  • wow great deal, i'm just wondering if it will get any cheaper??

    • Doubt it. It would probably dip below $500 only on stores getting rid of their last stock.

  • +1

This is great - thank you! Will go to JB tomorrow and see if they can do a deal for the Pro 128gb and Type Cover and if not order off here - ta!

  • Anything for non-students?

a continuation of the amazing deals on Surface Pros currently going on

are there new models about to be released ?

Surface Pro 2 has been out a while, they're still selling off first gen stock.

      • thanks… just read up on it…

for once jv made a legitimate comment. y downvote

      • haters gonna hate!

Battery life is poor on the 1st gen Surface Pro according to most reports.

    • +6

isn't there a power cover coming soon that will alleviate the battery problems?

      • +1

there is but no one knows when it coming, there is no release date, early 2014 my ass..

      • +2

Which adds bulk and weight… the battery life is still a valid concern with these devices, and it's amusing that someone (most likely recent purchaser wishing to censor out all possibility of buyer's remorse inducing comments) voted someone for mentioning something which is indeed fact.

        • +8

Funny how 2-3 hours battery life isn't enough for us anymore. I remember buying a top of the range DELL laptop in 2001 for $5,000 (yeah, I know!) and the battery when new was 1.5 hours which was state of the art at the time.

        • +1

think about the usage now though, students don't always have access to powerpoints, or people like doing some notes on their daily commute. so by the time they get to their destination they'd be on like 75% juice :P

im not sure about charging speeds, but it's really just not consistent to keep relying on powerpoints (from experience and my crappy phone batt life which is about 3-4 hours screen time)

but yeh times - a changin! ever since we're heading digital haha

      • I have a Surface Pro 128GB and I can squeeze out 6 and a half hours of battery. I kid you not.

I used this article to create a custom power profile and yeah, massive improvement.

        http://www.allthatnerdystuff.com/2013/10/21/how-to-optimize-…

The Surface Pro, in my opinion, is the perfect hybrid of tablet and desktop PC. Such a powerful device, in comparison to an iPad or Android tablet which really lack a true productivity suite and setup. Yes, they have office style apps and ways to do things, but you can't run a full blown Adobe Photoshop or Video Editor on the competitor tablet devices.

Good for gaming, a productivity monster, and really good for media too.

        Couldn't recommend it enough (y)

    • The Surface Pro 2 only uses less power than the first SP when idling. If you're running the CPU a lot, the gap narrows quite a bit. At full load, the battery life is the same.

    • +1

But remember that this is not a tablet, but a fully fledged ultrabook. Most ultrabooks with these specs will last around 7 hours, this is in a smaller form factor, so it's fair.

  • +25

That last sentence in the description is just creepy.

  • +2

I got one of these for 610 student pricing a while ago. Love, love, love it. Fast, small, yes, battery life not ideal, but if you want full windows, a good deal. Connected to a 24 inch monitor at work and home (ebay provides the adapters cheaply, do not buy them from Microsoft). Awesome machine. Warning: Got a 20 dollar wall charger from ebay that literally smoked away Friday in the office. If you need one, buy it for 90 bucks from MS (ouch).

This academic offer for eligible students, faculty, and staff requires verification of eligibility prior to purchase and is subject to limitations 6

    but…

[1] Office products and other desktop apps sold separately
    [2] Blah Blah
    [3] Blah Blah
    [4] Blah Blah

How is this comparable to Acer W700 at $699 comes with cradle and folio BT keyboard … with 128gb ssd and 4G ram?

    • Acer has bigger screen, better battery life, but no memory card reader…

      • +4

        and it's 699…

        • in the end its just an Acer, cheap and nasty.

    • +2

Acer is capacitive touch so no wacom style pen writing on it. Also the bluetooth keyboard (which is undetachable) folio is quite cumbersome compared to the surface's clip on keyboard.

  • +1

Can this run LoL or cs go?

    • +1

      It has Intel HD4000 GFX.

