Looks like the bargain of the year when you see this..

  • This amazon review sealed it for me

" does sometimes stops giving internet connection but every router other does the same thing "

Uh, no. If it is scheduled to reboot every week at 3am on tuesday, that's fine. But I expect perfect uptime otherwise.

    • Thanks. Added it to the description

  • So I'm guessing this is a bargain for the money? How does it compare to other devices?

    • Jury is still out for me on this router though not looking good. I got it last time it was on special. Since adding it in to my home network, the wifi has been a bit hit and miss (my old TP Link was 100% stable)
I noticed that doing alot of uploads could kill it.
My wife was even like "what the hecks is going on with the internet it's been dropping out heaps lately" That's while her laptop was connected to the WD wifi.

So at the moment (to get her going again!), I have my wireless access via TP Link, and desktops connected via the WD My net 900 (gigabit ethernet is nice)

So, if I had my chance again I probably wouldn't buy it…

I've tried disabling all the fancier features (eg QoS), will see if that helps but haven't got around to testing it's wifi again.

  • Has anyone successfully ordered online and got delivery? Their website needs a serious facelift.

I bought the N750 last time which I assume would be similar in functionality. WiFi signal isn't nearly as strong as my old Netgear router, but oddly it seems more reliable. Quality vs Quantity.

USB file sharing over Gigabit Ethernet is very fast and reliable, achieving the same speed as if the hard disk were connected directly to the PC via USB. Only trouble with the USB file sharing is the router adds a weird number to the beginning of each file share, so if you have custom names they are a little messed up. Otherwise, it works very well and I'm very happy with it.

I was able to successfully connect multiple flash drives to one of the two USB ports using a hub, but it didn't work so well trying to connect multiple USB hard drives (it still worked but some of the partitions became read-only or showed up as being empty). I did use powered hard drives, not portable. I used a portable non-powered hard disk with the router and shared successfully, but haven't tried using two at the same time. It seems to keep hard disks powered up all the time so they won't spin down.

USB printer sharing works a bit but it sux. It's not a true print server, only a USB/Network bridge. The software is not very reliable, and needs to use custom software on each computer that loads a memory-resident app which must be open all the time. It puts a big icon the OS X dock, or an icon in the Windows task bar. The software complains that it can't find any printers each time you wake up the computer from sleep. I often have to log out of windows then log back in before it will recognise the router, otherwise it tells me no network device was found. I was able to successfully use a printer/scanner to scan a document via the USB server ONCE, but it never worked again after that.

Important for some people: the USB print server ONLY works over WiFi if connected directly to the WD router's WiFi. If you connect via WiFi to a different WiFi access point in the house (despite it being on the same network) the WD software will NOT work for printing. I bought the router to share a USB printer in the office upstairs, but the downstairs computer connects to a different router, and won't work. File sharing works fine, but for some reason the printer sharing protocols are not shared across the other WiFi router. I could spend hours doing some highly technical diagnostics with a network sniffer to work out which protocol isn't being forwarded but considering USB print sharing via this router is flakey anyway, it would be better to just buy a $30/$40 dedicated print server box, or just buy a new Network printer.

I'm considering buying another one of these just to use as a file server. If you just want to share a couple of hard drives, it's a heck of a lot cheaper than an HP Microserver, and probably uses less power!

    • Thanks was going to get this to use with a printer over wifi.

      • I'd avoid this router if your primary use is as a printer server. It's not very good, especially considering dedicated printer servers can be purchased for similar or even cheaper prices.

I haven't read any reviews so don't buy it without doing some homework first to see if it works OK, but MSY sell this one for $36:

    • How fast do you get for transferring files to and from usb attached HDD?
