Optus Extends $90 Unlimited Broadband Offering to All Fixed Line Customers

1291

Last year, Optus offered HFC customers unlimited cable broadband for $90 a month. Now, the same deal has been extended to ADSL2+ and NBN Fibre network users. (That’s a monthly price reduction of $25 compared to Optus’ previous pricing.)

If you have excessive data needs, Optus’ revised unlimited broadband plans might be worth a look. From today, customers who sign up to a Broadband + Home Phone Bundle, Entertainment Bundle or Big Home Bundle plan on a 24-month contract will pay $90 a month instead of the previous $115. All three plans work out to a minimum total cost of $2160 over 24 months.

The deal includes unlimited data (downloads and uploads), unlimited calls to Australian mobile and landline numbers and free calls to a number of overseas destinations. You’ll also get the basic Fetch TV bundle which recently launched seven new channels, including BBC First, UKTV, The Food Network, Universal Channel and Nat Geo Wild.

The plans are available over Optus’ HFC, ADSL2+ and NBN Fibre networks. The offer ends on 6 April 2015. Offer ends 31 May 2015.

Yeah great to see the options! Honestly a tablet would be more useful to me than the fetch entertainment pack.

  • -2

nice but i only have adsl 1 100kbps@chirnside park vic and marcolm isnt doing a single thing about it… wheres my nbn malcolm?

  • -1

i got 100 mb and 2 first months free all for 90$. and i m loving it. get about 102mb down and 1.7 up. but its slower during afternoon

    • New customer or re-contracting?

  • -1

For anyone not looking for cable, It's only $40 a month (standard pricing) for Club Telco absolute unlimited ADSL2+. No throttling or shaping & no contracts either.

    • +1

Plus $80 per year "membership" fee!

      • -2

        Only for new customers.

        • what do you mean only for new customers ?
They've had Membership fees since they started operation. It used to be $50 now its $80 per Year.
I'm not a new Customer, how did you stop them from charging you each year?

        • @Username3RR0r:

Was actually $40 as a yearly fee to start with (it was just called a members benefit card thing of some sort - which was like a gold card type card for discounts eating out & stuff). When they started raising the prices of the yearly membership, I just called up and said I'll be leaving if you raise my membership fee. So they locked it in at $40 for me.

There's no reason why you cant barter or negotiate for a better deal with these sales people. If they say no, just ask to speak to their manager - often they'll have the authority to approve a discount.

  • Pitty I rent. ADSL2+ for me.

  • +2

Spoke to Telstra yesterday and they offered $20 off my monthly bill :) Worth asking sometimes

    • What bundle do you have with them?

      • Hell old one which I have been out of contract since 2012 lol. I get 200GB, Local calls, national calls, free mobile calls to Telstra and a few extras for $80mth

        • Great. I'll try and do the same. I'm on the 200GB plan for $80 with landline. No extra freebies though. Did you say you were planning to leave or if they could do a better deal?

        • @Vita85: Yeah it was in response to the new $20 off offer for new customers but spoke to a guy on 24/7 chat and he offered the $20 off for me on my current plan :)

        • @TRENT86: Thanks mate, that's even easier. Will do :)

        • Hi Trent86, thanks for the info. I am on a similar Telstra pLan: $80 a month, 200GB data, line rental, but calls are extra. Are you sure your plan has calls included for $60 dollars a month now? I like to cut a similar deal with Telstra, instead of moving to Optus.

          Cheers, Bob

        • @Bob Wang:

I'm on the same as you Bob, just tried chat and they wouldn't budge at all. They offered me the same bundle for a higher price I'm paying now. Laughable. Maybe via phone call you'd get more success or maybe it's just the rep I chatted with.

        • @Vita85: thanks for sharing the information.

        • I've got the same old bundle and am paying $100 a month for it. What did you have to say to them to get them to offer you the $20 off per month?

