    Why choose this card?

    • +8

It's a FREE rewards credit card.

    • +12

The only bank I know of that will allow a balance transfer as a Cheque-to-Self.

      • Can someone confirm the Cheque-to-self applies to their credit cards?
Does the balance transfer have to be done immediately when applying for the card?

edit: found the answer the my second question

Your total balance transfers may not exceed 80% of your credit limit. The 0% p.a. interest rate on the Citibank Rewards Credit Card - Signature card applies for the first 9 months on balances you transfer with this offer at point of this application. At the end of the promotional period any outstanding transferred balance will revert to Citibank Rewards Credit Card - Signature variable Annual Percentage rate for cash advances, currently 21.74% p.a. This offer ends 28 February 2015. New credit card customers only.

        • +4

I've used this … had a cheque to self at 80% no problems.
The other reason to use this card is the 2 free airport lounges per year :)
          (priority pass)

        • @SmiTTy: Did you have the card for a certain period of time? They didnt let me get cheque to self (note, i have platinum not sig card)

        • @jaybmate:
nop I had it for less than a month when I applied for the convenience transfer

          I had the signature card

      • balance transfer as a Cheque-to-Self? Can you please explain what this means we can do? Thanks

        • cheque to self is a balance transfer rate with a cheque to yourself to use it on whatever you want (cash value)

        • +16

It means you can take out 80% of your credit limit at 0% interest for 6 months .. and put the money into your home loan :)

After 6 months, transfer it back and pay it off.

        • @frysie: Thanks. I'm not familiar with balance transfers or cheque to youself - if you wouldn't mind giving an example that'd be great. Cheers

        • @SmiTTy:

          Isn't it 9 months tho?

        • @twiz911:

they give you a cheque to cash to use it on what you like and you only pay the balance transfer rate instead of a cash advance. be smart with the money. invest and return it withing the 9 months… ie offset account etc.

        • +3

@kearnsy: It used to be 6 months, but yes with the current promotion it looks like they've upped it to 9 months.

        • @frysie: Wow so you can get a cheque (of 80% of your loan limit?) and then pay that into your offset, pay 0% interest, then repay it within the 9 months and pay nothing? Wow!

        • +1

@twiz911: you will have minimum repayments as per the T&C however at 0% interest,

          yes

        • +1

@SmiTTy: …rinse and repeat. Have just done this for 3x 6 month stints with Virgin Money (whose cards are issued by Citibank).

        • @Osprey06: Wow! What kind of credit limits do citibank offer? (obviously it depends on your credit rating)

        • @twiz911:

"At the end of the promotional period any outstanding transferred balance will revert to Citibank Rewards Credit Card - Signature variable Annual Percentage rate for cash advances, currently 21.74% p.a. This offer ends 28 February 2015. New credit card customers only."

seems like T&C restricts any loophole for exploitation. Based on that statement, it seems like it can only be done once as the promotional period ends feb next year.

i don't know how someone above managed to repeat this over 18 months as it's only intended for new customers, presumably for their first and last cash advance. (3x6 months)

        • @Osprey06: how to 3x pls?

          @avexdevil:
          @eatwell365:
          @twiz911:

Sorry guys - late replay. I don't check OzB regularly anymore.

I can't really give a 'how to'. To clarify, I don't have a Citibank CC (yet???), so can't say if it will apply to this card or not. I have a Virgin cc (which is issued by Citibank). I've had it for ages and for me it's a fee-free backup card, so I rarely use it - this doesn't work if you use the card regularly as you will end up paying interest on your purchases!!! Virgin offered me 6months 0% balance transfer (or 'cheque to self'), I accepted, made the monthly repayments as required and paid the outstanding before the 6 months. Before I'd even paid it back they offered again for the next 6 months (I'm about to start my third lot of 6 months). I estimate that I save about $170 in interest on my home loans for each period - obviously decreasing as I pay the loan down).

I can't find the wording at the moment, but the promotion usually says something about not being used in conjunction with other balance transfer promotions. I called them to clarify and they said that so long as I'd paid the old period back completely I can take advantage of the promotion (6mth @ 0%) again. I can see the promotion in my internet banking, under "rewards and offers" -> "my offers".

I was basing my loose statement on my experience and the general wording "no interest for 12 months on balance transfers" (transfers plural - but may be more than one transfer at time of opening, rather than consecutive transfers). @avexdevil is right, though. Looking at the T&C 0% will likely only apply to transfers made at time of opening…but you never know!

