  • I'd wait till all the other retailers start stocking it to see what their prices are

  • +13

Best price they can do is $235. So just ask them :)

    • That's what I just got from Chaddy. They even said Cuek's posted receipt was a fake etc. Even Cranbourne said the same, and wanted $243 lol So, just a heads up to safe your time buying from JB mob.

    • Tried to pricematch using receipt at JB HiFi Westpoint Blacktown. No go…sales guy said receipt looked dodgy & was fake & also said they don't discount phones (sales tactics?), but I stared at the phone while in contemplation; he offered $235, but I haggled it down to $230 lowest they were willing. Anyway $11 dearer (than $219), but still good.

  • +1

Does it have micro SD card option to extend memory? Without that it is tough decision as 8 GB is not enough.

For user 4.5 GB memory it is difficult to choose to install apps or store music/videos. Google Cloud is not worth as it will consume lot of data.

    • No it doesn't, better hold off for the 16gb version
Also battery is not replaceable. Though the back cover comes off, probably for other back cover accessories.

  • +8

A $70 mark up comparing to the U.S price really kills the main attraction of this phone. Instead of competing with the sub $200 market it's now in the $300 segment game.

    • +16

      and only 8Gb!
Seriously, 16Gb should be the minimum if you're not including SD support.

    • +2

That depends I've got quite a few friends who bought the Nexus 4 8G and they seem to be fine with it. But for $243 I would definitely add a bit more for a Nexus 4.

      • +1

        This has dual SIM though.

      • +14

Yup and they are making you to pay a premium for it.

Pros on Nexus 4: Doubled CPU performance, Doubled RAM, Doubled storage.
Pros on Moto G: DOUBLE DA SIM-SLOT :P.

        • +3

Pros on Moto G: Its actually for sale via reputable channels. Nexus 4 has been removed from the Play store for an eternity. To buy one now, its ebay or grey imports.

        • +3

An eternity? Wow, only seems like last year to me.

        • +7

Last year is an eternity in the tech world.

    • +13

      $200USD + $26.55 AUD conversion + $22.66 GST = 249.21

But hey, don't let logic get in the way of your cliched bitching about Australian pricing.

      • Only if $200USD = $179USD for you in Australia or (anywhere else on this planet for the matter)

        • I thought $179 was the single SIM model?

    • +6
      1. The 180 USD price is excluding sales tax.
      2. The AUD is around 90c
      3. This is dual sim as opposed to single sim.
      4. The othe dual sims at this price range are, well how should I put this, CRAP.

Best price at the moment. ($235)

Also, no news on 16GB release in Aus.

  • +2

I don't understand why they wouldn't chuck in expanded memory if they are offering 8/16GB

    • +8

Because Google now own Motorola and they want you to use Google Drive.

      • +10

What Google does not realize is that not all countries have affordable mobile broadband rate.

        • Exactly… Broadband is 'generally' sub par for value here.

        • +2

It's the total opposite if you're on prepaid, e.g. when visiting the US. Their prepaid data rates are shockingly horrible - US$60 for 2GB on AT&T.

        • $15 for 2Gb on prepaid here is hardly shocking. Approx 1 hours income on minimum pay rates.
It is expensive compared to developing Asian countries, but pretty competitive against OECD.

      • -1

Actually, they just sold Motorola to Lenovo a week or two ago..

edit: just realised how old this deal is :) oops..

    • +1

Someone said it is to make people use google drive, however I remember reading somewhere that it is because google strongly dislikes the way sd cards work inside the operating system. Something to do with formatting and some other crap, but basically it makes the phone messy and causes a whole lot of issues.

Of course it's nicer to have an SD slot, and it's likely that big sellers like samsung's galaxy lines and such won't stop having SD, because it sells. However, and I can see where google is coming from, google doesn't like it.

