BOYCOT PAYPAL lol. Paypal now saying that promotion is not for Australia.

  • Damn.. I sent my email last night. I missed out?

  • HAHAHHAHHAHA I called it!

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/160222?page=1#comment-2227…

I'm laughing all the way to naru ;)

    • +3

You didn't really call it, because quite alot of us got the $5 by contacting them.

They prob noticed that 50,000 ozbargain members contacting them about it, so they ignore Australia altogether.

      • bastards! PayPal sucks

      • Thank you… Yes, I'm happy with my USD $5! (not yet exchanged)

  • Has anyone used their credit?
I bought $150 item on ebay last night, but couldn't find the option to use the credit from my paypal account.
I thought I can use the credit first then pay the rest with cc.

    • Has anyone used their credit?

Yep - I first converted it to AUD, and used it to buy something for $12 in conjunction with my CC.

  • from paypal rep

    "no more $5 for OZ"

what a shit waste of time

  • bloody idiots, you'd think they would honour it out of goodwill, it is there own fault. there is a post on AU Paypal facebook page saying they will credit the person $5 maybe we should try there but i only have a fake FB acc. if everyone post on there maybe we can get them to honour.. https://www.facebook.com/paypalau

  • +1

I called Paypal on two separate occasions hoping that the operator was the only factor for declining. They both gave the same Central America BS, will try sending facebook paypal a private message.

    • No such luck on Facebook either

  • I just spoke to someone from paypal regarding another matter and mentioned the survey. He was very apologetic and advised it was for USA only. Bummer.

  • +1

lucky i got in early and got my $10 USD :P

    • same. Thnx to the instructions posted on here.

      • Yeah, I almost couldn't be bothered typing up the email on Monday. But thanks to a boring lunch break and those that pointed out the best method, I'm now $5 richer!

  • +6

Can I open a dispute on PayPal against PayPal?

    • +5

      It's possible.

I watched it on that inception movie….

      ;)

      • and it will have an ambiguous ending

  • +4

Guys, I just got the $5 USD credit a couple of minutes ago by calling them directly. At first they will say they are aware of this and that it is only available to central American customers and not applicable for Australians. However, I was very polite and told them that I knew of other Australians receiving the credit and she said, "oh ok, I'll see what I can do". After putting me on hold for a few minutes, came back and said as a one time courtesy I would receive the $5 USD. Give it a try. Should still work. I think the polite angle is the way to go.

    • +2

When I said other Aussies recivied it as well they said they had no money to give

    • Doesn't a little part of you hesitate in agreeing when they say the courtesy is a one-time thing? What if 10 years from now PayPal pays out daily $5 courtesies but we cashed in on this lousy one-time contract instead.

  • after not receiving a reply from their internal mail system,
i sent them a message on facebook and this time they told me
"that promotional credit was only available for specific customers that received the link via direct email from PayPal"
now on hold trying to talk to them
hold time about 15minutes, told me there was no survey and it was a scam, after i told them about my friends receiving the $5 they told me they would email the marketing department and get back to me via email

  • +2

I just sent a message to Paypal requesting the $5USD Paypal credit. They didn't respond but I did magically receive the credit.

  • +8

Obviously paypal are thinking we aint forking out $189,318.6 to these australian losers

  • -1

so they are telling people that PM them on facebook no as well, despite saying they will sort it out in the public replies?? I don't want to PM them on facebook anyway, this should have been solved by email.

  • +2

Better go and spend my five dorra before y'all make a fuss and they take back from everyone they gave to.

    • Haha yeh was worrying about that..

  • +1

I emailed them as suggested but no reply. So I thought I should call them which i did. They told me that the offer only existed for only CENTRAL AMERICA paypal account holders. I told them that other people from Australia have also been getting the $5 USD for completion of this survey and I kept insisting this, however the lady I was on the phone with wouldn't budge. I then stated that, I completed this survey expecting the $5 USD in doing so, and said that they should honour their part of their deal for my completion of the survey, voilà she finally said she would credit my account with $5 and it's there! :D
EDIT: I said that some people from Australia were receiving either $5 AUD or USD she sadly chose to credit me in AUD

    • -1

really not worth all the effort I don't think, not good publicity for them though. I completed that survey fully expecting the $5, there was no mention that it was US only. It should not take an argument on the phone to be credit.

