  • This or Lenovo P12

    • Interested in this one too as the P12 is $419 on the lenovo edu/epp store

    • Google Pixel is probably built better and better processor, last longer over time

    • +2

According to the specs, the Google tablet has 4G if you want to add a data plan.

        Lisa needs braces

      • +2

Pixel tablet doesn't have sim or esim.
        Any source?

    • The P12 does come with Stylus (I'm looking for tablets with stylus for my kids)

      • The Pixel tablet is USI 2 compatible. I've tried the Penoval USI pen which was nice, but stopped working after ~7 months (it kept registering a press when there was no pressure on the tip). Just got my Lenovo USI pen yesterday and so far a much nicer experience - feels good in the hand and sticks to the back of the tab in a better place. Cost of the Lenovo pen was around $70.

We're getting pixel tablets for the kids as the most common failure point on (all of) them is the USB-C port. Which is a shame because you have a perfectly functional device but you just can't use it because you can't charge it. With the pixel, you can just dock it at night to charge and then away they go.

Lenovo has a terrible history with OS updates for Android. I would never buy an Android tablet from them again having had 2 that were obsolete the moment I opened the box. I have however bought their Chromebook Duet tablet because they don't control the updates & the hardware has been great.

If you want an Android tablet, buy the Pixel

      • Legit. Thanks

      • I've been surprised by some either very bad luck, or Lenovo having some garbage software, but we bought 2 ideapads recently and one of them bricked itself when the preinstalled Lenovo app suggested a bios update, and now the replacement has a strange issue where the system clock in the bottom right toolbar stops randomly at a point in the day and won't restart until the laptop is rebooted (strangely the lock screen continues to show the correct time so it may be a W11 thing)..
It really put me off replacing my work laptop with a ThinkPad.

    • +2

Pixel much better software support and longer updates too

    • Purchased the P12, and returned the next day. Unbelievably slow and horrible pen responsiveness.

  • +1

I wonder if it will be the same price on the Google store.

    • +3

If not you can still price match

      • +1

Is there a chance that I purchase from google store, wait for it to be shipped, but jb hifi changes it to out of stock? Then I worry I may not get the price match successful.

        • Yes, Google's price match price is the worst and is more of a price protection than an actual match.

I ordered one anyway (some left over credit, plus 10% credit from this order) as I already have one with a case and 3 bases around the house (got 2 extra ones on eBay for a good price), so it will plug in nicely into the ecosystem.

        • +2

Just jump on chat, they will verify the price straight away. You pay the Google price, and when it's shipped, you reply to their email and the difference will be refunded.

          • @abs898: I spoke with them in the phone and now have a "case manager" for this price match. Got her to send me an email before i placed the order. I'll need to reply to that email once i get a shipping confirmation so rhat they can arrange the partial refund.

The customer service has been quite good so far (they even sent me the link to the equivalent product in the Google Store, as ordering the wrong colour will disqualify you from the price match), but the actual process is very inefficient.

        • +1

Just to repeat what abs898 said, you confirm the price match with Google first, then you buy the tablet. It doesn't matter if it goes out of stock at JB after as the price match was already confirmed.

  • +3

Not a common usecase but crazy how it doesn't support video out

    • +2

Probably because it's not a common use case. :)

    • +1

I feel that they are marketing this as a smart home hub/tablet for media. They probably expect you to use a chromecast for media streaming.

    • +1

Pretty sure there was a leak about the next pixel tab getting vid out. I'm waiting for Tensor to switch to TSMC manufacturing.

    • It does via casting

  • This or ipad mini for longer life ? I notice that Android pad doesn't last long due and slowing down so much for a short time of period, whilst Apple can live much longer. My ipad mini 2 has lasted for more than 10 years now with only 32gb memory in it. It is still going but limited capability. You tube is still fine but no Roblox anymore.

    • Most advanced users will probably root / flash a new ROM on their old Android device to give it a new lease of life with new features and continued security updates. If you are willing to go down that route, it's very likely you can continue to use the Pixel tablet for as long as the lithium battery holds a charge.

Though keep in mind this tablet is using an older flagship processor, the same one found in the Google Pixel 7 that debuted in 2022. So it's not that new anymore, and there are other Android tablets (such as Lenovo Xiaoxin) that might have superior Snapdragon CPU's for around the same price. It falls behind in performance in that regard.

