it's possible these could actually end up being even less than $20.

I'll take a punt and say that they'll be $19.98!

  • Hi, New to this, I read on the DS site that its "not available online only" ..i assume its a typo..also are all the products under the "nothing over $20" banner included..thanks for your post

    • +1

That's incredible, no-one can possibly be "new" to cheap eneloops on ozbargain!! :P

      • ive been on OB for a few years now, and i was NEW to them as far as 3 months ago.. :-\

      • Yea, I am new to them but I have been watching for a short time but now its maybe on spec, I decided to ask a few q's…:)

  • do you need a special charger for those? what's the reason why I see them get posted all the time here??

    • best to use a smart charger rather than a timer charger to prevent overcooking these (or any batteries for that matter)

If you do a search for previous eneloops you'll find lots of discussions about the types of chargers people use, and the lacrosse and maha powerex chargers come up in discussions often.

I own the c9000 (http://www.videoguys.com.au/Shop/p/3974/maha-powerex-mh-c900…) and am pretty happy with it.

    • From other posts, they have more integrity than other rechargeable batteries having a longer recharge lifespan

    • +2

You don't need a special charger. They're posted all the time because $20 for 8 is an incredible deal, one of the best prices worldwide even.

They're very good batteries. The original NiMHs would lose charge in a few weeks/months, making you have to charge again. Sanyo released the first eneloops promising 70% of capacity after a year and 1000 recharges, calling them "low-self discharge (LSD)". Since then, other LSD batteries have been released, but Eneloop is still the best.

Current eneloops allow 1800 recharges, and retain 70% of battery after 5 years. Quite amazing I'd say!

Grab 1-2 packs of these, get rid of all non-LSD nimhs and alkalines in your house.

      • +1

Current eneloops allow 1800 recharges, and retain 70% of battery after 5 years. Quite amazing I'd say!

Current 'Panasonic' Eneloops (Chinese made) are actually rated to 2100 cycles and 65% retention now!
And although you don't need a special charger as such, you wouldn't just whack them in any old timed only unit!

  • How long has these 8pk Eneloop for $20 deals been, like since 2010/2011? The price never drops further over the years?

    • I think one of my posts from 3 years ago may have been one of the first (if not the first) DSE $20 eneloop deals:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/52714

      Ah the memories…

      • +1

Ozbargain community is taking these Eneloop deals for granted now. One day Dicksmith will stop putting these on sale and many people will be regretting it.

    • +4

General inflation but the price remaining static = price decrease.

  • It's also very likely they may not actually sell these for under $20.

Last time I posted a DSE bargain, which was timed, the sale did not match any of the items in the banner. They do not have their sh*t together.

  • +4

I think we need a wiki entry for eneloops

  • What is the opinion of the overnight charger? Any good or is the quick charger better?

    • +1

      crap

buy a decent charger, i.e nitecore d4 etc

    • The one supplied on this deal is a crap timer based charger!

    • Thanks guys appreciate it.

    • +1 with the nitecore d4
I've just received mine a week ago from Banggood and it works perfectly.

I like it how it's a smart charger and will charge 750mA when you have two batteries.
it lowers it and distributes it equally to 375mA when you have 3 or 4 simultaneously.
you can even lower it to charge it safely for AAA, 10440 and 16340 batteries to avoid shortening the life cycle.

      • How much did you pay for the nitecore d4 at banggood? They are $44.82 now. US$27.80 at Aliexpress.

        • +4

$33 at banggood with the coupon code e395d5

        • Thanks

Oops, sorry I clicked the negative button. My apologies.

          Ed- can you fix that?

You can click on 'votes' and revoke your vote there.

  • How do you even pronounce the name of this product? lol

  • ''Overnight' charger? Does it mean it actually take a whole night to just charge four batteries? Sounds a bit long…
I'm asking a genuine qs here.

    • +1

I believe by overnight they assume 8-12 hour charging

Lets say a battery is 2000mah.. Depending on who you listen to, the charging rate should be half of that (1000mah).. While others say it needs to be slightly more so that the charger registers the battery that it's full, while some manufacturers put the recommended charge rate and time (ie at 200mah it would take 10 hours to charge (slightly longer on account of chemical nature of batteries and not 100% conversion of charge). If you charge at 2000mah (1C) charging time is 1hr. While at 4000mah (2C) charging time is 30 minutes. I believe the maha manual recommends not charging at too low a rate so the unit can successfully detect when a battery is fully charged.

The faster you charge a battery (ie 15 minute chargers) the more you cook it and the lower the batteries capacity becomes. I strongly discourage using fast chargers where possible because they reduce a batteries lifespan and they get quite hot during charging.

I also had a DSE smart charger (which once overheated a battery to the point the plastic cover was melting and I burnt myself removing the battery) which started on a slow charge for 20 minutes, then charged at high speed, then slowed down and trickle charged the battery the rest of the way…

In my experience charging eneloops at 0.5C (1000mah) seems to work quite well and haven't had any issues.

  • Guys these are great batteries. Putty about the name though…

    • +6

      putty? Are you from NZ?

      • +1

        hahaha
oi brew do you wana a hiding

  • Oh great just what most people here need :p more eneloops

Need a charger to go with them….