      • It's so easy to do! I just did it with my 2nd account and it took less than 5 minutes. All I mentioned this time was that other people from Australia have been receiving their $5. I had to explicitly mention that some were receiving $5 AUD or $5 USD and they said that this is a mistake but however since I said other people were receiving this for the survey she said that she would credit my account this one time only but she was wrong :P I have one more account to go :D
EDIT: HAHAH well my 2nd account received $5 USD instead of $5 AUD :D

  • did anyone read on the activate website about it being only for america?
    i didnt

  • Got mine after emailing. Thanks.

  • Got my US$5

They did change the T&C's to state "This offer is only valid for customers who received a direct communication from PayPal" or something along those lines.

This was done after I had completed the survey so maybe those that completed it after the change are the ones missing out.

    • Nope. I completed it before that change back on day 1 of this thread and i missed out.

  • Also got mine after emailing.

  • This probably sounds stupid, but how do you email paypal?

    • +1

You go back to the very top, read the OP's updated listing, click on the link to porleng's comment, and follow their instructions!

      • I actually read that a few times and still couldn't work it out (I think I'm a bit slow) but it was actually the comment from lplau (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/160222?page=4#comment-2245…) that worked it out for me, thanks though!

My problem was that I couldn't work out how to get to the email page to begin with

        • +1

Agreed, their description is a little more thorough!

        • @Snoop
I still appreciate your response though! Ozbargainers are so helpful!

        • let us know what they say, I used Iplau instructions too but was denied :(

    • +2

okay after waiting over 30 mins i called the second time and the lady (different one) said she would look into it. was put on hold for about 5 minutes and then came back saying that the first representative may have missed a step in processing it or didnt press the right buttons… so she sent an email to the first representative about it and that i should receive it within 15 minutes which i did :).
got $5aud instead of usd but im still happy about it although i still believe the first representative planned not to credit me the $5 :/

  • +2

amazing how they will credit those who ring and waste their time on the phone but deny all email responses :\

    • I got mine through email, but that was on Monday

    • i rang and got nothing

  • +1

what email address are people emailing?

I went through help and this was the reply I got:

    PayPal

  • Got the generic NO email, but sent back asking for a PayPal dispute to be opened :)

    • +1

How good has The Power been!! What a win last week. Reckon you can get over the Hawks?

      • Nope

    • +2

I replied back saying my account is in Central America. Its hosted on servers in that region.

  • +2

    Well that was a bust.
I didn't get the credit despite sending the email (and of course doing the survey during the required period)

I have concerns that this post has this many positives:
    - Gives Paypal more positive street credit than it has given out (no objections to those who actually got it actually giving this a positive)
    - Deal (at no fault of the OP) was sold to be much easier than it really was

I am giving it a retroactive negative for not getting the product
…I could call Paypal but I will not beg them to give me an exception from their new retroactive policy

    • Dont bother. They are incredibly rude and don't care at all. Spread the word.

      • -1

Yeah not going to bother esp if they are saying that I was not the
intended target country; not sent the email personally; and "no one" got special consideration.

Not to stir completely, But why do you still upvote this deal
        Clearly you didn't benefit either
At least treat it as a neutral
That said you aren't the only one who has kept their vote unchanged

I may be just off the groupthink though

It isn't a mark on the OP (thank you TA for putting in a lot of effort in the post, updating it and continually helpfully commenting)

        Its just that:
Majority of the deals on this website (maybe not as enticing as this one), have no problems with people redeeming the advertised product.
        They don't score 2000+ votes.

  • Got email just then like everyone else:

    Thank you for contacting PayPal.
We appreciate your effort in participating in the marketing campaign for USD $5.00 Promotion Survey.
Our Marketing team has confirmed that this promotion is only offered to PayPal accounts in Central America as such, we are unable to issue a credit to your PayPal account.
We apologize for the confusion and thank you for choosing PayPal.