I have to agree with google. My galaxy s2 had issues all over the place with the way it handled data. I couldn't tell what storage my stuff was using half the time, but I guess I was a bit lazy and made it pretty messy myself.

      • +4

Yeah, but on the flip-side, my S3 has never had issues with using an SD card.
I'd guess it because of people wanting to run apps off their SD card, which I have never needed/wanted to do. Really all mine is used for is storing downloaded Spotify music, which the app automagically does if the SD card has more space than internal, and photos.

I guess I could actually live with only having 16/32gb data, but just having the SD card always in there for some things is nice, like Nandroid backups which are fairly big.

        • I had the 32gb model until it got smashed but at fault not on purppse.
The 32gb was good enough now I have moved to the note 2 and 16gb and I find it pushing the lmits for storage for me.

Sd cards are great for quick storage of removable data but I am starying to use google drive and it is easier to access that then moving cards around or cables.

Also with other formats im all for but mtp im not.
I find a big issue with linux when using mtp with my note and tab 2. Another reasom for keep a small partition and running xp for them just in case moments.

      • +2

I'm not 100% sure, but I think implementing microSD would require patent royalties be paid to Microsoft over the FAT32 format. I see this brought up a lot, but no definitive proof, unfortunately.

        • Poor excuse, they could use a Free Filesystem that has a myriad of benefits over crappy old FAT32 (ie ext4) and now with MTP, the only people that would notice are the people who understand what a filesystem is, and therefore would rejoice!

        • You're all forgetting the most obvious reason Google don't encourage SD-cards, it's confusing to average users.

Having data scattered across /storage/sdcard0 and /storage/sdcard1 is a pain.

      • The problem with this argument is that if Google doesn't like the way SD cards work in the operating system, they wrote the operating system. They can just change it so SD cards work nicely.

        • +1

Yeah because it's that simple. /facepalm The mount process under the hood is standard Linux. Or, let me guess, changing that would be simple too?

      • My Note2 completely agrees! SD card has most my apps. OS still shows some data on phone required. Eventually things starting getting weird. Then SD got corrupted/damaged. Formatted in phone. 5 days later it crapped again. Now "blank or unsupported file system". Awesome phone, OS, high quality card. But never putting anything important/running on the SD again.

        • Did the card happen to be a Sandisk MicroSDXC Class 10/UHS-I (the red/grey one) 32GB or 64GB?

For some reason there seemed to be a problem with those particular cards and the Note 2. I've had no corruption problems at all with other cards on all my phones. The Note 2 worked perfectly with a Samsung 32GB card.

        • Patriot class 10 16GB micro sdhc

        • Maybe it uses the same controller as the Sandisk, or your card is faulty. Plenty of people have no problems with their microsd cards in their phones.

I put my files on the sd card instead. That way if the phone dies, I won't lose access to all my files. It also makes changing phones easier - just move the card across and all my files are there.

  • Does anybody know how does DUAL SIM works with data? Can you use one sim for calls and another sim for data?

    • +1

Unless otherwise stated, almost all dual sim phones are calls+data access on one sim, calls only on the other.

    • +2

Both sims have calls or data …your choice…but only one sim is 3G…:(

      • +2

Pretty unusual. Makes the phone worth considering for some, despite the other limitations it has. No microsd, for one. Rules it out for me. Might have considered buying otherwise.

  • No online purchase option for JB it seems.

  • +5

I've been waiting for this phone since last years announcements but now its just not worth it, firstly it's not even under $200 when they said it would be, oh yea of course the U.S gets it at that price…..8GB with no SD bahahaha, major pass on this one.

Straight up, I'm getting a THL w300, screw Moto.

  • I bet you forgot about the crappy exchange rate right now. Making this more expensive then it should have been.

  • +5

you do know you can get online for $260 16gig delivered,

    http://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/motorola-moto-g-16gb…

    • Grey Import I'd guess, but might not be an issue.

