Hello everyone!

For those who are interested in the HTC One M9, Vodafone has them for oddly low 12-month contract prices. Doing some contract math,

95 x 12 = $1140
RRP of the HTC One M9 = $1099
RRP of Telstra's HTC One M9 = $936

1140-936 = $204

204/12 = $17 per month

$17 per month for 3gb of data (4gb if you sign up online before 9/4/15), unlimited calls / texts, 300 standard international minutes in Oz and 6 months free spotify / SMH access is a pretty good deal, in my eyes anyway.

If you were to go on their equivalent 24 month contract (70 + 10), you'd still be better off taking the 12 month contract and then going on Vodafone's $50 Red for the other 12 months

$80 x 24 = $1920

1140 + 600 (50x12) = 1740

EDIT - It's probably better value to go for the $100 pm (80 + 20) if you're going to use the 12 months of spotify - the extra $5 over 12 months = $60, while the extra 6 months of spotify = $72. (Plus an extra GB of data!)

Not sure how long this'll go for. Thanks to whirlpool for raising it up!

  • Why I see Total min cost $1848?

    • I'd say that would be the 24 month price. I can't find the 12 month price.

      • Its above the plan prices to the right. Just below the "Q&A" tab

      • So did I.

    • +3

there's a drop down box on the right, change it from 24 months to 12 months

      • Got it. Thanks.

      • Not sure how I missed that one. Thanks!

    • T&C of the specific plan says minimum cost is $840

  • +2

    Good find

$1140 is pretty damn cheap for 3GB a month (for 12 months) and a phone.

  • Who knows if the phone is unlocked to all carriers or not? Thanks.

    • +3

      It'll be unlocked

  • I just signed up for a 2 year plan on virgin mobile for the Note 4. Is it bad that i really want to get this? I seem to go over my data alot, and at $10/GB with Virgin, this could be worth as a backup. Plus i get a spangly new phone!

    • +1

      no its not bad.
u could even sell the phone if u just want data

  • +2

Don't forget $120 cash back from qwibble.

    • Page not found.

      • Hmm not sure when they pulled it. I claimed mine not long ago

  • I have never used HTC phone before and i currently have the samsung s4, how is it using htc compare to samsung or apple? m9 compare to iphone 6 and samsung s6?

    • +2

i like the HTC look n feel more than samsung but at end of day it's android.

htc m9 if im not mistaken is unibody metal. looks and feels very nice

    • I have used HTC M7, iPhone 5s, and now a Samsung note edge. Personally, I really despised the HTC, the camera was absolute rubbish and I hated the HTC sense overlay. I was glad when I did not have to use it anymore. It was a work phone. Very happy with my Samsung would never go back to apple, blah!

      • +3

They aren't using an ultrapixel for the back camera for the M9(but's probably still not as good as the S6 or Note 4)

      • +1

i was happy with the m8 camera.
isnt the m7 like the cheaper/older version of the m8?

        • +1

Same to m8 - a cheaper and older version of m9.

      • Hahahaha… Yea ! Use ur samsung, dont use iphone :) :) :)

    • +1

HTC has pretty much got scathing reviews from anandtech and others. I like HTC but I am staying away from M9.

      • +3

The HTC M7 (the first of this series of model) held #1 spot on stuff's poll for about 12 months, then got knocked off my the LG G3. http://www.stuff.tv/top-10/smartphones Samsungs barely feature. The is no 'best phone', even reviewers can't hold back their fanboyism.

    • +2

i have the M8, switch over from SGS4. loving it. solid build, not platic feel like the S4.

  • Have a look at the reviews that just came out. Appears this phone is pretty poor value for a flagship.

  • +1

good price compared to the outright price. flagship phones for around $1000.00 outright is just ridiculous….

    • What wrong with vodafone? ;)

    • +2

Are we still on this vodafail bandwagon here? Have you been living under a rock?

  • +2

You can pay out your plan at $70 x months remaining.

So buy the plan, presumably pay month 1 @ $95, then pay out the remaining $70x11 months.

Total cost $865 for an unlocked M9.

The T&C says minimum $840 though so perhaps there's a way to not pay that first month, you could always call and argue that point as it is written by them.

Also if you use Spotify, the $5 a month more plan is 12 months not 6 months of Spotify, so an extra $60 for 6 months of Spotify PLUS an extra GB per month of data. Useful if you use that service.

    • for a good phone and unlimited calls+3GB of data for $865, will be great deal if this possible to do.

