Free Intel Galileo Board from Microsoft

6610

A free Intel Galileo board from Microsoft. Don't abuse it, happy creating.

Valued over $100 ?

The next big thing is small
From the website:
"We’re bringing Windows to a whole new class of small devices. Build a smart coffee mug, build a talking bear, build a robot, or build something else entirely. All this using a platform and tools you already know and love."

After you enter your email address you will receive a confirmation email , which will contain a link. Open the link and enter your information, you should then get an email saying "Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when your kit has shipped.". You do not need to prove your a software programmer/engineer to get the Intel Galileo board

Edit: some are having more success going to the website https://www.windowsondevices.com/ without clicking via OzBargain website.

I got mine from a gmail account

Some users are reporting emails are not being received to free email addresses. If you don't receive email confirmation within a few hours, try an alternative address (preferably an ISP or work email address).

*** twitter posts and photos are indicating there is hardware not just whitepaper**

        • @squaredonut: the quiz was obtaining an email

        • …then perhaps a better quiz. I've been using Pis and Arduino and would give another platform a try, but I suspect the swamping from OzB and the like might mean I'll have to pony up cash now.

      • The only thing in their eyes is "Valued over $100". I bet eBay will be flooded with these soon.
Microsoft should have limited these offer to MSDN subscriber only.

  • +3

    Have tried .id.au, .edu.au, and .com.au. Nothing.

  • Intel is probably scratching their heads right about now. Where did 550+ aussies in one day just come from?

    • there has been 21 thousand clicks JUST from ozbargain, lets say that 70% signed up, thats a lot of Intel boards, i can almost guarantee that they will cancel all orders.

      • +1

There should be an OzGamble wesbite dedicated to people gambling money on whether orders for certain deals will be cancelled. Odds updated by the minute lol.

      • there has been 21 thousand clicks

Even more once the OP suggested going to the link directly.

  • +1

Tried 10 emails, not one reply, must be ozbargained.

    • +1

      same here

  • Waited 30 minutes. Nothing in my Gmail

Are these one per address and/or email account? They would make great Xmas pressies :P

  • +10

Ah, the one freebie I would actually use and make THE MOST of and likely got hoarded by people who wouldn't know what to do with it.

I guess this is karma for all those PinchMe baby samples I got haha. In fairness, I actually ate all those samples and road testing them for my future kids.

    • -1

      I guess you're right Muff-Muff.
By the way, have you seen that show called 'WAYBULU'? It's based entirely on mindless characters who continually use incorrect grammar and erroneously refer to themselves in the 3rd person etc. I reckon you'd like it.
It's an unwitting tribute to a sweet dairy-based kid's product that was pretty big in Australia in the 1980s, but eventually receded into obscurity as misguided health-obsessed hippies slowly took over the mental landscape… that very yummy desert, which is unfortunately no more, was called 'YOGO' :)

  • I just tried again with gmail and got the email, yay success! I failed previously with gmail, edu.au, work, isp. It seems like it is just luck if you get it.

  • EDITED - Removed, as I'm just repeating info already stated :)

  • Tried 4 different email addresses using google chrome, then tried one of the same ones using Internet Explorer and it worked :S

    • Same. I finally got emailed the link when I used IE. I used Firefox to fill out the form though. Probably won't get sent anything now.

      • Someone should report this hoarder!

  • My work email received no response after 24 hours, then tried gmail and immediately received a link.

  • +1

At last worked with my gmail id - Thanks OP

    Can this run XBMC?

    • +1

Well there are many boards that have a GPU this one doesn't so guess???

    • It doesn't even have a graphics output, the only way you can communicate with it is via terminal connection. It's also going to be pre-flashed with a version of Windows Embedded, so the people who are buying it to run torrent apps aren't going to have much luck without reflashing the hardware.

  • +1

The sign up is very random. I tried multiple times with Gmail / Outlook and my work id yesterday but nothing. Today, I get an email from MS on the first try! I can code and have a bunch of neat ideas for this :)

  • No email yet :( registered yesterday

    • Keep trying :) Tried many times yesterday, didn't work. After reading some comments above, thought to try once more and received the email immidiately.