    • Sounds good but the $20 off has been running for some time, telstras overpriced Need to offer more gigs on their plans

  • +2

Does anyone think Telstra will offer unlimited Cable plans any time soon? Otherwise will recontract to Optus for another 24 months.

    • No.. there tight asses! & if they do probably charge $2mil a month, Want to move to optus but read the whirlpool forums & there speeds are crap with massive congestion, so sitting back waiting for telstra to add more gig to there bundle plans, should happen by 2027

      • Yeah, congestion is definitely becoming more noticeable on Optus Cable. Whereas Telstra Cable does 110mbps in most areas.

  • How does Optus compare to Telstra?

I've just about had it with the poor service and support from Telstra both here and in the Philippines! They just never sort out the issues/s and just keep putting you on hold or transferring you to someone else who does exactly the same thing; nothing! :(

Also, how does Optus Cable compare to Telstra cable in terms of speed and reliability?

Look forward to any feedback from Optus/Telstra cable users as this deal looks pretty good on face value!

    • Speed and reliability depend on the area you live in.

      • I understand, and I'm in Sydney east but am also interested in overall network speed and reliability and probably more importantly their level of service and support when things go wrong?

        • +1

If you have an issue, you're better off contacting Optus through their Twitter or Facebook. They respond really quickly and it's all onshore. Their call centres are a mixed bag, some offshore, some onshore. I've had some pretty bad experiences with their call centres, but YMMV.

If you need a technician out to fix a fault they can usually get someone out same day/next day, depending on how busy they are (eg. when there are storms their quota blows out). First time service calls are usually attended to by contractors, but that's not necessarily a bad thing as some of them are really good.

Cable is all above ground, which means their network is prone to getting ripped down in storms, high winds, by garbage trucks etc. So you're more likely to have a fault than you are on DSL, but it also means it's much easier and quicker to fix.

Can't offer any help with Telstra, sorry.

        • @girlshaped:

          Thanks for that feedback GS.

What kind or performance/speed do you get with Optus Cable and where is the service located?

          Cheers,

          BB

        • @Binaryboy: I'm currently on DSL, used to be on Cable in Melbourne's North. Had no complaints at all with it for the ~2 years I had it. Could easily get 100mb when I had the speed pack, and I think there was one or two area outages in the whole time I was there (lost service for maybe 8 hours each time).

Sydney is a bit different though. There's a lot more customers, so congestion is a more of a problem than it is in VIC. No guarantees, but I'm fairly certain the East isn't too bad in this respect.

    • Optus cheaper, Telstra faster.

  • I signed up today as ADSL2+ isn't available in my area :( Really good deal and looking forward to 100MPS internet!!

  • +1

I'm currently paying $85/month for 300GB at 100Mbps on Optus Cable. Speeds are great at all times of the day (Nunawading, VIC). Origin downloads are the best at 15MB/s. That's line speed! Steam is usually around half and torrents of course depend on the seeds but up to 5MB/s.

I'm not sure if I'll switch to this. I'm out of contract. I wouldn't use the landline or Fetch much, if at all. 300GB/month is enough; I've only hit the limit on the last few days a couple of times in the last 2 years. I shouldn't hit it if I manage my downloads properly.

    Something to mull over…

    • +1

It depends on if an extra $5 a month eases your mind about hitting your 300Gb cap, as you'll probably be able to keep your Speed Pack for free if you get the right online rep (although it may take a few goes). Don't forget if you are a Cable customer you'll be looknig at the Unlimited Cable Bundle (http://www.optus.com.au/shop/promotions/superfast-cable-bund…). Handy if you ever need to talk to anyone overseas (at least in the selected countries anyway) and this includes all the 13/1300 numbers (which some of the old plans excluded). As far as FetchTV with the Entertainment bundle you get a few channels like ESPN and BBC First and a 1Tb PVR to muck about with.

      • Does BBC first carry Top Gear? Is there much live sport on ESPN?

