Has anyone ever paid for QFF membership?

    • +4

Yep … in the early days it was the only way. It was when it was a frequent flyer scheme vs a frequent buyer scheme

    • +1

yep. I paid too (back in the time). It was tax deductible; but don't think I ever got my moneys worth from paying for it.

    • I paid for it back in 2002. Way before ozbargain was created.

    • Same. Bought it back in 2000. Also got 3 years Qantas Club for $300. That was frozen when I hit Gold and for the next 11 years I never needed it again until last year. My 3 year Qantas Club membership which I purchased back in 2000 now expires this September 2015. :-)

    • +1

Dad bought the whole family membership last year…. that was a lot of money he wasted.

  • +1

Literally most frequent flyer's program are free. I've signed up with QFF, KrisFlyer, Emirates (whatever that name is), Cathay pacific and Enrich. All free… I wonder why QFF always claims to cost $89.50.

    • Isn't that the Cathay pacific membership cost 50USD?

      • US$50 is for joining Macro Polo. Asiamiles is free.

        • Yep. I'm purely counting miles. ;)

  • +13

Doesn't signing up for a Everyday Rewards card also get you free QFF membership?

    • yeah, or having an optus account.

    • Not applicable for our Tasmanian friends

      • +1

        What?!, this is unacceptable.

        • +29

Tasmania is not part of Australia anymore so it is acceptable

      • +2

We have our own unique membership with woolies.

        Because we are unique.

        • you mean inbred ;-)

  • +2

C'mmon. how is this deals always show up from time to time and not class as Duplicate?

    • +1

      6-month rule

    • I checked, and a QFF free membership deal had not been posted since early 2014.

I followed another comp link and STUMBLED across this page. Being a QFF member was part of the Ts & Cs of entering the comp, and as part of the comp promo you could get free QFF membership (enabling you to enter the comp).

    • Bam! Nice work.

  • Do they do FF for Debit Cards?

Edit: Google Says The only people who do is Bankwest

  • +1

    So many +'s
Anyone who pays for QFF, is just paying a 'I'm a lazy DH' tax

Who hasn't got a EDR card?

  • +4

Fair enough it's not a dupe - but why do people vote it up? You may as well advertise free rental of books at the local library.

    • What you can get free books at the library? IV only used I for video games

    • Except when you neg it (probably not this one) your neg gets removed and your comments down voted.

      • I would like to think the up others are the ones taking the opportunity to sign up (if they hadn't previously)

    • What are books?

  • need to pay annual fee ??

    • no,

  • What's the reason for them not posting this on their QFF join page ? Apart from snagging a few extra bucks from the unaware.

    https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyns/joinff

    • Because it's still a source of revenue, as many people (non-ozbargain types) won't google free membership before joining. They'd be dumb to give it up.

      • Thanks JHE - must make a few people disgruntled later when they find out they could have got it for free. Not a good marketing approach.

    • Different price for different market segments.

  • Link not working for anyone else?

  • Damn, I thought this meant you could start earning Frequent Flyer points on your card for free. How is this a deal?

  • The smirking Irish clown pisses himself laughing whenever some mug comes along and pays for membership.

  • So back to a previous q .. Can you get a free Cathay pacific membership ?

  • Many years ago I was being slugged the FF annual fee and a fee from ANZ to link my gold cr card. Approx $200/yr. With Qantas being my non-preferred carrier I dumped this as being very expensive. What saved my points was the Woolies reward card.
It's unknown to me if that bank still charges for (now platinum) CC.

    • There's never been a frequent flyer annual fee in my time. That is a card fee.

      • Thanks for that my error or 'lapse in memory'

      • Is there a difference other than causing people to create a mysterious seperate ledger where the fee is now able to be justified because it's name has changed?

    • Lel I think "platinum" level cards are a bit … non-exclusive these days. Foe example my bank sent me a platinum card for no particular reason a while back. I'm not particuarly wealthy ;)

OK whats the purpose of FF points? I suppose get free trips via QANTAS, but when do you use the card to get points? and how do they differ from Flybuys card?

    • Seriously?

Yes flights but also upgrades and you buy from their shop too.

Very roughly 1 point equals about 1c of value.

Do you get FlyBuys when you fly? No. That's the basic difference. You can get them for flying as well as spending.

I made a decision to try and funnel all points into Qantas rather than having a bunch of different schemes like FlyBuys etc with smaller and less useful points balances.

      • -1

so what shops can you EARN/REDEEM FF points at? I suppose the woolies chain of shops. e.g woolies, masters, big W etc..

        • -1

Go and search. There'll be a how to earn and a how to redeem page at Qantas.

You can earn them everywhere with a credit card. You can redeem them with Qantas for stuff.

If that's too hard, don't bother.

        • @Shonky:
Don't neg me because people/you are lazy to search yourself. Do need everything handed to you on a platter?

        • you can redeem mostly via QFF store. You 'shop' just like any other online shop and pay with points (and also allows you to use points + pay actual money)

For example, I got a Samsung Plasma TV, Nescafe Dolce Gusto, multiple flights to Singapore/HK/Malaysia and one other electrical.

That said, I collect nearly 800K points per year ;)

        • @stingy-oz: 800K points per year?? wow.. phenomenal.. how do u manage that mate?

        • @bkx3virgin:
The CC that I used under the business is tag to the QFF. And i do lots of transactions with it. :) I mean LOTS. i generally gets around 150K - 200K points per qtr.

  • Is it worth transferring points to Qantas FF from Citibank Rewards points?

    • +1

Not unless you intend on applying for new cards for bonus points (many more opportunities with Qantas than with Virgin).

