Item condition says "New, Open Box", so I understand Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013 is not included

      just read the description again,
•NOTE: Only items in "New" Condition include Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013. Tablets in "New Other / Open Box", Like New", and other conditions do NOT include Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013.

Must be direct from dell, they must be dumping stock straight from the production line.
in any case, if you have subscribed to Office 365 like I have, and pay a monthly fee then you can use 1 of the 5 licences on this device.

These are pretty good, especially for this price.

      A mini-review of 8" Windows 8.1 pro tablets:

They are pretty fantastic, but if people are buying this expecting it to replace an iPad or Android tablet, I'm not sure that's this product's niche.

I find that Windows 8 is considerably better productivity wise, but not as good personal entertainment wise. These differences are reflected in the contents of the app store, and the fact that you can actually run legitimate Office on these things.

Pro-wise, this tablet, along with the Dell Active Stylus, is a fantastically useful tool for keeping things jotted down in OneNote, and once you pair a bluetooth keyboard with it you can do anything you can do with an actual laptop, so long as you're able to deal with it being an 8" screen. You can run any browser you want, any desktop media device you want. You can get a USB adapter and plug in literally any USB device you can run on your computer. That's cool.

Con-wise, unfortunately, the Windows app store kinda sucks. There's no official Google apps for Windows 8. No YouTube, no Google Maps (but there is Bing!), no Google Play Music, no whatever, although you can run them all in the browser, of course. The Facebook app is a generation behind of the other app stores, and niche apps are basically god-awful or nowhere to be found. Games are somewhat lacking.

Basically, this machine has half the polish but twice the productivity of an iOS/Android device. Definitely grab one if you're more interested in work than play.

      • Basically, this machine has half the polish but twice the productivity of an iOS/Android device.

I actually think the metro UI is more polished than Android tablets, if we're looking at stock experiences. App-wise, I agree with you - it's just "ok". All the interesting non-mainstream apps are usually on Android and iOS.

Productivity - beats all the others easily if MS Office is what you use. I love OneNote.

      • Considering it is a full windows 8 tablet. You can run bluestack to play android games and even apps. I guess that should cover the entertainment bit that windows market place is still lacking.

        Get them here www.bluestacks.com

        • Is it usable on Atoms/Win8.1 yet? It wouldn't work at all on my ThinkPad Tablet 2 which was also an Atom.

        • @eug: On my previously owned ASUS ME400C, it's barely usable. However both the Tablet 2 and ME400C uses the previous gen atom processor Z2xxx series. On Z3740 processor, which is 2x-3x faster, I may guess an acceptable speed for blue stack.

        @hugs

Have you actually used or seen reviews of this device.

It his minimal productivity "apps" (and I know you're thinking iPad style apps) because it just works. Load a website with flash and it works, no need for an app. Want to get on youtube, it just works, no need for an app.

And for entertainment, well even my Surface RT can play just about any media I throw at it, oh and I can load it off of a thumb drive or network share easy enough.

What about gaming? Well this is a full fledged version of windows. There are youtube videos of people playing portal, portal 2, borderlands, FIFA, heck all sorts of games will run on this thing.

From someone that actually owns one, as well as an iPad and an android tablet I can tell you this thing is pretty damn sweet. It makes up for all of the Windows RT shortfalls, and more.

Best couple of hundred dollars you'll ever spend, and the Dell tablet is the best on the market if you ever plan on attempting to use a stylus with the thing.

        • +2

lol but will you be as cool as Apple users?… :P see you have both so you can say that u use your ipad in public while at home you cheat on your ipad with this hussy called a dell windows device!… baaah!

        • +1

          @scud70:

          You're not cool unless you're using a Nokia 3310.

        • @scrimshaw: true…. im not cool! :(

        • I own an Asus VivoTab Note 8, which is also an 8", bay-trail atom powered, active-digitiser-equipped Win8.1 tablet. (Side note: I bought it because the digitser on the Asus is better than the Dell, since it's Wacom inductive tech rather than the AAAA powered pen the Dell uses.)