I'd look in to it if Optus offered data sharing with your mobile plan, that'd be great. Telstra will offer that but only on their wifi spots.

PVR could be handy if it's better than the one built into my 2013 Samsung TV.

        • +2

Actually you tend to get more Top Gear on BBC Knowledge which is also included in the Entertainment bundle. As with most Pay TV channels you are getting repeats so you get mixed bag. For example, tonight is Top Gear at 6:30, 7:30 and 10:40pm, Top Gear USA at 11:40pm (and even Mud, Sweat and Gears at 8:40pm). BBC First is more a premium drama offering (things like Peaky Blinders). As for 'live'sport on ESPN, again you get a mixed bag. You get some US Basketball, some Baseball (local stuff too), and some older things (like tonight there is a couple of hours of classic Mike Tyson fights). You also get a few other decent channels but everyone is different so depends on what you are into - Syfy if you like a bit of Sharknado and Doctor Who, a few MTV channels (even some with actual video clips!), a couple of National Geographic channels, and even Disney and Nickelodeon channels. You also get 30 movies a month free to watch on-demand. Yeah, they are usually older movies but every now and again you'll find something OK (like Capote, or Chariots of Fire, or Stripes if you are old enough to remember Bill Murray as a younger man). As for the PVR I can't compare to the Sammy, but it does an OK job.

        • @espcookie:

          It it in SD though?

        • +2

BBC Knowledge airs the current season of Top Gear a few hours after airing in the UK (7am Monday morning), repeated at 7:30pm.

        • +3

My understanding is the tuners are capable of HD but the PVR will only record MPEG4 SD quality (http://www.fetchtv.com.au/FAQ/what-is-fetch-tv).

        • @espcookie:

I might get some use out of the PVR. The Samsung can't handle scheduled recording. The EPG updates and then doesn't match what you've set so it doesn't record. Everything has to be done manually like the old VCR days. And forget series recording! Does Optus' handle this okay?

I'd watch new eps of Top Gear, old episodes of Doctor Who and maybe some classic movies. Disney would be handy when I have kids…

Do any channels run classic episodes of The Simpons? Mainly S03 to S10?

        • +1

EPG is OK and does have series link recording which is handy. I haven't used it a great deal but has been fine when I have. No luck with Simpsons episdoes - you need Fox8 channel which isn't in any of these (you would need the basic Foxtel bundle for $25).

        • @espcookie: Thanks. That is disappointing though.

  • +2

Thanks, recontracted @ $90p/m. Asked for the speedpack and they said no problemo. This was via online chat.

  • Optus website is hopeless, trying to check if I'm eligible.. "address details below could not be confirmed". I've tried with two different address/ph number combinations that I know are correct.

    • Yes - I have had the same trouble checking relatives addresses. Try online reps for an answer as I find them better than over the phone.

      • Thanks for that. I just did the chat thing. This deal available in the area I was looking into. Maybe the ADSL deal is only available in areas that have Optus DSLAMs, or they are neglecting Zone 3 people. They will have to stick with their existing ISP for now (Exetel).

  • Good deal. Currently with Optus paying this for 200GB Downloads Naked.

  • +1

This is not available to all fixed line - if you still have ADSL1 you are out of luck.

    • Yes, the Title of this really should be changed. For those of us in certain regional areas, for example, it's definitely not available.

  • got the $19 repayment (tablet) waived for the big bundle and tried to ask for premium speed but no luck via on-line chat… Overall is a happy experience

    • +1

What do you mean on the tablet repayment? I thought the tablet was part of the bundle, not extra?

      • "The $19.00 per month tablet repayment fee is waived for the duration
of your 24 month plan. If you move to a different rate plan the monthly
credits will cease. If you leave early you’ll need to pay out any unpaid
contributions of $19 per month towards the full cost of your device
including those we were going to cover"

        • Yes, but that is part of the package. The poster above indicated they got optus to waive the fee. The fee was already waived as part of the bundle.