    Shipped!!!!!

Oops sorry that was just my aspergers. Apologies for the false alarm

  • I got an email straight away, using my personal gmail account. Then I went and filled in my info from their link and got another email straight away….

I think that their response might depend on what you claim your experience and intent is.

Now I'm interested to try doing one from my work email. My work actually is an IoT startup. (err… well, as long as the doors stay open…. everyone's on leave without pay this week.)

  • So just got my confirmation email from them. Any word on how long until the boards are sent out?

  • I just re-entered my details (precisely the same as before) with my US domain name address- confirmation message came through in a few minutes. I'm in the UK though…

  • Applied via phone browser, no reply after 24h.
Applied via IE8, got email to my hotmail within seconds.
    Same details.

  • From the look of the pic of the product, it doesn't have a video out. Correct?

If it doesn't have video out, then not quite a competitor to Rasp Pi.

    • dosnt appear to but being that it runs capes you can probably add it…. but if your using a RPi for video your probably doing it wrong.

i have 2 RPi's and a BBB, only time they were ever plugged into a monitor was after having some issues with them (random non booting). but they have been headless 99% of the time.

      • I have an RPi for XBMC, wouldn't work well without a monitor.
I also use a headless one for a PBX for call screening. Paired with a SPA3102 it is great for stopping telemarketers.

        • can you please provide more details about using pi for call screening?

        • +6

          @abracadabra:
I use the Pi version of PBX in a flash from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/pbxinaflash/files/
I have my incoming phone line and my phone plugged into the SPA.
If a caller has a blocked callerID they are prompted to put in their phone number before the call is passed to the phone, most telemarketers with blocked numbers are caught here. There is also a list of blacklisted numbers which I add any unwanted callers to, who then get a message to say the number is disconnected.
We used to get several unwanted calls a day, this is now down to about 2 a month.
Total cost to set up is about $140, but using VoIP for outgoing calls you can save this over time.

        • Clever … would be great when the big phone companies would offer this out of the box (block all calls with no caller ID and force them to enter a name or number … ).

  • Been trying for the last two days since this was posted. Just now I used the same email addresses I was using the last few times (isp and .edu) and got a reply to both of them instantly.

Won't be greedy and will just be happy to get 1 to program and play with for some electronics projects.

I think the replies are purely random though. This kind of feels like some massive email address mining campaign.

EDIT: Interesting, I only filled in details for one of them, yet the notice to ship was sent to both email addresses. Also one hotmail address that I put in yesterday got a response now too.

  • Okay I had tried a few different ways and was not having any success.
Just tried before using the IE browser as someone else had mentioned and got the email not too long after.
Replied with the address details and now I have the email letting me know that they will notify me when the kit ships.

    Great find OP!

  • Any ideas can this be hooked to a JTAG interface?
I know Raspberry PI doesn't per se and have to wire them in correct order…
    http://sysprogs.com/VisualKernel/tutorials/raspberry/jtagset…

  • Making progress. :)

"Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when your kit has shipped."

  • Finally got the email after I signed up again with the same email id :|

    • I've tried about 30 times over the last couple of days. Tried my ISP's email address, gmail, even have addresses that end in msn.com, live.com, hotmail.com and outlook.com. Tried it on two different PC's. Tried with IE, Firefox, Safari and Chrome on both PC's (one has XP the other Win 7). Nothing!

      What options are people selecting?

Are you guys using the same name (ie. your real name) each time you sign up?

      • I used my name/same answers 3 times until it worked. the whole process on the third attempt took no more than 5 minutes.

  • Found this dev kit tutorial guide that you might find helpful.

    https://software.intel.com/sites/default/files/managed/2a/e9…

FYI. Eclipse IDE, GNU toolchain or ICC toolchain.

    • Yeah, that's using the "native" dev environment using Open Embedded. Intel have been quite active with OE and Yocto. Some good work being done there.