Reading this it seems to do a decent job compared to the crap-as Intel graphics from 5yrs ago.

So the games you mentioned would run just at lower settings.

    • +1

I have the same processor in my laptop (running HD4000 graphics too) and I play them on 720p with medium settings and 1080p on low settings and they run fine, HDMI out to a monitor. Don't expect a smooth framerate with higher quality settings though.

    • +3

I can run csgo at 40-50fps on dust2 all low 1024x768 on a HD3000 so the HD4000 should be ok. Don't expect it to look amazing or to run well with oversized or unoptimised maps though.

  • Reckon I could bargain this(128gb) down to 600- including type cover at JB? At this price I will pull the trigger

    • Tried that at JB. Got them down to a smidge under $700 all up :(
…not worth it for the cover.

The upcoming power cover does sound interesting though.

      • I will try my luck and refer to this deal and the receipt which was uploaded earlier 603 for surface pro + touch cover. If not I'll try and see their best price for 64gb. I'm a reasonable haggler.

Time to start taking advantage of your kids again.

if we dont have kids, can we adopt

    • is there a coupon code for like 50% off the cost of adopting and raising a kid?

    • Do it the ozbargain way and split one/share it around with the rest of us.

  • Anyone know when we can expect a price drop of the Surface Pro 2? I'm guessing it probably won't be until the Pro 3 is released. But I have my fingers crossed. I will probably be getting it a student prices if my student email still works at the time.

    • Doubtful. The price drops are probably due to excess stock of previous gen hardware (Pro/RT). If you check the online microsoft store (or some local stores) you'll find the Pro 2 is out of stock. Hence, no discount.

The Pro 2 is a second gen device, so Microsoft should have a better idea of demand by now. I'm not sure if we'll see these big discounts on it.

  • How long does this student discount go for?

    • Valid from 10 February 2014 until 23 May 2014, while supplies last.

      • thanks buddy

      • While supplies last?

        LOL

  • Do they still sell the "flagship" RT model?

    • +1

      Link

You probably could've found it with two clicks in half the time you typed out the comment, but anyway.

      • +1

        can you type sarcasm?

  • 7-15 days idle life

    Count me in!

  • Anyone know the leadtime from Microsoft if I order one?

    • My last order from them (An xbox 360) was shipped the afternoon I ordered it, arrived next day.

I still don't know how that happened but I've never heard anyone complain about shipping time from there.

  • Been asking around at JB and Harvey Norman, both places couldnt do this good of a price, so if i were you i would just get it here, and if you arent a student, the price is 599, then you are better off getting it at JB or Harvey Norman

    • does JB offer the student pricing?

      • nahh they dont, the best i could get was 587 and thats only particular stores, some people wont even give me a better price than the pricetag

        • If they're offering it for $587, then even if I weren't a student, I'd just get it from Microsoft for $599 anyway, free shipping. It'll cost you like more than $10 to get to JB and back anyway.

  • Hey everyone, I'm a student & looking for either a tablet or a smaller laptop for uni.
I'm used to using my laptop at home, the hp probook 4730s, but at 17.3", it's a little big to carry around.
Anyone recommend getting this one at this price? or would a laptop over the tablet be more functional?
    Pre-emptive cheers for any advice(:

    • As always, depends on your needs. I would never, ever suggest a tablet for any productivity and if you pick up Surface, you're almost obligated to purchase a type cover which is not cheap and might blow out your savings.

If you're looking at a secondary machine, you can do worse than a Surface but the poor battery on the first gen is worrying. Don't expect all day battery life and with $600+ I'd rather hunt for a cheap haswell machine on sale, or even a chromebook.

      • +1

The new Toshiba Chromebook CB30-002 was a bargain on Sunday with the 10% off for $360 delivered, running the new Celeron 2955u Haswell chip with CPU score of 1533 in PassMark score. No way near the power of an ULV i5, but more than the new Atom Z3740 ( 1061 ) in the Asus T100, hence zippy performance is reported.