    • +1

Yep, that's a pretty good charger. Though it has been as low as $23 previously, and often stays at around $30, so I'd say wait for a better price.

Some other cheaper alternatives - All smart chargers with 4x individual channels:
      Sony BCG-34HLD
      Panasonic BQ392, BQ391
      Panasonic BQ-CC17
      Sony MQR06

Check ebay, you can get the above for ~$20 delivered.

      • Thanks for this list.

That would be Sanyo not Sony MQR06.

Amazon have the Panasonic BQ-CC17 with 4 batteries for $20.17 USD which with delivery comes to $32.65 AUD
        http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JHKSMJU/ref=ox_sc_act_ti…

        • Or Masters still have the older Sanyo quick charger MQR06 & Sanyo 4xAA batteries for $30!

        • Sorry typo! It's Sanyo like you said. Fair deal for $32 with 4 AA.

  • no more Sanyos?

    • +1

AAs you can still get the UOMO or ROUGE, or Masters have the standard WHITE.
Haven't seen AAAs in Sanyo for a while except what's at Masters also!

      • ill have a browse at their site, thanks man!

  • YES AAA! Thanks mate!

  • The Panasonic AAA (800mAh) are better than the Sanyo (750mAh). I have both and can confirmed the new version last a bit longer, although it's made in China. The built quality looks the same.

    • Most of us aren't worried about how they perform today, it's how they'll still perform in a year or two… or five!

  • Anyone have experience using a Nitecore charger with these? I have just got a Nitecore i4 (mainly for 18650s) and I know it can handle NiMH, but can it charge these OK?

    • Yes, these are normal NiMH batteries (they just last longer), the i4 will charge them fine.

I have the Nitecore D4 and I use it for my 18650s and eneloops.

      • Awesome, thanx for the response.

    • +1

      yup
i use my nitecore i4 for my aaa, aa, 18650, 18350 and 18500 batts. best charger ever. I however never charge a single battery , be it 18650 or aaa, minimum will be two. the reason for this is nitecore charges at 700mah which is fine for this battery 2000mah (50% rule of thumbs) but i dont mind waiting a bit longer to charge 4 batts at once just to be on the safe side

      extracted from user manual:
      1. Nitecore strongly recommends that AAA, AAAA and 10440 Li-ion
batteries are not charged alone in the i4 charger. When using only one
charging slot, the i4's current automatically sets to 750mA, which
exceeds the maximum current range of most AAA, AAAA and 10440
Li-ion batteries. Failing to follow to this recommendation can result in
excess heat, battery damage or even explosion, causing property damage
      and/or personal injury.
      2. Due to the aforementioned reasons, it is recommended that a minimum of
two (2) AAA or 10440 rechargeable batteries are placed into the charging
slots together. When charging two batteries in the i4, be sure to always
place them in either slot 1 and 3 or slot 2 and 4.

      • Great info, thanx a bunch. :)

      • "Due to the aforementioned reasons"

I don't get it. What reason is there for using slots 1+3 or 2+4?

        • +1

good question.. i was a little confused when i read the manual the first time. I apologise for skipping this part, as this is my interpretation of it, dont want to get negged for it :)

          again, extracted from user manual:

Note: When four batteries are charged at the same time, each charging
slot will receive a maximum output current of 375mA. When one or two
batteries are charged, each slot will receive a maximum output current of
          750mA.

this actually states it more clearly that 1 or 2 batteries will output 750mah EACH slot, but why is this recommended in the other section? So i did a little test and i prove this by charging my sony vtc5 18650 batt that it would charge faster than 1 and 3 combination. I cant explain why but i think putting it in 1 and 3 will 'trick' the charger somehow thinking this is 3 batteries (at least) and start outputting 375mah into all slots

  • I still don't have my pink Eneloops from a week ago! Order confirmed. Money taken. Not been shipped!

    • Rang in and told it would be processed today and I would be emailed a tracking number. The reason being there was a "glitch" in processing. That was hours ago though and I'm not confident anything's going to happen today. I've had plenty of orders go through no issue but this one is quickly becoming a pain.

  • Looks like it does not include delivery.

    • Free delivery till midnight.

  • Thanks OP - 8 AA and 8 AAA for $40 - good times!

    • +1

You could've bought another pack for only $10 more if you'd used the $10 off over $50 spend!
Except that it was actually yesterday's deal! Too many Dick deals to keep track of!

But does anyone else get a security warning on the Dick Smith checkout page? It's scary when there's no lock :o

  • +1

Now what the hell am i going to do with 16 AAA and 16 AA Eneloop batteries!

      • I tried that with mine for the automatic opening rubbish bin i have that takes D's… just not enough juice :/

        • They worked great in my Maglight and wireless doorbell.

        • These Eneloop C & D adapters aren't any good, you need the ones that can take 2 or 3 AAs in parallel to give it some decent power!

  • 2x 8 AA + 1 x 8 AAA + HPM 3m Extension Lead - $15 from "TRY15" = $51.92 delivered

    • I bought the exact same ozBargain bundle :) thanks for the suggestion of the extension lead, was hunting around for something ~ $6!

  • Now that's a supercharged deal! Good one OP.
