Microsoft Surface Pro with Windows 8 - 64GB for $497 from JB Hi-Fi

290

I'm surprised this was not posted before. Only the 128GB model was posted a couple of weeks ago, and is still available at $598.

I got one earlier today, and they did the keyboard for $112. When asked how long the special is for, I was told "while they have stock, because they are expecting the new model".

Saw this in my mail, was so not bothered to post this.

part of the description says windows 8 uses significant storage - its due to the pack up. you can buy an 8gb usb for like $6 and make the back up and delete it increasing storage.

    great price.

    • from a previous deal:

128GB Surface Pro ships with 83GB free, 64GB has only 23GB.

might wanna invest in the storage if you need it

this was posted several times, so dupe, here:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/134903

    • Expired haggled deal requiring pricematching with a receipt for a different price. How is that a dupe?

      • +1

oh I guess coz the deal didnt say expired I assumed it was still on, my bad

Not even the same price. You're just annoyed because there's so many damn Surface deals. I hate the thing itself personally, but these are all good and valid deals!

  • Bought one of these yesterday from JB Hi-Fi, they would not budge at all with the price. A bit disappointing, visited three stores to see if I could get a better price :P

Either way this tablet is bloody brilliant. I'm honestly surprised at how well it performs with Windows 8.1.

  • I'm keen on one of these for uni but would need the type cover - what's the cheapest way people have found to get one of those?

These things are just getting too cheap not to buy now!! I snapped on one of the 128G ones yesterday from JBs. These are seriously powerful tablets… I'm coming from Acer and Samsung Android tabs after being totally frustrated by their slow response and general chunkiness. This thing just powers along, now even better after upgrading to 8.1. Only thing I'm not thrilled about is the heat it produces! For the money, you can't go wrong.

I paid $1000 a year ago for an Acer W700 that is exact same specs/performance as this (except mine is an 11.7 inch screen and 128GB).
I would say this is a very good pad for the price.

The Atom-based Win8 tabs of today are not far behind either. They are getting pretty powerful. I am eyeing the Lenovo Miix 2 weighing only 350grams!

Im regreting buying a samsung galaxy tab 3 10.1, I don't know wtf i didnt get one of these. :-(

  • can this run LoL?

    • I'm installing it as we speak. There have been a few videos on YouTube showing ARAM maps being able to run at a playable FPS.

Most reports are saying yes. Hearthstone runs absolutely fine on my Surface Pro too! :)

    • it should run 720p low at around 40fps

someone posted in comments before but yeh not posted as a deal.

i've been hesitant tbh even at this price, simply cause batt life. seems like for me just for web browsing, pdf viewing, etc (typical uni student stuff) any tablet would suffice (not gonna be typing most of the time). i considered using the digitizer to replace my books but the LAST thing i want is my freaking book running out of battery (have enough trouble with my phone :P).

but yeh might wait for ASUS T100 to drop down again, but not sure as this device is just so much sexier. but at 3-4 hours of batt life just won't cut it for me (powerpoints aren't exactly placed very conveniently in my lecture theatres)

    • You can always charge your surface in between lectures. The student cafe is usually a good spot, if not the library.

      • +1

Yeah, I like both the Surface Pro & T100, but there are always going to be tradeoffs.

        Choose Surface: processing power.
        Choose T100: battery life.

        Decisions, decisions…

yeh but dont u rather be grabbing a bite or hanging out with friends instead of charging ur tablet during breaks?

        • -1

At my uni there are outdoor tables for eating with powerpoints for you to charge laptops/tablets/phones.

        • -1

My uni has "powerbars", basically stations with a whole heap of cords hanging that you can grab and charge.

  • How is this comparable to Acer W700 at $699 comes with cradle and folio BT keyboard … with 128gb ssd and 4G ram?

  • I won't buy this tablet because battery life sux. The whole point of tablet is longer lasting usage.

    • +3

The whole point of tablet is longer lasting usage.

That's not the point of tablets with ultrabook internals. It's to be able to finally carry a desktop replacement that's smaller than a laptop. These tablets are aimed at content creation, not consumption - that's what androids/ios tablets are for.

  • Isn't this really a laptop in tablet form?

    • It's got laptop specs, which is what makes it so great, especially at this price. No compromise when using it for productivity purposes.

  • Went into JB in Armadale tonight. Best they could do was $707 for the 128GB and the Type Cover 2. I can get the student discount through MS online store so not a great deal for me but might be useful for someone else.
