Finally. I mean IDC but at least foxtel doesn't have the exclusive rights anymore. They are still working together tho ☹️. I'm also counting on them having a trial especially because they are essentially unknown here and need to get subscribers first.

    • +2

I read no free trial available, but a "free" annual sub comes with a annual Dashpass sub…

      • In the US, the Basic with ads is free with Dashpass which is likely to be the case here as well

      • Oh really. Interesting to see how well it goes then

    • +10

foxtel are losing complete rights to hbo

      • +1

Yes but foxtel customer will get free access so they are still working together. I said they are losing rights to it

        • +1

So having Foxtel which I do mainly for NRL I will get this sub channel for free? I’m guessing it’s the basic ads one but still good to watch TLOU

        • +2

They aren’t working together. Foxtel just bought a million basic with ads subscriptions from HBO.

          • -2

@Pinchy: I'm saying some people will stay because they are getting "free" max. I was hoping foxtel didn't have HBO at all but at least it's not exclusive anymore.

      • Good!

      • Didn't Foxtel just sell off their pay tv business?

    • Foxtel was sold to DAZN including all but Sky News. DAZN is a sports channel elsewhere, so perhaps they won't continue with HBO or similar channels.

      https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-12-23/foxtel-sold-to-billio…

  • I see some shows on HBO Max that Foxtel have exclusivity on.

    House of dragon
    White lotus

Is HBO coming to kill Foxtel?

    • +5

I read House of Dragon and The White Lotus will be on Max, and removed from Binge after a grace period. Presuming everything HBO will be on the new platform, so that should eliminate the Foxtel exclusivity..

      • +11

        Foxtel on life support.

        • +1

Partially Saudi owned so they wont get a cent from many now.

    • Yes

    • So HBO shows won't be on Binge anymore?

  • +6

I wouldn’t be pulling the trigger on this “deal”. Binge are rumoured to offer free MAX membership (at least in the short term) to somehow maintain any form of relevance once their content disappears.

      Thanks 👍

Note the purported subs extending from Binge to Max is only for Basic with ads..

      • is only for Basic with ads.

        perfect….

Sailing the high seas on a fire stick becoming more attractive by the day

        • is this easy to do? any chance you could point me in the direction of a treasure map for this? or some other helpful starting advice if its not allowed?

          • -1

            @croccer: I use Stremio + AIOStreams add-on + Real-Debrid + EasyDebrid + TorBox.

            • +4

@Futura: Why so many add-ons? Stremio + RD + Torrentio should be all you need, right?

              • @rickb: I use AIOStreams because it combines results from other addons (Torrentio, Mediafusion, Comet, Debridio) into one plus it provides additional control over how results are displayed.

Torrentio, Mediafusion, Comet, Debridio are just databases. One database might have something which another might not have. So it's good to have variety and not just depend on the one database.

EasyDebrid and TorBox are just additional debrid providers and provides additional redundancy. Something might be available on EasyDebrid that isn't available on Real-Debrid. Usually for me it's 4K Linux isos that are more readily available on ED vs RD.

              • @rickb: This. Do a search people, on Reddit.

The Pitt isn't a bad show.

Used to have HBO Max set up ages ago with a VPN sign up. Didn't work after a while when changing to max.

            • @Futura: I have the same as @rickb.

What do you get from adding AIOStreams, EasyDebrid and TorBox?

              • @sav11: I use AIOStreams because it combines results from other addons (Torrentio, Mediafusion, Comet, Debridio) into one plus it provides additional control over how results are displayed.

Torrentio, Mediafusion, Comet, Debridio are just databases. One database might have something which another might not have. So it's good to have variety and not just depend on the one database.

                • @Futura: Thanks, appreciate the response and explanations.

I was just researching them. Looks like I should start over if I want to use AIOStreams as you shouldn't have the add-ons separately, only through AIOStreams…any idea if that's right?

Do you know if any of the debrid providers are better for Australian or niche content? I noticed with RealDebrid there's no streams available for e.g Australian Survivor.

                  • @sav11: You can run AIOStreams alongside other add-ons but they advise not to as it would be querying the database twice essentially, which would be bad for the hoster if you're using the free version.

