groups etc.) but it's really hard when there are 2 other supermarkets and 3 franchise bakers in the same complex. But they realise it's a massive problem not just in general but for their bottom line so they're slowly cracking down on it.

        • @spoonmugen:
What I was getting at is that it isn't even a trade off between dying of starvation and getting sick from eating from the food. Choosing wisely, the "out-of-date" food shouldn't make you sick.

          Neither can the chickens

        • @ToastySteve:

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver did an expose on food wastage this week and at least in litigation happy US, this is actually a misconception. There is a very old law that states that you are not liable if you donate food out of goodwill. It is just a misconception that people there at least still believe in. It might be very different here so I'm not sure.

Supermarkets usually overstock fresh produce as people tend to buy more. This is part of consumer psychology. People are more enticed to buy if there was produce bursting at the seams than if there was just one bunch of broccoli left, it wouldn't be touched. Many would assume that since it is the last one left, there is something wrong with it.

        • @ToastySteve: Sounds like grounds to instate a good-samaritan law in regards to corporate donation of the wastage.

    • Also by the way, if you are not struggling to feed yourself, try and donate if you eat the food at this event.

Wow! The NT has missed out again.

Not "again" but "as always". ;)

    • +2

      NT - "Not today" :(

WA - "Wait awhile" (well not in this case unless you factor in the 2 hour time difference between us and the east coast!)

Wow! The NT has missed out again.

Wasn't NT taken over by Japan during the war ?

      • The war ended decades ago. Get out and breathe some fresh air, jv!

        • -1

Where did I say it hadn't ended ?

        • @jv: So why mentioned about that part of history. It's not funny, dude!

No joy for NT anyway. :(

          @721411:

          No joy for NT

So Japan didn't give it back then ?

  • Do we have to bring the eticket along?

At the Sydney one they are letting anyone have free food.

      • Can confirm. Got a yummy meal without needing to produce papers. Of course, I gave them a donation as well.

  • There's no such thing as a free lunch.

I will be attending the Canberra event on my lunch break. Food is one of the most important resources we have.

The connection between rural and city has slowly eroded over time. Events like this reconnect us with food and other people.

Massive thumbs up to the OP for posting this, great job sir!

  • All on the one day? :(

I wanted to travel around the country and go to all of them!

  • just try my first Ozharvest free lunch and they are actually very tasty!