I then called them like TA did and the guy on the phone repeated the above, saying its for the US etc. etc.. then said "what happened was, someone got the link from an email and shared it on a social website and then it just went off like crazy, but it was only meant for US…. sorry you are not eligible.."

So in the end, no $5, time wasted in survey/email/call, but hey at least they know the power of ozbargain… congrats to those who got $5 though, lucky ones! :)

  • Contaced Paypal who was incredibly rude and outright refused. What a disgrace!

I will be personally avoiding Paypal as much as I can and will complain about this to all friends/family.

Its one thing to deny the claim, but totally another to be rude to the customer. I hate it when they begin the line with: Here is how its gonna work.. So patronizing..

  • could someone post the original t & c

  • congrats to those who got it. they acknowledged some in Aust got it but can no longer give it. blah blah blah.

    • +1

Paypal categorically denied any Australian users getting it. When I asked them if other aussie users are lying, they said Yes !!!

      • +1

Probably depends on who you get because PayPal is so big they can't get their story straight.

"We acknowledge that we were able to credit some Australian customers however, moving forward, we can no longer provide the same action as it was determined that PayPal wasn’t part of that survey. We don’t have control of customers on customers linking PayPal on this survey."

As i said great for those who got it. Not worth the stress but wish big companies would sometimes admit fault.

        • I would agree 100% over this as I was incredibly stressed.

  • I think this is a dead horse.

  • No $5 for me :(

We appreciate the time you have taken to answer the survey and we apologize for misinformation. The promotion was only for PayPal Central America members only as confirmed by our marketing team thus we are unable to credit you with $5.00 USD.

  • +5

For what it's worth, I can confirm a work colleague just called PayPal and was credited with USD $5 after a few minutes of explaining the lack of respone to his original email request. They acknowledged there was a 'stuff up' of sorts, and that all was being done to rectify the problem. They are also totally aware of claims worldwide, not just in Australia, with disgruntled people.

Here are the T&Cs of the day, which clearly make no mention of any country restrictions:

    Terms & Conditions:

Purchases made on international websites should be paid with the Visa, MasterCard or Amex credit card associated to the user's PayPal account. Purchases may be subject to taxes and/or fees. It is the user's responsibility to verify and pay for any additional fees as well as to ensure that the import of the product is allowed to his or her country of residence. The user should also be in agreement with the delivery schedule.

This PayPal coupon is non-transferable and valid for a single purchase from select merchants who accept coupons from PayPal. Coupon expires September 30th, 2014.

PayPal and/or 3rd party merchants reserve the right to cancel offers at any time without notice. 3rd party merchant offers may be subject to additional terms and conditions.

I feel for those that missed the $5, and I urge you to please call PayPal and protest your rights. Everyone that completed the survey is entitled to the money.

    Have a nice day. TA.

    • I got another reply just awhile ago with a more detailed followup saying that they are no longer giving the $5 credit to anyone that contacts them, also they said those that it was intended for to participate received the link in a direct email, and that it wasn't for Australia nor was it linked to anyone from here. Though without mentioning Ozbargain they brought it up in the email that the link was only shared here and that this isn't a "official paypal site" blah-blah-blah.

    • I tried TA, they were incredibly rude. I have written a detailed complaint email about the person who handled my case. The first CSR I spoke too politely declined, and kept repeating from the script. Agitated, I asked to speak with the Manager and the manager was so rude and patronizing. The guy was so bad that the $5 is last thing in my mind. With this level of incredibly bad and rude customer support, I don't look forward to dealing with them ever.

Bring on the ApplePay so we can just be done with Paypal.

      • +2

When I get home tonight, I'll find time to read posts from other countries re this offer. I know it was huge in the UK & Canada. Interested to see what happened there with the rebate. This has me really upset, as so many people were kind enough to vote the deal up, only to be let down by PayPal.