Your not getting a super sharp 1080p FHD touchscreen, but you are getting a bigger 13.3" screen better suited for productivity, with a decent keyboard and a claimed 9+ ( 6-7 in real world ) battery life. Has good reviews too. Only 16 GB storage, includes free for two years 100 GB cloudstorage and fullsize SD slot. You get dual-band Wi-Fi, and also Bluetooth 4.0, as well as 2 x usb3 and a full size HDMI port. Now $399, still good value for people willing to try the Chrome World.

      • I had a look at the chromebooks a couple months ago, but the cloud service isn't completely appealing to me since during peak & exam times the uni wifi is ridiculously slow. The tablet form is probably more appealing for me compared to an ultrabook just for portability's sake right now

      • Thanks for the tip! I've had a look at the keyboards & they seem to be doing a discount on them too, but 20/30% isn't really up to ozB standards. I may have to do the uni student thing & grovel to the parents to guarantee my loan for a keyboard :p

    • +3

Do you need to annotate/write notes on your tablet? The stylus alone is worth it for me. Combined this with Microsoft onenote it becomes a very powerful tool for uni. If you want a device to consume then a Ipad is better suited but if you want a device for productivity the surface is good.

      • Cheers for the tip! I've got the ipad atm, but I'm finding it next to useless at uni, all the good apps that would help with note taking & is actually compatible with the uni software are paid, plus, watching lectures & so forth on it is such a gruelling task! I'm trying out my friend's tomorrow so will definitely test out the stylus! (:

        • Yeh I went with the ipad route initially and thought that I could write with those fat rubber stylus since it was so popular. It gathered dust for a while and eventually gave it away. Its not so bad if you use it for typing some notes with a extra keyboard. Also check out onenote audio recording that syncs with your handwriting. It lets you hear what the lecturer said at that given time when you wrote that note.

    • This is the exact reason I picked up a surface pro a month ago - my laptop was just too heavy to carry around school . It's great! It can do everything my laptop can do! I don't have the keyboard cover for it, but the touch screen does me fine and the pen is great to write with!

      • Thanks for your advice! Bumped into someone at uni today using the surface & he loves it so I'm leaning towards it now(:

        • Bumped into someone at uni today using the surface

          And they dropped it?

          I'm leaning towards it now

          Crisis averted.

    • Back in the day, when I went back and completed my first Masters, I used a Toshiba M200 with Wacom pen digitizer. I took all my notes using hand-writing and turned PDFs into electronic One-note pages (this was before you could easily ink on PDF).

It is a full PC, 128GB is plenty if you're not storing lots of movies/games. You can always buy a 64gb or 128GB microsd card and store other stuff on the sd card.

Typing doesn't seem to keep as much 'in' as writing. And most of your exams will be written. maybe with the classes you're taking, it's multiple choice and computer based. clacking away also make a bit of a racket and can be distracting for other students and colleagues.

If you can get Office 365 through university, it costs $99 for 4 years, two PC devices - Mac or Windows, plus two mobile devices and web-access. Why office 365 - get OneNote 2013 and ability to share notes, ppts, etc with class-mates, etc. If you can sit close enough, you can also pick up the audio and I think you can digitize that as well (don't bother with audio anymore for meetings).

I started my MBA using an IPad - but gave up trying to get the crayon-link styluses working. I ended up getting a HP TM2T direct-import from the US. Don't underestimate the utility of a full pen-digitizer PC.

Use OneDrive or DropBox or Box to keep you notes and data in the cloud, share stuff with students, test each other, etc.

Most universities have a lot of powerplugs, etc, so you can probably quick-charge the surface pro and get most of the battery life back. That wasn't the case back 10 years ago…

      • Thanks for the advice. So far I haven't jumped on the cloud bandwagon yet, but i should be soon, & dropbox is definitely one of the more a popular ones on campus. I'll have to learn how to take digital notes too since I'm still doing it the old fashioned way with a quill & ink!