Still, it would be interesting to see how the Microsoft alternative stacks up to the Open Source kit. It'll be hard to trump OE with BitBake/toaster, but to be honest, I haven't looked at Visual Studio since the 2008 edition.

  • doesn't even get an email confirmation.

  • Maybe it depends on the options you select?
On the "Which dev boards have you used in projects?" I didn't select anything, maybe you only get the board if you have sufficient experience. I tried again with my other email, see how it goes. I truthfully selected (only) javascript, c# and .net.

    • I tried 3 or 4 times without success on Chrome, I tried once on IE and it worked within seconds… So maybe you should try that!

      • Sounds like you didnt clear the cache in Chrome

      • Tried twice in chrome (gmail and hotmail) and once in IE (hotmail). Might try some more times…

  • The price on dstore for Intel Galileo is upto $225 from $153 yesterday.

  • Still haven't got a email-tried Gmail, my Outlook.com and iPrimus addresses.

Signed up on my PC using IE11.

    • Worked for me first try with yahoo.

  • Used a personal domain email and got the email in 2 minutes.

  • Used IE 9. Gmail account. Email received within seconds.
No response from same Gmail details via Firefox from yesterday.

  • +1

just got an email then - seems it doesn't matter what email you use, just luck. I just kept pressing submit, back, then submit and eventually got an email.

  • Got my confirmation to a Gmail account using Google Chrome browser. We'll see what happens now.

  • Worked with IE. Didn't work with Firefox.

  • I'd tried 2 different email addresses ( one gmail and the other my own domain ) over the last few days using Firefox and nothing further received. Just tried my gmail one again this time using IE and I got an email straight away

  • +2

Folks if you have no idea what this is/for then leave them for those actually going to use them. PS. It's not a bike light ;-)

    • And that's exactly why I didn't announce it a week ago!

    • +3

      It's not a bike light ;-)

but it could be programmed to dynamically control a bike light to increase/decrease the intensity based upon wheel speed….
      ;)

  • After 11 bazillion eight hundred and thirty two thousand attempts over a number of days, I finally got the e-mail on my Gmail address with Firefox.

  • Spotted this on youtube - very long and dry looking video but it talks about Linux build work on this device: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nSn8C8UcuY

  • Hi,

Any one know when they are shipping kit?

  • Are the people who didnt get the board writing neg comments becausebhe evidence for it being true is shown hence I dont see why people which I wont name are making this seem like a scam.

  • Tried my iPrimus email address about 20 minutes ago tonight and got the email this time around.

Filled out the shipping information form-and then received the 2nd email not long after that.

Been reading up on a lot about Arduino and compatible stuff.

I spy, with my little eye, something beginning with 'hundreds of disappointed OzBargainer'…

Although this comes from another third party site, it sounds highly plausible (and reads like it has already happened):

In a few weeks you will get a First Class mailer with a two pocket paper folder inside containing a DVD with a non-commercial use preview of the MS devices SDK and some VB, and C++ example code. In addition to the DVD, there is an Intel Galileo datasheet that includes a link to download three whitepapers describing some basic hardware development projects and implementation on the Intel Galileo and Quark platforms. The whitepaper set is even titled 'Hardware development kit on the Galileo platform'. So bottom line: it is nothing more than a set of whitepapers describing how to implement their SDK on Intel Galileo and Quark - nothing else.

    • +1

      To the ACCC!!! :-P

    • I thought this deal sounded a bit generous…

      • The sign up was for the upcoming SDK. Microsoft never said they were giving away Intel Galileos.

Well, not on an OzBargain scale.

We will make a limited number of these Galileo boards running Windows available later in the spring (see www.windowsondevices.com for more info).
        - Steve Teixeira, Director of Program Management
Internet of Things | Operating Systems Group

Still, if Microsoft really want to get traction with this, they'd give out Galileos to everyone.

    • plausible

But the email I received stated:

We’re happy to be able to share this early preview with you, and can’t wait to see what you can make with it!