I randomly checked two episodes of S12 Australian Survivor and it's available to download from RD, ED, and little bit of TorBox (I probably wouldn't bother with these guys to be honest). Lots of results with Comet, Mediafusion, and Debridio, some with Torrentio.

                    • @Futura: Thanks for that. Do you happen to know of a decent guide for setting up AIOStreams?

Yeah it was a previous season of Australian Survivor I couldn't stream with RD & Torrentio.

    • +1

From I read of the article it is Foxtel that are offering their customers the Max Ad membership. Binge customers aren't specified, so may not get anything.

      • +1

Prior articles have only described the conventional foxtel I.e IQ4 customer base. There hasn't been anything concrete for the binge streamotion service has there?

    • +1

Foxtel's (confirmed weeks ago) Max Basic membership deal is for Foxtel iQ subscribers only. Binge subscribers get nothing.
      https://www.foxtel.com.au/hbo-max.html

      • Does this suggest Max will only be viewable on an iQ box and not Foxtel Go or Max app?

        • Max app will be available on iQ 3+ and the Hubbl puck/glass.

    • Pretty sure your link says only foxtel subscribers are being offered free Max accounts, not binge subscribers

  • No free trial ?

    • -1

      free trial ?

      Depends on the crime.

  • +1

I’m hoping Discovery channel etc will be latest episodes directly from US rather than the watered-down versions like fetch uses which shows older episodes from two or three years ago

  • +1

Any cash back reward thru ShopBack or other similar 3rd party websites?

  • +4

I’ve had the Brazilian one for years, $80 a year for full 4K no ads

    • Do you need VPN to watch

      • +1

Yeah because they haven’t launched here, I anticipate vpn wouldn’t be needed once they launch here, cause I can watch vpning to any country with max

    • -7

I’ve had the Brazilian one for years

Did it leave a rash ?

    • How did you renew your Brazilian subscription? Unfortunately, none of my debit or credit cards work.

    • Which country do u vpn to? Does it only work for Brazil? I’d imagine US would have the most content?

      • It works when your IP address is in any territory where Max is available. However, if you sign up for a Brazilian account, you can only use a Brazilian credit or debit card to make payments, which seems to be the new policy.

        • Will a Revolut card not work using Brazilian currency?

          • +1

@Snagsandonions: The issue isn’t the currency but the country where your debit or credit card was issued. A few years ago, I used an Australian credit card without any problems when it was called HBO Max. However, when that card expired, the new Max no longer accepted a card that didn’t match the country where my account was registered (Brazil).

    • was it always $80? now it's like $132 when i tried to sign up

  • +2

    RIP Foxtel

    • -2

given it was recently purchased by DAZN who would have known what was coming I'm not sure they care so much, think DAZN wanted NRL/AFL rights & have deep pockets plus they are in a lot of other countries

unrelated would love to see the death of Binge, anyone who pays Luai money to advertise their product can (profanity) off

      • Nrl are encouraging Netflix and Amazon to bid for the next round of rights and theres strong rumours espn/disney+ are showing interest.

        • +1

it's all about the money, I think they need to be careful who gets the rights, look at union I'd say that selling the tv rights to a pay tv provider that has low market share contributed to it's demise though rugby australia have done a great job of screwing it too

          • @Irishness: Netflix and Amazon have solid marketbases and disneys is improving now basketball is on there under espn.

            • @Christopher Scott: netflix would make sense as they build their sports offering given they have the largest % market share so plenty already have a sub & have a large database of non sports, amazon those that have it get prime delivery etc but how many have a sub purely for their pay tv offering & specifically sports? Disney don't have enough content for the average subscriber so they dip in & out though I get that it's increasing sports wise with ESPN / basketball but it's just fragmenting sports further. Stan & Optus sports IMO are the least value offerings given the lack of content / variety of sports. The more the market fragments the more people sail the high seas of IPTV & stremio etc

              • @Irishness: Amazon has alot of sport globally its just lacking in Australia although they still have improved on their cricket coverage lately. Id be very surprised if they didnt aim to get 20 percent of the nrl games. They have a large Premierleague package in England and they use sport to grow marketshare globally.

