Add it to Paypal and reap the benefits !

So only use it where there is no surcharge. This is a great card for racking up free points for paying bills online using paypal. Zero annual fee, you cant go wrong if you use it correctly.

      • +2

        So why the negative vote?

    • lol so ask them if they surcharge before you use it.

    • There's an obligation for the salesperson to advice you of any surcharge before conducting the transaction. Otherwise it is illegal.

      • Obligation and illegal? If it was illegal it would be a requirement. An obligation implies it's an ethical issue.

I'm finding more and more places accepting Amex cards. Latest major example is as stated above - PayPal. To avoid any surcharges, use your brain and ask if there is one prior to purchasing. Plus I'm pretty sure that American Express won't try to sell you a million other products and services because the only thing they do is the one credit card (as opposed to the banks and other financial institutions). Having said all of this, the conversion rates of this American Express Amex card ($x:z qantas points) is somewhat convoluted (too many conditions) compared to say my bank.. At CBA, it doesn't matter where I spend my money as the conversion rate is still $1=1 qantas point. I'm on a Diamond CBA card, I might add, which cannot really be compared with this entry level American Express Amex card. My advice to anyone wanting to spend big on an Amex card: attain the most prestigious one on the menu, because the high annual fee will be offset by the increased conversion ratio.

cba just cut the reward conversion rates on all their cards making them pretty much the worst conversion across the board. much better options out there.

      • -1

CBA's Diamond Amex card retains a $1:1 Qantas point ratio. As I mentioned above, there are advantages of attaining the highest tier Amex card. In relation to your 'much better options out there' comment, please provide more details otherwise your comment is worthless. Also don't overlook CBA's Great Rate offers, which provide 0.99% interest for 3 months on purchases over $1000. The Great Rate can be used 4 times per year I believe, as you cannot use more than 1 offer at once.

        • I don't get this. I don't have QFF card.

IF you link a QFF to your CBA Diamond credit card (AMEX), does that remove the CBA award and convert it to QFF, or do you get both reward programs?

I looked at conversion rates and the CBA reward program is 50% better than Qantas program based on Gift cards.

If this is the case, why wouldn't you pay with your credit card then hand them your FF card so you get points for both?

        • yes, link a QFF to your CBA Diamond credit card (AMEX), and companion MasterCard, removes the CBA awards and you get QFF instead.

        • here you go. from Aust Business Traveller.

The Commonwealth Bank is set to slash the rate at which the bank’s American Express, MasterCard and Visa credit card holders earn Qantas and Virgin Australia frequent flyer points.

The as-yet-unannounced changes to the per-dollar earning for CBA’s family of Commonwealth Awards cards – flagged in the fine print at the bottom of this web page – will take effect from October 1st.

In particular the cuts will see Commonwealth Bank cardholders hit with Australia’s worst earning rates for Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

Additionally, from November 20 the bank will no longer allow points to be transferred to Air New Zealand’s Airpoints program, which closes the door to flight redemptions across the breadth of the Star Alliance.

Taken as read, CBA’s Awards cards will offer Australia’s worst earning rates for Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

Whist not change to Diamond, you have to work our for yourself if the $425 annual fee is worth the capped earning on these cards.

With a referral from a current cardholder you can get 8000 bonus points for the same card as follows:
    - 2,500 points the first time a purchase on the Card is made in Australia on selected Qantas products and services.
    - 5,500 points when $500 is spent on purchases within the first two months of Cardmembership.

Below is a summary of bonus points (and fees) for other cards if referred by a current cardholder.

Platinum Charge Card 60,000 points (Annual fee $900)
Platinum Reserve Card 40,000 points (Annual fee $395)
Platinum Edge Card 15,000 points (Annual fee $195)
Gold Charge Card 30,000 points (Annual fee $130 + $80 MR Ascent opt-in fee)
David Jones Amex 20,000 points (Annual fee $99)

These are for new AMEX applications only so you can't hold any existing AMEX cards. Please PM me if you need a referral.

    • Please Sir, can I please have a referral? I can't pm from my phone

      • Activate your private messaging.

    • For david jones, you earn 3MP points per dollar with groceries and petrol (coles and woolies). Conversion rate is 0.75QF per 1MMP, so 2.25QF per dollar.
At david jones, you get 2MP per dollar, and they usually do triple or double points.

Do other cards give bonuses, like if you spend on groceries/petrol?

      • No, AMEX is the only one that has different tiers for petrol/groceries.

    • Whoa! Didn't know this! The value of the points i get from online referrals is greater than the dollar amount i get if i sign people up instore. Plus, its taxed.

I know my dominant strategy now, so pm me too :P

  • So realistically what is 1 point worth?

    • $0.01

      • Will get back on this one..

    • 1/20,000th of a movie ticket.
