This tablet is Dell Certified Refurbished and comes in the Dell Outlet box and carries the SAME WARRANTY AS A BRAND NEW DELL. Dell Certified Refurbished products were new systems sold and then returned because the customer either changed their mind during the Dell 21 day return period, there was a mix up on delivery, etc. Dell then tests each laptop, re-installs the operating system, and repackages them. Most systems will look like NEW, however it is possible that they may have minor blemishes from handling but that will not affect performance.

$35 cheaper price and full 1 year warranty compared to the last posted Dell Venue deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/152401

    Should add - Manufacturer refurbished

  • Tempted. Stylus is shown in picture but I expect it is separate purchase - and uses a AAAA battery (hard to find and pricey) - http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=au&l…

    • lol I read somewhere that it uses that battery and I thought they had just done a typo adding an extra A!

    • +2

Officeworks have them for $6.69. I wouldnt call that expensive…
      http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/energizer-aaa…

      • That's good to know. I bought a drawing pad with stylus few years back (pre-Wacom days) and only found out post purchase that it used AAAA batteries and they were rare as hen's teeth and pricey back then compared to even AAA ones. Would pop out batteries to reduce drain, risk of leak from lack of use and was a pain …

      • +5

Or some easy DIY on a 9V battery and get 6x AAAA for around $1 each.
        http://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-Get-AAAA-BATTERIES-OU…
(Warning: may only works on Duracell and do it at your own risk)

    • +2

Just open a 9v battery and you'll find 6 AAAA batteries inside. Be careful of polarity though, it may be opposite to normal cells. Look up YouTube.

      • This is not true of all 9v batteries. Some have a number of flat cells.

      • oops wrong battery

      • The cells inside 9V batteries are a bit shorter, so it may or may not work. The positive terminal is much shorter.

    • Those batteries last forever in stylus'. I've only just replaced the battery in my Lenovo tablet - that I've had for two years now.

  • So no MS Office included?

    • +1

      no.

    • in theory, office should come as standard due to the fact it was supposed to be free with the windows licence on all under 9 inch win tablets.
however my experience suggest the office activation came in a separate sheet of paper in the box, hence if that paper is missing, the office will remain trial.

      • -3

It's Windows that's free, not Office.

        • You're kinda wrong, but the blog-post doesn't exist anymore.

          http://web.archive.org/web/20140328053957/http://blogs.windo…

        • @hugs: lol Even that one deleted(!) blog doesn't even say Office is free.

        • Whoever negged me - whatever gets you off…

        • +1

@McFly: You probably got negged because you were wrong. Office is free for all Win8 tablets under 10".

          http://www.pcworld.com/article/2040823/tiny-windows-8-tablet…

Windows CFO Tami Reller also said that all small-screen Windows 8 tablets will ship with a free copy of Office Home & Student 2013

          http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/5/4397972/windows-8-tablets-f…

          http://techland.time.com/2013/06/05/free-microsoft-office-fo…

It comes free in the form of an Office key on a sheet of paper that comes in the box.

        • @eug: If you can find a primary source saying that is the case then you are a better surfer than me. (Other than reports or reports of reports of what Tami Reller might have said.)

Also, it would be great if you could explain why even the latest small tablets include 1 year of Office 365 Personal or in some cases only just a trial and hardly any come with O H&S 13 (lol OH&S.)

Not to mention that this exact deal comes without any Office at all…

        • @McFly:
Microsoft isn't going to be publishing it on their website. We know for a fact Windows is free for small tablets via the SST program, but it isn't on their public website.

Also, it would be great if you could explain why even the latest small tablets include 1 year of Office 365 Personal

Perhaps they've changed with the latest ones then. The latest I've bought is the Asus T100 which does come with free Office. This Dell Venue 8 Pro, which is still a current model, when purchased new, definitely comes with free MS Office 2013 Home & Student. So did every other small Win8 tablet I was looking at.

Not to mention that this exact deal comes without any Office at all…

Yes, because it's a refurb. When a customer returns it, Dell won't know if they've used the key or not, so they don't include it when it is resold. A new one will come with it.

        • -1

          @eug: I.e. "I can't."

        • @McFly: Microsoft does not publish that sort of information. It doesn't mean it's not true. Ignore the evidence if you wish.

        • @eug: lol There is no evidence - that is my point. In fact the only evidence points to it not being true.

        • @McFly: ?
The fact that so many tablets DID come with Office 2013 included is not evidence to you?

        • @eug: No.

        • @McFly: Oh, you're that kind of person. OK then, suit yourself.

        • @eug: Yep, I'm the kind of person that wants actual evidence of things. I thought that was pretty obvious when I asked for actual evidence. What next I need to prove that aliens don't exist? This is tiring - either or put up or shut up, as the saying goes.

        • @McFly: There is plenty of evidence, you just choose to ignore it.

First, that guy from MS said Office will be included.

Every tablet after that, up to the T100 as far as I know, has come with MS Office 2012 H&S included.