Not sure how you can make something with a whitepaper.

If it were just a whitepaper + DVD, wouldn't they just email a link to a .pdf (maybe .docx lol) and a download link for the software?

Regardless, it's still free stuff :)

      • +2

Here's a whitepaper on what to do with your whitepaper.

According to this tweet, they should start shipping them out soon?

  • +4

    Sourced from reddit.

    Hello All!

Thank you for the interest in the Windows Developer Program for IoT and the Intel Galileo.

We have nothing new to share beyond what was announced at the O’Reilly Solid and Microsoft Build
conferences, but I wanted to clarify a few questions you have posted:

Microsoft is not rejecting signups for the program based on your email address,

including (but not limited to) country or suffix (.EDU, .ORG, etc)
There is no need to sign up for the program multiple times – once is enough!
The Intel Galileo included with the Windows Developer Program for IoT kit will
run a special version of Windows for the Intel Galileo.

    Thanks,

    Dan Rosenstein

    The Microsoft IoT Team

    Also please view the following

I am not saying everyone will get one but they are sending out hardware by the sounds of it.

    Good luck.

I'm going to turn mine into a 3D printer.

    Hello …

I'm glad I was able to help, and I am excited that there is so much interest in the program.

I can't comment at this point about what will be in the DevKit, but you will have answers "soon". The best thing you can do is sign up for the program if you have not already.

    Thanks,

Dan Rosenstein The Microsoft IoT Team

The Intel Galileo included with the Windows Developer Program for IoT kit will run a special version of Windows for the Intel Galileo

    • Why the neg?

  • Worked when I used IE instead of Chrome

  • Anyone know when we might get it?

  • Interesting words in the fifth comment on http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Build/2014/2-511 (back in April):

"We will make a limited number of these Galileo boards running Windows available later in the spring (see www.windowsondevices.com for more info)."

Notice the word "limited". I doubt 27,500+ (OzBargain alone) would be considered as limited. I wouldn't be surprised if they give out boards only to attendees of "Build 2014" (which costed US$2,095 full price to attend).

    • Yes but 18 hours ago, the following comments were made..

"I can't comment at this point about what will be in the DevKit, but you will have answers "soon". The best thing you can do is sign up for the program if you have not already.

      Thanks,"

Dan Rosenstein The Microsoft IoT Team

  • Well, I finally got it to work - turned off Wi-Fi off on my iPhone so it used the cellular network, first used Chrome (wouldn't work), then used Safari and received the Welcome email (within seconds) with a link to enter my address, did that on the phone as well and received the "We'll let you know when it ships" email virtually straight away.

I wonder if/when we'll ever get an email saying it has been shipped???

  • Received the email said:

"Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when we have more to share.

    Thank you,

    The Microsoft IoT Team"

    Maybe too late for that.

  • Hey guys,

Give it a try now, it seems to be working without any issues. Used both @gmail and .edu and received a reply a couple of minutes later. Hope this helps someone.

    Cheers!

  • Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when your kit has shipped.

    Thank you,

    Microsoft IoT Team

  • i got this email "Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when we have more to share".

    May be no more stuff

  • So when they are going to ship?

  • Has anyone heard anything in regards to shipping or received this item as of yet?

  • //Insert quote from email saying "Thank you for signing up"…

//Insert question regarding "Does anyone know when they are going to ship"..

Im pretty sure there will be a flood of posts if any news regarding shipping or actual boards ever turning up

  • +1

Signed up a few times earlier. Got nothing. Signed up again now for fun and got an instant email with a link to input my actual address because "We would like to share our SDK and a hardware development kit with you". However, after inputting details, the second email simply says that "We’ll let you know when we have more to share" as other people has mentioned and nothing about letting me know when it has been shipped. So yeah, it's probably too late.

  • +1

Yes I think they have run out, also got the "We’ll let you know when we have more to share." email.

  • Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when we have more to share.

==> I was soooooo excited after giving up on the raspberry pi. The one freebie I would've loved to get..:((