I find Prime video better to watch than Netflix lately might be due to netflix having a horrible algorithm.

  • +6

Far out and these are introductory offers? Thats rough, starting out the market at netflix prices. Yo ho!

    • +4

HBO max has much higher quality shows than Netflix imo

      • +7

Sure do, just don’t produce enough shows annually to warrant paying an ongoing subscription.

      • +2

Problem is, as rkel403 mentioned - they don't spit out as much content as often, when its subscription based theres a pretty good argument for a streaming service consistently providing you with new content. Its all opinion based of course, if HBO tickles your pickle then thats obviously the right choice, but I think pricing should be based on current output, not previous catalogues, if they don't structure it this way I can only see more and more people going to the seven seas.

The only $20+ streaming service I can justify now is Youtube premium and that's because youve got tens of thousands of quality content creators pushing out content on a daily basis, plus the catalogue of what already exists, plus my own moral obligation to support what is probably the biggest archive on the internet when you are counting pure data amounts.

      • +3

Quality, yes. Variety and widespread appeal, no.

      • +2

Yes but you can watch all their quality shows in a month. At these prices they are a short term subscribe, binge and then dump.

    • Netflix prices are much higher

      • +1

No they aren't really, premium here is the same as middle of the road netflix but remember this is an introductory offer, I would love to see what they are planning for the standard pricing, if it isn't bang on netflix pricing it will be pretty damn close I am sure.

  • +11

    Pay to watch ads lollll.

    7seas streaming still wins arrrgghhh

  • +5

The fact that you have ads for the basic tier is always a red flag.

Why not make a free tier if you're gonna put ads in it?

    • -3

Because TV shows (particularly HBO) have production values of Hollywood movies now and can't be supports purely on real life insurance advertisments.

If you want free then watch the cheap to produce reality TV shows on FTA, plenty of that still around.

  • Aren't these guys late to the party?

    • +1

in Oz maybe but when they own the rights to certain popular series then they will always attract subscribers, wouldn't imagine they have huge setup costs it's not like they are starting from scratch they are huge elsewhere

    • +3

Not when they arrive with exclusives on:

Game of Thrones franchise (incl House of the Dragon etc)
      Dune: Prophecy
      The Last of Us
      True Detective
      The Sopranos
      Succession
      Chernobyl
      The Wire
      Westworld
      Hacks
      Band of Brothers
      etc

      • +4

I heard Westworld isn’t available on streaming. In the USA anyway. It was cheaper for them to not have it available than to pay royalties for it.

  • 🦃 brother, are you there?

  • +2

Does this mean binge is going to lose most of its content?

  • +3

    Finally.

    Binge is dog water.

No hdr, the 4k looks like ass.

  • +1

Introducing a new steaming service into the already crowded market doesn’t actually benefit anyone.

    • +6

Essentially we are back to where we were in the Foxtel dominance era, you need to subscribe to 8 different "packages" @ $15 a month to get access to everything…

The only advantage now if you can pick and choose each month and subscribe and cancel as you please… Bit of mental Labor keeping track of it all though.

  • +1

Wonder how they'll enforce any household sharing rules. Even the Disney ones seems to have kicked in harder recently.

No sign of an extra fee to allow to add a household.

    • bohn linked below an announcement from Max cracking down on household sharing.

  • +9

    Yeah nah.

    I'll stick to RD

    • +3

The more paying streaming platforms they release and the more fragmented they make their offerings, the greater the incentive to use and "alternative" streaming service!

    • God it makes me wanna cry how good RD is……

  • 🤦🏻‍♂️ I just bought 1 year of US HBO Max for $10 a month with ads that I use with VPN. This was after 30% discount.

  • +2

RD still going perfectly, these fragmented US services are laughable in comparison.

    • RD?

      • +1

        Real Debrid.

Use it with Kodi, Stremio, Syncler etc for all your viewing needs.

        • Yep. Reddit has easy to follow guides to get you going.

    • Is it still working normally after the "upheaval"?

      • Works fine for me. Debrid Media Manager to load links, refresh my library and content is there. Pretty flawless playback on a 50mbps connection.

      • Yeah I've had no issues touchwood

  • +1

and with that, binge is proper dead