That's enough evidence for me, because all the tablets I have purchased have come with it.

If you choose not to believe that these tablets come with Office 2013 included, then you're just blindly ignoring the evidence.

          Suit yourself.

        • @eug: I'm blindly ignoring evidence. Sigh.
PS. lol It was a woman… and she didn't say it.

  • and with your free US$5 ebay voucher……

  • I assume keyboard case isn't included? Anyone got a cheap source for that? Seems like ~$100 on ebay.

    I wasn't really expecting to spend $185 this morning…

Can this tablet play 1080p video on a TV? Does it have a HDMI port?

    • as far as i am aware, the Toshiba Encore (Gen 1) 8 has mini HDMI
that is the selling feature of that tablet
It can be easily converted to a dual screen 'desktop' netbook for office processing and net browsing
      BUT
the encore has Loads of bugs at this stage.
I got one and i dont recommend it until they fix those bugs

      • I got one of the 64gb Encore's and have not experienced any bugs - given how useful the HDMI out is for turning this 8" tablet into a fully fledged PC (with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse), as well as for putting movies etc. up on a big screen whilst travelling, I would class this as an essential feature.

Tried out the Miracast streaming options but, from my experience, the lag and loss of quality meant it wasn't very practical. That and on most occasions you require a separate adapter.

        • Did u upgrade to the latest firmware ?
The 1.3 firmware has camera start up bug then once up to 1.6
It ruin my 32 g s wifi connection, can't adjust brightness.
It also has unstable bug prevent fully charge.. List goes on

BTW the last deal wasn't updated. I paid US$185 delivered for a Dell-refurbished black one in July.

The warranties are worthless as they are not international.

    • +1

Yea, everyone seems to be saying that you need some 3yr extended warranty for international service.

In that case, might as well get the refurb direct from Dell Australia for ~$240 (includes Office and an actual 1yr warranty). I don't think I can be comfortable paying >$100 for a refurb with no warranty, as cheap as it is.

  • +2

Good price, even for a refurb.

Paid $300 for mine in an ozbargain a while back, can't say it was worth $300.

The texture on its back is a deceptively rubbery-looking texture but it's actually not. It feels rough on the hand and isn't rubbery at all and doesn't let you to get a good grip on it at all (slides off). I find it very difficult to hold in one hand while I am walking unless I am also planting my thumb on the screen (which leads to unwanted results).

CPU Performance wise it is fine, especially after you download the DELL updates which speeds it up tremendously. Does everything I want to use it for, which is reading novels/manga, watching anime (1080p but no point), torrents, and visual novels. Would very much like a physical button to enable/disable touchscreen but not supported in win8, will have to wait for Windows 9. There is no HDMI port. Has microSD slot. Mini-USB can power USB sticks but Cannot power USB harddrives (!).

Screen is good. Obviously doesn't look as good as my 10" Acer W700 IPS screen, or iPad, but the screen is workable. It is what it is, a light-weight 8 inch win8 tablet with reasonable power and battery, but I feel the Lenovo Miix 2 8 is a better product overall, weighing 50grams less.

    • +1

so instead of walking with phone in hand, will we be bumping intto people with 8 inch tablets now?

      • that's how I use mine while I am walking the dog. heck it's difficult holding the thing in portrait even while sitting down.

      • i dont think so, i think people will be watching their wrist while walking now. thanks to the new wave of smartwatches :)

  • bought one from the last deal $200 delivered, this definitely a deal. positive from me!

the only thing that i dont like about this tablet is, you CANNOT charge and connect USB at the same time, only one MicroUSB port. Even when you purchase and OTG cable that claimed will charge while using USB devices, most probably it wont work (i have bought 2 OTG cables from eBay and both didnt work for me)

There's workaround that you can do if you willing to wait (purchase from China/DX) and do bit of DIY Hack, to create a cable that allows you to charge and use USB peripherals at the same time.

  • Android has google maps so I can use my tablet as a big gps, I cant find google maps for windows 8.1, does it not exist?

    • +1

download here maps, you can download and use the maps offline too

  • I bought one of these from Walmart in the states last month. It comes with office as standard pre installed and a licence key on a Microsoft certificate. 8" is a little too small for a full windows OS tablet. Text is quite small in documents. I returned it and swapped it over for the Asus T100 transformer. Much better option. Paid a little extra but was worth it for the larger screen and included keyboard dock.

  • Can confirm that they normally come with full office version. I bought one a couple months back from Walmart in the states only to return it for an Asus transformer t100. 8" is just too small for a full windows OS tablet. Documents are hard to work with as text is quite small. I'd recommend minimum 10" on any tablet that runs a full windows operating system

  • +1

Own one of these, have to say it's one of the best, if not the best out of all the 8inch windows tabs (Asus Vivotab Note 8, Toshiba Encore, Acer Iconia W4).

  • How did everyone process shipping to Aus? eBay notifies that I have to contact the seller regarding shipping here but he has turned off the ability to contact him. Any help would be appreciated.
