Rock N Roll Extreme Chain Lube $10.95 for 16oz Bottle + $8.95 Shipping @ The Bicycle Store

100

Hi all,

Just got a good deal on some bike lube and thought I'd share with others.
http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/11457/26037/cam00219.jp…

I was ordering a bunch of bicycle parts and also needed some Lube.

I settled on the 4oz Rock N Roll Extreme Chain Lube for $10.95.

http://www.bicyclestore.com.au/rock-n-roll-extreme-chain-lub…

In the Bottle Size drop down box, there was no additional price for the bigger 16oz bottle, this is confirmed at the check out price too.

For example on this product, if you choose a bigger bottle there is an increment in price.

I selected the 16oz anyway and paid the 4oz price fully expecting the retailer to send me the 4oz bottle. However the attached photo is shows the 16oz product received today.

The 16oz bottle goes for around $30 at other places.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ROCK-N-ROLL-EXTREME-16OZ-BICYCLE-…

So even if you buy just the lube and pay the flat rate postage, its comes to just under $20 for a $30 bottle.

This applies to the other two Rock N Roll Lube products as well, including the Gold premium lube.

Its free shipping if you purchase over $99 so the deal is even better if you have other items that you may already have wanted to buy.

Cheers.

I read the title and thought it was some sort of sex aid for Biker gangs.

    • Biker gangs….bangs???

Rock n Roll lubes are the bomb. I use the Gold. Works a treat. I normally buy it from Pushys who often have free shipping weekends. They do a bottle of the 16oz Gold for $26.99 and the 16oz Extreme for $19.99. So on a one bottle purchase, there's not much in it with this deal. If you can pick up from their store, you're on a real winner. Unfortunately, I'm based in Brisbane.

  • How does Rock n Roll compare to Squirt?

  • How is this compare to WD-40 ? I still have more than 1/2 of the can to go.

      • Not true: WD40 does contain a light lubricating oil and can be used on bike chains.

Not that I recommend it either, but it is certainly better than nothing. Also can be used for removing the old dirty oil.
Plain old household oil works too. Or clean engine oil.

The big mistake people make is thinking they need to oil the outside of the chain, when its only the inside of the link rollers that needs it.
So after applying oil, wipe the chain with a clean rag.

Fancy bike chain oils are useful in a dirty environment, e.g. off-road, where they will attract less dirt.
But they may need more frequent application.

        • Used to just pop the whole chain in a pail of oil and then soak overnight then pat dry the next day with a cloth which I will use to oil other garden tools like shears and spades. Then again I never had the luxury to buy expensive bikes you see in the cbd..

        • WD40 is just too light a lube, and wears out too quickly. Other oil will be better.

        • yeah I would prob rather use some sort of cooking oil before I resort to WD40

    • I'm not sure if you're serious but just in case you are, WD-40 is a 'water dispersant' - hence the W D. It's not a lubricant. Spraying it on your chain might help clean up the chain but it doesn't lubricate it. The two component killers are component friction and dirt. Rock n Roll lubricates as well as cleans, so it will prolong the life of your components as well as keep them clean (which also in turn prolongs the life of your components).

In other words, WD-40 is probably better than nothing at all but you can't compare it to a lube because it's not one - apples and oranges.

      • Components? the only thing chain oil lubricates is the chain pins and rollers. You don't want it on the cogs.

Excess cog wear is caused by worn-out (stretched) chains, which may be due to poor lubrication, or just lots of use.

BTW, a 4 oz bottle should last for years, or you are using it wrong.

        • For someone that commutes a 4oz bottle will last 6-8 months, significantly less if you're riding in wet conditions.

As for using it correctly, from the manufacturer's page:

Apply the lube on the chain, over the top of the cog. Let
a nice flow of lube go onto the chain (don’t be cheap). Remember you’re going to clean and lube the chain in
          one step.

Of course it's in their interests that you use as much of this stuff as possible. But regardless, I've found that I start to hear chain noise after about 3-4 weeks of moderate use on my velocipede and need to reapply. I use the gold variant. It's addictive!!!

It's not a lubricant. Spraying it on your chain might help clean up the chain but it doesn't lubricate it.

It is a light lubricant. It will lubricate a chain, but not for very long!

Casual cyclists might not exert much torque on the chain, so a light lubricant that's frequently applied may be acceptable. It's probably better than metal-on-metal with added grit or sand from the road anyway. Of course, proper chain lube would be much better.

In other words, WD-40 is probably better than nothing at all but you can't compare it to a lube because it's not one - apples and oranges.

Lubrication is first on their list. Of course it's a lubricant - otherwise it won't stop squeaks, which aren't caused by water or dirt. It's just not a long-lasting/high-torque lubricant.

        http://www.wd40.com.au/wd-40_faqs

Use WD-40 Multi-Use Product on your bike to clean, degrease and lubricate your chain, derailleur, gears, cogs, and moving parts.

        • Even engine grease is best in some circumstances.
As stated above: biking in dusty dry conditions, where dust and sand stick to certain lubricants means you may prefer one thing.
In wet conditions or commuting something else.
Different strokes for different folks. Also way too many choices.

        • @marcozmitch: I would assume any cyclist who would even consider using WD40 is a casual cyclist, which WD40 could be suitable for.

More serious cyclists would already know what lube to use.

It's like … if you see someone asking if an Ozito drill is good, they're probably a light DIYer where it would be perfectly suitable. You'll never see a contractor asking if an Ozito drill is suitable for building a house. :)

    • Thank you all for the input :)

  • Unfortunately, seems like they're out of the 16oz stock for Blue and Gold, and Red comes up with an additional $24.00. Ah well.
