Gives decent thumb space for kids trying to grip onto the thing without registering touches

    • +1

The justification may be for your hand to grip it without registering touches…

…but honestly it just feels like excuses. We are fine on our phones.

      • +1

Think about how you hold a phone compared to how you hold a tablet…

    • +1

      Good for my fat fingers.

  • Is this better or sgould i pay 5,6 times more for the galaxy tab s9 ultra, s10 ultra?

I am looking to just watch movies on it, offline navigation, back up dash cam footages while i am driving around Australia

    • +3

Buy the Samsung Ultra tabs if you need an OLED display (best for readability in bright sunlight) and top-spec performance, plus SD card

The Google Pixel tablet does not have SD card storage. You cannot put in your dashcam SD card into the tablet directly and might need to use a USB-C adapter for the tf card reader.

But all Samsung tablets accept SD card, both on their mid-range and high end lines.

From your use case it doesn't seem you need a particularly high end Android tablet though, you might be served just as well with $300 Lenovo Tab or Galaxy Tab FE.

Same price at Officeworks in case anyone is interested

I bought one of these a month ago to replace an iPad Pro and I love it tbh. Even my wife said she is happier with it than the iPad. It's nice and light, has plenty of performance for the usual tabletty tasks (light gaming, browsing, watching videos) and the battery seems fine.

One of the best things about it (which is not specific to this tablet, but is a big plus over the Apple ecosystem) is that you can set up multiple separate accounts on it. So my wife is able to log in and not be confronted by my weird choices in home screen, browser, key mappings etc. It's crazy that this is still not possible on the iPad - as Apple intends every household member to have their own.

    • +1

I don't have this tablet but kid had iPad. And when we tried to setup family sharing and control , it needs another apple device and doesn't allow two profile on same iPad. Luckily kid broke ipad yesterday so will buy either pixel or lightweight notebook…iPad never again…

      • +2

Because Apple wants you to buy an iPad for every family member. This is definitely a highly underrated feature of the Pixel Tablet.

    • +2

Exact same scenario for me. My Pixel tablet is not as 'high end' as my iPad Pro but I like it just as much. It feels great in hand and is a very versatile device. I love it doubling as a Nest Hub on its dock and its useful for all the Google Home stuff too. Not to mention the convenience of the various profiles you can use on it as you said.

      • +4

I went without the dock, but I've just ordered a second-hand one as I think having a single place for it to "live" is worth the price alone. The fact that it doubles as a Nest Hub is a bonus. I wouldn't have bought any of the Google home devices themselves, but now that Gemini has support for Home (in beta), I am finding it to be a decent way to control smart devices in natural language. I like that I can ramble and forget what I'm saying halfway through and Gemini is still able to figure out what I want to turn on/off. My wife always hated voice-controlled devices because you had to use precisely the right phrases for it to understand. I like being able to ramble. I'm rambling right now.

  • +3

$350 with the dock and I am in but otherwise much too expensive for what it is.

  • +1

Has anyone used this with a stylus? I'll looking for tablets for my kids (8 and 9) to be able to also draw on.

    • +1

This is not my use case, but I've tested it with a USI 2.0 pen and it worked well.

  • If this only had an OLED screen instead, would be an instant buy. Would mainly want it for late night TV/YouTube in bed in the dark, can't go back from an OLED display for that accurate dark room picture.

    • +17

If only it had OLED, was $159 cheaper, came with a dock for free and included pen. If only JB included a $250 voucher, if only the device came with a free upgrade to a newer model every 2 years.

      If only mate, if only…

    • +2

The screen is actually very good for an LED.

  • This or tab A9+?

  • +6

The $599 deal with charging dock is not worth it. Might as well buy seperately.
The $349 tablet + $189 charging dock equates to $538.

  • This or the Lenovo Tab Plus
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/876482

    • The Lenovo has worse performance but a better screen dimension for watching videos and already has a dock and awesome speakers with it, unlike this pixel tablet which requires a separate dock and speakers to have the same effect.

      The Lenovo has shittier performance.

    • +2

Moment of silence for those who bought that Lenovo yesterday…

$60 restocking fee (20%! Thieves) Meaning you will be paying an extra $70 for this pixel tablet if you cancel your Lenovo.

      • I had bought the Lenovo Tab Plus. I don’t plan to refund at this moment, since the speakers looks awesome. Is it a bad buy for me?

        • +1

Sorry my maths was wrong, it would be an extra 110 to return the Lenovo and then buy this pixel.

From 300, take away 60 (20%), left with 240… Add in 110 to make it 350 for this pixel.

Anyways, the Lenovo is good for what it is I think - an absolute beast of a cinematic experience due to the screen resolution, screen aspect ratio and mainly the speakers (…minus the screen technology which is apparently good enough based on reviews but obviously not Samsung AMOLED good, but still its 300 so…). The Lenovo's processor is nowhere near as snappy as the Pixels, and the GPU also can't touch the pixel's… But based on reviews I've seen, it's good enough… So as long as you're content with mainly watching videos, as opposed to playing games / use apps that require heavy processing, it's an amazing buy, enjoy 🙂

Edit: …also, apparently the Lenovo tablet's speakers can be used as a Bluetooth speaker for like your phone… So there's longevity in that too.