Maximum Credit Limit $100,000# (For the no annual fee card, others were same I think).

      • +1

        meh

the only real benefit is the 2 free priority passes and the balance transfer
If you have a theoretical limit of $10k for a credit card, which is insane (and if you can afford that much or higher, i assume you earn enough money not to bother with this) you can potential profit about $400 over 6 months

Its significant enough money to cover all your impulse buys from ozbargain over a year, but its not life changing.

the warranty protection is a joke because regardless of what manufacturers or retailers say, 1 year warranty is bullshit, consumer protection requires goods to last a reasonable amount of time. So if you can be bothered, you can fight for say a laptop repair beyond the 2 years the credit card protection offers.

As for price protection and the other one that replaces the lost stolen or damaged goods, 28 degrees' cover lasts longer.

Personally i pay off my card every month so i get charged nothing. THough if i forget its like a nominal $2-8 anyway. Small price to pay considering theyve saved me $180 repair costs after my wife broke her brand new phone screen.

A nice benefit of the citicard is the rewards points and if purchases made from the cheque to self can be covered by the Insurance, that would be a plus too. But as i said, you can get those with 28 degrees card

The real and only benefit is getting the $400 value and annual priority boarding passess or whatever

The downside is its not good for your credit rating to have too many credit cards, so rememeber that if you intend to take out a home loan in the future

        • +4

10k credit card limit is not unusual at all - I have a $23,500 limit on my CBA Mastercard and $15k on my ANZ Frequent Flyer Black (the minimum you can get with that card).

        • Do credit cards with limits below $10k still exist ?

        • @gikku:

Ofcourse! 1k on my 28 degrees!

      Well I'm out.

      • +4

You do not need that income to get the card, I got mine when my salary is much lower.

        • whats your salary? Im below it but not too far off

        • +3

          @jaybmate:

When I applied and was accepted, taxable income was $45,000/year.

Wouldnt be the signature card then. Probably the platinum card (similar cards but less $:points earnt)

        • @minty: Can you confirm whether Platinum or Signature?
Anyone else get the Signature card below 70k?

        • +1

          @jaybmate:

Signature. At the time I had been with Westpac for 10+ years, average spending 25-40k/yr, lowest 15k, highest 70k. Every bill paid in full. No loans, bad credits, etc.

      • +2

        I got it at 53000

  • Great card! Got mine through last offer as well!

  • They stopped allowing points from ATO bills other than that BEST rewards card if you pay it off each month!

    • I pay my business TAX/BAS via Coles Platinum credit card - you do earn points on ATO payments.

      • Coles cashback (discount on groceries) using flybuys is 1%* of $ spent
      • the ATO (well, Reserve Bank) credit card fee is only 0.42% (and a deductible expense, reducing business tax)

      $30K tax = $300 free groceries
The business pays the credit card surcharge ($126 less 30% saved tax = $88).

*I know Amex cards can provide up to 2% rewards for $ spent, but I find so many places either dont take Amex, or charge a surcharge way more than the 1% difference, I just don't bother.
Although have considered getting an Amex just for the promo offers posted here.

Also, the Coles Credit card provides a whopping 2 years price protection, if an item drops by more than $10 from the same retailer. I have a queue of things to claim cash back on.

      • -1

I'm referring to the Citibank cards…..of course I know the more than you on what to use for ATO bills and Credit cards but thats for another offer ;)….(mine for ATO are FREE)

        • I am keen to hear your advice on credit card surcharge free payments to ATO..

        • @systmworks:

Credit cards not the ATO fee

solid card. been using it for years, since they first offered the Gold card fee-free (then platinum, now signature).

  • no mention of priority pass

    • +3

That's strange. Signature should have free membership to Priority Pass and 2 Passes per annum.

Also, I don't like it if it's Veda's contingent. Lucky I've got all their cards I'll ever need.

Priority Pass is not currently available at any Australian airport other than Melbourne International Airport

WTF so useless then for anyone not in melbourne

      • that is sent to you in your welcome package, it is just a re-usable code which waives the yearly fee + gives you two free yearly visits.

        • Must the two free yearly visits be for the cardholder, or can one be used on a guest?

    • +2

The fee free version differs slightly from the full fee paying version in that it doesn't offer priority pass any more (people who applied the first time it was offered got it) and the full fee version also has a longer BT period. If it's not mentioned i don't think you will get it.

    • Includes priority pass. No questions asked - see T&C's for veda promotion.

