  • Good price for an adaptor which is presumably reasonable quality meeting Australian electrical standards.

Note 12.5W max usage which makes having 4x USB ports a little silly.

    • depends on the devices…

    • Yeah, 2.1A max total across 4 ports. Are there any with higher total output current?

      • If I plug in one device only does it get the full 2.1A? Thanks

        • yes

        • As long as the total draw is under 2.1A, you're ok. How much a device draws is up to it.

    • 2A per port is generous.

      • 2A per port is generous.

        not simultaneously on all ports…

        • Yup got it.. see below..

    • The rated output is 2.1A so you could connect up to 4 500mA devices.

      • Excuse my addled brain… somehow confused W with A for about 5 minutes there!

    • I used to think these were silly, but then figured they are perfect to charge 4 pairs of 3D Glasses.

    • 12.5w at 240v

      Amps = Watts / Volts
So 2.5 amps @ 5V before transfer losses.

      • from spec: Output Current: 2.1A (Max) Overpower protection: 12.5W @ 220V AC

      • I have been looking at universal plug adapters for when I go traveling. This doesn't relate to usb but some of the adapters have an output of 6amps and some up to 15amps (all over 110-240v). Does the lower amperage mean if will charge my laptop slower when I plug it in?

        • Yes but it will vary with input voltage.

        • @King Tightarse:
Hmm confused.. the input should stay the same depending on what country I was in yeah.
For example would this one charge my laptop slower than this one if I tried them both in the same power outlet in the USA? Thanks for your help!

        • @jdogg:

Well, ohms law is Amps = Watts / Volts. Its easy to see that altering the voltage will alter the ampage at the input side.
On the output the dc voltage is static so you can just go by the ampage. More is obviously…more, but you can only go as high as your device is able to draw.
I would not trust either of those devices you linked as far as I could throw them. Get something from a proper brand with a reputation and safety certificates.

        • @King Tightarse:
Thanks for that! Yeah I think I will keep looking for a all in one solution from a reputable brand. Although the second one said it is certified CE, ROHS, and FCC (European standards) but I guess it's ebay and it's from China so you never really know

        • +1

          @jdogg:
          Yeah, really not worth it.
If it plugs into the wall, it can catch fire very quickly. Kind of the last time you would want random unknown brands. Definitely worth it to pay a bit more and get something from a brand you know.
          Good luck.

  • Yeah specs seem generous..

  • out of stock!!!

  • Item says instore and available but eBay says unable to purchase. anyone else having issues with click and collect?

    • Try change stores, it did it to me at payment page, but eventually worked.

      • I have tried 5 different stores no. All fail.

  • Found a 40W unit. 5 USB ports each capable of 2A output.

    • A cheaper one here, also local seller. No idea what the quality is like. Noticed it in the also viewed results.

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/6-Port-Universal-USB-Travel-Wall-…

      Hah, ninjaed.

      • These are 4A total.

        • True but adequate for a lot of people.

        • @greenpossum:
Yes, comes down to value for money. Now to decide which one….

    • +2

went and bought a 40W unit from a different seller. Offered $25 and was accepted.

      • Thanks for the heads up.

Watch out for cheap chinese products. There are safety standards that are meant to be followed in Australia. Products can be searched here. There are things going on behind the scenes that do nothing until something goes wrong. That tiny box has to fit a circuit that handles 240V and 5V. It is very easy to make a voltage charger that just works but much harder to make one that works safely.

If you are lucky you can end up with a cheap rebranded product from the exact same factory that produces safe products. In the worst case there is a slim chance of being exposed to 240V at the usb outlet.

      • +3

It's not a bargain when your house burns down and your insurance company won't pay up because you used a cheap power supply which isn't compliant in Australia.

        • love the username

      • To clarify, by worst case I meant products that may actually make it out to consumers. If the charger fails 90% of the time and just kills 100% of people instantly then it probably won't get anywhere. If it doesn't work then it won't get anywhere either.

But if 99.9% of the time it works fine but in 0.1% it overheats enough to cause solder to melt and cause a short circuit between the 5V circuit and 240V circuit and the current flowing through is just short of the current required to trip the house circuit breaker then that will be able to easily cause a fire.

      • +1

A very good point BUT people should also be aware that there are things they have no control over that could also cause a house fire… including low quality electrical cable ('Infinity' for example) or poor quality work by the electrician as per the douche who did our new-build a few years ago :(

        • +1

That infinity thing is crazy, that is the first time I have heard of that.

That sucks, a good electrician is valuable. But I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a bad and good one until something goes wrong after they leave.

I have a blank outlet wall plate on my wall because an electrician cut a hole, then tried to thread a phone cable and then hit a fireblock, so he put a plate on it and then cut another hole further up the wall.

Also when the treadmill is in use, the internet cuts out. I think the phone line was placed right next to the power cable and there is interference.