  • +1

Why not go for the Motorola Razr M for $269? For a little bit more you also get 4G. http://www.dicksmith.com.au/unlocked-smart-phones/motorola-r…

    • +1

The Razr M is much weaker on CPU,GPU,Screen & OS update. Only advantages are 4G and micro SD

    • +4

      For 32 wise reasonsof course.

      • haha, cant beat those reasons can you

      • not to mention DUAL Sim (..compensation for not supporting 4G).

      • At least one of those 32 reasons isn't valid with the posted model…
Vastly more internal storage (in the Motorola Moto G) - 16 GB vs 8 GB - 8 GB more internal storage (than the Motorola Droid RAZR M 4G LTE)

        • astute pickup, yeah, equal 8000 MB's only.

    • Features Razr M has the Moto G does not are: 4G, NFC, Super AMOLED screen, Micro SD slot, 8MB camera with image stabilisation, 1080p video, DLNA

  • Just get from Amazon for US$179 (8G) or US$199 (16G)

    • +2

You have to use a shipping forwarder, Amazon won't ship it directly.

Once you add $20-30 or so for a forwarder you're looking at $225-$236 Aussie for the 8GB. Do you really want to give up your local warranty (and consumer protections) for $7?

Over at Amazon UK it's $225 shipped, but again how much do you want to save $18?

      • +3

Those shipping forwarders rip you off on exchange rates, add surcharges depending on payment type used and additional shipping costs, so it might be a little generous saying it'll only be $20-30 to get it here. If it only $20 more to get it locally now with local warranty from a brick and mortar store, I'd say you'd be silly not to choose to buy here.

    • +1

Don't think they are the dual SIM version either.

    • It would have to be Amazon UK.

  • Btw, can't believe they list "MP3 Player" as a feature. 720p display, 2030mAh battery, un-bloated Android, and they list MP3……………..

    • MP3 playback requires royalties to be paid, maybe they could omit MP3 playback to cover the licencing fees paid to Microsoft :-)

  • +1

I almost bought this for the wife on Amazon uk a few days ago.. price shipped was AUD220, and that was the best I could find. Now that the Nexus 4 isn't available on Google Play anymore for 300, I reckon this is a good option. Not as fast of course but great value for the money. Curious to see if it will get below the 200 mark in a few months selling in Australia.

  • Why we still don't have local stock of Moto X?!

    • +1

Because there is no non-US model yet. The US model won't work on our 4G/LTE networks.

The UK version will be out Feb 1, hopefully that'll work here fine. Hopefully then it'll just be a matter of time!

  • +2

I've had the single sim model of this phone for about 3 weeks now (bought from Amazon UK). Great phone if you can get over the limited storage and 5 megapixel camera. Battery life is excellent. Great display. It has handled everything I've thrown at it, and has already updated to Kit Kat.

  • +3

I saw on whirlpool people were buying these for around $215-225 today from JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys.

Yesterday I bought a 16GB dual SIM version for $229 from eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au (price changed to $239 today) plus $30~ for shipping and insurance but there is cheaper shipping from there as well.

  • +1

Got my hands on one today… not bad, bit heavy though…

    Got the 8GB version (single sim) for £91… (£99 Tesco Model + £10 discount + £2 unlocking fee = ~$170 )

If you are lucky enough to have someone in the UK… I suggest you look into it there, much cheaper!

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/tesco-mobile-motorola-moto-g… (out of stock atm but stock keeps coming and going)

    • Indeed, and you can get the 16GB version in the UK for £30 more, ~$226 I'd suggest that the extra space is more than worth it.

The UK version is not dual SIM, but how much use is that for most people?

  • +1

8gb of internal memory with no card slot. There has to be a strong reason to buy this.

  • This price for dual SIM Android phone with a well known brand is not bad

  • +2

    Someone posted an unboxing video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfyH_L8nbyg

  • I've had this phone for around a month now, got it from Tesco UK.