When I said 'gaming', I more meant touch-screen gaming angry-birds style. Yes, you can actually install Steam on this thing and game that way, but that's a little harder to do while you're on the train to work. :)

I did mention that it was specifically app-store apps that were lacking. The Windows software ecosystem is obviously far and away more populous than any other "app store", but it's also not quite as targeted towards instant gratification.

Suffice to say every point you raise is basically correct, but as with every device out there it's a bit of a trade-off.

      • eh, the whole point of the other devices using apps was because the other devices were too small or too weak and slow to render the full websites.
This Dell Venue 8 Pro along with any other windows 8.1 device does not require those apps because they run the full websites.

Of course this machine replaces both ipads and android devices, but can the other devices replace this one?

Darn good deal for this price.

    • whoops. responded to wrong comment.

      Only 1280 x 800 screen res tho - was hoping for 1920x1080

  • hmmm, tempted to buy it just to put in the bag. jb hifi selling these for $459

  • which VER? A00 or A01?

    • It doesn't come with the stylus.

  • +1

So tempted, but hmmmm need to stop spending money on ozb

  • damnit! cheap for a full windows tablet.
as iplau said, need to stop spending money!

  • seems quite decent.

  • Just watched a quick review, looks pretty dope for the price…

  • Not sure if it is Windows 8 RT or Windows 8 x86. It has an Intel CPU. Hard to tell from info.

    • Probably normal Windows 8 x86 given the Pro moniker

    • It's definitely x86.

    • +1

Windows 8.1, not RT, the CPU is powerful, I bought the Lenovo Miix 2 8 (the same hardware as this) when Ebay had the 20% Off promotion, with a Bluetooth keyboard, it works just like a mini laptop

    • Win x86 I have the toshiba version….

  • -4

    it is not full HD

    • +2

yer, but its NOT a gazillion dollar toy made by Apple! :)

      Die Apple, DIE!

      • The Apple, The - Side Show Bob

  • Even cheaper - $200 Delivered to Australia - Refurbished - No office key though

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Venue-8-Pro-8-039-039-32gb-w…

    • Refurb vs new, open box. I wonder if new, open box really means new, untouched, unscratched, etc. If so, I think the $20 extra might be worth it.

    • can anyone comment of the refurb ones have any wear marks on the device and covered by dell Australian warranty?

  • I bought a refurbished one of these for ~$170-180 with the ebay 15% off a couple weeks ago, so far it's been an awesome tablet to use, is essentially a mini laptop with all the functionality of full windows. The only negative I have is that it can be a bit of a pain to hit smaller icons because of the screen size, I ended up buying an Dell active stylus for ~$28 off ebay and this solved that issue.

    • there are options to increase the icons in the start screen, also if you're using a windows 8 optimised program you can increase the spacing between the buttons such as Office 365

      • I know you can increase the icon size, I'm talking about in programs (not office) and things such as the taskbar icons etc.

  • Just in case if any owners of this tablet want to get good docking station - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/plugable/plugable-pro8-… (I personally ordered one)

    • Why did you kickstart a product that has existed for a very long time.
We use USB docks at work for laptop users, and have done for 5+ years.

      Dell sell some nice ones.

      • None of your USB docks will work the same way with the Dell Venue 8 Pro because it does not have a full-sized USB port. It has a microUSB port which requires an OTG cable to connect to a dock. The problem is, that same port is used for charging the tablet, so you can't use it in a docked setting while charging it.

That's what the kickstarter device does. It allows you to use a dock while charging the tablet.

  • these win8.1 tablet looks cool~
but why arnet there any in fhd display? not saying we need it.. even android 7" are at least FHD or 10" 1600p nowadays

    • The ThinkPad 8 is an 8.3" Win 8.1 tablet with a 1920x1200 screen.

