it's a pity that the public transport price was increase from $3.50 to $6 in one go.

i used to always go into the city to go shopping, get a coffee and something to eat, but never do it anymore. (yes, i realise it's only $2.50, but it's a big increase, why spend $6 when i can drive to a shopping center and park for free or just shop online).

Where do you park for free in the city buying just a coffee and something to eat?

      • +9

        the suburbs.

i'd rather drive to a suburban shopping center and park for free than pay $6 to take public transport into the city.

if they want to attract people into the city to spend money (which is what this event is), they should reduce (subsidise) the price of public transport tickets on the weekend.

Absolutely spot on. It used to make going out to the city as a group of four mates that much more affordable. Drive down to the station, park the car and jump on the train. It'd cost under $15 and you were set. Now it costs $10 more before you even start. We can go to a coffee shop down the local plaza or even the local suburban DFO's and have almost as much shopping places to go and equally as nice eateries without spending the $25 it costs to get to the city now.

It is the typical greed mentality that all levels of government have. The Queen Vic Market, controlled by the Melbourne city council, raised the minimum parking charge from $6 to $8 in January. A 33% increase. It is like they are doing their utmost to ensure that as few people as possible use these services only for them to cry poor when revenue is down.

          the suburbs.

          so not the city?

i'd rather drive to a suburban shopping center and park for free than pay $6 to take public transport into the city.

the city offers things such as this deal that no suburban shopping center centre does :)

attract people into the city to spend money (which is what this event is)

fyi most shops won't be open 7pm-7am

        • they should reduce (subsidise) the price of public transport tickets on the weekend.

how about a free/subsidised private uber car? :)

    • Public transport is now $6. Since when ???

      • +1

since 1st of february, was part of the yearly fare increase. on weekends it's $6 a day on public transport instead of $3.50 in 2013

      • For the weekend services, since 1 January 2014. It used to be $3.

    • you have to consider people who don't drive. last year there were no extra trains and all the transport stopped at midnight, so people who didn't drive couldn't go unless they wanted to go home when the action had barely started

  • She said drive to a shopping Centre…. not the city.

    • -6

She said that did she? Getting the sarcasm yet?

You sheep sure took your time catching up…

I won't be going this year. Last year was crazy busy. Could hardly move and we were literally packed in like sardines. It was almost impossible to see anything and it was chaotic with little in the way of information or directions.

I dread to think what would have happened if there'd been an accident or fire.

    • I don't think this year will be as busy. It will only be 23 degrees this year unlike last year's 40 or so.

      • +2

wouldnt people rather go out if they arent going to be sweating balls like the 40 last year you said?
23 sounds perfect so perhaps it would be even busier

    • Same we went last year and it was the busiest night, almost as busy as new year.

    • I know what you mean, we went to the opera instead that night. Outside people smelled like throw up and public toilets! The trams were so crowded that people stuck to you and soon you smelt like them! Light show's great if you get a spot at the front though. But it will take you around 45mins to get from the Arts Center to the Library.

  • Anyone know any good places to park?

    • outside of the city. that's what white night is recommending. all of the city parking garages will probably be full well before 7

Excellent. Last year was insanely hot at night. Don't kno if any of u stayed for the Cat Empire performance but that was one uncomfortable crowd to b in.

Nevertheless it was a good night. Def need to plan in advance cos everything is spread out

I found it ironic that once a year we have to switch off electricity for an hour and then for once a year we get to turn them back on for 12 hours.

  • I agree, last year was madness and I have no real interest to go again this year. Pushing through hoards of people at about 1 meter every 10 seconds is not my idea of a fun time, although I have to admit what was on offer was pretty good. I think the best way to do it is go after 1am when the crowds start to thin out and stay up till sunrise.

Is this really a deal? More of a forum post really.
I am tempted to check this out, but the sheer number of people put me off.

  • So if you're going alone, what's there to do? Any tips?

    • +1

      see all the above?

      • Haha, good point. Wasn't thinking straight when I wrote the above.

    • Gorgeous photos!!

A lot of my friends want to go this year- they're all photogs. Had any issues with all your gear??

      • +1

I shoot alot of events (have a look at the rest of my flickr :)…the biggest issue i find is size and weight.
        * carry as least as possible, it's a very long time to be carrying things.
        * take up as little space as possible, you will be able to fit into smaller gaps in the very dense crowds. wide backpacks will slow you down.
        * for lens choices, I brought along wide lenses for landscapes and fast primes for low light.
        * if you like landscapes, consider lugging around a compact/light tripod and a remote release cable.

The event was swarming with photographers last year, I expect no different this year.

        • Thanks for the heads up!