Absolutely blow away for the price, this is a sleek yet gratuitous phone with Gorilla glass showing off a crystal clear display. Android Kitkat keeping things smooth with minimal lag and lots of little nifty extras like Moto G security.

I love this phone, and I'd be hard pressed not to recommend it for anyone, from grandmas to students or serious techies. The price point is unbelievable for a phone of this calibre.

  • +1

I got it yesterday for $235 from JB Hifi. Very happy with the battery and the screen. Currently running two sims on it, one for data and voice and the other for voice only (you can only have data on either). You can run simultaneously with a option to cut off your data (default) if you receive a phone call on the other sim or redirect to voice message. Very clear voice reception on this beauty and feels really good for such a cheap price.

    • A bit early to tell if the battery is any good, give it three months. My Motorola Razr HD has a class leading battery capacity but after 6ish months it only lasts a few hours of average use.

  • Hi guys - is this the best phone I can get in Sydney right now for about 200ish dollars? Looking for 4G, big screen and decent brand name. Thanks.

    • +1

      No 4G on this one

    • Possibly the Razr M, which is $269 at Dick Smith? It's a bit of an old handset, but it has some features the G doesn't have, such as 4G, 8 MP camera, NFC and an AMOLED Display. Motorola have also said it will get an upgrade to Kit Kat. The Screen is only 4.3" though.

      http://www.dicksmith.com.au/unlocked-smart-phones/motorola-r…

        540 x 960 - pass.

  • +1

Picked up at good guys for 219. Asked for that price given the comment on whirlpool, referenced above. It was pretty much no hassle.

    Cheers!

    • Now that's a good buy.

  • +1

Yep.. $219 from JB hifi cranbourne….8 GB is plenty for me

    • +1

8GB is fine if you stream your music and don't play games (or play emulators + roms)

    • Did you tell jb to price beat itself?

    • can u post receipt plz so we can pm easier, thnx

      • here http://imgur.com/7yeXbix, hope it will help. some guy manage to get for $217

        • +2

Thanks Cuek. Managed to get for $219 from JbHiFi, Canberra. No questions asked. The guy did not even asked for the receipt. Looks like it will be under $200 in coming weeks, once 16 GB arrive.

    • YAY also got it for $219 from Sydney Westfield JB

  • Remember if you purchase this phone to sign up for the additional 50GB of Google Drive storage space for 2 years

Details how to get the additional space.
    https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod…

From what people are saying online, after the 2 years, you still get the space, you are just not able to add anything new.

Must be activated within 30days of recieving the phone.

Here is the link to the Australia Motorola Website confirming this is available here.
    http://www.motorola.com.au/consumers/Moto-G-Free-Storage/MOT…

    Another reason to buy!

    Cheers!

  • At this price, would it perhaps be better to go for a Kogan Agora HD+? Both have 8GB memory, and dual sim. The Kogan is $40 cheaper and has a bigger screen and quad core processor…

    • -2

but $40 for 2 years local warranty is worth beyond that ;)

      • +1

I bought this phone yesterday from the Good Guys….. and had a "discussion" with the manager as it says on the GG website it comes with 2 years Warranty…. um sorry guys there website is WRONG ONLY 12 MONTHS WARRANTY APPLIES!!
There website has now been updated.
On a side not Antu Benchmark is almost the same as Galaxy S3

  • Can someone upload a $219 receipt? Thanks.

  • Thanks. I have some DS gift cards. Waiting for DS to have them in stock.

  • 179 USD = AUD 205.44
    Add GST 10% = AUD 225.98

    And that's the Single-SIM model…

AU$243 for a Dual-SIM, with local warranty isn't half bad by that measure.

    • Lets not forget that US$179 doesn't include US sales tax too.

      • Which is why I added GST to get the AU$225.98 price

        • yes, I was pointing out the actual US price is higher than AUD$205 which makes the price difference between the US and here even lower.

  • Resolution = ??
