  • How reliable are MSY with online order and delivery? Would I likely encounter no response or a "ran out of stock" excuse? Or are all online order with delivery guaranteed?

    • as per my experience they are pretty reliable with online order.

  • +9

Apparently can install openWRT on the WD N750:
    http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/wd/n750

No Gargoyle or Tomato that I can find.

    • Would like to see people's reports if they install this - what works and what doesn't etc. I need the USB thing to do DLNA/SMB shares which the stock firmware seems to support.

      • +1

        if it aint broke…

        • I got OpenWRT on this thing. For $19 its worth it to mess around with! This router is a full blown Linux machine with OpenWRT. Not much you can't do with it, its quick too 128MB RAM.

    • so does it compare with cheap asus ones?

  • How do you know these are on sale?

    • +3

Sign up for their emails. :)

  • -3

    Out of stock.

    • Both are in stock in Adelaide.

      • +1

        In stock now.

        • If you can get to their web site. It appears to have crashed…

  • The Chipping Norton NSW store exists?!?!? It's been "Closed preparing for online store" according to their homepage for a very long while now, and yet the online delivery order was made to the store. Can any NSW online delivery orderers confirm that NSW online delivery actually works?

    • They converted the Chipping Norton store into the NSW online distribution warehouse.

  • great price for the router. ordered one, thanks OP. the only thing you might want to consider is the two USB 2 ports

    • Few noob Q's :|

So with a switch, can I just plug it into one of the existing router ports, and that will serve an extension of my existing router ?
A switch doesn't need its own IP, does it ?

And what do you mean by two USB ports in your post ?

      • Switch doesnt need its own IP. that is correct. they are just forwarders of data to the designated ip address.

Not to be confused with a Hub that forwards the data it receives to every device connected to it and the device picks the information addressed to it.

        • yeah, thanks for jogging my memory. Switch is basically as smart hub, ain't it ?

Just still waiting on a response on the comment about the USB ports. Do switches usually have USB ports ? What for ?

        • The switch doesn't have USB ports, the router does: "great price for the router"

As per bheart's response below, they're for sharing printer, scanner or storage on your network.

        • +1

Don't buy the WD N750 if you need to network your printer (you can buy a much more reliable dedicated printer server box for similar prices to this router) but if you want basic sharing of a couple of hard disks or memory sticks, it'll do the job fairly well. From experience, the print and scanner sharing on the WD router is rubbish, but the file sharing is very fast and reliable. WiFi performance isn't as good as many other routers, but it's fairly reliable.

        • +1

WiFi is reliable? Im reading online that the router needs to be reset every few days. I just need to use it as an access point. So since i wont be using the router functions im hoping it will work without needing a reset.

        • Whats the max HDD capacity it will support? Upto 4TB?

        • I have the 'little brother' of the N750 the N600 and have it set up as a 5Ghz AP, the thing is rock solid. Haven't ever had to reset it. I'd imagine the N750 would be similar?

My Fritzbox wireless on the other hand just decided to randomly stop working at times, but only notice it when I go to use my iPhone which is on the 2.4Ghz network from the Fritz.

      • you can plug in a printer, scanner, or USB harddrive to share them across the network. ie streaming video to TV for example

  • Is the N750 better than the Cisco WAG160N?

    • Linksys, not Cisco. Not to be confused, 2 very very different brands even though it says Cisco on it.

    • I believe you are comparing a router with a modem router here.

  • Thanks bought the router. I am currently using an old Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato, was looking for something with faster WIFI, I guess I will wait for the custom firmware support now, but USB ports is nice. Cheap NAS.

  • Is this online only price or both online and brick & mortar store price?

    • You can order online for pickup at this price… if they have stock!

  • "Today Deal" lol!

  • Just ordered the 5 port switch. Good value!

  • Cheers, ordered 2 of the Netgear switches.
I have one of these already (and a GS108) and they are rock solid.

  • I used one of these Netgears at work when a Cisco switch wasn't available, recall it resetting itself when the ports were maxed.

  • Hi

A question about this N750.. I bought my mum a Samsung 10" tablet thing for xmas for her to be able to use Skype to contact my brother in Japan and to just browse the web.. hoping also it will keep her mind occupied :)

So now that she has the tablet but I am still waiting for the internet to be connected to her house.they promise it in a week.

So now I need to get her hooked up to Wifi. My question is, can I get her this router and will it be a basic setup for her, she doesn't need anything flash, just a very basic Wifi for the tablet use..