Delivery only? Can't see any store with stock online.

    • +1

Agree. It's hardly $349 when you can't avoid the shipping fee since it's OOS in all stores.

Awaiting JB to modify the shipping or availability to fix this..

      • Just get it from office works

    • Same. But Hornby had stock of white porcelain

    • Update: finally in-store in a bunch of NSW locations.

  • +1

    This or that?

    • +1

      This

      • No, That is better (not that)

        • +1

Hmm you could be right 🤔

    • +1

      no, my pronouns are they/them

    • +4

For what purpose? They advertise to quickly fix security vulnerabilities but you're relying on zero pay "you tell me what's wrong" bros rather than literally the Android development team.

      Custom ROMs are very 2012

      • Pretty uneducated opinion imo.

        https://grapheneos.org/faq#upstream

I also don't think they're just 'zero pay bros' considering they've received substantial grants from the likes of Proton etc. You don't have to like it/use it, but I think dismissing it to something akin to a 2012-era custom ROM is silly.

        • +2

Not for profit and asking for donations. They could drop the project any day.

  • +3

interested in using this as a digital photo frame with Google Photos when the tablet is not in use. but $599!

    • $536 if you buy separately

  • +1

does the dock also make this like a google home device?

    • +1

      yes

  • +4

You can buy this from officeworks for the same price and the dock is $187 so total with dock and tablet is $536.

  • +1

Google black friday sale is coming soon. Hodl

    • Its already started bud, and the price isn't great.

  • +1

Will wait for BF to get a deal with the dock to replace my good home hub. Doesn't make sense to just get the tablet.

  • Is this supposed to be kinda like the new google home product that sits around like the google photo album?

  • I would prefer the dock, so if I buy just the tablet version and not open it, see what happens with BF, if the tablet+dock is a lot better value, then should be able to just return the tablet only right? And if there's no deal with a dock then just open it and hope there's dock only deal in the future?

  • Any opinion on how this works with a stylus? Any better or worse then an iPad mini (last gen)?

  • Can't get anything for this price other than the Lenovo. I have the Lenovo for the kids, and it's amazing.

    • So you'd pick the Lenovo over this…?

      • +1

        Lenovo's cancellation conditions… 20% restocking fee, bastards!

        • +1

This stung me as well, wont ever buy from them again. I returned it as it was laggy, no updates and they did not care, support offered zero ETA on an update so back it went then they stung me with a restocking fee they caused by releasing a poorly supported device.

          • @WhiteEvo6: I bought that Lenovo tablet from yesterday… Swallowing the pill. Or else I'd be forking out an extra $110 for the return and Pixel tablet.

            • +1

@smartProverble: If you bought it from ali there's a good chance it hasn't shipped yet and you can cancel the order.

              • +2

@xmail: thanks but mine's from the lenovo education store. Their returns policy is pure bs. Must be done within 7 days after delivery, unopened and new condition, and 20% restocking fee.

  • +2

Still not cheap enough for the model with dock

  • +1

    This or Galaxy tab a9+?

  • +4

I bought this instead of a laptop for basic productivity tasks at home and watching netflix a few months ago. Im a huge google fan and wanted to love it, but I dont.

I get bugs, glitches and apps closing all the time. At the moment, the system software doesnt even finish installing and chrome closes everytime i open it. Raised a ticket 3 days ago and havent heard back.

Theres also minor things i dont love. Like how one side dims when split screening. How messages/emails dont register that youve viewed them on your pixel phone.

I dislike apple but have to admit my partner's ipad is way less buggy and much more practical.

    • +2

Thanks, saved me the headache, I was looking to see if Googles software for tablets had improved since my last check, clearly they don't care about this sector. Im still in shock developers are still building phone apps stretched as tablet apps or they just use the phone size area of the screen and its on popular apps as well, fragmentation in Android is its biggest issue

      • You really should look at Samsung flagship tablets in this case (for multi window I mean, not the apps).

Google's ones seem half baked. And Samsung's been doing the multi window stuff for years before it became an android standard (which is why I bought (and still use) the original Galaxy Tab S from 2014).

I want to switch to this Pixel tablet (but am stung with the Lenovo deal from yesterday).

Apps wise, I use basic apps (basically mxplayer) and use web apps / browser for all other tasks.

        • +2

Yeah i had an ex JB mate that raved about the samsung tablets. I couldnt resist giving google a shot at this price though (i got it the last time they did 50% off), especially as im a long time pixel phone user

          • @crazyegg247: And have you been happy with using your Pixel Tablet so far then?

            • +1

@ozhunter68: @ozhunter68 my review was the original comment. It didnt live up to my expectations for what i needed it for, but its still quite good for leisurely scrolling and movies at this price point

              • +1

@crazyegg247: Oops,….I did read that but jumping around posts not focussed on who/what lol.

        • Have you tried simply factory-resetting it?

