2x8gb.. just picturing a phone with sodimm slots
Charges direct via a regular 3 pin wall plug.
I've never heard of removable tablet ram.
Technically, it is 8GB of physical RAM and 8GB of virtual ram
I have this and really like it for the screen technology; very good for reading and note-taking with the stylus seems OK so far. It's definitely not for everyone e.g. viewing angles are noticeably worse than the fancy OLED displays. For the price it's good value if you accept some limitations in return for the reading modes. Be aware though, it's massive lol
It has 8 GB or 16 GB of memory?
8GB
what sort of stuff do you read on it ? its pretty much all i want it for
Pressreader stuff mainly, so magazines and newspapers. It's pretty good for full-colour ebooks as well e.g. recipe books. I've read people also think it's good as a comic reader.
Bit expensive for a g99 tablet, no?
The premium you pay for is the novel screen but yeah, its a $250 android at which point id be i interested.
But this isn't e-ink, it looks like just IPS with a matte coating… am I missing something?
As in it's not some fancy high tech display, just a traditional IPS + Anti Glare/Matte later just like most of business laptops.
In one of the pictures it looks like it's sitting on a dock. Any ideas on docking or folio so it can stand on its own?
I didn't see a dock at HN but I did buy the flexible folio. It stands like in the pictures on https://www.tcl.com/au/en/tablets/tcl-nxtpaper-14 . There's small gap at the bottom where you can place the t-pen to a magnet. There are 4 levels of incline that the tablet can be at. I like it as it works well.
Any smaller screens with the same tech for reading you'd recommend?
Just a quick reminder that TCL have absolutely awful support for their software. This may or may not matter to you.
I did just receive an update to the software, so there is some development/support happening at least.
Exciting to see innovation in the display space.
I bought it yesterday from HN. Comes with a TPU case. But I bought their flexible flip case and the t-pen because of my use case. The t-pen fits nicely inside the case without jutting out, so I don't worry about it falling off. Its magnetic and charges via USB-C.
Gaming: ran genshin impact on it to test its gaming capability. Its pixelated but playable. Really big screen so I'm not sure if I'll play a lot on it.
Screen: this is an absolutely wonderful screen! Its about the size of an A4 paper and I use Musescore on it. It displays sheet music well and at a size similar to A4. And the bonus feature of its matt screen is that my music stand light doesn't cause reflections off the screen. Wish I could justify buying a 2nd one so that I can display sheet music side by side.
Drawing: I did a bit of scribbling on IbisPaint. I like the feel of the stylus on the screen. Has a paper type feel. T-pen does come with spare nib, so that's helpful.
Reading: Reading webtoons - I didn't think the color ink mode was particular good for comics. Normal mode is fine. Kindle epubs and PDFs are excellent to use because the screen size essentially allows me to view 2xA5 side by side book style.
Watching and listening: Watched a couple of trailers on netflix and it looks good enough. The audio over the speakers are nice and I think its because its 4 speakers.I don't think I'll be taking this device on the road. Its bigger than my laptop! But its perfect for my use case. The funny thing was that I was looking at the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra and that's almost 4 times the price of this.
I would consider a smaller version but the TCL NXTPAPER Tab 10 and 11 don't have quite the same features. The TCL NXTPAPER 50 pro phone's not bad. But I'm not convinced enough to get one of those either.
I just got the TCL NXTPAPER 50 Pro phone the other day and i think it's pretty good. It comes with Android 14 out of the box. Also it's nice having a phone with half a gigabyte of storage built in. However i found out that it didn't come with a case in the package box so i guess the manufacturer thinks that it's not needed for this phone for some reason.
I got it for $427 from JB on the online chat price match as Officeworks has it for $427. You can select free in store pickup from an Officeworks online order even though the local store is sold out and that the unit is shipped to the local store for you to pick up later on. But the JB price match support person price matched it for me any way so i was able to get it at JB instead.

Sorry, i meant half of terabyte of storage.
Are these any good for Netflix?
Tiny mistake it seems. The unit has just 8 GB of RAM and not 16.