        • +3

Why should you feel upset. Not one person on here has physically or financially lost anything from this listing! Our eyes all lit up when we saw the word FREE, and rolled the dice. Some lucky, some not so! It's no different to other deals where we (OzBs) exploit it to the point the supplier renegs. eg. Dick Smith, Harvey Norman, Ali Baba, etc. The list goes on! Yeah, it's a pain when you click on a deal to find it's expired, ran out of stock or in a different part of the country, but it happens… and we get on with life! Once again, thanks for trying to get us all a little something for nothing!

        • +2

@Snoop: Yes I agree. You had the best intentions TA. Its not your fault, so please don't be upset. Many customers did get their $5 freebie thanks to you.

As for it being a freebie, it was really not. Paypal got so many to complete the survey for them. We did waste our time in filling it up. We did get confirmation that the funds would be IN in a week. They must be accountable.

They could have easily prevented this by checking the referer URL or checking the type of Paypal account. They didn't. Even worse they have honored the deal for some and then pulled back, that is unfair.

        • Yeah, TA - not your fault. Don't get too upset by this.

        • @sk280:

We did get confirmation that the funds would be IN in a week.

Firstly, it was supposed to be a coupon code, not money or credit!
Secondly, T&Cs stated PayPal and/or 3rd party merchants reserve the right to cancel offers at any time without notice.

I honestly think that most that got it only did so because it was still late Sunday/early Monday in the States, PayPal Australia had not yet received a response, and the reps acted prematurely in issuing the funds!
The only reason people here would still be receiving it is because they are either better negotiators or the rep couldn't be bothered and would rather just get them off the line!

        • @Snoop: Sorry I meant $5 credit.

        • @sk280:
Cool. Still, there's always someone out there trying to find a loop-hole and exploit companies, hence they will always have exit clauses for just this type of thing. And in this case, they are exercising their legal rights!

    • i called up again and spoke to 3 different people…. no good..
ended up cancelling my account aswell over the phone

      • +3

Good luck with future eBay purchases then! Yes, you can use your credit card or direct debit for some purchases, but trust me… You have NO bank protection for eBay purchases!

        • yeh i know… misses got an account… will just use that instead

    • +1

      Terms & Conditions:
      This PayPal coupon is non-transferable

Suggests it was a targeted offer

PayPal and/or 3rd party merchants reserve the right to cancel offers at any time without notice.

Seems they are within their rights to stop paying out on this once they realised their stuff up.

Their legal teams are generally better than this, scrutinizing deals before being released. Someone is going to get their arse kicked over this.

  • Normally I wouldn't feel self entitled over a freebie. But the fact is that they changed the T&C after our participation to cover their asses - just the sort of unethical behaviour I would expect from Paypal.

    Thank you for contacting PayPal.

We have credited some accounts as courtesy during the clarification of the campaign requirements, however, moving forward we can no longer apply the credit for Australian PayPal members.

Our customers in Central America are the only ones invited to participate and received a direct email communication from PayPal to answer the survey.

Australian PayPal members, as confirmed by our marketing team on 16 Sept 2014, would not have received an invite for the promotional campaign.

Furthermore, the link for the survey was only shared through the blog site of 'OZ Bargain'. Please note that the blog site 'OZ Bargain' is not an official PayPal site nor an official website to promote the said campaign.

Though some of the details with regard to the campaign and some of our Australian PayPal account holders that received a courtesy credit were part of the discussion, this does not guarantee nor confirm that all PayPal account members will receive a courtesy credit.

We have noted your interest with our promotional campaign and we hope you can take part when it's time for PayPal Australia.

Unfortunately Paypal pretty much has a monopoly on internet payments these days, minus Amazon.

    • Unfortunately Paypal pretty much has a monopoly on internet payments these days, minus Amazon.

Really? I thought you could also pay online with visa or mastercard?

      • But then you don't have PayPal protection… and when it comes to eBay purchases seems a damn site better than our own banks lack of protection!

        1. Many smaller merchants don't have credit card facilities.
        2. Private sellers, forum sales, etc.
        3. Many merchants don't accept international credit card payments.

There you go. Great to hear some positive news for a change. I guess it really depends on the operator you get. Well done singhbo.

      • I guess people calling are having more success, but really I couldn't justify the effort to call up.