          • @magic8ballgag: @magic8ballgag I did a factory reset on the weekend. In terms of bugs and glitches, it seems to be working a bit better, however it still won't update to Android 15

    • Not fair to compare a first gen pixel tablet to an oldie ipad. The bugs are software side which can be improved over the next few big updates for free. However, can't expect much from this pixel tablet as it's more designed for the smart home system.

      • Android tablet software has had this issue since nexus days, this is a software developer that’s given up on this sector and promoting it, why would devs care

        • +2

The days have changed. Any flagship android phones these days can have pretty much similar experience as iPhones. They do have their good and bad sides. iOS seems to limit what I want to do and costs more. It's a no no for me as I'm a Windows person. If you are with the apple ecosystem, why not? Apple does offer better user experiencee in general.

Also, iOS only needs to focus on a few devices while Android has to deal with 10x if not 100x more devices. Quite different there.

      • +2

The guaranteed software updates for years to come was definitely a selling point for me. Im staying optimistic.

    • Seems like more of an issue with Android than this tablet. So for those happy with Android the hardware itself isn't the complaint?

      • +2

Be fair, I don't have that kind of issues with my Samsung tablet. Samsung have been banging their head in the tablet market for a long time, so I guess they at least learnt how to make an OK Android skin for tablet (it's still bloated, but some features are really nice to have).

        • +2

I've not seen these issues on pixel phones or other Android tablets running Xiaomi OS. I am a bit sceptical. Perhaps running buggy apps rather than the os itself. If chrome wasn't launching as a general rule for everyone it wouldn't go unnoticed and unfixed.

Modern versions of android are pretty slick in my experience.

          • +1

@xmail: Possibly. Or it's also very possible that there is a hardware issue (getting a dud electronics causing weird issues isn't unheard of)

    • +1

Sorry to hear that. Never had any issues with mine on Android 14, and snooth sailing since upgrading to 15 on day 1. Ordered a second one for another room.

    • +1

Yeah sounds like you got a dud one mate, I have 3 here in my house all working 100% none of the issues you've mentioned.

If you bought it retail, just go back to the store and exchange it. We had to echange my daughter's first one as 1/3 of the touch screen/pen digitizer wasn't working from the start. Officeworks exchanged it after showing them the problem no issues on the day.

The ONLY issue we have is that the so called notification sync (new feature) is not working on any of the devices but no other issues at all. We love ours.

Sucks man. The bugs and glitches definitely are not a normal experience.

  • Its the dock really worth another $250?

    • Nope. For my use I don't see a use case for the dock.

    • But for some it's worth the $180/$187 from Google or Officeworks though.

  • +2

I'm looking for an entry to mid level tablet specifically for drawing and digital art. Got about $1000 to spend.

I don't wanna get one of those tablets that plug into a computer, I'd rather something like the iPad or this, but concerned they aren't built for things like pressure sensitivity, stylus fine detail etc.

Any ideas on what I should be looking at? I've got information overload and getting a bit lost in the tablet ecosystem.

    • +2

entry to mid level tablet specifically for drawing and digital art. Got about $1000 to spend.

For this amount of dough, you are looking at closer to flagships or former flagships).

I would pick none other than the Samsung Galaxy S Tab series, or the iPad. Samsung's been doing this much longer (since the Galaxy S Note from what, 2012?) But I think Apple's caught up with the pen technology, and both support Adobe products. Of course, they have their native apps for drawing as well.

Lenovo's also in the pen game as well but is 2nd tier and much cheaper, not as well rounded.

    • +3

If you have Wacom EMR tablet (those pens that do not have batteries inside), Samsung uses that tech, so that might be easier transition.
That said, Apple Pencil is nice as well. I do prefer Samsung's s-pen for its palm rejection, but that's more comparision from playing around with one at Apple Store.

It's probably best to try them in person?

I would either go with Samsung or Apple, recommendation wise, leaning towards Apple more because of how Android tablets aren't exactly for everyone and Apple iPad has more apps for creaters as well from my understanding.

    • +1

There are a few companies that make wireless drawing tablets. May be check this one?
      https://www.xp-pen.com/au-store/

  • This is so seriously cheap compared to iPads, not sure why these not even being sold out.

    • +1

Many reviews show Buggy, performance . Rather hear from current owners since updates came out if it’s fixed

      • No issues here

    • +1

Usually apple products are seriously expensive.

      • If things work I’ll pay the price, I’d pay for the Galaxy tab S9 if I wanted less issues but surely Google can make good software for a tablet, I means it’s their entire role as a software dev 🤣

    • Not really. Check ipad 9th gen at slightly more. Much better bang for buck than this.

  • what are some good cases for this…. maybe an option for keyboard case as well, im not a fan anymore of lugging my laptop around when a charge block, tablet and phone can do what i need.

Bonus, this can use a stylus.

  • +1

Would Black Friday deals bring the price down a bit more?

  • well, i jumped.

this is an upgrade from my samsung galaxy tab A 2016 with s pen. i was considering going a lenovo BUT the stylus response wasnt great and the chipset is pretty old and not able to keep up with the large screen etc and bonus point for being able to use sim.

disclaimer: i do have a headwlf fpad3 BUT my kids are alwasy taking.

took the plunge on the $116 dock too. seems awfully cheap though… hope we're not getting scammed.