      • If you pay out a plan, that means you are just getting the phone not the plan itself.

        • Oh got it now. Thanks for the correction. For some reasons i thought like paying in advance.

    • Vodafone payout pricing is remaining plan installments ($70 x 11) + any outstanding MRO ($15x11) so you are basically paying for the whole contract, but not getting to use it. The minimum amount listed in the T&C refers to the contract only.

  • -2

Oh so its like most rip off pay by the month deals? How is this a bargain.

  • might sign-up if this deal is for s6 edge :)
    Still a good deal

    • Unlikely.

  • -4

Don't know what is the fuss about this 5" phone. From all the flagships out there all over 5.5" and same or better price.

    • +1

Imagine how boring 5.5" phones will be when 7" phones are the norm!

  • +1

Wow - what a difference a few years make. Vodafone's prices have really sky-rocketed.

A few years ago this was a good deal for $234 with a new phone.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/36261

    • It's not vodafone, it's HTC.

      • Its probably a bit of both. On Vodafone you used to be able to have a $20/month plan with unlimited voda to voda calls. Now the cheapest is $25/month with no unlimited Vodafone to Vodafone and fewer inclusions than a few years ago. The same plan with roughly equivalent inclusions is now $30/month.

    • +1

      They got good.

  • +1

reviews say its no better than m8

  • +3

"RRP of the HTC One M9 = $1099"

    lol, good luck with that.

  • Damn you oz bargain ….

I have been waiting waiting waiting. No deals with HTC M8 , then went buying from eBay. And now a few days later I sees this. This sucks.

So tempted. So should I sign up to this and sell my yet to arrive M8 ?

    • Did you buy the AT&T M8? I might be interested….?

    • yes

  • i would buy it for $95

  • People pay this much for mobiles?

  • +2

That's one of the most bloated RRP for a phone. You ain't apple HTC. And apple is overpriced as it is

  • -5

$1099 for last years phone. Yeah, sounds reasonable to me!

EDIT: Not attacking you OP, just incredulous at HTC's thought process.

    • M7, M8, M9.

      This is a M9.

      • Yes. And this M9 has almost the same body, same battery life, same performance, exactly the same UI, still a crap camera… Wait how is it even different? Why does it deserve that $1099 price tag?

        • Not sure why you are down voted but you are almost correct except the M9 actually has about 20% worse battery life to the M8. It also has overheating issue so the phone will be heavily throttled thus you would not notice a performance gain over the M8. The camera is upgraded though, a review is needed to check the capability of the new camera.

It truly does not deserve the horrifying price tag.

  • Is this water proof/resistant?

    • nope

      • The M8 was IPX3 rated which means water-resistant, HTC didn't publicise it at all though.

One would assume the M9 is too.

        • I was referring to

          Main disadvantages
Screen has the same specs three years in a row
          Non-removable battery
          No water and dust protection
Camera lacks OIS or digital video stabilization
          Not particularly slim or compact

damn I live in Australia, no Vodafone coverage

    • +4

Vodafone has been freaking sweet since joining them in April last year.
They keep adding new towers around the place that I notice, more and more 4G.
And regional areas use optus which isn't too bad.

    • -2

I think thats the point of this post, joining Vodafone is like doing missionary work in Africa, it gives you 1 month experience of getting SMS 24hours late, people complain your phone is always "off", ozbargain taking 2mins to load.. After the month is over and you have this new cheap phone, Telstra will make you feel grateful.

      • And your point is ?
Some areas Vodafail is faster and better.
Like me. I live in a rural area, hel$tra 3G overloaded fast as dialup no 4g yet…..
Vodafail is now 4G and fast. So I happy with vodafail.
Are you on vodafail or hel$tra ?

  • Can you claim TRS on this if I'm going overseas?

    • Hmm…keen on such an offer as well. Maybe pay the phone upfront and get VF to show a tax invoice. I am thinking not possible.

      • Not possible, otherwise I would sign a contract for this extremely boring looking pgone

    • No - $300 min spend $900 max within 60 days.

      • There's no $900 maximum. I claimed TRS on 2 tablets worth $1150 in total, and 2 lenses worth a total of $4600 last time I flew (November 2014).

The $900 threshold is the duty-free allowance inbound, so if you bring in goods worth more than $900 back in with you, you have to declare them and may be liable for duty and/or GST

(Yes, I duly declared my lenses when I brought them back).

        • out of curiosity, did you have to pay the gst back for the lenses in that case? If so, what was the point of claiming them in the first place?