        • +1

Since he hasn't replied, I'm going to assume that he was on the Big Home Bundle but has transferred to this Unlimited Broadband Bundle and managed to get the $19.00 tablet repayments waived from the cancellation of the other plan.

    • so does this mean you are now paying $71 per month??

    • Also keen to know if you meant you got $19 off per month (so $71 per month)? I asked for this via chat but was told no.

  • Does optus still have problems watching twitch.tv in prime time?

I'm with exetel and I get twitch lag almost every night between 5pm to midnight and I really want to change to a different ISP.

  • +1

Tpg is still cheaper, isn't it?

    • Yes. This is only a good deal for cable

  • Too bad that I am with Telstra already.

  • +1

My address cannot be located in the online check, tried talking to an online rep in the chat and he said every address he is trying to check is failing….weird.

    • Same as my address. I already have an active NBN service, and Optus were telling me NBN is not available. I just called again and then it was available.

    • How to tell if we are really with cable or not?

    • maybe they're not taking into account that the world is rotating!

  • +2

We're still going strong with this plan. It's currently costing us $70 a month includes free speed pack and loyalty discount of $20.

Just had to recontract for 24 months.

i had given them a call to see if we could get the free tablet, they said we could but would lose the speed pack.

  • +4

I was previously on the $115/month "Entertainment Bundle". I spoke to a rep on live chat through the website and they've renewed my contract on to this $90/month and kept the free 100Mbps speed pack that I had previously. Good $25 savings for the same deal plus the added call privileges. Thanks!

    • What happens after 24 months? Will it go back up or do we get a new deal?

      • +1

The offer itself? It's available to sign up to until 7th of April. Once your 24 months is up the plan continues and you just keep paying monthly but have the option to cancel or change. If they release better deal before the end of the 24 months, they allow you to switch your plan if you renew a contract with them.

    • I want to exact same plan, but am wary of contracts… Can I get it month on month by paying $10 extra?

      • I didn't see any option for it or any mention of that possibility. I'm unsure and kind of doubt it. But it doesn't hurt to ask!

      • +2

Yes you can. I didn't like the link posted above, since it's very restrictive, but you can see all the different broadband bundles from this website, and has the button for the month-by-month option.

        http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/phone/plans/entertain…

  • Would this deal be available from Optus where only Telstra ADSL DSLAMS are available in the exchange?

  • I took Optus up on this offer as well - however I did not get the Speed pack. I called them back and got the Speedpack as an added bonus - but the condition was that the plan would start from tomorrow.

Now to wait for my bill :P

I was out of contract. Does anybody know how to check if the Speedpack was applied? Speed test?

Currently running an old Motorola provided modem :S

    • +1

Are they sending you a free modem as well?
Won't be able to get the premium speed on the old motorola.

      • Unfortunatley they are not sending me a free modem :(

I checked today and I haven't been upgraded - I am still stuck on my old plan. Will have to call them up today and complain again

  • I am currently with optus, but is out of contract.
Already have the fetch tv as part of the original bundle that i have with them.

I am just thinking, if i renegotiate with a new contract, do you reckon i could request for a "new" fetch tv receiver… And keep the one that i already have from them??

    • I was like you on an older bundle with an original Fetch box. Was told online that they would only apply the new Entertainment bundle (as this wasy on the Unlimited Cable bundle) to my existing box (which they did the same day) as they were not sending new boxes to existing Fetch customers. I used the trade-off as leverage to get the $20 Speed pack added for free.

      • will try my luck again tom, and hopefully i could find a rep that is willing to send me an extra fetch box plus the speed pack…

  • Unlimited broadband Were $xx???