    Thanks in advance :)

    Cheers

    Pookie

    • For a basic setup just use a router with ADSL model built in, like what you get from ISPs.

    • +1

Depends on what internet connection she will be getting.

If it is ADSL2 and alike, you need a modem + router setup or modem/router all-in-one setup, for things like NBN you will be fine with a router.

      • +1

        Its adsl 2+ from clubtelco.

So to clarify she needs modem/router..not just a router like the n750 of this deal?

        Thanks..

        • +1

Yep, you are right. Modem router req. unless you already have a spare modem laying around or want a AIO unit.

  • If I was to buy two of the routers would I be able to replace my current BiPAC 7800N modem router (keep the modem running) and use the two access points to extend my wifi range? I've played around a little with dd-wrt in the past but it's quite overwhelming!

  • +2

I found this guide fairly easy to follow.
Got my DIR-632 running to extend my wifi range.

Having said that, I can't find DD-WRT for this router.

According to Russ's comment above, you can install Open WRT on it.

    Edit:
That was supposed to be a reply to cartman's comment.

    • Thanks, I may give this same process a go on Open WRT anyway. I'm not sure I'm having the right expectations with an extender setup with DD-WRT - should my devices seamlessly connect to either access point or should they switch to whichever is the stronger signal? I don't know enough to know if I have the right expectations.

      • If I was to buy two of the routers would I be able to replace my current BiPAC 7800N modem router (keep the modem running) and use the two access points to extend my wifi range?

Easy way: just connect both routers together using 1x LAN port on each unit. The NAT function in the router will take care of the rest. This is ethernet bridging. (correct me if I'm wrong)

Also change the channel/s of the 2.4Ghz (&/or 5Ghz) wifi on both APs to avoid problems. Use inSSIDer to check for surrounding networks & the channels they utilise then choose one for your's that will be 'clear'. You can set the same SSID & WPA2 passwords on both APs so your devices transition smoothly between.

  • Order "confirmation" email =(

Sorry, the Netgear switch has all sold out in Ultimo branch. Please check with our other branches to see if they have any left.

  • +2

I just got the Netgear at Officeworks (RRP $69) for $13.50. They were a bit shocked at the price but didn't question it.

    • I'm guessing if the nearest store with stock is 500k's away and shipping is not an option , that OW price match is out of the question?

    • Man, you're lucky, I went into OW and they crapped on about grey imports etc. every time I go to OW for price matching I always leave pissed off. Their guarantee is useless

      • Just to counter your experience, I've price matched a keyboard/mouse set recently and they were super nice about it, just checked the price and away I went.

  • Sale is on, OP's "Starts Friday" claim is incorrect. Purchased one in-store this morning, at the deal price.

    • I believe the dates on the email were for another deal. The post has been edited.

  • what's the difference between a switch and router?

By the way how do you set the branch on the MSY website, cant see it anywhere?

  • +3

Thought this was appropriate, May interest some of you, more so for modems, NSA imposed backdoors?

"Some random code/data about the backdoor I found in my Linksys WAG200G (TCP/32764).

The backdoor may be present in other hardware, I'll update this readme accordingly :)

    Backdoor confirmed in:
    - Linksys WAG200G

    • Tnx,it's very interesting to read how far these guys are going towards to prove backdoors really exists in mainstream router/modems.

  • I managed to order one earlier today (site was shakey!) but still no pickup confirmation from the store :( hoped I'd have it by now!

The WD600 is a solid performer. The bad reviews of the Wd750 put me off buying that model.

  • Great deal. Was in need of the gigabit switch; bought one.

  • MSY Hurstville never responded to the online order I placed, so I called them… only to be told that they didn't even check email/online orders, and were now out of stock.

    • +7

      They answered the phone????????????????????
      WOW, that's a first.

      • Haha! Trust me, I was surprised too.

The sad thing is, I kinda wish they didn't now, given what they told me on the phone must've been wrong! Just got an email telling me my order is now ready for pickup…

        Oh MSY.

  • The Dlink NAS price is nice, any one has comment on this product? looks like no usb 3, and the speed only 30M/s for network copy.

  • another noob question, i have 2 LAN ports in my rented unit, one downstairs and another up.

currently my adsl2 modem/router is plugged downstairs and the reception on the 2nd floor in not optimal.

can i use the switch to plug directly to lan port upstairs or is there a better solution to improve connnection (wifi or local) on the 2nd floor?