The Pixel Tab is not at all comparable to the brand new $800 iPad Mini which is using A17 Pro (same processor found in the iPhone 15).

      • -2

Sounds like a pain in the arse. Apple Ipad no brainer especially with good resell value. Any cheaper android tablet after 1-2 year lucky to resell for fifty bucks yet ipads have good resell market even after few years

        • +1

just means the second hand market is better for money conscious people lol

        • Not sure who negged you, but I’d agree with going with iPad mini if you want the device to last 5+ years.

Generally just a lot more consistent software updates. While the device will gradually slow down somewhat, I would say iPadOS will likely age better.

Plus much better tablet app support.

          • @Clain: Yes, but the iPad mini cost $800 now for the latest versions base model, so if you get couple of years out of this I don’t see why it might not be a good choice for somebody.

      • No idea how to do the flashing stuff

    • +2

def iPad and that's coming from an android diehard. The price to performance is much better, and the software support is much longer. You are giving up battery life and a lot in the screen aspect but iPads are the better choice

      • +2

Thats the stupid thing. After all of the marketing around Google having a go at designing their own silicon, the G1 Tensor wasn't even powerful enough to be able to link software to face recognition and unlock phones. And you'd think with the G2 in this tablet, they would likely come close to matching Apple/Samsung's OS updates but no! I'd rather them just go back to Exynos or something and pass on the saving from them not touching the thing.

      • Yeah its much easier to justify an iPad purchase compared to an iPhone.

Weird how Apple is prepared to sell iPads for a song and a dance at $300-something, but people are still prepared to pay $1,500 for a smaller version of the iPad.

  • +11

Just be aware, this isn't with charging dock.

Tablet with charging dock is for $599

If you need a bigger size Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2025 posted by Clear is good too

    • Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2025 doesnt have user profile btw and some keyboard region settings are limited.

      • I got 2 for the kids, and each have a Google user profile. Keyboard, install the Google one and change the font. Done.

  • +1

How is this compared with the Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2025 for a similar price

    • +9

Well if warranty is a factor one is sold from a retailer in Australia the other is from Aliexpress…

      • +1

Yep Deal Killer for mine - not worth the risk

    • -1

From what i have seen, Google gonna provide better software experience + Camera.
The rest are bad cause they using Tensor G2 which was shit compare to same year chip while Lenovo using Dimensity 8300 which is roughly equal to Snap 8 Gen 1+.

      • The google tablet camera on this is mid range / negligible, unlike the pixel phones.

    • +1

Wait 3 weeks for it to ship from china, limited after sales support if any, good luck with warranty. no thanks

      • AliExpress delivery is like 7 business days on average. Has been the case for more than a year.

  • +6

I'll bite if and when they include the dock at this price.

  • +7

remember, you can buy dock for $180 odd at Officeworks at the moment, so cheaper than the "tablet + dock" price at JB

    • +5

Might as well buy the dock + tablet altogether at Officeworks.

  • Wish the case was cheapaer…

    • +2

Wish our wages kept up to spending then dont need to wish cheaper every single thing.

  • Real question:
Just wondering what is the use case of a tablet for adults? I know that kids use it much, but how about adults? We actually can do similar tasks in our mobile phones (I have iphone pro max, so screen is large).
Just keen to know your opinions and use cases.

    • I mainly use it when travelling or have taken it to some meetings where I didn't need my laptop.

    • you can buy a pen and use it as a notebook

    • +5

If you have to ask then you probably don't need one since you do everyong on smartphone and/or PC and the liklihood after getting one, it going to sit in draw and gather dust.

    • I use my Galaxy Tab S9 FE as if it were a windows computer. Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Chrome remote desktop / Rustdesk into my PC at home. So it has the benefits of being super-lightweight, long battery life, but has the same performance of a AMD Ryzen 9 5900x and 16GB of RAM…. Do need a solid wifi connection though otherwise there's noticeable latency and some fuzziness due to video compression.

And entertainment while travelling on the plane / train I guess.

    • +3

Watching YouTube while on exercise bike and treadmill.

    • +1

I take mine traveling for when the only option on the plane is episodes of The Big Steaming Pile of Shit Theory.
Also good for watching stuff when the Chromecast in the hotel room doesn't work properly which is 90% of the time.

    • -2

Mostly for people that consume content as opposed to contribute, which is quite a significant number. If you're writing a comment on ozbargain you probably aren't the mindless instagram scrolling consumer these are ideal for. Typing on a tablet is a PITA.