        • I think people go old fashioned for a reason. I wish I had an iPad so I could refer to lecture slides every now and then. And I have seriously considered getting a Surface Pro just for the stylus because I do maths and pretty much always have to do hand written stuff. Personally I feel as if it isn't worth it, mainly cause I don't want my "book" dying on me halfway through a lecture, and in lecture theatres (or Uni in general) it can be the biggest pain to fight over power points, when imagine if you had just a physical book - no need to even consider this

  • Everyone keeps bagging the battery life, i have owned one since launch day, May last year. What you are all forgetting…. THIS IS A FULL FUNCTIONING PC. And it has the full HD display.
    this is an absolute ozbargain!

    • True, but Ultrabooks manage to have better battery life so it's not impossible. Personally I think 2-3 hours is enough for me but then I would use it in front of the TV next to a powerpoint anyway.

      • You do realise that ultrabook batteries are like double in size and capacity right? They use the same ULV chips in both form factors, with the tablet igpu slightly underclocked.

    • I'll take 4-5 hours anyday. My 1st gen samsung slate lasts an hour and 50 on light browsing.

      • Well my surface pro lasts upwards of 5hours on heavy internet browsing.

  • +3

Plus pay another $100 bucks and grab a 128gb microSD card. Otherwise it has usb3.0 use a usb or usb hdd if space is an issue. Put the recovery file to usb to free up the disk. Lower the cpu to 50 or 70%, it all saves battery, change the res to 720p? I get well over 4hours battery life.

yes the surface pro is double the price, but for a student this is ideal.

    • Where can you get a 128Gb microsd card for $100?

      • Ok so $127 from amazon, otherwise get a usb3.0 128gb from office works for $75

  • So if i have a kid in kindergarten can i get one for "her" ..? hehehe

  • nice. I'm flying over seas in April, so 500 for me :)

  • So can you set this up to dual boot into Ubuntu?

  • +2

BTW the new POWER COVER just got a release date, will be shipping on 19 march for US, not sure when for Australia but should be soon after. us price is $199, be sure that it will be more here:/
    http://www.engadget.com/2014/03/10/microsoft-power-cover/
though I still cant justify buying surface+this over an ultrabook..

  • Should point out that the Microsoft Store offers a Two week no questions returns policy

    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/DisplayHelpR…

    • Yeh thats not the problem, the problem is their crazy pricing, 200 for a keyboard, thats a lot of money, i can buy a fully functioning laptop for 300:/

      • +1

If you like rump steak that's up to you but I prefer porterhouse :)

      • +1

Why are you looking at tablets when you're happy to buy an elcheapo laptop?

Yes the battery is somewhat of a rip, but compared to others in the same market, it's actually good. Only other tablet in the ivy bridge i5 range that can compete with 5+ hours is the asus transformer book, which costs ~$1200. Same with the surface pro 2 and dell venue 11 pro.

        • thats not what i meant, all im saying is for the price of a keyboard one could buy a medicore laptop, not saying i would, just trying to say how ridiculously overpriced MS keyboard is, however if your happy to pay over 200 dollars for a keyboard be my guest and enjoy ur porterhouse steak my friend:P

        • +2

You're forgetting that it isn't just a keyboard. It is has a battery as well.

Have you ever bought a replacement battery for a laptop? They're always $120-200. That means the keyboard is actually about $0-80.

  • Buy or No Buy :(

Got JB HiFi to match the $539 Microsoft Student pricing, and got the type cover 2 down to $110 from $150.

    • Yes! Please share the receipt if it's not too much trouble, I'd definitely like to try jb if I can get it cheaper! Thanks

    • mind sharing the receipt? I would order from MS store just now but it's out of stock. so, I will take my chance on JB. might need your receipt though as a prove. thanks :)

  • Any chance you would be able to share a copy of the receipt. I have called around and they can't match it.

    Thanks.

  • Darn good price, I thought I had a good deal when I bought one last month for $698 including the touch cover….thinking of buying another at this price for wifey if not for the short battery life.

    • Maybe you should keep her plugged in to the mains!
