    "Why we are free!
This initiative is alive only thanks to your tips."

Honestly, I would rather just a pricetag than the uncomfortable feeling at the end where I have to judge how much you are worth. Can't speak on behalf of others though.

    ^ exactly..
And how is this a bargain? It's always "free", with the expectation of tipping.

Another Learner is going to get fried by Ozbargainers :(

We rely entirely on tips offered to us by those who have enjoeyd the day. Oh my… I hope their story telling is better than their spelling.

If you claim it's free, then expect tips - sorry, but no bargain.

the op is a learner, why not suggest they update the post to include the tip bit rather than neg

You don't have to tip. If its gonna make you feel awkward, don't do it. Either don't tip or don't tour. They don't say they expect tips, they say they continue to exist cos of people's tips.

I'm the same, we actually didn't go on your tour after I read your website. I hate the awkward feeling at the end, having grown up in a country with no tipping, it doesn't feel natural.
If it had a price tag, there is a good chance we'd have come along.

I've always found that tip based tours are heaps better than cost ones. The guides really work hard.

  • Can't speak for this tour but I've been on a few "free" tours in Europe.

I've thoroughly enjoyed them, I'm generally not a fan of tour groups but I enjoy the ad-hoc and casual nature of these.

I find these "free" tours a great way to get your head around a city before you tackle it on your own, they are also a great way to get some local knowledge.

Whilst I wouldn't call this a bargain… tipping is clearly optional… if you "enjoeyd" your tour feel free to tip, otherwise thank them and be on your way.

No need to feel obliged or awkward… :)

Overall it's still much cheaper than an organised tour.

Free Tours are actually a worldwide movement for travellers with a limited budget. At the end of the tour you are free to decide how much you want to tip. If you travel you will know it is much better concept than paying $30-$50 upfront for a tour and realising that you stuck with a boring tour guide. With us you free to leave if don't like it.

    • With the paid tours you are free to leave as well. So that is not a point of difference.

      • +1

But in this case, you haven't already paid upfront.

    • I live here in Sydney,so never thought will need this tour, even for free. But this same concept helped me a lot in all the countries I visited. it is indeed a worldwide movement. Saved $100s in other countries. Basicly they do the same tour that others do for $50-60.

  • Dupe..

so this deal gets negged, but this deal for same got 60+ votes.
    Go figure…

      Negs Be gone,

      All Positive now !

  • +2

Why the negs? You rather not have the free option?

At the end of day, the tour guides still need to eat, drink and a place to sleep. They can actually spend time getting real money instead of bringing people for tour. So if you enjoyed your day with them and you can afford, why not tip a bit?

    • So if you enjoyed your day with them and you can afford, why not tip a bit?

They are not paying tax on this income, therefore they should not receive a cent.

  • OP, the tour looks interesting. What is a suggested amount to tip if someone has enjoyed it?

  • -3

Rep, will you issue a tax invoice?

  • Haven't done this one, but the other free walking tours I have done around the world are amazing!!!

  • Very interesting business model behind the "free" tours:
    http://travel.stackexchange.com/questions/6325/what-is-the-b…

There are a number of different types of these "Free" walking tours, with the business models varying dramatically. In some countries you can expect to end up at the guides "cousins" carpet shop, where the guide will take a kick-back for any sales. Some tours are run by the local community and/or volunteers and truly are free (although with the potential for small tips which will often go to the organization rather than the guide).

And then there's organizations like Sandemans.

Sandeman's hit the press a few years ago when German TV station ZDF did an expose on how they operate. Google will give you all of the allegations and counter-claims (search for sandeman zdf), but in short Sandeman's were claimed to be charging their "freelance" tour guides ~3 Euro for every person who was on the tour. The tour guides would then push the guests for "tips", often including repeated comparisons to similar "commercial" tours, and the prices that the guests would be paying if they had taken one of those tours rather than their "free" tour.

If a guest tips 10 Euro, the guide would have made 7 Euro out of them. If another guest tips nothing, then the guide would be out of pocket 3 Euro. Either way the company has made 3 Euro per guest.

I have upvoted the deal and OP's comment.
    That's my tipping done !!