  • Worst card, worst customer service, no customer responsibility, fake charges..Really, I have had extremely distasteful experiences with this company…BEWARE OF CITIBANK!!

    • +1

Lol, every bank has that sort of issues here and there. You need to avoid all banks if you have that sort of attitude. Because you never know when one of them will piss you off, it might start off good, then go bad. Best to stay away if you are so easily ticked off.

    • +3

Yet it is ironic Citibank Credit Cards are the best in Australia.

Nothing is like it. The Fee Free For Life was pioneered by them (Platinum) and their best card, is currently Citi Prestige which is a Visa Infinity card.

No other banks have that Visa Infinity at the moment, not AFAIK.

I would also argue their Home Loan was one of the cheapest although Heritage/Ubank are known to be lower too.

    • +7

Why is Daisy getting negged for sharing their experience? I can second that.

Partner was with citibank. They made it so painful to cancel her card. She had to go into branch twice with her passport, drivers licence and some utility bills to get it closed after 5+ phone calls. Random charges that they removed only when she queried, fees they said would be waved. Card not canceled when requested.

Because i'm a promo pimp I've had cards with CBA, ANZ, NAB, AMEX, ING, St George and Westpac. None have been like the experience with citibank. It is a standout for horrible service.

    • +3

Totally disagree. Do you work for another bank? This card has a dedicated 1800 phone number on the back and the call always gets answered with two rings. Had the Gold/Platinum/Signature cards for over 5 years, never had "fake charges". You get 1 QFF for every dollar you spend, but you get charged around $40 for the it. You get another year's warranty with $100 excess (mine is anyway). And it's free. I just closed my SW Everyday credit card as I was getting less with that card and paying $79 per year. In short never had one issue with them. Highly recommended.

      • +4

@abacus Surely just because someone complains about a card, they don't have to be accused of working for a competitor. Do you work for Citibank?

I've had the Citibank card for maybe 7 or 8 years. I also have transaction accounts and savings accounts with them. The service is not great - I'd say they're probably in the bottom third of other financial services providers I've ever used. Example 1: never credited me the 10,000 Qantas FFP for signing up for the Citibank Plus promotion, told me it would take a few months to investigate and then never got back to me. Example 2: when I've had blatantly fraudulent charges (amount exceeding my credit limit from a country I haven't visited in 8 years), they told me that it will have to go through a 90-day investigation procedure before they can assure me I won't be charged (contrast to Amex's response on a separate incident - they immediately put a credit on the account and advised there would be no liability). I had a mate who also had fraudulent charges put on his Citibank card and they charged him interest on the fraudulent charge while they were investigating. He had to call a number of times to get the interest reversed.

Other than those two specific incidents, the general level of service is mediocre at best. It's certainly not best practice. I wouldn't accuse Citibank of putting fake charges on the card though - it's more likely that someone else has placed fraudulent charges on the card and they haven't managed to pick it up.

Having said that, it's an excellent card which you get for free, which is why I'm still a customer. The product itself makes it worthwhile to put up with the so-so service.

        • Tongue in cheek, no need to get offended. If there are fraudulent transactions going through your account then of course it will take time to get sorted. I just had Polish Airline tickets for $2M go through my Signature card, I rang them up, the phone was answered by a human in one ring, the transaction was disputed and that was that. Not the Banks fault, it's called fraud. If you go over your limit etc and the rules say you get charged etc then you can call and request they let you off, which they do every couple of years. But that's not "fake charges".

        • +4

          Fraud was $2K not $2M.

        • @abacus:

i was about to say can we be mates if you had a card with $2m limit

that being said, i dont think Citibank cares about Customer NPS scores
ive heard similar nightmares from their homeloan and commercial business customers as well

28degrees refunded my money first instantly THEN did their investigation. Bloody good service

        • +1

@abacus: M is the new k. You were correct.
          explanation

        • +1

@eatwell365: learn something everyday on OzB

      • If this is the speed you're getting for Gold/Platinum/Signature, then prepare for a better experience if you have the Prestige (Visa Infinity) card.

I agree with Abacus. Never had a issue with their cards.

But I will concede one thing, their Citi Concierge and their phone banking as well as their internet banking are far from desireable.

I actually currently am having an issue with my internet banking that is more than 2 years old and they're only looking into it now. Needless to say, I made an official complaint.

  • Citibank has been quite generous. Lately I got a flyer saying that I'm now entitled to 0% on purchases for next 6 months (I don't even need to apply for that) and they gave me the option to balance transfer at 0% for 6 months (this I will need to apply and I can simply request for the BT amount to be send to me by cheque, doesn't have to be a transfer of balance from another card).