If you're only concerned with points from your own spend, then keeping them as Citibank is better value (no annual fee, Velocity is generally better value anyway).

  • +1
Merged from Qantas Frequent Flyer Membership FREE (Usually AUD $89.50 Joining Fee)

Many of OzB will already have QFF membership, and I acknowledge it is free sign up with Woolworths EveryDay Rewards linked.

But kids, other family members and those who routinely shop at Coles/IGA/Aldi etc may not be able to capitalise on QFF points before jetting off to cheap fare destinations posted on OzB.

Usually $89.50, free signup with link above and here.

The offer is valid until 31 December 2015 and is available to Australian residents who:
    * Are not already a Qantas Frequent Flyer member; and
    * Accept the terms and conditions of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program.
Once you complete the following online application form, you will receive your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership number instantly so you can start earning Qantas Points straight away. The membership card will then be sent to you in the post (please allow 14 days for delivery).

There are no other restrictions for sign up - TOO EASY!!
The QFF issued card also has a built in Qantas travelcash Mastercard debit card that has better rates than the Multicash Card sold at Australia Post (once activated - also free).

    • +9

      'Free' is about QFF memberships's value these days .. :-( .. !!

      • Can you explain why this is? weighing up whether or not to sign up to QFF or not

    • +3

I feel for anyone who's overpaid the $89.50 for QFF membership. It is available for free in a very large variety of different channels. Surprised this has got 8 positives over 10 minutes (it's too positive!)

      • +2

get back to work illumination. :)

    • We cannot process your Qantas Frequent Flyer application at this time. We are currently experiencing technical difficulties processing your request. Kindly try again later.

      • It was working fine 20 mins ago when I signed up, maybe heavy traffic?

    • +2

I have this card already, as well as Virgin and others loyalty cards, but I can't seem to make use of the points other than the Coles flybuys card. ANyone have similar experience?

      • +1

You can link your QFF and earn points with Woolworthes Everyday Rewards Card; is that what you're asking where to earn points?

      • these QFF points are good if you buy gift cards. That is the ONLY value and it works out ok. The crap in their store really is crap but you can get gift cards to woolies and use them for shopping or stuff from masters.

it costs me $50 to have them applied to my citibank card for the year and I get back at least $500 from points to shop with. I use my cc for everything. Around 35000 points for $250 I think.

        • You would probably get better value out of flights to be honest.

        • Flights… Use your QFF points for Flights.

        • 35000 points for a $250 gift card.. ouch

          I've used 33,000 points:
25,000 for a bus class upgrade from HK to Syd. Fare difference on that is over $2500
8,000 points on a CBR -> SYD fare, saving $300

use them on flights or upgrades

        • @ChickenTalon: You can only upgrade certain ticket classes. Many Ozbargainers buy Q class tickets which are not upgradeable. Unless you know of a way to do this, I don't!

I did save some money on prebooking seats which were cheaper to do that getting store vouchers

        • @RockyRaccoon: yep it was a flexible fare, hence why i didn't quote a fare difference of $2700 from the Q class ticket :)

        • I don't have much use for flights anymore so at least get something back with gift cards.

Since i'm spending the money one way or the other, it's still ultimately $250 free shopping.

        • @snook: Then I definitely agree with you.
If you don't fly at all or hardly ever, then gift cards are the next best option is to just use it on gift cards.

    • wasn't it always free with woolworths everyday rewards?

      • Kids don't tend to have Everyday rewards cards, so you can start accumulating points earlier this way for the little ones.
        Just an idea?

        • +1

Its best to link to a EDR in any case. The points now expires after 18 month of inactivity. The EDR is the easiest way to keep it active.

          • @dyziplen: Can do a family transfer out of each kid's one to an active QFF account linked to EDR to not waste them.
But good point…thanks for pointing out.

        • @garratt torlesse: Yeah, watch the inactivity thing. Before you could link it to a credit card, or Everyday account, we nearly lost enough points for two round the world economy tickets. (Technically we did lose them but we finally managed to negotiate them back. The kicker was we had to book the tickets within a week of getting the points back; that was a bit frantic whilst we worked out where and when.) Make sure you link the account to something you use reasonably often.

and this is a bargain how?
      its always been free….

      • Always? How did they sell that to the shareholders?

        • who knows, maybe they like FREE!

    • QF is way better than a lot of other FF.

      I got Melb-HK for 65000 points + 260 taxes. Which is a saving of almost 600 dollars.

Other FF i have to use over 100K points + 260 taxes or sth.

Fly in August, not holiday periods.

      • +1

QFF is actually not way better than a lot of other FF, but I am curious as to which ones you are comparing it to.

KrisFlyer and Asia Miles, for example, are two FFs which we have reasonable access to (depending on your circumstances) which offer superior value.

QFF redemptions flights are also particularly difficult to redeem (lack of availability), especially in premium classes which is where the value improves significantly.

      • u realise points in one program <> points in another program. just like a dollar in one country <> a dollar in another

100k velocity points prob = 60000 qff for example in value

        • The valuation you quoted is not quite right.

          Example:
SYD-LAX Business class on Velocity is 94000 points and on QFF is 96000 points. Also, it is generally the case that the taxes when redeeming QFF points are much higher to the tune of 400-500$.

In general velocity points are (slightly) more valuable than qff points due to the taxes issue alone.

    • Can someone ELI5 frequent flyer points to me? People seem to always bag it, I've never had it/considered it.

    • i used 40000k points to book 2 flights for 2 adults from miami-> atlanta then charlotte to lax, total cost ~$30 AUD in taxes… worth it for us domestic flights

      • +2

        40,000,000 points? that's a lot of points.

        • dam right, 40000 sorry…..40000k would get you to the moon and back