…and a large price tag to go along with it!

  • Check the Dell Refurbished store as well. I purchased one from there for AUD$269 including delivery and it still comes with the Office license, full Australian warranty as well as a tax receipt (remember anything under $300 that is for business use is immediately claimable, no depreciation.. just have to wait another 11.5 months is all). Having an actual tax invoice that I can use makes the $269 cheaper than anything I have seen.

  • Isn't brand new Acer windows 8.1 tablet $249($199 after the $50 cashback)at MSY? I don't see why many people are excited over this deal.

    • +4

That's because you don't realize that the Acer is a crappy previous-generation tablet with a slower dual-core processor and poor screen.

This Dell is a current-generation device.

The Acer equivalent would be the W4 which is $348 at MSY.

      • the atom baytrail series is a lot faster than the older generation with windows 8 ~

  • Not a lot of room left on the 32gb… I'm running a surface RT 32gb. I'm loving office familiarity and productivity! Thumbs up. Ive played with these in store, they have a nice screen, bright colours and are pretty snappy. Home button in weird spot, but a pretty good deal for $200

    So according to the description:

    OPEN BOX - EXCELLENT

    Looks & Feels New
    Packaging May Show Wear
    Includes 90-Day Warranty

it looks like that it is "new" but box has been opened. That means it does not include Office:

Tablets in "New Other / Open Box", Like New", and other conditions do NOT include Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013

    • The above was the last comment in this post.

It also happens to be pretty much the same as the first comment in this post.

      woo!

    • Thank you fransisqo, that was what I wanted to know!

  • Damn, wanted one. Listing has ended.

  • Got one of these at $299 from Dell. Very nice Windows tablet.

  • Why would boxes be opened and the contents 'like new'?

    ex-demo? ex-staff?

Bottom line is that 'like' new is not 'new'.

I have something that is 'like' a Ferrari but its actually a VW, hey both are cars.

  • What about charging?

USA is different voltage to us?

    Cheers

    • just like your phone charger, it supports both voltages. You'll just need a cheap plug converter.

Or you can just use your microUSB phone charger. Just make sure it can supply at least 2A for fast charging, and use a good USB cable like the one that came with the phone.

  • I'd be interested in hearing from anyone else grabbed this. I received a notification that it had shipped the same day, but the tracking seems to indicate that it's (two seperate packages) taking the extreme scenic route here.

The predicted ETA on both packages to me in Sydney is now 1 August. For $US26.32 in shipping, I kinda expected a reasonably quick delivery.

    • I just ordered one today. Haven't received a shipping notification yet.

I think US$26 is reasonable for regular-speed-shipping (~2 weeks) by a smaller company that doesn't have the massive negotiating power of Amazon. USPS would probably cost $30 and take just as long if sent by an individual.

      • Thanks, I guess I'll have to adjust my expectations of "International Priority Shipping" in the future.

I'm kinda bummed now, having seen the ASUS Vivotab Note 8 deal from Amazon this morning, buyer's remorse has well and truly kicked in.

  • If anyone is after the stylus, they're $10 off on dell.com.au at the moment. AUD$29 delivered.

    http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=au&l…

    • Thanks for the heads up. Highly probable they will send out the latest A02 rev. too coming direct from Dell HQ.

      • Yup it's A02!

  • +1

Mine arrived today. 15 days total from the day I ordered.

  • I just had mine dropped off. Had 50% charge and am typing this on it now. Very happy.

    • You have any problems with the camera? Using Google Hangout on the device and the color is all funny. I've downloaded all the windows updates, not sure if its my device or a fault in general.

      • I had a blue screen when launching the camera before I done all the updates. Now that every windows and dell update is done I've not had any issue with the camera.

Do you get the funny colours in Skype too?

        • Just did a stack load of updates this morning, seems like its all working now.

  • if theres anyone with buyers remorse in sydney chuck me a line :D