  • can i use the switch to plug directly to lan port upstairs or is there a better solution to improve connnection (wifi or local) on the 2nd floor?

Yes, if they are on the same cable run in wall. Just connect a cable to a router upstairs & config settings. Alternatively you can go the EoP (Ethernet over powerline) route.

  • How will this router go on the NBN?

  • I still waiting for confirmation as well.
Does anyone know why Clayton has moved to ACT
    My profile has the following:
Your current pickup location is: Clayton(ACT) Branch.

  • Can anyone that purchased the Netgear switch kindly post up the barcode? Trying to save myself a 25 min drive by price matching at OW.
    Appreciate it :-)

  • Argh!
Missed out on this deal, totally my fault.

Went out and bought two of these to make me feel better.
    http://www.megabuy.com.au/hp-j9559a-procurve-1410-8-port-gig…

I think I got a great deal here also!

  • I bought the switch from OW last night for $15, still waiting for email from MSY for the router!

  • Got an email last night telling me the item is out of stock and to check back lateror buy alternative.
    Guess what? In stock today!

    Should have gone to officeworks.

  • just got 2 of the switches from OW Windsor Qld for $14.25 each. Paid with a gift card purchased from Liquor land on Amex, so cost is only $8.50.

they had another 5 on the shelf.

they went on with the usual BS about the price being too low to be true, needing to call the store to confirm stock despite the website stating "in stock", etc.

I just explained their policy required an identical item in stock, which I had proven, and they reluctantly processed the sale.

  • Ordered yesterday (after struggling with their atrocious website) as it was showing "In Stock" at Sydney branches.

Then I get an email late yesterday afternoon saying "out of stock"! :0

    So how can it be:-

    1. "out of stock" when showing In stock" at time of order?

    2. "out of stock" when the sale states "pre order now" which indicates they are waiting on the response and then will order stock from their supplier to cover orders?

When the heck are MSY going to lift their BL**DY game and deliver on their offers and ALSO replace their CR@PPY website with one that actually works and reflects stock level properly?

    NOT HAPPY JAN (MSY)!

  • Still no email for me.. I might just goto the store..

  • Picked up a router and switch yesterday (2/1) at the Mitcham store in Vic. I just walked in without an online order and grabbed the itesm. They had about 40 of each listed as in stock at the time, about noon.

  • I just got a shipping email from them.

    • Mine arrived on Monday

  • +1

Just went to OW and bought 2 for $13.50 each.

    • Which one did you go to?

I went to OW Bondi Junction with a printout showing the offer and "in stock" and the "team leader" rang MSY who said they had none then one then none so they wouldn't honour their own Price match less 5% policy!! X(

Disappointing outcome to say the least from both retailers! :(

    • Only just noticed amongst my emails (tto late now) a reponse from MSY after complaining about the cancellation of my order, that they got 2 available due to a customer cancelling their order.

      • As per my previous reply:-

Which branch of OW and MSY did you go to?

  • The GS105 is now back to $35.

  • Could i put the WD router in bridge mode? I want to connect my PVR (topfield) to my computer router.
Can i wirelessly bridge the WD?
Otherwise i've got to buy a topfield branded usb wifi dongle, and take up 1 of the usb ports on the PVR.

    • +1

No wifi bridge mode on these cheap routers (N600/N750). You can do Ethernet bridging, but may not suit your setup &/or you may not like cable laying around.

      • Took me way too long to figure this out, I assume putting OpenWRT on it won't enable this feature?
Lucky I bought 2 I guess so I have one unopened I can take back.

        • Just signed up to reply to this deal as it is pretty darn good.

You can do wireless bridging between the two if both have been flashed to OpenWrt. I just did this myself yesterday. OpenWrt isn't as intuitive as say DD-WRT, but works great and has more room for extending the router's capabilities.

        • The 2nd one is intended for my brother with his Velocity Fibre;
I needed mine to connect my media area wirelessly to my 7800N

      • Thanks, saved me a needless purchase.

  • I had office works price match and beat by 10% today.. Guess they were very nice and I was lucky :)

    Thanks OP!!

  • I picked up a router today in store — didn't end up getting a confirmation email though!

  • Where does it state specials up to 5th Jan? Today the GS105 is stating $35 on web site linked. and I want to get one this weekend.