    • I was in-store yesterday trying to sort out the other veda offer which I was having problems with and they offered me a personal loan type arrangement @ 1.9% for 18 months.

  • Yeah citibank has pretty terrible customer service, I still use their signature card and every year have to call up and threaten to cancel to get the annual fee waived.

    • +13

They have terrible customer service because you have to call up and threaten to cancel to get something for free that wasn't free for life when you signed up for it?

      • Probably should have explained it better in regards to the terrible customer service. More to do with missing rewards points and an interest free period that expired a few months before it was supposed to.

  • +2

This is a great credit card deal. I've been using this with my ING Orange Everday account. Purchases under $100 with paywave, I use my ING card, anything else I use my Citibank card.
The Citibank phone app isn't very good, but they have made some changes to improve the experience.

  • +2

You must earn a minimum of $75K per year? Am I not on the OzBargain website?

    • +9

maybe you can demonstrate to them that the top up in savings from ozbargain is equivalent to the 75k per year income ;-)

    • +17

Pretty sure earning more than $75k is not a requirement to trying to save money

  • A great CC offer if you are after the reward points and FREE Priority Pass x 2 entries per year

  • +3

Woohoo Credit rating: Very Good !

Now to take out multiple loans and credit cards and default on some payments…

    • +1

How do you check your credit rating?

      • I'd like to know as well, do you have to purchase a Veda report?

      • Just go through the application process. The first step asks you for a few details then the 2nd step will give you your score. Don't go any further as that will start the credit card application process.

Haha I got only a good…. must be all the other 50 credit cards I have out!

        • Yeah i tried that, but it does not bring up a score, just says something like try again and/or go to Veda to find your score, when i go their it looks like a have to purchase a report or score.

        • @tight-a55: Looks like you may not have a store on Veda or have the wrong details which they cannot match to.

        • @tight-a55:

This happened to me too with the other Citi offer.

I rang veda they said it was a citi issue and tried to sell me a credit report, rang citi they said it was veda issue.

Applied to veda for the free credit report, it arrived yesterday. It shows 2 requests by citi against my report for a vedascore on the dates the website application didn't work for me.

Went in to Citi in person to complain and apparently they'll give me the same deal so I filled out the paper work and submitted it, will see what happens.

        • @natslovR: I did that yesterday. How long did it take for approval?

        • @dasher22: It took a LONG time.

I got approval this morning. I originally applied on the 16-Dec. I made clear to the guy i was dealing with when i needed the money by (now) and he said there'd be no problems, i questioned his timelines considering christmas and ny holidays but he was confident there would be no problem.

Anyway it took weeks. I escalated a couple of times and from what I can tell my application didn't properly get submitted till i escalated (31-Dec) - i know this because their application ids have the date in them.

Apparently it was in some funny 'cancelled' state. Escalated again on Tuesday and Wednesday and it was approved first thing this morning.

The thing to be aware of is that they need to issue a cheque, that the cheque can't be issued until the credit card has been created (over night tonight supposedly) and then it takes up to ten business days

So the money i was hoping to spend this week I probably won't be spending till end of January :-(

        • @natslovR: Thanks for sharing your experience. My app seems to be in progress. They called me this afternoon to get some more info. Hopefully it will be approved by the end of this week.

        • @natslovR:

Did they say anything about reversing the credit record on veda?

I am in the same boat but I'm more concerned about my credit record (which has reached an all time low despite my previous excellent credit rating). I'm looking to bring in my credit report to Citibank tomorrow and asking them for a statement saying the request for was unsuccessful hence they should delete those requests on my credit record.

        • +2

@dsafew: That's not how the credit rating system works, unfortunately (and this is something that people need to consider very seriously before applying for these deals). The act of seeking credit itself is (potentially) seen as a negative. It can be interpreted as a sign of financial stress. For the OzBargainer, it may be more likely a sign that we're hunting for a bargain…but the normal person doesn't apply for a new credit card every 6 months (when the next 'receive xx Qantas FF points' deal comes along).

Besides which, Citibank will tell you to talk to Veda - they're the ones that are managing your credit record, not Citibank. Not all lenders use Veda ratings, either - and the marketing around this product suggests to me that Citibank are using Veda for this particular card, but use another scoring agency for other (non-Veda marketed) products.

This link seems to be for people who have a default record on their rating (not sure if you do, or not), but it (or something related) may be relevant to you:
