6610

A free Intel Galileo board from Microsoft. Don't abuse it, happy creating.

Valued over $100 ?

The next big thing is small
From the website:
"We’re bringing Windows to a whole new class of small devices. Build a smart coffee mug, build a talking bear, build a robot, or build something else entirely. All this using a platform and tools you already know and love."

After you enter your email address you will receive a confirmation email , which will contain a link. Open the link and enter your information, you should then get an email saying "Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when your kit has shipped.". You do not need to prove your a software programmer/engineer to get the Intel Galileo board

Edit: some are having more success going to the website https://www.windowsondevices.com/ without clicking via OzBargain website.

I got mine from a gmail account

Some users are reporting emails are not being received to free email addresses. If you don't receive email confirmation within a few hours, try an alternative address (preferably an ISP or work email address).

  • How long are comments left open on expired deals? Long enough for people to post when they eventually get a "we have shipped your kit" email?

  • Sounds like there were devices in the kit but not enough for everyone

    https://twitter.com/stevetex/status/486598935931133952

    • "We plan to ship a couple of hundred kits each week this summer and continue adding more templates and guidance to the Developer Portal. We’ve already seen an overwhelming amount of interest in Windows for IoT. As a result, we will not be able to ship this initial developer kit to everyone who signs up."

Translation, don't hold your breath ;)

  • I'm holding mine….and my buttocks too.

  • It looks like Microsoft had enough of OzBargainers. The Windows on Devices website is no more. Instead, you get redirected to an MSDN page now.

    Well done crowd!

OzBargainers have the power - enough power to make even Microsoft change their tune. :D

    • It wasn't just OzBargain. Many many websites and social media accounts were promoting the "free Galileo".

  • What is in the box?
Included with your Windows Developer Program for IoT kit are the following:

    Intel Galileo
    Power Adapter
SD card case containing a microSD card in an SD card adapter
    Ethernet cable
    an LED
    USB to Ethernet adapter

  • Some info from Microsoft:

    Dev kit / Preview Access

Q: Is the Windows Developer Program for IoT still open? Can I get in?

A: We’ve been overwhelmed by the public response and we’ve already received more requests for kits than we have inventory for this first round. You can still signup at WindowsOnDevices.com to join the program and continue to learn more about the program as it continues.

Q: I didn’t sign up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. Can I get a board?

A: Initially, we’re focusing on ensuring a great experience for the earliest customers who registered for our program. We’re going to continue to expand to best serve the community of interested developers in the future.

Q: Will everyone who signed up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT get a Galileo board?

A: Response to the program was fantastic. The only downside is that we received more requests than we have hardware to distribute. Unfortunately, that means that not everyone who signed up will receive a development kit and Galileo board.

Q: I didn’t sign up for the developer preview. Can I buy an Intel Galileo and install Windows?

A: Initially, we’re focusing on ensuring a great experience for the customers who registered for the program. We’re evaluating how to scale this program once we’ve worked with the early adopters.

i.e. - Some will be lucky, others not so much.

Can I suggest that those lucky OzBargainers that receive a board, but don't plan on developing anything on it, donate the board to those of us who are genuinely interested in hacking the hardware and making something of it?

Karma points and all that. ;-)

      • i.e. - Few will be lucky, Most not so much.

        fixed that up for you…..

        • It will be extremely lucky if anyone who signed up from here get one. By the time it was posted here, word of "free Galileos" had been out for a few days on Intel forums, Reddit, Twitter, drone forums, hack forums, maker forums, deal sites, etc.

  • Wonder how many muppets will get one? Galileo, Galileo… etc. http://youtu.be/tgbNymZ7vqY?t=1m49s

Appears that they open to signup again, but with more clear text saying "Some members may receive hardware based on qualifications at various stages of the program, with limited quantities."

Just wanted to share the fact that I actually received the the board.

      • +1

I stand corrected. Congrats! Did you receive an email earlier saying your kit had been shipped?

        • +1

looks legit to me, congrats and thanks for posting (specially the pic conformation) :D

        • +1

Hi Cheese510 - yes I got a sign up email, a confirmation email and on the 2nd Aug an email saying it had been shipped but I was waiting till I actually received it to believe it. Even got an email after I received it saying has been delivered.

        • @Toriana:
Wow you must be the only one- hope I get one!

        • @nosdan:
Happy to provide a photo would have posted one sooner but did not think of it and only just check back into ozbargin and saw the request.

      • +1

        Wow Kudos to you!
Did it just turn up? Did you get shipping info?
Thought you were BSing too, glad to be proven wrong! :)

        • +1

I got some confirmation sign up emails and a your item has been shipped on the 2 August but I did not really believe I would received it.. so I was very pleasantly surprised after I signed for the package and realised what it was.

        • @Toriana:

Did it ship with a tracking number in this format

          RQXXXXXXXXXSG (SG being from sinapore)

      • +2

        Congratulations Toriana,

      • @toriana - Did you post in the early days of the deal, or was there anything special about your application that might account for your success?

I felt I had a reasonable case (haven't used Galileo, have used a few competitors and am interested in the field) but suspect that lots of us in this boat were drowned out by people merely looking for a freebie.

        • +4

Hi @Tplen1 - I can't remember if I was early or not but I think it was still on the first page of comments and less than 50+ votes

I can't remember exactly what I said but I was honest about my limited knowledge and that I had never used a development board before.

I said that I have played around making circuits with mostly re-used computer components, making simple circuits and doing some basic experiments and that I had limited experience in programming.

But that playing with such things is a hobby that I am interested in learning more about and something I really enjoy. I also did not give a really in-depth description of what I would build and how I would make it. I stated there where so many possibilities of what I could do with a board and that no doubt a whole heap might occur to me as I gained knowledge and played around with it.

I honestly did not think I had a chance of getting one due to me not being involved professionally in the IT field nor do I have any IT Qualifications. And not having knowledge or having used all the computer programming languages listed (I only ticked the few boxes of those I had used)

So I don't know why I received one.
I know it is something I am excited to use.
And that I have big learning curve as I have fun playing with it.
But I am happy to have something good happen to me for a change.

          @Toriana:

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully some of the rest of us will be as lucky, though in the meantime I'll play round with my new Raspberry Pi B+ which replaces my first generation models. Enjoy the experimentation!

  • +3

YAYYYYY, my post was not a waste of time. Hope I actually get one too.

    • I haven't checked the mailroom at work yet - hopefully it's there soon.

  • +2

Finally an email came today that my unit has been shipped with a tracking no.
    Still keeping my fingers crossrf!

What did I to get it? I do have some programming knowledge and dabbled with Arduino and C51 microcontrollers. Anyway, to make life easier, what I did was copy and paste some Arduino project plan I found on internet. Don't know if they actually read it, or they randomly pick who to receive the kit based on geographic locations.

    • Smart thinking!

    • Could be first X amount of registrations

    • Did it ship with a tracking number in this format

      RQXXXXXXXXXSG (SG being from sinapore)

      • Hi @easternculture my tracking number had no letters in it. It was shipped from the US according to the delivery info in the your item has been delivered email.
I did not keep the packaging and cant remember what was written on the box.

    For anyone who gets one..
    http://www.wpcentral.com/custom-windows-os-coming-intel-gali…

Microsoft is promising to deliver a custom version of its ubiquitous Windows operating system to developers who own Intel's Galileo, which can be used to power and connect to other devices. Essentially, Galileo is like a Raspberry Pi for Windows developers to use to power the next generation of the Internet of Things.

  • They should at least email people saying they won't be getting them if they have run out.

  • Heres hoping I get one…

Got this email today looks like no more boards left :(

    Hello

On April 2nd we announced the Windows Developer Program for IoT at //build/ and asked you to sign-up. Your response has been overwhelmingly positive and many of you have asked how you can use an Intel Galileo board that you either already own or can purchase and we’re pleased to announce today that you can!

Intel has made the latest UEFI firmware available and we have posted instructions on how to install the new Windows image.

This release is also our first servicing release for existing users. If you have your own board or one that we have distributed we’d like you to update to this latest image.

While we are continuing our program, we have finished allocating all the Intel Galileo boards that we purchased. If you were allocated a kit then you should have received either a tracking number or an email saying a kit was allocated to you. If you haven’t received either of those two emails you will still be able to participate in the Windows Developer Program for IoT using a retail board.

Finally, the release information above is for the Intel Galileo Gen 1 hardware, as we continue with our program we are committed to supporting the Gen 2 hardware. We will be making additional Windows images available through our Connect site.

If you have any feedback on this release please let us know at our Connect site.

We can't wait to see what you will make!
    The Microsoft IoT Team

  • I also got same email..

    They send you any Hardware?

    • No - all I got from Microsoft is email ;)

  • +4

we have finished allocating all the Intel Galileo boards that we purchased.

Translation: we don't feel like giving out more free stuff although we promised it.

If you haven’t received either of those two emails you will still be able to participate in the Windows Developer Program for IoT using a retail board.

    Translation: Go buy it yourself

Bit disappointing. They should have been upfront about how many they want to hand out, and include a counter of what is left. It's not like they shouldn't expect a lot of people applying.

    • +1

They couldn't include a counter as they decided who to allocate boards to based on the details provided. The purpose wasn't to create a first-come-first-serve free hardware offer.

  • +3

yeah same email for me. Very crappily handled if you ask me.

oh well. I'm a developer who might have prototyped something for work with the galileo and ended up with a product that needed to license embedded windows - but as a result will just be sticking with linux on ARM when I need a full blown operating system.

Also, I only ever heard horror stories from people I know who tried to make something complex with windows CE, anyway. So it's probably for the best.

    • -2

How was it 'very crappily handled'? What should they have done differently?

      • +3

Set expectations better? Not make it sound like all eligible applicants get a board?

  • +1

    … No board :(

  • I ordered mine for an educational (eg a lab at uni) purpose and didn't get one either.

  • Yup got the same crappy email

  • Well, looks like Stephen Hawking got one for free: http://www.businessinsider.com.au/stephen-hawking-intel-conn…

  • Mine arrived yesterday :D

However, I looked on ebay for some stuff for mine… and found people are selling their kits for $50!!!!!! Gah!

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Intel-Galileo-Arduino-Dev-Boa…

When there are people who genuinely want one to play and learn with, there's always someone else (i.e. Broden) who are just in it to make a quick buck. :( I'm sorry to the people who truly wanted one, and who missed out because of peope like this.