  • +1

Jeepers, look at the size of those bezels. Seriously is there any justification for those?

    • +1

Gives decent thumb space for kids trying to grip onto the thing without registering touches

    • The justification may be for your hand to grip it without registering touches…

…but honestly it just feels like excuses. We are fine on our phones.

  • Is this better or sgould i pay 5,6 times more for the galaxy tab s9 ultra, s10 ultra?

I am looking to just watch movies on it, offline navigation, back up dash cam footages while i am driving around Australia

    • Buy the Samsung Ultra tabs if you need an OLED display (best for readability in bright sunlight) and top-spec performance, plus SD card

The Google Pixel tablet does not have SD card storage. You cannot put in your dashcam SD card into the tablet directly and might need to use a USB-C adapter for the tf card reader.

But all Samsung tablets accept SD card, both on their mid-range and high end lines.

From your use case it doesn't seem you need a particularly high end Android tablet though, you might be served just as well with $300 Lenovo Tab or Galaxy Tab FE.

Same price at Officeworks in case anyone is interested

I bought one of these a month ago to replace an iPad Pro and I love it tbh. Even my wife said she is happier with it than the iPad. It's nice and light, has plenty of performance for the usual tabletty tasks (light gaming, browsing, watching videos) and the battery seems fine.

One of the best things about it (which is not specific to this tablet, but is a big plus over the Apple ecosystem) is that you can set up multiple separate accounts on it. So my wife is able to log in and not be confronted by my weird choices in home screen, browser, key mappings etc. It's crazy that this is still not possible on the iPad - as Apple intends every household member to have their own.

    • I don't have this tablet but kid had iPad. And when we tried to setup family sharing and control , it needs another apple device and doesn't allow two profile on same iPad. Luckily kid broke ipad yesterday so will buy either pixel or lightweight notebook…iPad never again…

      • Because Apple wants you to buy an iPad for every family member. This is definitely a highly underrated feature of the Pixel Tablet.

    • +1

Exact same scenario for me. My Pixel tablet is not as 'high end' as my iPad Pro but I like it just as much. It feels great in hand and is a very versatile device. I love it doubling as a Nest Hub on its dock and its useful for all the Google Home stuff too. Not to mention the convenience of the various profiles you can use on it as you said.

      • I went without the dock, but I've just ordered a second-hand one as I think having a single place for it to "live" is worth the price alone. The fact that it doubles as a Nest Hub is a bonus. I wouldn't have bought any of the Google home devices themselves, but now that Gemini has support for Home (in beta), I am finding it to be a decent way to control smart devices in natural language. I like that I can ramble and forget what I'm saying halfway through and Gemini is still able to figure out what I want to turn on/off. My wife always hated voice-controlled devices because you had to use precisely the right phrases for it to understand. I like being able to ramble. I'm rambling right now.

  • $350 with the dock and I am in but otherwise much too expensive for what it is.

  • +1

Has anyone used this with a stylus? I'll looking for tablets for my kids (8 and 9) to be able to also draw on.

    • This is not my use case, but I've tested it with a USI 2.0 pen and it worked well.

  • If this only had an OLED screen instead, would be an instant buy. Would mainly want it for late night TV/YouTube in bed in the dark, can't go back from an OLED display for that accurate dark room picture.

    • +1

If only it had OLED, was $159 cheaper, came with a dock for free and included pen. If only JB included a $250 voucher, if only the device came with a free upgrade to a newer model every 2 years.

      If only mate, if only…

    • The screen is actually very good for an LED.

  • This or tab A9+?

  • +1

The $599 deal with charging dock is not worth it. Might as well buy seperately.
The $349 tablet + $189 charging dock equates to $538.

  • This or the Lenovo Tab Plus
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/876482

    • The Lenovo has worse performance but a better screen dimension for watching videos and already has a dock and awesome speakers with it, unlike this pixel tablet which requires a separate dock and speakers to have the same effect.

      The Lenovo has shittier performance.

    • Moment of silence for those who bought that Lenovo yesterday…

$60 restocking fee (20%! Thieves) Meaning you will be paying an extra $70 for this pixel tablet if you cancel your Lenovo.

  • +1

Delivery only? Can't see any store with stock online.

  • This or that?

    • +1

      This

      • No, That is better (not that)

        • Hmm you could be right 🤔