        • @steff:

No, they didn't ask for it.

The customs guy asked me if I had claimed GST on them. I told him I gifted the tablets to my family and kept the lenses.

He laughed and waved me through.

I suppose people smuggling instant noodles are a highet priority lol

        • @twister292:
Them noodles man, they have the real msg!

        • @twister292:

that's awesome mate! A few of my friends did have to pay some of it back though (those valued over $900)

  • How hard it is to change current Vodafone contracts?

  • RRP is arbitrary if most sales will come from plans rather than outright. $1100 sounds high

  • Kogan is selling the s6 presale at $869. Based on that Vodafone might offer the same deal for the S6.
    https://www.kogan.com/au/shop/phones/?facet-model-type=Samsu…

    • yatango is cheaper at $850 for the s6 and free shipping

  • +9

The effective cost of the device on a $95x12m plan is $540

    Here's how:

The SIM-only plan with the same inclusions is $50/month (it can be had for $45/month if you subscribe only till 9-Apr-15, and that includes the bonus 1GB).

Same plan when bundled with phone is $70/month

    Plus $25/month for the phone

    Total cost 92x12= $1140

$1140 minus the cost of the SIM-only plan with the same inclusions is $1140-(50x12)

So you're paying $540 for the phone

To throw another little spanner into the works, the equivalent SIM-only plan is $45/m if you sign up before 9-Apr-15, so that makes the real cost of the handset $600.

For the RRP of the phone being $936 with Telstra, it's a saving (effective on RRP) of 42.3% (if you disregard the current $5/month discount on the SIM-only version of the plan) or 35.9% if you were to subscribe to the SIM-only plan before 9-Apr-15 and get another $5/month off.

    • +1

Hooray! someone used simple logic to make a point the handset is about $540…..
      +1 for twister….

    • +1

This is implying that you'd otherwise be on vodafone's sim only.

When I did this comparison. I currently use the $25 p/m jeenee mobile 1.5GB.

So it was $25*12m = $300 for the plan.
      Then, 1160 - 300
      = $860

      true price for me.

I'm aware its unlimited calls (not "$500"), double the data, 6 months or 12 months of spotify valued at $12/pm as well as those int minutes. But its what I use. Your numbers make sense if you are already paying $45 or $50 p/m sim only, otherwise the handset cost may change wildly depending on what people currently pay for and actually use!

Also keep in mind that this phone has received pretty negative reviews along the lines of "Why get this when you can get an m8 for half the price". It's camera is no better, its battery got slightly worse. It looks nicer, but that cant be the only nice thing about it! The performance is great, but so is every other phone. So now you're left with HTC Sense overlay which is ok, but could be had on the m8 :)

      • +2

I'm actually waiting for clearance offers on M8 myself!

That's why I used the tern effective cost of the phone on that particular plan i.e. the true cost of the phone as embedded into that plan itself.

On the 70+15/12m plan, you're effectively paying $600 for the device considering the plan is the same as the 45/m SIM-only.

This effective price changes depending on a each specific plan itself.

  • ALSO - Vodafone allow you to upgrade your plan 3 months prior to it finishing. (I assume this would be no different)

  • +1

If I didn't sign with Virgin a few months back…

This is an amazing deal for a flagship phone with only 12 months commitment.

  • I am very undecided can someone convince me ?

  • right when i need to upgrade my vodafone plan but not sure between S6 and M9. Camera looks not so good compared with S6.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrMso9wbSr4

    • HTC cameras are abysmal and the touchscreens start to get issues as they age (respond slower)

source: I'm on my third HTC

  • +1

Can I sign up to the $100 p/m plan over 12 months (costing $1,200), sell the brand new phone for $900, and keep 12 months of Spotify, 4GB data and unlimited calls/text for $25/month?

    • it's only if you can sell the phone for 900$ which i m thinking to do the same thing as i prefer to use z3 XD

      • But thats the thing. Do you think people will buy M9 for $900?

        • i am thinking with 800$

        • @triplenet:

Im thinkin not to use android. So ill pay $80 only…

    • yes

    • +2

I doubt you'll get $900 for the phone. Even if you get $900 - $25/month is still more expensive than providers like lycamobile - $19.90/month for almost the same.

Sure you don't get 4G data or spotify with lycamobile, but this just seems like a lot of hassle for not much benefit.

      • +1

lyca is a promotion not guaranteed for 12 months like the plan also lyca currently do not support mms