    • Unlimited broadband bundles were

  • Our home has been using Optus cable for 10 years. Speeds were great and we had no congestion until 2 years ago. Optus are oversubscribing their network and milking it for money before NBN comes out, and these unlimited plans reflect that. I can only imagine congestion will get worse with these deals. We had to switch to Telstra because our download speeds dropped to 50kB/s from 4pm-9pm whereas before we'd get speeds of 1MB/s+. Called Optus, did line tests - apparently nothing wrong. Paying $90 for unusable internet is not worth it even if you have all the data in the world. When we left they didn't even make a fuss.

    • +1

That's not a reason for a neg. NBN, ADSL2+, and even Cable elsewhere are likely fine; it's a good deal for a family with a house mum that chats all day…

      • +3

Just warning people. Many people have similar issues and it's in clusters of neighbourhoods. Whirlpool has alot of optus complaints - although it's not the greatest representation, it still shows there's alot of areas with bad cable and ADSL2. They shouldn't provide a service that they can't reliably supply.
They've had quite a few issues recently too - one of them including the china internet link that wasn't working properly for a whole month. It put alot of congestion in other areas, and Optus didn't even bother to inform customers via email. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2209382

        • -2

Do you complain about slow mobile data in shopping centres or the city? Cos this is what you are whinging about. Do you complain about the freeway at 8am on your trip to the city?

If so, you are just silly. There is nothing they can do about these things, and when they do fix it, it isn't cheap and takes time.

Time for Vic roads and the government to shut down the roads into the city because they aren't reliable at peak time. Good on ya

        • +4

@smpantsonfire: Different ballpark buddy. Take my advice or leave it. You have a choice with ISPs- you don't really with roads, and I accept that

  • Help: I'm pretty keen on this deal and its available in my area (both Cable and ADSL versions). Which one should I go with??

    • Prob cable as you can ask for the premium speed pack

    • Cable with speed pack.

    • If you are going Cable you are best with the $90 Unlimited Cable Bundle (http://www.optus.com.au/shop/promotions/superfast-cable-bund…). While it does NOT include the Premium Speed Pack (for 100M speeds) which is normally an additional $20, if you are a new customer (or even an existing customer) you should be able to negotiate it to be included. I have done it using an online rep stating the inclusion (which means you can have the transcript sent to you if it doesn't happen for any reason) as an existing customer (although it took 4 attempts). If you are a new customer you should have less trouble.

  • Wondering if anyone was able to ask for any loyalty discount? Tried to negotiate further but was told by the sales rep over the phone that no further discount allowed, plus I'm on ADSL so the premium speed doesn't apply

    • +1

My experience was that you call them and ask for service disconnection, then do the nagging and negotiating when you can talk to that section. They have more power to be flexible than others

      • Is there a risk that if you negotiate too hard you will actually cancel your service? I don't want to lose my current deal.

        • +1

I actually tried before this deal came up, so I might give it another try tomrrow. No @sween64, the worst you can do is just admit defeat and say "I'll think about it and call back later"

        • @jonno82:
You are right. Just hang up and try again another time. The result of your call might depend on who you talk to. Those who are passionate about their job and the company they work for will do their best to satisfy their customers.

  • Too bad it is not available in my area :( .. forced to stick with Telstra.. Anybody had any luck getting a discount off or a plan upgrade with Telstra? I tried and it didn't work out..

  • +1

Just a note, if you're looking at ADSL2+, check TPG / Dodo (telstra port if possible) / iinet offerings. All 3 do "unlimited" data with Fetch and line rental for less than the $90 a month here. Some offer different items with that (Dodo for example give 5 free "paid" movies a month). Additionally, the Optus ADSL2+ network has been suffering from over subscription at many exchanges, with users on Optus DSLAM connections reporting extremely poor speeds from 4pm-midnight. I was with another ISP using Optus DSLAM and speed tests went from 9~11Mbps normally to between 0.8~1.1Mbps at those times every day. I've since gone with the $90 Optus Cable option (connected in Dec) and couldn't be happier.
