$39 Western Digital WD MyNet N900 Dual-Band Router 7x Gigabit Ethernet, 2x USB Ports @ MSY

350

Now on sale for $39, existing price was $79. The router features Dual-Band speeds up to 450 mbps (supporting devices) on both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. 7 gigabit Ethernet ports (plus an 8th one for uplink to internet router) and 2 USB ports. 3 Year limited warranty.

MSY, while on their website it states that it starts tomorrow. You can purchase it today. My local Malvern store had 40+ in stock.

TIP: As @Flyingz mentioned, this is a "standalone WiFi router", ideal for being added to an existing Cable modem or ADSL modem with older/existing Wifi that you want to upgrade. Also, it can be easily set to just run as an Access Point with the benefit of the 7 gigabit ports.

  • price in title please

    • Done and done.

    • $39 is ok for 8 ports and gbe but i suppose non AC stuff is old hat now

  • +4

FYI for those who don't know, this router need a modem to connect the internet first then you must use another cable connect to this router.

  • Wish it had VoIP ports.

  • I recently bought a $19 WD dual band router and was surprised it matched the range of my ~$140 Netgear DGN4000 dual band modem/router.

    • I bought one of those (N600). Happy with mine. Ended up buying another.

  • Ordered. Thanks OP

    Not supported by DD-WRT.

    • +4

It's not that I don't like DD-WRT, it's just that I'm sick of routers being defined by whether they support it or not.

      • +1

Though DD-WRT or OpenWRT support is an indication of more community support and more chance of help with problems.

      • It's one of the most important factors in my purchasing decision so I'm glad someone mentioned it. Mainly because I find the DNSMasq feature very handy and also might want to use it as a wireless client or bridge down the track. I'm not sure the 6th comment on a page qualifies as "defined by" either.

  • Awesome basic, fast router.

  • +4

    For the geeks:
It has a custom 5-(virtual?)core 600MHz CPU by a company that's been bought out and shut down. While it's probably running Linux under the hood there's no OpenWRT support, nor is any likely to appear, due to a lack of support from the now-defunct vendor.

There's no WiFi network bridging available, at least that I can see in the manual.

I'm going to upvote anyway, just because DiGiTaL MoNkEY's done the work on the description: searched for dupes, added reviews, price comparisons etc. Solid work, DM.

  • Specs look good, but how good is WD as a brand when it comes to networking products… I've always associated them with hard drives.

    • Design and manufacturing probably outsourced anyway.

  • +1
    • Thanks. Was looking at this mainly for a print server and GBe as a bonus. Not sure now if its worth getting after reading the review?

  • I'll give it a go, for $39. My Billion is slowly dying anyway.
At the very least I'll be able to ditch the 5 port switch currently hanging off my current router.

    • I'm happy that I switch from Billion to FritzBox!

      • I second FritzBox. Fax-over-IP alone is worth the price, if you don't have a landline. Plus the integrated cordless base for if you do still have a landline, the built-in wifi phone features. There is no going back.

        • Oh, there most certainly is going back with the Fritzbox.

FritzBox are ok as a cheap unit, but don't hold a bar to an properly speced billion, especially against billions VOIP capabilities. The billion is more robust, almost instantaneous at switching through calls where as the fritz suffers from massive ring delays and phantom calls, billion is highly configurable which is required for certain voip provides and well beyond the fritz "dumb" voip configuration. Billion's also don't suffer from any of the PSTN incompatibilities that Fritz never bothered to address with either ADSL1 or ADSL2. i.e. officially you cannot use fritz units with pstn based faxes, alarm systems or any Telstra approved parallel services or even certain telstra paid services.
They are pretty though.. nice and red.

  • Purchased one with a TP-LINK WD4800 ($45)

Can finally max out NBN over Wireless, so for a total of $84 with the network card, well worth it,

  • I don't understand why these things are more prevalent than units with integrated ADSL modems. Sure, some people may need to expand their current network, but most households needs a modem and router in one unit. And a decked out dual band gigabit modem router is far less available than this stuff.

  • I pick mine up today and will report back.

  • AWESOME! Just wish I had found it BEFORE I purchased the 3Tb WD Mybook Live! As this thing is just as good. Maybe no internet access but that is about it.

Slightly better range then my bigpond CG3100. Shame PC doesn't have a 5Ghz card. Surface connects at 5 fine.

  • PS. Mine has a USB 3.0 and a USB 2.0 port. Unexpected.