        • @rolypoly: Yeah well I'm still slowly going around to each GPO & Lightswitch, removing them one-by-one, cutting back & restripping the wires and replacing them as most were either covered in paint or hanging way too far out the back or not even screwed down properly! Am I a qualified Electrician? No but I'm fixing up the shambles created by our qualified Electrician and doing a far superior job in the process. It isn't rocket science. Next up are the lights but they're less of an issue.

The worst was something I recently discovered inside the switchboard after getting suspicious as to why our Washing machine was tripping its circuit and taking the Fridge out with it once every 6-8 weeks. I suspected it was a faulty breaker so I bought a replacement, cut the power then pulled the cover off and nearly died when I saw what he had (hadn't) done. The main feed out of the breaker hadn't been screwed down at all and was only just touching the metal inside the connection. On closer inspection I saw that the copper had discoloured which indicates it had seen quite a lot of heat. I took pics of it, replaced the breaker then screwed all the wires in properly and inspected further. I found several wires that had damaged insulation but I didn't bother replacing them at that time, I just wrapped them up with tape then put the cover back on. House inferno avoided!

So yeah, along with all the other dramas from most trades involved in our house build I can safely say that if you don't do it yourself you will never know if its actually done right let alone done safe… and this was a relatively expensive custom build too, not just an inexpensive cookie-cutter house! After going through that I don't think I'll ever build again but if I do I'll probably do most of it myself then get it checked & certified by these so-called qualified tradespeople just so those all-important yet meaningless legal boxes can be ticked.

        • @SteveAndBelle: I would never do electrical work on my own house. I am not a qualified electrician but my work does involve a lot of low voltage work. There are things in products that consumers have no idea exist. I am not sure if house wiring is the same, it seems pretty straightforward to me but I don't know what I don't know. There could be safety measures in place that consumers have no idea of.

  • Out of stock already

  • THE'RE BACK!!!!

    • Just managed to buy one also, thanks op!

  • There are plenty in stock! Just grabbed one in the ACT and checked the postcode of major cities and all stores are reporting In Stock.

  • As soon as the deal is offer , stock will be back as normal … Pull marketing

If these are anything like the seemingly identical generic versions I bought a couple of years ago please note that the thin clear plastic surrounding the ports lights up blue when powered up. Not too good for charging in a bedroom situation as the entire room illuminates! Even worse, when they get a bit older the lights begin to strobe but in no way affects the charging performance.

    • +1

Uh oh, that's not going to make one popular in hostel dorms. Maybe a bit of masking tape.

    • +2

Agree! I have two: one of these a generic model from DX, and the other Korjo branded. Both have the identical blue night light and one of them makes a high pitched squealing noise.

  • Damn. Local store says in stock then goes out of stock when I try to pay

    • Same for me too.

  • Just missed out :(

  • Ended :-(

Somebody please report this Sold Out or mark it so because I've already reported once.

Wonder how many of the people who successfully ordered will actually get one. DSE Bait and Disappoint?

    • My order was cancelled at DSE Ringwood, Vic, someone from the store called me to say all theirs had been stolen :(

  • DAMMIT! I was going to use it to charge my twin helicopters at the same time…

  • thanks got one in WA for pickup

      They're pissing you off…

Just be cautious. I bought a similar item from a Chinese online retailer a few years back - NOT from Dick Smith.
It shorted with sparks and a little fire burning from 2 of the ports. It went to the bin… and I still have the adapters.
I stopped buying such multiple ports USB chargers or cheap wall chargers, including cheap Apple look alike chargers.

    • Valid story ALpha!!

Save $5; burn your house down!! Been trying to warn people about this stuff for years.
You DONT want to see the pure shitness of the design and soldering inside these things.
If its 240v, get a decent brand. Hell, ANY brand thats known in Australia will do
      Just not cheap eBay junk.

      • is korjo no good? it is sold everywhere in Australia.

        • ALphas story was about a random Chinese product.
If its a known brand in Australia such as Korjo, most likely fine.

        • @King Tightarse:
Yes, the one I bought was unbranded and NOT this Korjo brand. And it was a few years back. Nonetheless, I bought it after checking it had all the the overload and safety measures indicated. Hopefully the electronics and quality of this item is much better and/or improved. Just sharing my bad experience as it is the same design.

          grasstown,
Korjo indicated KORJO ELECTRICAL PRODUCTS – APPROVED BY AUSTRALIAN ELECTRICAL AUTHORITIES… refer About Korjo section at https://www.korjo.com/Product-Range/Adaptors---Transformers/USB-x4-Power-Hub-(USB04).aspx for about $35 if it is the same product.

Btw, I do have a Korjo product too, the bulky World-to-Aus power adapter:-)

  • This is the usb charger I am currently using while travelling.
I like it very much except for the blue light where the usb ports are which lights up the room when I want it to be dark at night!
On the side, it is written that Outputs 1 and 2 are for "ipad and other devices" (higher current) while outputs 3 and 4 are for "galaxy and other devices". There were more details in the manual but I didn't bring that with me.
I think the 2.1A output is split between the usb ports so if you plug everything in, it will be lower for each.

  • Currently on sale for $12 at Dick Smith
